The surgeries and post-treatment could not have gone better, and the team kept me updated every step of the way. Dr. Kamei's kind and gentle demeanor makes her very approachable, and her thorough check-ups give me peace of mind that Reagan receiving the best care. Dr. Kamei and staff at Belle Haven Animal Hospital, My entire appointment was an f-up, from my intake call to leaving the practice. First, when I called to schedule the appointment, I was told you all do the 3-year feline rabies vaccination and that it was cheaper than the 1-year (specifically she said it was $40 per cat). When I asked about an office visit fee she said there wasn't one. This was the entire reason I made an appointment with your practice. My cats have had this very vaccination twice before, once in California and once in Florida so please spare me any splainy lectures about why you don't do it and how "nobody" does it, like the receptionist who checked me out on Monday who was so patronizing. Next, when I met you Dr. Kamei, you introduced a second doctor that you said was going to be with us. I thought little of is because you called him a  "doctor". I now know he was likely a veterinary student and was likely using MY CATS to practice drawing blood and giving shots. Apparently it was on me to say I did not want that, when I had been given zero information that was even a possibility. How shameful that you bamboozle your pet owners in this fashion. When it comes to my 2 cats, one is very afraid at the vet and I warned you all he would use his claws and bite. Dr. Kamei you asked if he could be taken to a different exam room. I wasn't sure...but my other vet who I trust has taken him into a separate room for his rabies vax when my cat was acting out in the extreme, so I assumed it was better for him to be away from me and cat #2 who was also present. So I said yes. But I felt like the question was a little bit hustling me "Let us the good DOCTORS take your cat to the other exam room where you can't SEE what we do, it's fine, we promise." Sometimes it is hard to say no or articulate why you want to say no, especially if your have anxiety like I do - and this was one of those times. You likely take advantage of pet parents' good faith in you & fear of speaking up in this manner all the time. When you came back with cat #1 who I had agreed to have blood work done on, you said he actually hadn't been too bad. So next was cat #2 who I had already told you is very easy at the vet. You took him out, weighed him with no trouble and he was very agreeable except for one small hiss. You, Dr. Kamei, said,  "I forgot my stethoscope" in the other exam room". I knew right away this was some convenient ploy to get the well-behaved cat out of my sight but at the same time couldn't find the words to say "HANG ON, WY DO YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CAT INTO THE OTHER ROOM?'  There was so much going on in my head (anxiety). Off you went with him and the other "Doctor", rather than simply stepping out to get your stethoscope. Again I had the feeling of being hustled but (maybe also because there were 2 of you) I felt I couldn't say anything. You did come back to ask if I wanted blood work on cat #2 since I had mentioned money being tight and it costs $280 a pop. I had already had the blood drawn from cat #1 when you told me this exorbitant fee. Again, I know you will frame it as my duty to ask about the prices but here's a thought: maybe blood work shouldn't cost more than the $150 it costs at other vets in the first place????? Maybe your clients shouldn't have to walk around trailing after you asking the price of every single test and procedure and item and maybe you at Belle Haven should just I don't know hear me out: charge fair prices to begin with???So my bill came to $665 for two cats to have a yearly exam, one cat to have blood work, and to get some eye drops and ear drops. THASSIT. Well, you also put 2 charges on as if you cleaned each cat's ears but I didn't see it...and even if you did, you didn't ask me and get approval (I can clean their ears - they both have ear problems, it was one of the reason I was at the vet - I needed advice about that issue, not a 'professional' ear cleaning x2)By the way, for anyone reading, of course they do not do 3-year feline rabies vax. And if you so much as ask about it they will shame and lecture you about how it's "unsafe" about how "nobody does it" and when you tell them someone FROM THEIR OFFICE set you up for a 2 3-year vaccinations, they will shrug and say "It must have been somebody new" and "she must have been talking about the distemper" or some other nonsense...I wanted to say WHY WOULD I CARE WHY SHE MADE THE MISTAKE?? Your office made a costly (to me) mistake. Of course you don't care. Your receptionist got me in the door and I spent almost $700. I'm sure it was no mistake. Today (6/27/18) I waited for a call from