Twice, I've made the mistake of taking my dog here and twice, my dog has not been given any kind of actual treatment for her ails. Each time, my dog has been taken in the back for examination, yet the vets can't seem to answer the most basic questions. Their only concern is the dollar amount to charge for what I view as nothing less than theft of service. I should be permitted to accompany my dog and to speak directly to the vet while my dog is being examined, and to make sure the shots I've been paying for are being administered. I would not put it past these people to withhold my dogs antibiotic shot, charge for it, and hope that her condition worsens so it becomes imperative that she receives surgery, which in my opinion, can be avoided if the vet considers the patient and customer first and foremost, and not the challenges of making it worth their while to attend to my dog in a compassionate manner, or at all for that matter. The estimate was $2,000.00. The initial exam cost $450.00!!! This unbeleivable amount was not conveyed to me prior to the exam, only after, and due to their new client forms forceful, contractual terms, you must agree to the unknown in advance and without any prior knowledge of the ensuing hustle and shakedown. I've met Street hustlers and drug dealers that have more integrity, and at the end of the day, that's all these people are. Only with the addition of a degree. They also made me pay for an additional rabies shot that my dog did not need as her spay was last December 2021. On top of an urgent visit charge, my first visit cost over $600.00, yet, my beautiful dog has not been given anything to help her situation that I can attest to, and my dogs health is indicative of not being treated at all. The $450.00 exam fee is a joke and these people should be ashamed of themselves, but they're not. The day of my dogs first visit, I also had a medical exam at a medical doctors practice that required that I give blood, etc. My total exam cost $160.00. My test also checked for cancer, but apparently, $450.00 for a 17lb canine does not afford blood work that checks for cancer. On both occasions, I've asked them to check her lungs because she's got some kind of cough or an allergy or something. Of course, after their supposed exam in private, they have no idea what I'm talking about, but foolishly attempt to lie about it and pretend that they've exercised their due diligence, so everything is meant to be presumed fine. Like I said previously,, I've met street hustlers and drug dealers in the past that had more class and wasn't impressed by them either. They're all the same. At least in the past, my interactions left me with something to show for it. I regret ever spending one dime with these crooked people, and more importantly, I'm disappointed in myself for jeopardizing my dogs health by taking her to this junkyard vet, TWICE!. I would be extremely cautious when dealing with these people, if for any reason you have no choice otherwise. My dog is a huge part of my life, and these people have underestimated that aspect of it BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY DO NOT CARE. And unfortunately, that will never change because this is what they were taught at the University. To separate themselves from the rest of us psychologically and suppress all emotions that are invoked by human decency and compassion. AKA, learning to be soulless and evil while motivated by ego and money. The leverage used for monetary gain at another's expense is the name of the game and not a single consideration for the greater good. All I can say to that is, I wouldn't step foot in this place again if I had to shit a macho burrito, which is coincidentally the equivalent to the rating I give for this horrible place and the experience they've provided that nobody should have to endure as a paying customer. Enjoy the macho burrito scumbags! You've earned it! Read Less

Your sweet dog has an infection in the middle of a large necrotic mass. We worked her in, on emergency, as soon as possible between appointments which is why she was not taken to an examination room and instead examined immediately as we prioritized her and we pushed other patients already in examination rooms aside for her. With direct communication, the veterinarian informed you of her mass and it’s necrotic center, which was not a simple abscess, as you believed. An estimate was provided, upon your request, for mass removal and x-rays for her reported cough. This was provided by the technician both verbally and via email because she was dropped off and you were not present. With your approval, presurgical bloodwork was performed as a starting point and she was administered a long acting antibiotic to help stabilize her infection. Afterward, she was discharged with no further treatment. None of this was performed without communication and your approval. Her mass is simply not treatable medically and requires resection as it has outgrown its blood supply. We have made the best recommendation we can to treat her condition. The total treatment plan for the examination, bloodwork, antibiotic, heartworm testing and preventative, x-rays, mass removal and histopathology was $2,300. You opted not to proceed past examination, bloodwork and an antibiotic. Your additional visit was for a medication for pain. Again, this will not eliminate her mass, or determine the cause of her cough, which remain. Neither of these totaled near $2,300. We understand everyone has a budget and respect that we make decisions collaboratively with each and every client. Name calling and anger does not change the fact that there is no medical resolution for her mass and only stopgap measures have been chosen thus far. It is not malpractice to tell the truth, despite it not being the news one wishes for.

