My granddaughters guinea pig was diagnosed with cysts on her ovaries by Wasatch Exotic Pet Care. They recommended surgery to have her ovaries removed. Last Wednesday she was dropped off for surgery. Supposedly the surgery went well and we picked her up the next day. At this time we were never given any instructions as to what to watch for or what to expect. She seemed sleepy and wasn't eating much. We assumed this was normal because we were never told otherwise. Saturday morning she wasn't eating or moving at all. And there was blood on her bedding. We called WEPC to report this thinking they would want us to bring her in but instead they told us to come up and buy some Critcal Care Herbivore to feed her. And put a white towel in her cage to monitor the bleeding. They said if the bleeding continued then we could take her in but there would be additional charges. She died 7 hours later. My granddaughter was heartbroken. We called the next morning and told the receptionist to let the doctor know she had died. Its been 4 days and they haven't even reached out to us. Our other guinea pig was scheduled to be neutered the following week. We cancelled that surgery as we will not be going back to them. I think WEPC should do a better job communicating with their customers. Always do your homework when choosing a Vet for your pets. Read Less

Cynthia, I attempted to reach you by phone today, but was only able to leave a voicemail. I cannot express how very sorry I am for your loss. I unfortunately was only made aware of Mandi's passing via your review, which is unacceptable. After looking into this I discovered that you were not given proper advice. We do not charge emergency fees or recheck exam fees for patients who have just undergone surgery. I always want post-surgical patients to come back in if they are having complications. The staff member who advised you went against policy and as it happens had resigned their position last week. Communication with clients has proven to be very challenging with the COVID19 situation, nonetheless, we failed. I know this won't bring your sweet one back, but I am more than happy to discuss this situation further if you want to call me, and am willing to do anything I can to make this right. Once again, my sincerest apology and condolences. Dr. Harris

Do your research. Save your birds and exotic animals and DONT go here. Call the rescues they will tell you to go else where. They don’t know how to properly handle animals and not only are your animals taken inside and your not able to see what’s going on with your animals they end up mistreated while inside. Only techs there which they have zero tech training and they don’t care about your animals it’s just a job to them, bare minimum care. I feel bad for the animals that live there. She doesn’t even take care of them herself. She hoards them. Dr Harris doesn’t even know what to do when there is a crashing animal. She verbally abuses her staff it’s embarrassing. she can’t even keep staff. Go elsewhere!!! Mountain West Veterinary specialists or Parrish Creek!!! Those clinics actually give the QUALITY care the exotics deserve and your not wasting your money! Do your research for your animals safety!! Read Less

Please choose a potentially longer drive over this clinic. I brought my rat in for an emergency when he suddenly started showing symptoms of being sick. We were told that his treatment plan would be a few nights at the vet in an incubator. That was fine- anything to get him better! I called the next morning only to find out he had died a few hours before I called. When we went to pick him up, Dr. Harris told us that he was obviously very sick for a very long time. What she said to us gave us the impression that she knew he was going to die, yet did not give us the option to euthanize him and be by his side as he passed. She said that he was emancipated, which he was not. He was also balding, but that’s his fur type, so we could not have told much about his current state from that. Dr. Harris gave us the impression that she thought of us as terrible pet owners that had neglected our pet. Thank goodness for Shellie- she was wonderful and comforted me, hugging and assuring me that we did our best and that these things happen so fast in rats. I was still charged nearly $300 to have my beloved Scout die and not have an option to put him down while he was with me, or be told that he may die. I recently brought my other 3 to Parrish Creek Veterinary Clinic, and heard from a woman next to me that she had also had a similar experience and came here- I’ve now heard this from MANY people. You can also find very similar stories and reviews to ours about this clinic, which makes it seem that this is a recurring situation. Read Less

The receptionist Zoe is extremely nice and takes care of your needs like it was her own pet. I called in concern of my snake's breathing, and she looks up his visit history, asked me about his bedding situation, etc. Extremely nice and genuinely cares about your pet.
I also took my snake in last January to see doctor Payne. He was nice to my snake, examined his body and his teeth (finding a worrisome scale to monitor for the next few months), and doing a sex check to inform me that my 6 years of believing he was a boy is in fact wrong- IT'S A GIRL.
Overall, I'm thankful they are there. They've done a good job so far and haven't had any problems. Read Less