Dr. Kamei after complaining about my visit to the receptionist. No call back. I also did not get cat #1's blood work results back today as promised (Dr. K said to call if I didn't hear, so I called and got the runaround from yet another uninformed receptionist). I'm usually too lazy to post reviews but I just need to say I really love this vet. I've moved around a lot and taken my dog to many vets and while most have been great, this one feels like a step beyond. Dr. Nelson and Dr. Kamei are the only vets here my dog has seen -- both have been fantastic in treating her and being sensitive to my concerns about cost etc. And the front desk staff is super nice. I feel lucky to have easy access to this great animal medical center in Belle Haven. Sadly, I was only able to take our dog here towards the end of his life, but the care we received during his final months was exceptional. It's clear the veterinarians and staff here truly care about your pet, as was evidenced in the wellness check-up calls I received after we started our dog on a medication regimen. In addition, they are able to make last minute appointments after traditional work hours, which is a huge benefit to people who work 9-5 jobs in the District.The facility itself is very comfortable too, which is important in an environment that can be stressful and potentially mournful. Seemingly renovated from a former house, you truly feel like you're visiting a friend on each visit. The quirky live-in cats that wander the back hallways bolster this feeling.If you live in Alexandria, or anywhere else in Northern Virginia, I highly recommend taking your pet for treatment at Belle Haven Animal Medical Centre. Zero stars! Is not an option for this awful place. I went in yesterday for routine updates for my dogs vaccinations and instead I end with a $445. Bill and a bag full of worthless supplies.  These doctors are worst than car salesmen, trying to sell you anything without even getting consent. I have been seeing Dr. Donohue for the last year or so, she was recommended to us by one of our neighbors that also has an elderly dog. After trying out many vets in the northern VA area, I really didn't expect too much. Our dog, Molly, has lots of skin issues that we unsuccessfully treated with many different antibiotics. Dr. D took a comprehensive background and did a thorough exam (spending lots of time with us!) and prescribed a new round of antibiotics which immediately cleared up Molly's many skin issues. She even checked on us by calling to see how Molly is doing! We are now going through another set of skin issues and Dr. D has again been incredible. I called the office at 7:30am sharp this morning hoping we would be able to see her today to address the new skin issue right away. Not only did we get a same-day appointment but Dr. D called us personally right after to see how Molly is doing and suggested we send her photos of the new skin issue for her to look at to see if she can prescribe another round of meds without us having to take time off work and pay the extra fees of a doctor's visit. In summary, I really cannot recommend her enough. She is very kind and thorough and will take on your pet and its issues as if they are her own. This place has great medical care and the Dr we saw was fantastic that being said it's the most expensive facility we have ever used and the front dest is COLD slow and incentive. If it wasn't for our Dr I wouldn't go back. Wish someone there would wake up and fix things so I don't have to find somewhere else. Got an estimate to neuter our healthy 11 month doodle, $950.00. That's just way over our budget so will find somewhere else, our insurance only pays $85.00 for the procedure. Read Less

Pros: Great veterinary services!  They are very qualified and professional.  Our puppies have had that quality treatment and can't say enough amazing and wonderful things about Dr. Hood.  If this review was Dr. Hood alone, please give all 5 stars.  Cannot say enough wonderful things about her.  I remember one time, my dogs ate mushrooms that were growing in the fall in our front yard and I was in a panic b/c I didn't realize how toxic they were until I started googling everything. They were treated very quickly with the charcoal and Dr. Hood had a great attitude the entire time.  She even said "your dogs may at a little drunk" and it was too cute how they were acting afterwards- It definitely took the tension off of the fire drill that occurred earlier that day.  Another thing I really like about the vets, is that they're willing to inspect our dogs by sending them pictures/videos initially without going through the whole hoop jumping / formality of setting up an appointment, charging us for the vet visit, then telling us things like "your dog is fine".  I appreciate a veterinary service that doesn't nickle and dime.  