I just called to see if my Blue Quaker could be seen in an emergency situation. He has been seen by the vets at this office so I wanted to see if he could be helped. My 9 month old puppy got to my bird and pulled all his tail feathers out. He is obviously distressed and I am concerned for his wellbeing over the weekend. Tell me why I asked the receptionist if any of the doctors would be able to see him since there are Very limited vets in SA that see or are able to assist with birds. She said no, sorry, you have to wait til Monday. She didn’t even try to find out of one of the vets could help. I work in healthcare and if this was one of my patients they would have never been treated this way. I train my staff to demonstrate empathy and compassion for the people we help. Dr. Byrd has been taking care of my two chihuahuas since they were 8 weeks old. They are now nearly 9 years old. Like most dog parents, there's nothing I wouldn't do for these two little girls. Last week, Roxie (who will eat anything that doesn't eat her) wouldn't eat. She didn't eat for a day and a half and was just acting different. I called on Saturday and within a couple of hours, Dr. Byrd had seen my baby and relieved all my fears. By the next night, Roxie was pretty much normal. Dr. PHILLIPS sent me home with 100$ worth of meds and I have them to my iguanna as instructed. 3 days later my iguanna got really sick and out of it looking, and he was dragging his back legs...i called the Dr. And spoke with him directly on the phone, he told me to look it up in the internet?? Who says that?? Needless to say I stopped feeding him the meds immediately and I tried to hand feed and water my poor guy, but I didn't do enough, my poor guy died 2 days later I found him upsidedown in his cages floor. Maybe you taken your pets to other Veterinarians and you've been told their diagnosis is something but you know, that's just not right. You trust them but you know your pet. You're concerned with what you see. That's me. He's 9 years old. I've spent so much money treating symptoms or possibly what they think it is because they've seen this in other pets. Dr. Byrd is right on with what's wrong. Test and xrays have confirmed anything she suspects that's going on. Completely different from what I've been told. She doesn't miss a thing. My only regret is that I didn't find her 9 years ago. I've received many follow up calls from Dr. Byrd, and the staff concerned with him and his health. I've never seen Dr. Phillips. He's called me several times to check on him also. Every concern was addressed with accurate answers. I would see him if Dr Byrd wasn't available. If you're like me and love your pets so much that you want the very best, you need to schedule your appointment. You will love them. I cried because I have answers and he's in the best care possible. First of all like to really say that I appreciate the doctor calling and giving me an update on my puppies exam and the results that came from the exam. What I don't appreciate is someone giving me a call multiple times and asking me if I would like to get a vaccine that was due 30 days later. After a long day at work I arrived they had me the invoice and it shows charges at procedures that were not authorized when I drop them off in the morning. Which I contested and asked to be removed and was told that only the manager could remove those charges. I wasn't going to let that slide so after being a little persistent and spending way more time here than I expected I got those charges credited I didn't have to pay anything extra. This isn't the first time that I encounter such high pressure sales tactics like these at this place. Overall it was an OK experience and I would recommend this place if you are willing to open up your wallet and your time 4 people who want to sell you everything including the kitchen sink. Read Less

Please if anyone is reviewing comments. I worked 62 hours this week in the healthcare field and I don't care who reads this and knows who I am. I fought through traffic to pick up my Tortoise Leo 2 in order to make it before they closed. I arrived at 7:02 pm and pulled in front of 2 vehicles exiting the parking lot. The 2 leaving were staff members after I called to tell them please give me an extra few minutes to pick up my 8 year old sons animal that is very sick and need warmth. The Vet told me he could keep him but not offer a warm environment. I told him I was on my way as fast as I could get there. I was in the parking lot at 7:02 pm to get him and the 2 employees or possibly the Vet left. I cannot believe that these people care so little for the animals that they would not let me get him. If he gets worse or they have just abandoned my animal the will be liable for all actions. So if your screening this my pet better be ok tomorrow or this clinic will be held responsible for neglect of a help creature that is very much loved and cared for by my 8 year old son. See you at 8:00 tomorrow!Read Less

All I can say is "wow." The entire staff, from the ladies who checked us in to the veterinary assistant to the vet herself were all amazing. From the moment we walked in, the environment was professional, clean, friendly and courteous. Our cat had a regular vet, but suffered an injury that required an appointment the next day. Our regular vet was unable to see him, and I am honestly glad, because that led us to Northern Oaks, and Dr. Byrd. She and her staff were very knowledgeable and gentle, and they really took the time to listen to all of our concerns, answer all of our questions, and most importantly, examine and patch up our poor cat. Dr. Byrd was upfront but not at all pushy about cost, something that I certainly appreciated, as I've never had an injured pet before, and I had no idea what the cost for such treatment might be. The entire visit was as easy and pleasant as a vet visit with an injured animal can be. We will definitely be back. Read Less

