Wasatch Springs Animal Hospital

Salt Lake City, Utah
General Info
Motto: Best Care! Best Cost! Best Value!
Dr. Michael Blotter grew up outside of Utah. His parents are both from the Cache Valley area, but he was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. At a young age he found his love for animals, as he breed his two golden retrievers, Logan and Flaxen. Dr. Blotter received his undergraduate degree in Animal Science from BYU in 1986, where he met and married his sweetheart Shauna. They then went off to Vet School at the Ohio State University, where he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) in 1990. After graduation, he did an internship in southern California working on animals of the “rich and famous”! His entry to private practice was in rural North Carolina, where he cared for large animals (primarily farm animals) for a year before moving his family to Utah in May of 1991. Dr. Blotter took over ownership of this hospital in 2000, and is the sole practitioner here. Now a father of five, he has passed on his love of animals to his children, as each of his boys have worked along side him at the hospital. His youngest daughter (9) loves to go to work with daddy, and can often be found at the front desk greeting the VIP’s {Very Important Pets}.

If I could give this vet zero stars I would. I never leave reviews but I feel this is important and people need to know how negligent this vet office is. We took our 7 year old shih tzu there to have her teeth cleaned. We had her examined at another vet 3 months ago but they were booked out and my grandparents recommended this vet since this is where they bring their 11 year old rescue shih tzu. She also had her teeth cleaned a few months ago and has had some ear infections and my grandparents can’t say enough about this office and said they were reasonable price so we thought we would give them a try. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS! They told me to bring her in between 8 and 9am. The front lady was nice I filled some paper work out. Our Mollie was to get updated shots and her teeth cleaned. They lady said we could call around 12pm to see how she was doing and pick her up around 4pm. At 11:30am I got a phone call from the Dr. who said they had to pull 10 teeth and while she was in recovery she started to have labored breathing and they did everything they could but she DIED a half hour ago! He said she had a heart murmur. I obviously was very upset and needed to call my mother because this is her dog. This is her baby her companion that my step dad bought for her as he works out of town for extended amounts of time. I had to call my mother while she was at work to tell her what had happened. She came home from work and I’ve never seen my mom so upset or broken hearted. She was inconsolable I’ve never heard my mom cry like she did she cried for at least 3 days. My grandparents went to the vet to pick up our mollie girl and bring her home to us. While at the vet they were told the infection in her mouth was so bad that it was in her blood and she had a heart murmur. I have a hard time believing this as she was checked at another very reputable vet in the valley 3 months ago. Who listened to her heart and didn’t say anything about a murmur and looked at her teether and did say yea they weren’t in the best condition and did need to be cleaned but nothing about this insane infection. The morning of she was playing in the snow with our other shih tzu who is almost four years young. She ate fine, she played with other dogs, she was never lethargic or showed signs of being sick like this vet claims. For her going there for the first time I would have thought they would require a pre exam before the teeth cleaning since they know nothing about her. If they did they would have easily heard this so called heart murmur and not gone forward with the surgery or called us because it wasn’t mentioned on her paperwork. But nope drop her off at this time, sign here and pick her up at this time. My grandparents took her back to the vet as my mother decided to cremate her, but a few hours changed her mind and when she called was told “be here by noon that’s when we close”click. My mom and step dad went to pick up our girl and the front desk lady brought her out in a black bag and just smacked her on the desk like she was garbage. This woman had no sympathy or empathy for what had happened. My mom tried to ask questions and she would cut my mom off and said “ well sometimes they just die” This lady is awful. We received a card in the mail from them and it’s so generic. It’s like they take inventory of how many pets died that week and write the same thing on each card and whoever wrote the card signs everyone’s name. This vet is AWFUL! He shouldn’t be practicing because he obviously doesn’t care about animals and is just trying to make a quick buck and the lady up front needs a reality check on people skills. Our Mollie should have never died that day. Every time we spoke to them on the phone after she died they stumbled over their words as if they knew they did something wrong. She wasn’t this sick she shouldn’t have died. We shouldn’t be missing her right now. Our family is devastated over this and our other fur baby doesn’t know why her best friend isn’t home. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL THERE UNLESS YOU WANT IT WORSE OFF OR KILLED! Read Less

I took my 9 month old Labradoodle, Charly, to Wasatch Springs to be spayed. Due to a mistake during surgery and negligence by Dr. Blotter, she had to have emergency surgery the following day at Advanced Veterinary Care to save her life. She had severe internal bleeding and another Dr had to fix Dr Blotter’s mistake. It has cost us almost $3,000 in emergency vet bills and Dr. Blotter's office hasn't even followed up to see how Charly is doing and will not responded to our messages. I would greatly discourage trusting your pet's well being and life with this clinic. Please feel free to message me for more information. We almost lost Charly. I cannot rate this vet highly enough. It is the first time I have been completely satisfied with a vet experience. I really feel like Dr Blotter is entirely in me and my pet's corner. I was very sad to find out my cat has diabetes but they have helped me every step of the way and also made managing it extremely affordable. The price of a blood-glucose curve is literally 10% of what I was quoted elsewhere, and I know I got much much more personal attention than I would have there. They are readily available and appointments are never far out. Extremely friendly, prompt, professional. Everything was done well. They don't make you spend a lot of time waiting when you have an appointment like every other vet. Read Less