With my previous dog being a geriatric 14 year old dog with diabetes and thyroid (had a laundry list of issues), I felt like every time I walked into a vet, I could see the dollar signs in people's eyes.  Cons: 1) Front desk is slow.  I've waited more than 20+ minutes simply to be "checked out" and when your dog is done with the appointment (depending on what it is), they're not comfortable and want to get out asap.    2) Coordination with front desk via email is very hit or miss.  Sometimes it's super easy and prompt responses.  Other times, I have to re-submit the same insurance forms (one scenario up to 3 times over the course of a month), and ask the same question but in different ways (e.g. why am I getting emails for flea/tick, when I was there 2 weeks ago and got them treated for flea/tick?)  Turns out they never administered the flea/tick, even though I handled them a series of reminders I received in the mail (this flea/tick treatment was one of them) b/c I was there on the 9th and the test was on the 12th- a little unnecessary to have your clients visit multiple times in the same month, right?  At least explain why you couldn't administer the test that day.    3) Lastly this one, I will admit I'm taking a little personally, but the way it was delivered really didn't sit well with me.  This is the experience that really wants me to give this place 1 star.  Revisiting my last experience there on the 9th... I was there to get the dogs updated with shots (no doctor's visit needed), and the bill was a couple hundred dollars.  That's fine - we have pup insurance for a reason.  I noticed the dogs were very hesitant to go in the back.  So I even walked back there with them to the door and they took over form there- so I didn't see what happened afterwards.  This is our dozenth time we've been here, though, so I didn't think anything of all this.  What was not ok occurred after... it was getting approached by a technician said that "your dog has nipping issues; it's getting worse" and recommendations to get obedience training and the push to get socialized with other humans.  First she motioned it was just one dog, but then she quickly lumped the second one in there too... just as simple as that!  How convenient... Maybe I should have spoke up and said "they have gone through PetSmart training, as well as we had Core Canine training, as well" (April is wonderful; feel free to look her up on Yelp too).  I will admit I didn't say any of this... I was simply shocked b/c I was NEVER told the FIRST time that there was nipping.  On top of that, we participate in Dog Vacay and we often go to the dog parks, so our dogs are used to be around different humans and canines... I simply couldn't fathom where this is coming from.The technician was VERY adamant that it was "our dogs fault" for about 90% of the conversation.  Then finally, she suggested to bring them by, next time I'm in the area, even just to weigh them so they don't associate this place with bad feelings (something along those lines). Anyways - I still go here b/c I know it's hard to find a good vet in the area, so I still want to come here b/c the vets are amazing (we do plan on moving either this summer or some time next spring of next year), but I encourage this place to train their staff a little better so the front desk and non-veterinary experiences (i.e. annual shots) are both a more positive and consistent experience overall. I moved to Alexandria last year and didn't think that I'd be able to find a vet that measured up to my previous one. How wrong I was. My 2 year-old kitty suddenly wasn't her bubbly, playful self and then she started having tummy problems so I knew she was ill. She wasn't eating or drinking and I could see from her behavior that time was of the essence. Fortunately, I was able to get a same-day appointment at Belle Haven (a same-day appt. is not an easy find for a "new patient" but they fit us in). They suspected that she'd ingested something she shouldn't have because her stomach seemed distended (and she does have a habit of chewing on apple iPhone chargers and the cords of cat wand toys). They ran some tests including an x-ray and low and behold, it showed what appeared to be (and was) a hair tie. This intestinal obstruction could have cost my little furry girl her life but Belle Haven acted quickly and showed tremendous compassion, not just with my kitty but on my behalf as well. I would highly recommend this vet to anyone who lives in this area! Dr. Kasprenski was able to diagnose my 3.5 year old English Bulldog with EPI and low levels of B12 after we had previously visited 2 different vets who weren't able to figure out the problem. What a relief, as her weight had dropped to a startling number.Also, they really seem to actually care about my dog! When we came in for a follow-up visit weeks later they didn't charge me for the appointment, which I really appreciated. Its refreshing to find a vet who doesn't search for ways to charge