All of the assistants and receptionists are so happy to see him. Whenever i have a concern or question, all three of the doctors are quick to reassure me in whatever the situation may be. Most of the time it turns out to just be me being a paranoid pet owner, which brings me a lot of relief! This staff makes the health and well being of their patients priority and will always find time to meet their needs, whether its a nail trim or an emergency! They have a life-long client with me, thanks to their compassion and knowledge. The clinic was recently remodeled and looks top notch! Not to mention it is the only animal hospital i have been to that doesnt smell like animals! Whenever i am there, all staff is working diligently to ensure that there are no accidents or messes left of any kind. I had to make the emotional decision to euthanize a dog we've had for the past 13 years. To make this decision more difficult, we have been searching for a new vet for a month or two as we had several poor experiences with our previous clinic and decided to leave that clinic.  On Friday, June 28th, we called Northern Oaks AH and explained that we had made the decision to put one of our dogs down and wanted to see what services they had to offer.  We were quoted $45 if they disposed of the ashes on their private lake or $115 if we wanted the ashes returned in an urn. We wanted the ashed returned as we had planned to scatter them on our property located in the country where the dog spent a lot of her life.  We confirmed the charges and made the appointment to bring her in at 10am June 29th (today). We also felt it would be a good time to see how they operated as we have 4 other dogs that will be making trips to the vet during the year.I showed up with the dog promptly at the scheduled appointment time.  After filling out a registration sheet, they took us back to a room.  There was still more paperwork to complete so I went back to the front desk to wrap things up.  At that point the receptionist asked what type of urn and I would like and finished the paperwork.  She then gave me a summary of the charges which were nowhere near what we were told on the phone.  The $115 for the urn was correct but there was also a $40 office visit fee as well as a $75 charge for the actual euthanasia.  The final quote was $238! DOUBLE what we were quoted (and confirmed) over the phone.  I questioned the charges and the only thing I was told was "sorry for the mistake".  I called my wife just be sure i wasn't missing anything and she confirmed the original costs as well.  I told the receptionist it was way more than we were told and that we would not using their services.  I asked for my dog and left. No attempt to try and retain the business at all.  Just another "sorry" as we were halfway out the door. Needless to say, we will not be using them for any of our pets.  I'm sure they are wonderful with their current clients and I can understand a pricing mistake but when you confirm the pricing and repeat it back to them and they again say that is the cost, it gives you enough assurance to take the next step and schedule the appointment.  If you are on the fence about using them, I would suggest getting a quote in person and in writing.  I would also suggest that NOAH somehow put a note regarding the quote they gave next to the client's name who will be coming in.  Back to the drawing board. This review is based off one bad experience at this hospital so I would urge anyone to go and try out the place - it is highly likely you will have a better experience than I did.  However, my experience was not great, so I thought I should review. In short, I went to Northern Oaks with my dog and, first, my wait time was long; and then second, it was abundantly clear that the vet was afraid of my 42 lb Staffy.  This scared vibe obviously oozed through to my dog (and we all know that dogs are emotion sponges) causing my dog to pee herself the first time ever in a vet's office!  I admit I come from DC where every other dog (even among us yuppies) is a bully breed, but dang, this was insane.  The doc kept talking about pit-type dogs and how much of a bad rap they have had but then proceeded to visually act terrified every time she had to work on my dog (who did nothing but lick her and be scared). Listen, lady, I am sorry my dog is not a suburbia-approved Lab or Golden Retriever but please just say no bully breeds if you are going to come in an obviously petrified state to work on them.   Oh yeah, not once in her entire life has a vet had to muzzle my dog and this vet immediately came in and insisted on muzzling my dog for no reason whatsoever!  Awesome...Let's just say that I have switched to a vet's office that doesn't treat breeds differently based on nothing more than appearance and whose vets come in with a calm demeanor regardless of the situation.  On a positive note, the offices  are very nice, well equipped, and modern.  Again, if you have a labradoodle or pug or some other type of "acceptable" dog, this is probably a great place for you.  If you have anything that has ever shown up in a movie as a "bad dog", I suggest you look elsewhere. My family has been going there for 20+ years ever since we got our first family pet. about 20 years ago. My best friend and their family goes there for a fair amount of time. I just got done spending over $560.00 on an exam routine shots and one xray that took less than an hour. I have been to the EMERGENCY clinic for basically the same but more intense exam and paid only $380.00 and change. Plus I spent another $400.00 a few months ago for another one of my kids. Now the kid I just spent almost $600 needs more test and work. I told them that I was just recently let go from my job and my wife had neck surgery yesterday. she will be out of work for about 8 weeks. I have two checks coming from my old job, my has atleast one huge paycheck coming next friday, lpus her disability should kick in soon, plus she has PTO she can use. Plus my unemployment willl kick in on the 15th of this month. The DR!!! told me that she and the radiologist were ""really concerned"" for Willie. So I proceeded to tell her the position I was in and could use a little help. Mind you I just spent more than $560.00 in the last couple of days. She told me that they couldn't help me. That I should go apply for a credit care card. I told her that I have and used it. The DR!!!! then told me my cat could die if not treated. I then explained to her I would have all the money up front. I needed help for my baby boy. she told me that the reason they won't help me was because of ""people"" that have burned them before. I thought that this was an ANIMAL HOSPITAL, I thought that these people cared for ANIMALS like i do, but apparently I thought wrong. This issue has nothing to do with a human it has everything to do with a defenseless animal, that is MY CHILD. My wife and I can't have kids so these are our babies, and they know this ive told them this probably every time i go. I know if i need serious medical treatment I can go to the hospital and get help whether I have money insurance or whatever. That is where the conversation. I have new a new dentist just for a reason similar to this, but in reverse order. I had dentist I liked he wasn't sure he could do the job complete without sending me to a specialist. So i decided to look for a regular dentist that was coffident enough so I didnt have to pay for a specialist. But I didn't have all the money but really needed the work. (root canal). I was refered by someone I barley knew but they were very convincing so I called the doc and explained the situation he told me come now, money can wait. Same dentist also built my wife a whole new set of the MOST BEAUTIFUL teeth I have ever seen KNowing we did not have $10,000.00 to do that. but fought the insurane to pay most of it usually the patient is in charge of that. then our part we pay aas we go, and are never denided service of any kind Read Less