He didn’t seem to be doing so great so I called their emergency line so I could get him in sooner and was told they could not take emergency calls at the moment. My rat started to get worse so I called EVERYWHERE and no one else could see him because they don’t treat rats. Well since I couldn’t get him in his health declined way quicker than I thought and I had to watch him slowly slip away. The receptionists were friendly and invested in the health of my snake when I called with questions and made the appointment. It was an uncomfortable experience for my snake because she doesn’t like her head being touched, but the vet was just as awesome and very gentle with her. They answered all my questions, recommended a substrate that’s drastically improved the humidity in her enclosure, and were invested in making sure the husbandry and environment for her was perfect. I brought my Quaker parrot in because he had taken ill. I was initially told that the appointment would be considered an emergency visit because all appointments were booked for that day. Upon arriving to the clinic there was a cancellation and I was told that my parrot would be able to take that time slot, so I would not have to pay the $50.00 emergency fee. Due to my pets declining health I ended up euthanizing her. I realized after arriving back home that I had in fact been charged the emergency fee. I called and was told that " all appointments that day were emergency visits". This just didn't make sense because when we first arrived the receptionist announced to the tech that the " emergency bird" was in. It was only later during the visit we were told about the cancellation and that we would not be charged the fee. For me, it's not really about the $50.00 ( I ended up paying $350.00 for an exray etc) it's about customer service. When you are running a business all staff members should be on the same page. The doctor and vet tech were very helpful and kind. However, when I brought in my rabbit because she wasn't eating, I specifically asked them to check if she was pregnant. The vet said they thoroughly examined her and said she wasn't pregnant. A week later, I woke up to a litter of babies! This was frustrating to me because the vet had prescribed my rabbit medications that could potentially have harmed the babies because apparently the vet can't tell if a rabbit is pregant or not... My first visit to this clinic I was very impressed how nice and respectful everyone was. I brought my bearded dragon in for a few tests since she rapidly declined in health within a few days randomly. Dr. Payne was able to properly diagnose her with a fatal condition. Although the sad end result was euthanasia, I'm glad he was able to take the time and figure out what was wrong with my baby, unlike most vets would've just seen she was a little dehydrated and sent me on my way. He did a thorough examination on her, and gave me my options on testing to look into it further. He even included the pricing on everything so nothing popped up as a cost unexpectedly! Honestly my past experience with other vets cost Wasatch Exotic Pet Care has great prices. Although my first visit was a sad one I highly recommend them, and any new reptiles I get in the future I will definitely be going here for their care! Took my bunny there because she wasn't eating and pooping very much. Vet said it was just holiday stress, even though I told her my bunny doesn't get stressed and we didn't do anything for the holidays. I had taken her to sugar house vet previously and she was examined and the vet there said her teeth and everything was great. Once my bunny's condition did not improve even with the medications, I took her in again. This time the vet intern said her teeth were all bad and they all needed to be filled down. Which makes no sense because two vets checked her teeth that week and said they were fine. I told the intern he had to take a radiogram of her body because I know there's something wrong with her digestive track. He agrees to take a radiogram of her body along with countless unnecessary radiograms of her head which required my exhausted bunny to undergo anastasia. I blame myself for not finding a different vet sooner and for letting myself be convinced by these over priced "experts." The worst part is the intern left me a voice mail after the clinic had already closed so when I called back there was no way to get ahold of anyone to ask questions because Dun Dun Dun turns out I Was Right; It wasn't stress and it wasn't her teeth it was her GI Tract. I got the unsympathetic call the next morning saying she had died overnight. They left me standing in the lobby until the receptionist awkwardly demanded I pay up then they handed me my dead rabbit. They agreed and when we saw him we could tell he was dead in the incubator. The assistant heard my wife and when we left the room they claimed that he died within minutes. We had an emergency with our budgie involving a broken leg. They charge an emergency fee rivaling that of most human emergency rooms but we didn't have many options. We took our budget in and they put a cast on him. One week later during a follow up visit they were going to replace the cast but the bird died when they gave him anesthesia.