you at every opportunity.Finally, the staff at the front desk are so friendly and welcoming! We hadn't visited in several months, and one of the women behind the desk remembered Buckets immediately and came around the desk to say hi. I was really surprised she remembered my dog so well, and it made me feel like they truly do care about the animals they see.From personal experience, I would recommend skipping VCA on Duke Street and Banfield off Jefferson Davis - this place hardly charges more and the level of service and care is very apparent. Folks here are professional and so very nice. They have an orthopedic vet who does surgery on site. Our beloved 12-yo lab tore his acl and needs X-rays. He hasn't been scheduled for surgery yet but the vet who spoke with us was great. She offered some alternatives and we scheduled a day for X-rays. The waiting room is spacious enough that pets and their owners can navigate without getting in each other's space. They also offer keurig coffee and teas. Read Less

We took our cat to Belle Haven per a recommendation and we couldn't have been treated any better! Our cat is our child and from beginning to end, engagement with them was a pleasant experience. The receptionist who answered the phone to schedule our appointment was friendly. The front desk personnel (all three of them) greeted us with warm smiles and not only welcomed me, but our cat too! We were then greeted by the vet, who walked us into the exam room. The vet took copious notes on the reason for our visit, she asked discerning questions and she took the time to listen to me. Furthermore, the vet was kind and patient with our cat as she gently conducted her examination our our fur-child. As far as the price for our visit, I didn't think Belle Haven unreasonable or excessive. The way I see it, I will pay "whatever" if they treat four fur-baby as if she were their own. Read Less

Had a really bad experience my first year living in the Del Ray area with a vet and my two new puppies. Aside from them screwing up billing on multiple occasions, what I could not live with was the fact that every time I went in there, I felt like no one really liked my dogs or dogs, in general.My first phone call to Belle Haven changed everything for me.  "What are the babies names?"  They get it. These boys are part of my family.My experience of bringing them in for their first visit  was equally as satisfying.  Everything was bright and clean. The staff seemed to enjoy being there.The vet was great. She ran her hands over Frank's smooth coat and said "I love how smooth he is". We call him "Slick".  Again, they get it.They were diligent about ensuring the boys had their correct shots based on their history. Thankfully I brought copies of their records as the old vet sent the wrong data. Big shocker - not.They included nail clippings. They're thought "you're already paying enough". On that note, they are a bit more expensive than the old vet, but not much. But I trust them with my pets' care way more than the other place.  So, totally worth it. And every penny worth me not walking out disgusted as I did every time I left the old vet. Read Less

I have taken my cats here for seeral years now and seen almost all of the vets during that time. They're open on Saturdays and I have always been able to bring a cat in for urgent care when necessary. Most recently I brought my cat in for an eye issue and they ended up finding cancer (and while I'm devastated I'm glad they caught it when they did). The doctors have helped to diagnose some chronic ailments that went previously undiagnosed and greatly improved the overall quality of life of one of our cats. Dr. Doree Katz is a consummate professional in healing the physical affliction. She is also one who always makes that critical emotional connection with the scared animal and the worried humans to ease and help heal both. We are so lucky to have these vets in our area! They are unbelievably knowledgeable and caring. We have used them for years for two small dogs for routine care and major illnesses. It continues to amaze us how they know about particular ailments that are common in certain breeds or sizes of dogs, and how they save us the costs of engaging specialists in any way they can to handle as much as possible at their office, including filling prescriptions. They're also great about discussing possible alternative treatment options and costs up-front, and proceeding with a plan A, B and C to avoid aggressive expensive treatments if something else may work. I absolutely LOVE Belle Haven.  We see Dr. Donahue every time and couldn't be happier.  It's a wonderful vet and the staff is so helpful and friendly.  We live 45 min from Belle Haven since we moved however I still take my dog there.  If you need an emergency appointment they can get you in.They are a little pricier than other places (Banfield for example) however they care you get is well worth it.  