We have entrusted this vet with the care of our animals for 16 years. The owner, Dr. Bekah Byrd, has a knack for hiring competent, caring staff and associate vets. I feel comfortable with everyone there. The business uses EMRs for our pets so we can have access to their records at any time.  Emails get sent to remind us of routine procedures.  The staff always calls within a few days of an appointment or procedure to be sure our pet is doing OK, and if that isn't the case, we get a call back from a vet or tech within a day telling us what to do.We are a multi-pet household, so we get pretty much everything done there: medical care, grooming, and boarding.  The facility is AAHA accredited, so I'm confident they use the most modern procedures and keep up to date on medical changes. The vets also go to continuing ed classes each year. The best way to show how wonderful they are is to tell you the story of how a few months ago, we had to put one of our beloved dogs to sleep. Everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE working at the clinic that day came to say goodbye to her. They cried with us and made sure her final moments were filled with love and dignity.  Afterward we received a card signed by the whole staff and an ornament with her paw print on it as a remembrance. When we've been back in since with other pets, they've asked us how we are doing. They are truly compassionate people. Read Less

As soon as I met Dr. Rebekah Byrd I new my dog was in extremely capable hands. She was professorial, personable and very knowledgeable. I feel my pet has received the best care an owner could ask for!! Dr. Byrd was time efficient while also taking the time to answer all my questions (I did not know there were DVM that still did that-- but she does!) so when you leave you feel very comfortable in understanding the diagnoses you were given and all your questions answered. As far a pricing I personally feel the prices are more than completive and exceedingly fair considering the time the vet spends with your pet. In Addition as for keeping in touch, she and the staff do a great job if she says she will call with the test results she will call, great follow through.(not something you always get but here you do.) In the past I've been taking my dogs to a another well know vet clinic. Although the DVM was capable he/she could never match the caring and compassion Dr. Byrd has for your pet. She truly wants what is best for your pet and you. The other vet I used to goto I felt the "" clock was ticking and the DVM was pushing me out the door to get as many patients through as possible, and part of there job was to sell me everything in store. I personally feel Northern Oaks has it right my pets health first and then advise me (not sell) any products she may need. Because of this particular way of doing business I wiil be purchasing as many of my products from them as i can. I also want to recognize the staff. They are always friendly, efficient, and take pride in their work. In the short time I've been coming to this clinic they already know my name, my pet name and her conditions. I call that superior customer service coming from a great staff. To sum up I hold Dr. Byrd in the highest regard and fell lucky for her to be my pets life- time vet. Sincerely, A dog Lover. Read Less

