We've been with critter fixer for years, but we've noticed a big change in the last year or so and we had a decent visit before with one bad thing where they gave us a medicine we honestly didn't need (and cost WAY too much especially for not needing it), but today was just... well, the breaking point. I left not wanting to come back ever again.
To explain:
I brought my ~16-year old dog in to be euthanized, as he had had another seizure this morning and had lost function in his back legs, which only added on to other condition that had lessened his health over the years. I had to carry him to and from my car into the vet and he made absolutely no movement to get up when in the room. When the vet came in she began to ask what was going on, and, while I can't confirm it was her intent, she came off VERY condescending and telling me I was wrong about what was going on with him in his legs and that it was a different condition (arthritis) but that I was probably "too young" to know. She went on to suggest I treat my dog and criticize me, saying age is not a factor to put down a dog--that it's like saying I should put down an elderly person because they're old. She even had the gall to suggest I treat my debilitated, 16-year old dog for supposed "arthritis" he may have had (she did not actually confirm) as if to say he wasn't suffering, even though he was splayed out on the floor, unable to get up, and breathing in an obviously haggard way due to a condition he's had for a while. I'm not a vet, but that's incredibly rude to say to a pet owner (and customer) who has come here to put an end to their pet's suffering, which wasn't an easy choice to begin with. And this was after I explained his debilitated condition where he was in failing health to the point keeping him alive was more cruel than euthanizing him. I found her behavior appalling, and, honestly, she made me feel like I was a terrible owner--as if I hadn't considered all options or tried to make his life as easy going as possible to the end. I honestly wish I'd said something before, but I was too worried she was going to tell me she wouldn't euthanize my dog and let his suffering go on.
I can't confirm that was her intent, and I would like to think a vet would NEVER actually purposefully intend to make a pet owner feel that way, but that is definitely how I felt after leaving. It was already difficult enough having to make this decision and bring him there and see him unable to walk, but then to have the vet talk down to me and make me feel even worse? That's unacceptable to me.
I will say, though, that the vet techs were wonderful. Both young ladies were very kind and considerate and very understanding. I felt immensely better when they began the process and did their best to make it go as smoothly and comfortably as possible.
Unfortunately, things were made worse yet again when given the bill. It might sound petty, but $300 for a euthanasia is ridiculous. It's bad enough losing your pet, but such a huge cost is like salt in the wound. I essentially have to keep telling myself it's okay because my dog is in a better place, but one can't help but feel the punch to the gut with having to pay so much to get my companion there.
I can say without hesitation we will be looking for a new vet now. This hasn't been the first visit that's left us frustrated, annoyed, and disappointed with the vet. We used to be happy with them, but ever since things changed (I believe due to a new owner) Critter Fixer now feels more like a money grab than caring for pets or their owners. I get vets are a business, but there's a limit, and they've reached it for myself and my family.
I hope others haven't experienced the same as me, and I don't want to spread blame to everyone there, as I know it's not all the vets, and the techs were wonderful, but if you've felt jilted by Critter Fixer know you're not alone. Read Less