Love the Dr. and the staff. The office is very clean and welcoming. They gladly got my ill dog in to see the vet the same day on a Saturday. He was very pleasant to my not so friendly pooch. They did everything they could for my dog and tried to avoid him having an expensive surgery. When he did not get any better they were just as concerned and worried about my dog as I was. They had me bring him in as soon as the doctor was in. He ended up having to have surgery and they were very communicative about what the cost was going to be and how my dog was doing and even sent me pictures. I will continue to take my dog here for routine visits and would recommend them to everyone. Because of them my dog is alive and already feeling better the day after his surgery. I brought my cat here. He had cancer. The doctor correctly diagnosed my cat as having cancer. Often charging little and in some cases nothing for visits and advise. I took my cat to other Veterinarians in the area for a second opinions only to be charged for the visit without even receiving a diagnosis. As my cats health worsened, the Wasatch Springs staff was so kind as they continued to take my constant phone calls and questions when the others would not. I was able to request pain medications from pharmacies that Wasatch Springs didn't carry. They were kind, understanding and sensitive when the end came. The doctors original diagnosis, description and the course of the diseases' progress was completely correct within days. Unexpectedly I even received a card of condolence for my loss. I'm grateful for their competent staff, their inexpensive service, kind and considerate customer care and humane treatment that was afforded by them to my little friend and I. Read Less

We boarded our dog here for 4 nights and will not bring her back here. They only let dogs out once a day to go to the bathroom. When we told them that dogs need to go out more than once a day to poop and pee, they seemed shocked. One of the people at the front desk was providing terrible customer service, as she ignored us when we came in and then didn't understand that it is not okay to leave dogs in a cage all day, save a 15 minute walk. They also said that they are closed on Sundays and do not take dogs out, which means that dogs are just pooping and peeing in their small cages until someone comes in on Monday. This place is cheap for a reason. Read Less

The staff and Dr Blotter are the most caring and sensitive caregivers I could ask for. From a pup's broken leg to dog pancreatitis, to Cushing's Disease and everything in between for me, the over anxious dog owner, this clinic is above and beyond what you want in a veterinary clinic. I first saw Dr. Blotter in May of 2010 when my elderly Siamese needed to be put down. He was very understanding, so I continued to take my 3 dogs and various cats to Wasatch Springs for 6 years. Over time, I noticed there was often an awkward lack of communication or customer service. The prices seemed to be rising, too. And there was no discussion about costs prior to surgeries (especially a particularly pricey bladder surgery). On my last visit (not going back), I had called and made an appointment that day, stating the cat's name and what he was being seen for. When I arrived, they had no idea which cat or why (I'm down to one cat. Um.) After being in the exam room for 20 minutes past my appointment time, I learned Dr. Blotter wasn't even in the building and they didn't know where he was. "I'll text him" was all I got. When I returned to pick the cat up, I was hit with a huge bill ($279!!!) for just an abscess wound. Nobody was nearby to explain why it was so high, and there had been very little detail going in. Dr. Blotter was not there to explain - I would have been okay with some warning or at least some explanation. He hadn't gotten any maintenance shots or anything. I left a sarcastic good-bye note, paid, and left... only to find the cat was completely unconscious when I got home. He lost control of his bladder and I was sure he had DIED when I checked on him 2 hours later. A horrible experience at every stage. Never again. Read Less

Great vet. Treats my 3 cats and dog. Example of why I like Wasatch: A few years ago one of my cats had a serious knee injury. After a couple visits and an xray, turned out both her acl and mcl had been totally severed. Shizzle! Dr. Blotter was bracingly honest: no surgery. Cats don't rely on their hind legs to pivot (as dogs do) so surgery isn't as crucial to regain mobility. I wondered about pain meds, bc she was in lots of pain. Nope, pain meds make cats very sick. His recommendation: do nothing, she'll heal on her own. It will take 6 months, she'll be in lots of pain at first then less and less over time. Eventually her knee muscles will take over most of the work of her ligaments. He was right. It really really sucked for her for a while, but she gradually stopped hurting, regained 98% of her running and jumping ability (in 4 months!), and her knee hasn't been an issue since. I appeciate that Dr. Blotter didn't over treat. It might have made ME feel better, but it would have subjected my cat to lots of additional pain and stress. It certainly would have made Dr. Blotter more money. But instead he focused on what was good for his patient. He can be a bit terse but his treatment is excellent. Read Less

