We usually use Southeast on an urgent care basis because their location isn't near us. Otherwise, they would be my regular vet. The staff have been overwhelmingly nice to both us and our dog, Mesa. I want to tell you about an experience when I didn't go to SVVH so you can see the contrast. I didn't go to SVVH the last time I had an urgent problem and it was a nightmare!!! At this other place in Cottonwood, we waited over two hours and were repeatedly told "because you're a walk-in, it may be a little bit because we need to see our appointments first" (though we were told to come in when we called). Okay, I understood and was fine with this....at first. After two hours of waiting, I realized this vet in Cottonwood was not about priority level, but more about how many pets they can fit in their schedule. Our dog threw up blood. That's why we called. I even brought in a sample of the bloody vomit to which they looked at and said, "Yep, that's blood. That's weird." No further testing. My husband is a doctor and I can tell you from experience, any time a doctor has so many patients that it takes them two hours from the time you arrive at their office until the time they see you, it's because they overbook their patients and it's about money, not patients. If they don't overbook their patients, urgent care does not turn in to a two-hour ordeal. They had three vets on duty. Obviously there was no priority level when it came to a dog who needed a regular check-up and a dog who is throwing up blood. We went to this other facility (not SVVH) because it was the number provided for urgent care from our regular vet and it was a Saturday. We sat at this other place (in Cottonwood, which has a great rating on line, go figure) for two hours before the vet came. I wish I had gone to SVVH in the first place. The Cottonwood vet was nice, but spent five minutes with us, gave our dog an anti-nausea, charged me for pills to coat her stomach in case it was an ulcer, sent us out to sit for 10 more minutes while we waited for pills, and then the assistant came out and said, "We don't have the pills. If she's still vomiting blood tomorrow come back for another anti-nausea injection." Ummm okay. If she's not vomiting then I get to call and ask them to refund the money I paid for the pills they don't have. That's what you can expect from that particular facility in Cottonwood.
Other places may charge a bit less, or no urgent fee at all and you can wait for two hours with a staff that isn't very personable while seeing many, many pets come and go, end up with a mystery diagnosis and a charge for pills you didn't receive or you can go to SVVH, pay the urgent fee, have them do a thorough work-up, see you in a reasonable time, and actually care about your pet. By the way, you can always turn down a test you aren't comfortable with so if a vet is testing for something you don't like, by all means speak up. Don't blame them if you agreed with the test to be done. I've never quite understood the previous negative reviews for SVVH, because I've never once had a bad experience there. Some of us do want the vet to be thorough like SVVH and are willing to pay for testing and urgent fees to get the best treatment. The best vets are not always the cheapest vets or the vets with "frills." I have never had a single problem with SVVH and they have diagnosed and treated all of our pets with 100% success so far.
