I've been coming here with my two yorkies for years. Extremely unfortunate I cannot get in anymore for last minute emergencies for my little pup Charlie because they are so busy and overbooked. It's really hard to have to try and find a vet you trust and a clinic that is well run but it looks like it's time for us to try another vet in the area :( Hoping the clinic will expand or hire another vet to their staff so they can continue to see already established patients. I couldn't get my injured cat into our usual vet. After super long wait times quoted at other hospitals, I called Sugar House Veterinary Hospital. I was immediately given an appointment for later in the day. The staff was incredibly kind and they were so caring with our cat. The Vet was so thoughtful- pain management was her priority which was ours as well. Our cat was fixed up in no time. I would highly recommend this place to anyone in need of a vet for preventative or emergent care. Read Less

In 1997, I took my first greyhound to Sugar House vet, on recommendation from a greyhound owner friend, because this office was known for being savvy of the special needs of greyhounds. All the vets on the staff were knowledgeable and took care to explain options and give suggestions about my dog's care. I moved out of state for six years and returned with two "new" dogs and came back to Sugar House vet for their care. I'm still very satisfied with the care provided by the docs and vet techs here. They have always been professional and friendly. Now we have an African Grey parrot, too and his first visit to Sugar House was much easier than I thought it would be (given how finicky this breed of bird can be towards most people), because Dr. Latimer knew exactly how to handle the bird! This review is mainly 5 stars because Suzanne is so wonderful. She went out of her way to make sure an expensive surgery fit my budget and she treated my pup like a queen! I am so grateful that I was able to afford to get my dog treated (she needed a bunch of staples and a tube for an injury) and she healed PERFECTLY! Suzanne also reminded me that my girl needed her shots but didn’t make me feel bad that I couldn’t do them right away for financial reasons. Great experience during a scary time. Read Less

I have been visiting Sugar House Veterinary for 16 years now. They have the best Doctors and some of the most amazing Staff. Chihuahuas are a picky and nasty bunch but all of people there make me know that they care and our dogs (in their own chihuahua way) love them! I brought our sweet baby Coco in for euthanasia and it was a touching experience. All the care that led up to that experience was thoughtful and straightforward. I knew exactly where I was taking our adopted dog when we brought him home. 2/11/18: We have two dogs with very different spirits and they are both so loved and cared for at Sugar House Veterinary. The staff is amazing to both of our dogs who have two very different personalities. We have one who would rip off the face of any stranger and he goes to them gladly. I can't recommend them enough. Never have I ever stepped foot in such a fantastic vets office. They have been nothing but AMAZING to my pit mix and I. We had her surgery at a different clinic in an emergency situation and were not very happy at all with the care we received there, I called these guys up last minuet on a Thursday night in a panic because I couldn't change her bandage correctly and the vet on call had me bring her right in and from then on we have been seeing them for her post surgery care which is 3-4 times a week. Every time you walk through the door they all know exactly who you are and who my dog is and it really makes you feel that much more comfortable. The techs, vets, front staff, environment. All 10/10. I would drive an hours to see them, but thankfully they are also just right around the corner and in such a convenient location. Read Less

I have been to several vet clinics to service my animals. I haven't ever felt the desire to stay with a particular clinic until now, Sugar House Vet has been the most personable and professional by far. Today I was stressed and worried taking my puppy to get neutered€. The technician was busy but, she took plenty of time to answer all my questions and explain the whole process. During the day they gave me updates on how things were going as well. They were very understanding and I could tell when I picked€ Louix up that he had been well taken care of. I felt like they had shown him all the love and care that I would have given him if I were there, which is impressive. Other places I've felt like they don't care or they had seen my pet as another thing to worry about. Here, at Sugar House Vet, they've earned my loyalty by caring for my baby. A few notes though, this clinic is one of the more expensive ones I've been to. Cost, however, was not my biggest concern or priority. I needed tons of reassurance and peace of mind that Louix was getting the absolutely best care. And he did here. Another thing to mention, the receptionists are a little out of the loop on exactly it's going on, they are a little all over the place with checking clients in and answering the phone and most don't know or fully understand some questions. To get the most accurate information, always ask the receptionist to double check with the technician or veterinarian. But, that doesn't affect their rating because it's not their job to know. Don't waste your time. I was concerned my cat had a urinary blockage and called to make an appointment. The woman I spoke to seemed impatient, short tempered, and entirely unpleasant. I called back and left a message for the manager Pam. No call back. I called Pam again and explained my experience to her. She told me that didn't sound like her staff, and she trained them in communication. That's ironic. Communication involves listening, acknowledging, and problem solving. None of which happened with Pam. She then said that there's two sides to every story and left it at that. The attitude of the staff is a direct reflection of the standards of the management. Which in this case, is perfectly aligned in a negative way. In my view, if you want compassionate, professional, courteous service, you won't find it here. Read Less