After reading a few of the reviews I felt I was obligated to voice my own opinion on this clinic. I have been in there many times with my dogs and cat. The front staff is always very sweet and friendly. The techs were very caring and gentle with my pets, I've never felt they were unqualified. The prices are the usual for any vet clinic in town; unless your talking about the low cost clinics or shelter programs. I did my own price shopping before choosing this clinic. I have also noticed that they always seem to have kittens in there for adoption. One time I asked where they were coming from and the receptionists said they get them all the time, either dumped on their door step or clients find them. They take them in when they have room and care for them until they can adopt them out. They even fix them and give them shots before they go home with their new family! The receptionist even told me they have adopted out a few dogs that were abandoned there too; she did say that adopting dogs out was not the norm, but they try to help out when they can. I think that is amazing of them, because as a pet owner, I know how expensive the neutering and shots can be. The doctors are all fabulous and very knowledgable. They have a new vet, a male, Dr. Philips; he is so nice and informative! The other two are females and very nice too. I haven't seen Dr. Vargo yet, but I've seen her with other people and she seems very caring and excited about her job. Dr. Byrd has been there since I started coming and she is great. I love my visits to this clinic, it's always a good experience. Read Less

I am from Oklahoma and it was my first visit to their hospital. My dog, Yuki, was at ease with them and her problems are very rapidly becoming "past" tense. For the services and examinations they performed on Yuki I definitely feel their fees were very fair. I will definitely return when I am in San Antonio and if needed. I have had nothing but incredible service at Northern Oaks. My cat became very ill a few years ago and I was having to go in almost every other day to see the doctors there. They treated me, my cat and the situation with so much attention, love and concern that you would have thought it was their cat! After having to take my cat to an emergency vet office for emergency surgery, the doctors at Northern Oaks still kept in constant contact with me. Dr. McGlothlin even asked that I call her to let her know his status every so often (keep in mind this was during Christmas break). I just could not believe how caring they were. My cat has since recovered and I would never dream of taking him anywhere else. Also, my sister had to put her dog to sleep at Northern Oaks. She was so distraught and in pain over this. Dr. Byrd comforted her and let her stay in a room with the dog for as long as she needed. She and the staff made what could have been a very painful experience a little better for her. I could go on and on about the vets there. Bottom line: this is an amazing place. Only thing I would change would be making the hours a little longer during the week and on weekends. other than that, NO complaints. I love them! They saved my baby's (cat's) life! I have a second cat now that sees Dr. Milios and she could not be nicer or more helpful! You cannot go wrong at Northern Oaks. Your pet is in good hands. Read Less

Read Less
Response from Northern Oaks Bird and Animal Hospital

The service was pretty good but I stopped going there after my cat had an infestation of tape worms. I took the live worms to the clinic in ajar to show them and ask for medicine. I was told I could not have any medication until a lab test was done. They made me pay for a lab test and then the lab test reported no parasites. found. I complained and brought them a piece stool with the worms crawling all over it and then they allowed me to purchase the tape worm drug. I was pretty pissed off when they made me waste money for a bogus lab test with bad results. Read Less

I have been going to Dr. Byrd for over 18 years. I have been through many illnesses with my pets. I have many because I once did animal rescue. I have never been displeased with the service or treatment. As you can imagine I have had many euthanized here for many different illnesses. My guys are all seniors now, so it goes without saying, many are reaching end of life now. Becca Byrd makes the process so much easier. She is empathetic, compassionate and loving always. I could not do it without her. I adore the staff and I question the source of any negative comments. I am a happy parent of many cats and dogs and I have experienced many vets during my 30 years of animal rescue. Northern Oaks Bird & Animal Hospital are number 1, above all else.

Read Less

I have been bringing my dog to Northern Oaks for about two years now. I am very pleased with the amount of care he recieves when i bring him in. These are just a few of the many things that set this place apart from all of the rest.

The doctors and staff were very empathetic and helped us through the process and even let us stay in the room during the final moments and then afterwards as long as we wanted. They also offer cremation. There's hardly ever a wait & they also do boarding if you ever need it. Highly recommend! Read Less

Dr. Vargas at my service. I found her (and her assistant) to be very thorough and friendly. I consider they went beyound their duties, and I'm happy about that. Also, the facility is clean and odor free and easy access. Yuki and I offer our thanks. :-)George Binkley - Oklahoma City, OK Read Less

I've taken my Golden Retriever to Northern Oaks for almost 3 years. I've had experience with 2 of the 3 vets and have not found more caring doctors for her. They are excellent -- I know my dog is in the best care possible. They are attentive and kind and also have a great sense of humor. My dog loves everyone that works there which is no small feat since she isn't too thrilled about being in a vets office to begin with. The staff is fantastic; friendly, courteous and professional. They treat you like family from the time you walk in the door until the Doctor says goodbye. I strongly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good veterinarian.Read Less

Read Less