I suspect (but cannot prove) they gave him too much. My sister is a vet but does not specialize in birds and I understand this is a common mistake. Maybe they are also still using halothane and not isoflurane or sevoflurane which are much safer for birds. I would call them and ask but their customer service leaves a bit to be desired and I agree with other reviewers that it definitely feels like they are far more interested in the fees than caring for your pet. I went in with my favorite mouse who's stomach had tripled in size and when I would sit him up he was gasping for air and it was the saddest thing I ever experienced. They found out that she had gotten wedged behind his wheel, couldn't get out and flailed around in panick; causing internal bleeding into his stomach. He was in pain but they were able to keep me calm 100% and were patient with my time to think and giving me choices without being pushy for one thing or another. (Decided to euthanize him.) then a week later I received a condolences letter with my little guys paw prints inked into the card!!!! It helped so much with the closure! Thank you guys so much! I have had many awful experiences with this business. If you don't have time to read the entire thing just know: they only care about the money. I will list the many things they did that no one should have to deal with while worrying about the life of their pet. 1) I had to put my guinea pig down because he stopped eating. They told me this was likely because of bullying. I paid them to do an autopsy to be sure that was the reason and I had them cremate him. Later I brought his identical twin brother in and asked about the autopsy which I was told wasn't done because they summed up it was bullying. I believe the autopsy may have prevented what later happened with his twin.. 2) My current guinea pig started acting depressed because of losing his brother so they suggested I buy other guinea pigs to keep him company and now I have three guinea pigs separated. 3) My guinea pig hurt his leg and stopped eating. His leg healed but he never started eating again. I was told the only way to figure out what was wrong was an x-ray, I also decided to get his teeth trimmed at the same time to help him eat. I took him in at 9AM and called and called until at 6PM was told I could pick him up at 8PM. It took 11 hours. They still didn't know what was wrong, all I heard was "I've never seen this before." They prescribed many antibiotics and pain medications. I asked for copies of the x-rays and was told they would be able to fax them if I ever needed them. 4) I realized the medications they gave me evaporated, most of the syringes had 1/4 of what I paid for and some were empty. I also had concerns about the side effects of the medications. So, I called every day for a week and updated my phone number every time and never heard back from them. A week later I express that I am upset because I have been trying to get in contact with anyone who can discuss these things with me and the secretary says "I have your phone number they'll probably call you back." Probably just wasn't okay with me at this point so I call a few hours later and luckily the vet has time to speak with me. 5) They only replace the completely empty syringes, not the ones that are mostly empty. When they give me the replacements I realize the other ones evaporated because they used the wrong syringes. 6) While discussing the side effects she tells me over and over again that these are not side effects of the medications and if he is doing these things he has to be euthanized. Even though I make her aware that when he was on the same medication before he had the same side effects and when he was taken off that medication he stopped having the side effects. She then says "I'm just going to transfer you to our secretary to schedule when you want to euthanize him." After being transferred I tell her that I want to cancel all future appointments. The medications are really what almost killed him. 7) I go to a new vet and she needs the x-rays to review. She calls to have Wasatch fax them over. An hour later she gives me a call and says she called them because they never faxed them over and they said she had to go get them which she was unable to do. So, I drove the half hour to get them and they tell me there's a fee to check them out but I can take a picture which will work just fine. I take the picture to the other vet who says they should know the picture isn't going to do. 8) I get a bill in the mail saying I missed an appointment and I now owe them more money. I know I cancelled my appointments so I call. The secretaries who cannot enter a phone number so that I can be called back also could not cancel the appointment. The poor girl that I have never spoken to before got the blunt of my frustrations. She tells me there is nothing she can do so I'll just have to pay it. After much arguing she says she can remove the missed appointment fee but if I miss another appointment the fee will not be removed. Which, I will never ever go back to Wasatch. Read Less