They have terrible customer service. We were sent to collections for their mistake. I took our cat in to have some teeth pulled. A few days before I took her in to get blood work done and they asked if I wanted to pay that day or the day of her surgery. I opted for the day of surgery so it would be one bill. When I picked her up I made my payment at the counter. It was a bit more than what they estimated, so I thought nothing of it. The next day they called my boyfriend and said that they didn't charge for the blood work and we could pay for it during our next visit. I thought it was strange because the paperwork showed the checkup appointment was in a few months, but I figured it would be fine. We heard nothing for a while, until my boyfriend got hit with a collections letter at work. It was from the vet for the blood work. We were charged about $30 more for it going to collections. The vet never called us or mailed us asking us to pay the bill. The funny thing is that they were constantly calling us before the appointment to remind us of the appointment. They are willing to call 5 times in a week just to remind us of one appointment, but they can't call us to say "Hey, you need to pay this." I would have been willing to pay over the phone, it would not have been a problem. A side note is that they never seemed to figure out I was a different person than my boyfriend. No matter how many times I gave my name or wrote my name on paperwork they would call me "Kaden." The only reason I am giving an extra star is because the vet work seemed good enough. But I am definitely never going there again. Read Less

I took my 6 month old vizsla named "Basil" into Sugarhouse Vet to get spayed. The clinic is very clean and all staff interactions were positive and friendly. Dara, the vet tech that assisted us prior to and after surgery was awesome. Her knowledge and professionalism was top notch, and I actually thought she was the vet at first! She called me right after the surgery to give me an update and inform me of how well Basil did. Dr. Belnap was very kind and took well to my hyper puppy jumping all over him prior to surgery. The incision mark is very clean and minimal in size from what I was expecting! Yes, it's more expensive to get your dog spayed or neutered here compared to other places. However, everything was explained to me up front and I was given options on what I wanted done for my pup. There were no surprises when it was time to pay. This vet is the perfect reason why pets are in shelters and homeless.  People can't afford the vet bills and it's not right that places like this try and take advantage of that.  This vet is not out to help the animals.  They're out to turn profit.  Every bit of information is available online, and when you need to treat your cat for ear mites, it should be as simple as walking in and asking for a solution of pesticide.  Not so difficult, but instead they want you to pay for a visit, then a test, then for some ridiculously overpriced injection.  Furthermore, when your cat has cystitis and you need special food, you can't just buy the food, you have to spend $300 for stupid blood work and visits so that you can get a prescription to buy the food.  What a terrible vet!! M glad they "care" so much for the animals.  Go somewhere else and avoid this place!! Nobody at this vet cares about your animal!  They only care about money! Read Less

This place used to be great. Now they are only after your cash.I've been going here for years, sick dogs, stitches, kennel cough, new adopted dog inspections, shots, etc... they were an amazing place a few years ago, but I'll never be back again.Waited two weeks for their next open appointment, then spend over half an hour in their waiting room after my appointment time. 10 more minutes in the exam room before they made it in.I took my dog in for bad breath. The Dr. hardly looked at her. Within a few minutes he was out of the room and it was time to talk billing. Tooth extractions -- for how many teeth they didn't know, for which teeth they didn't know! They would have actually needed to examine her teeth to know that stuff! XRays, Blood work, and anesthesia totaled over $1,000! (well 900 - 1200 because they didn't know how many teeth to pull).Last time we had a dog that needed stitches, teeth extractions, and fatty lumps removed our total was $450.Ready for the real kicker? When I asked the tech why their prices had more than doubled in just a couple of years her response was that ***it wasn't worth their time anymore to work for so little.***They get more patients, get more busy, spend less time with the people and animals they are service and charge more for it. Successful practices should be just the opposite. They are doing well so they can afford to provide BETTER service, not lessen it so they can push more people through and put more cash in their pocket.Next vet I took my dog too inspected her teeth and said that they "Absolutely do not need extraction" Just a good cleaning and some follow up care. So glad I got a second opinion! Read Less