We didn't have a regular vet, because out kitty just showed up at our house and adopted us last year. He was having problems with his mouth and we found that Wasatch Springs was close to our house so we gave it a shot. Initial examination determined he would need a cleaning and they would look for broken teeth or infection while that procedure was being done. I was told we could leave him overnight since it was late in the day and could pick him up the next day at 3. After picking him up around 3 and bringing him home, he tried to eat a little and then threw that up almost immediately. I knew that the anesthesia would cause nausea and that it would take him awhile to snap out of it, but throughout the evening he became worse and worse until he was completely lifeless, non-responsive, eyes rolled back and tongue hanging out of his mouth. His skinny body was barely breathing at this point and I was worried we would lose him completely. I called Dr. Blotter at 10pm and he acted unconcerned and told me to just put water down his throat. After not getting a reaction at first, he finally flinched, drank it and started to come to. We watched him throughout the next two days. His body became skinnier and skinnier and he was not himself at all. On the second day, my friend who's an emergency vet tech came over to my house and gave him fluids under the skin and he immediately perked up. I called Dr. Blotter the next day to find out that he did NOT give my little kitty an IV drip or any fluids during his procedure as "that costs extra and most people decline that option". I let him know that if I knew this was an OPTION I would have chosen to pay for the additional charge. My baby almost died. If you choose this vets office, please ask for the IV drip as they will not automatically do this service. But, I highly recommend you do not as I will never go back. p.s. They never did find anything wrong with his mouth and I'm unsure if the initial problem has been resolved as he has been unable to eat much for three days. Read Less

Well...I must say after reading some of the negative reviews of Dr. Blotter I am shocked. One person said they had a problem with diagnosing a dog, another even had a bunny die during a routine procedure...ahhhh, that sounds awful, HOWEVER--I have had a 5 star experience with Dr. Blotter and been HIGHLY satisfied with his work. I raise rabbits. I have raised rabbits for a very long time and the first rabbit vet I found didn't take me seriously when I said I knew what I was doing with my rabbits. I also told her I really only needed her help in some specific areas--including neuters. She made me feel like she almost didn't have time for my questions, and definitely didn't respect my thoughts or opinions. Dr. Blotter has shown me both excellent service and respects my opinion AND answers all my questions, everytime. I have had (with friends I have recommended to Dr. Blotter) at least a dozen rabbits neutered. NEVER have I come back to the office to retrieve a dead rabbit or even one with problems. The Dr. also did my dogs teeth cleaning and quoted me a fair price and promised not to charge me more than we agreed if he had to pull a few teeth, he kept our agreement and did a great job with my tiny poodle. Overall, I have been very satisfied with Dr. Blotter and his front desk girls and will continue having him care for my rabbits and dogs. I highly recommend him and want to note that people have bad experiences with vets ALL THE TIME--it just happens. With a track record of neutering 12 rabbits problem free I feel confident recommending him to the general public. Read Less

Dr. Blotter and his staff are VERY kind and they are willing to go above and beyond, always being very attentive to and understanding of how important our pets are to our family. Dr. Blotter?is very knowledgeable, too, and his diagnosis and treatment were right on. They are all incredibly thoughtful and considerate. Our family has a?poodle and a chihuahua. On a few occasion we've had to take either to a vet in Park City who (until now) we used to think was the best. But, thanks to Wasatch Springs, we realized this PC vet's prices are outrageous, and his diagnoses felt like such rip-offs. We love our dogs to death, but we always despised the additional stress that this PC vet's quotes and unnecessary treatment options and expenses brought upon us. Unlike at that PC vet, everyone at Wasatch Springs made sure we (including our dogs and us) had a stress-free experience.?The doctor spoke of our dogs as if they were his own and recommended treatment options that were relatively affordable and that we felt in our hearts came from someone who deeply cared about all the pets he had helped heal. All in all, we are very appreciative for all their work and loving demeanor toward our pets. We recommend this place hands-down and it's now become our go-to vet. Read Less

I have a large dog! A Mastiff to be specific. He is getting up there in years (for a dog his size) and his demeanor toward vets has become increasingly negative over the last couple years. Usually Vets are identifiably intimidate by him. My dog has had some recent severe health issues that had me very worried. Since I have recently relocated to Salt Lake I googled a few vets and decided on Wasatch Springs Animal Hospital. I am glad that I did! The Vet has a natural way with large animals- my over sized pooch loves the Vet and the staff. (By the way most of the staff are family members of the Vet) The Vet was able to identify his problem immediately and potentially save my dogs life. He was very attentive and flexible. I expected to spend at least $500 more than I did. If your a dog owner/lover like myself money is not an issue when it comes to your "best friend" but it is very helpful to find a great Vet who works well with large dogs and offers affordable services and Medications. I cannot rave enough about Wasatch Springs Animal Hospital! The Vet is also available 24/7 if you leave an urgent message he will call you back- even in the middle of the night and on the weekends. Oh and I should mention that this is the cleanest veterinarian facility that I have ever visited. Read Less

Read Less

My preference has much to do with the convenience of this vet. They are always willing to make a quick change or sudden drop in visit. Very accomadating

Great news! Dr. Miner didn't stay! Its just Dr. Blotter and his excellent Staff. We love Wasatch Springs Animal Hospital in my household, wouldn't go anywhere else!

I am very saddened to learn that Dr. Miner is back. While Dr. Blotter is an okay doctor (not great), his senior partner is NOT what I would suggest to anyone who loves animals. When I was there a few years ago, both methods and equipment were out-dated. If you must go there and you love your pet (especially if it is a CAT) then definately request Dr. Blotter.

Read Less