My rabbit Daisy was having a really soft stool (which is not normal), and I was able to get an appointment quickly (the next day) to have her looked at. Dr. Harris did a very good job handling and examining her even though Daisy was being difficult. She was able to determine that my rabbit was having problems with her teeth, and she couldn't eat hay because of it, causing her soft stool. She also said that my rabbit would have to have a surgery where her teeth would be ground down, and it happened just two weeks later. They took very good care of my rabbit before and after the surgery. Daisy is doing a lot better now, and her stool is back to normal. I definitely recommend Wasatch Exotic Pet Care to anyone with a rabbit! :)Read Less

Dr. Harris and her staff have been amazing at treating my Netherland Dward rabbit with her recurring abscesses. No other rabbit-savvy vet was willing to treat this condition due to the abscesses' location. The condition has been difficult but Dr. Harris is doing her best at keeping my rabbit healthy and out of her office. I was happily surprised when I e-mailed Dr. Harris an article I found online and she recognized the author. She mentioned how she has attended seminars by him, which shows that she stays on top of things in her field. The staff is also excellent and knowledgeable. I like that whenever my rabbit is being observed, there are two people in the run to prevent her from injuring herself (if she tries to escape). This practice has been the first one to provide me with a low and high estimate before any significant treatment, like surgery. Given my rabbit's health problems, I highly appreciate this. Furthermore, they are very reasonable with their cost of appointments and treatments. Read Less

Dr. Harris and her staff took very good care of our ferret when he had an ulcer that caused him to stop eating. We left him there for several days and they syringe fed him and gave medication that allowed him to heal. In the past, we had taken our ferrets to another vet who sees mostly cats and dogs. In comparison, it is clear that Dr. Harris and her staff are much more experienced with and comfortable handling these little guys. They even work with a local ferret rescue to provide care for and find homes for ferrets. Read Less

Dr. Harris

Read Less

Thank you Dr. Payne for figuring out what was wrong with my girl and taking her out of her suffering before it got worse.Read Less

So get this!!! My daughter & her boyfriend had a hamster & their dog took a bite out of this poor hamster. My daughter called me in tears for they loved this hamster she stated the hamster was still alive & that they were going to take it to the vet. I'm thinking to myself there's no way the hamster is going to make it, but its 5 days before Christmas. So I tell my 18 yr old daughter its okay just use my visa. Well the hamster didn't make it, so they had to put the hamster down. My daughter was so sad & I never even thought to ask her how much it was i figured it's a 10 dollar hamster right!!? Well I got my credit card statement in the mail & looked it over. They charged 115.00 bucks to put a hamster down A HAMSTER???? your kidding? They pretty much just took advantage of an 18 yr old. And it was the holidays are they really that hard up???? You couldn't just look at the poor hamster & say hey were sorry this lil guy isn't going to make it. HELL NO they saw it as a quick 100 bucks!!!!!!!! word of mouth is big business & i'm having the best time telling people about this story!!!!!! Read Less

I couldn't be more impressed by the way my rats have been treated by the Wasatch Exotic Pet Care team. I have worked closely with Dr. Payne (what an incredibly caring vet, seriously) for a couple months now trying to figure out one chronic issue, and trying to stabilize a mess of sicknesses. It has been chaos and I have been treated with patience and kindness even with all my stressing and worrying about my pets. Even with all the countless emails, appointments, phone calls, and hours put into helping a total of 5 rats (and giving me some peace of mind), Dr Payne has been incredibly patient and caring with my rats and willing to definitely do more for my pets than I would expect a typical vet to do. I couldn't be more grateful for all the help I have recieved. There is no way I would take my pets elsewhere even if it was free. I highly recommend these guys, they are willing to explore and take all the steps necessary to get your pets the help they need, and I never felt pushed in and out the door. I could go on and on and on singing praise. Thank you so much to this awesome clinic. Read Less

So many unprofessional occurrences one after the other makes the pain of losing my best friend even worse.Read Less

Exotic undertakers killed my pet. I paid what was called an emergency fee however when they called me it was 6 to 7 hours later to tell me what they wanted to do. What does emergency mean to them? I was told they wanted to keep him for 2 to 3 days, run tests and that it would cost $380. We were about 5 minutes away and told them we wanted to see him because he might not make it. They agreed and when we saw him we could tell he was dead in the incubator. The assistant heard my wife and when we left the room they claimed that he died within minutes. He was stiff which means he had been dead for some time. I believe that they would of went through with everything if they hadn't heard my wife. They lack integrity and honesty. My opinion is that they only care about money to pay for there new building. Read Less

My partner and I took in our young 5-6 month old rabbit. Dr. Wood was so wonderful. She created an atmosphere of kindness, reassurance, knowledge, and care. We adopted our rabbit from the Humane Society, and he had a scab when we first adopted him that has now healed, we wanted to just come in for a wellness exam to make sure everything was in the clear. Our rabbit Leo is a bit sassy and bites and scratches because he's trying to say he's the head rabbit in the house. Dr. Wood taught us some great techniques to do when your rabbit snips at you. She is very intelligent and knows what she is talking about. She is kind, and filled the room with smiles after what I imagine was a long work day. Thank you Dr. Wood for your help and for taking care of Leo for us! The front office staff was very inviting and friendly too, they seem to be doing very well even though they are in a temporary space while their new space is being built.

Read Less