A few days ago, we attempted to have out cat's nails cut. She is very difficult and tends to panic under stress. Because of this, the staff was not able to cut any of her nails. But we had already paid, and the employee at the front desk, Paige, refused to refund our money, even though no service had been provided. The technician suggested that we try acepromazine to calm the cat. Paige said that we would have to do an exam, an x-ray and blood work before we would be able to receive the medication, and then we would have to pay again for the prescription, dispensing fees, and the medication, for a grand total of over $400. She was very rude through the whole thing. We returned today and were surprised to find that it was significantly easier to receive the medication. Julie, the employee who helped us today did not charge us because the nails were not cut, and she credited us what we paid last time and put it toward the acepromazine. I have been taking my dog here for nearly 3 years and I have always been very happy with the services they provide for him. The front desk staff and technicians are very nice and I've always felt like they've been very good to my dog. He's a member of our family and I would not take him to this vet if I didn't feel like he was getting the best care. Their prices are also very reasonable, which I appreciate. The doctors are very nice and have always been willing to give me a call when I have questions. They have also called me after visits to follow up and make sure everything is going well. I particularly like Dr. Latimer and Dr. Vetter and their approach to caring for my dog. I've worked primarily with Dr. Latimer and I really like that he listens to me, takes time to fully answer my questions, and I can tell that he truly cares about taking care of my dog. For example, my dog had an infection that wouldn't go away. After a few rounds of antibiotics, Dr. Latimer suggested surgery as a treatment option. I didn't want to do the surgery unless we absolutely had to, and he was very understanding of my concerns. Dr. Latimer did everything he could to find the cause of the infection, got us the right antibiotics, and eventually the infection went away. I was really impressed with his knowledge of veterinary care and the care he took with my dog.    After I've said all this great stuff about them, I hate to throw in a bad part but I have to mention that I do not like Dr. Belnap at all. He comes across as cocky, arrogant, and I felt like he was dishonest with me. The only reason why I include this is because I would encourage you to see any other doctor there. It is still a great place to take your pets despite one bad apple. When I call for appointments I just request Dr. Latimer or Dr. Vetter so that we don't have to see Dr. Belnap again. Read Less

The receptionist took me to an exam room where I explained my dog's symptoms: excessive drinking and urinating, weight loss, decreased appetite, few-to-no bowel movements, and lethargy. I also mentioned a cough that sounded like he was trying to expel something caught in his throat. (He had never had this cough before this weekend.) She mentioned that it could be kennel cough. However, my dog had never been diagnosed with kennel cough and had not been anywhere lately to catch it. After she finished, the vet-tech came in to check out my dog. He asked me if my dog had thrown up or had diarrhea. I told him that I personally had not witnessed my dog throwing up or having diarrhea, but my mom had witnessed my dog throwing up. I also told him that I found runny stool--not quite diarrhea--in my house, but I didn't know if it was from my sick dog or my other dog who may had eaten something. The vet-tech said the runny stool was likely from my sick dog since remnants of stool were stuck on his fur. Next, the doctor came in. The doctor listened to my dogs breathing, checked for dehydration, and felt his stomach for abnormalities. The doctor told me that my dog was severely dehydrated and that they needed to do blood work to determine the illness. I happily let them run the tests. The doctor told me that he would call me with my dog's results in the morning on Tuesday. I mentioned that my dog's symptoms sounded like diabetes, but the doctor told me that some symptoms my look like one thing but may be something else. The doctor sent me home with my sick dog and nothing but a stool/urine sample bag. The doctor never mentioned getting my "severely dehydrated" dog an IV.  The next morning, I waited for Sugar House Vet to call me with the results. Nothing. I called them twice that morning. The receptionists had no one there to read me the results. Finally, my father called around 12:30 PM (noon) and demanded another doctor to read the results. The results were not good. The doctor even said, "This dog should be hospitalized." After that, I rushed my dog to an emergency vet where they took him in and tried stabilizing him. I would have done this sooner, but I trusted Sugar House Vet to do the right thing and have my dog's health in mind. Given that Sugar House Vet lacked a lab to expedite the diagnosis, given that my dog was severely sick,  the the doctor should have referred me to another vet that had the proper facility the day I initially took him into the vet. I feel that the doctor did not have the best interest of me or my dog at heart. My dog died at the ER vet Wednesday morning. Who knows what that extra day would have done for my baby boy?I will never go to Sugar House Veterinary Hospital again.

All 10/10.

Read Less

The incision mark is very clean and minimal in size from what I was expecting! Yes, it's more expensive to get your dog spayed or neutered here compared to other places. However, everything was explained to me up front and I was given options on what I wanted done for my pup. There were no surprises when it was time to pay. My Basil is my baby and I am so glad that I took her to Sugarhouse vet. I felt that the staff cared about her like she was their own. Thank you Sugarhouse Vet!! Read Less

Read Less

The doctor herself was wonderful and the technician was very knowledgeable. But the ladies at the front desk had very little information and replied "I'm not sure" to about every question I had. My puppy had an emergency so I assumed that an animal "hospital" would be able to help him and send me a bill considering I'm a student and live paycheck to paycheck. I ended up leaving the place almost in tears because of the frustration they caused. I asked multiple times to set up a payment plan or if they had any other options but nobody seemed to have any answers. I went there because they are so close to where I live but next time I will definitely take the extra minutes to drive to University Veterinary Hospital. They have much more sympathy towards all kinds of "families".. Even single dog mommies!

She is tr uly the only good thing this business has going for it. I have no intention of continuing our business relationship. Read Less

Read Less

I will never go to Sugar House Vet again. I took my dog to Sugar House Veterinary Hospital when he became extremely ill over the weekend. I made an emergency appointment on Monday, March 24th. Read Less

Doctors are incredibly knowledgeable and fantastic to work with. I ended up having to put my rat to sleep, but they were so caring and kind about the whole thing--I even got a sympathy card from the whole staff 2 weeks later.