The rooms and main area are so clean and don't stink like a vet. My dog has been very sick and my regular vet doesn't know what's wrong with him. They suggested I get an ultrasound but they don't have one, so they said I would have to find a vet that does ultrasound.I called a few places for pricing and everyone I called quickly gave me the price, except for Belle Haven. The receptionist at first said they don't give out prices or estimates. I asked why not and she said she doesn't know the price. I asked how they can not know the price and she said I would have to come in for an exam first and then they would give me the price. I asked if they would charge me for the exam and she said of course they would. So I asked how you can charge me for the exam without knowing the price. She said the doctor would enter the charges into the computer.I again said I don't understand how you can bill patients without knowing your prices. She said she would check with the doctor and call me back. A short while later, she called back and said that she asked the owner of the clinic, and he said they would not give me any prices because they don't reveal their prices.I'm not sure what kind of business, vet or not, doesn't give out their prices. I found the whole conversation unprofessional and disturbing and certainly would not bring my dog here and pay for an exam just to discover what their fees are. Read Less

From the moment they picked up the phone when I called for the first time I knew I was going to like this place. Extremely nice staff and doctor, they fit my cat in same day, the wait to be seeing for a scheduled appointment (even though it was a same day) was very short. I've been taking my dogs to BH for almost ten years. They usually see Dr. Kasprenski although they've seen Dr. Schutt, Dr. MacDonald, and Dr. Donohue on occasion. These doctors have always given my dogs the highest level of care. Although I know she is very busy, Dr. Kasprenski is excellent about returning my calls to talk to me about my dogs' conditions. She is very patient and compassionate. The staff is friendly and professional, and the vet techs are really kind. I used to live in Alexandria but have since moved to Woodbridge. I have tried other vets, but I've given up on finding something comparable to BH. As long as I have my pooches, they will always go to BHAMC. Read Less

I am so glad that I chose Belle Haven.  Like Charles M., my Coton is my child.  His healthcare costs more than my own and I will not take chances.  Dr. Donahue gets back to me faster than my own doctor would.  I pay high prices for office visits, sure.  A visit regarding a  rash and antibiotic treatment costed about $80.  However, I've called and left a message for Dr Donahue about various matters.  Dr. Donahue gets back to me promptly and eliminates my need for an office visit.  So the costs really evens out having that kind of access.  I'm not sure other vets would do that.  She understands  how important our animals are, and genuinely cares.  Also, the staff is awesome.  they called just to check up on him after his neuter operation.  they also do neutering by laser which is much better than the standard and worth the extra cost. This place has really gone downhill in the last 2 yrs (& their prices have actually skyrocketed during that time). We have been taking our dog here for more than 6 yrs, & spent literally thousands of dollars. The problem is the front desk staff. Until the last 2 yrs or so, many of them were knowledgeable, intelligent, competent, & kind people. Some have left; others have become vet techs. Unfortunately, BH appears to have simply hired anyone who looks nice to fill their spots. These newer employees have demonstrated a recurring inability to perform even the simplest & most fundamental tasks, like: (1) updating the system to reflect my married name rather than my maiden name; (2) updating the system to reflect our new address, which is particularly important because BH communicates the dog's medical needs, including vaccinations, via postal flyers; (3) failing to communicate any applicable prerequisites for important, expensive, day-long procedures, like dental cleanings; & (4) failing to record appointments. The final straw for us was the failure to record a long-standing dental appt I had made 2 months in advance and contemporaneously added to my calendar, & BH's lack of regard for the inconvenience it caused & failure to try to make any concessions for their error. I always make the dental appts far in advance because they are so expensive, & BH runs a price special during Feb.--thus, the appts fill quickly. When I called to make the appt, the girl couldn't locate me in the system b/c BH still hadn't updated my last name (!) But it gets worse. A few wks later, my dog became ill. I brought her to BH, and no one mentioned that she was overdue for any shots; nor had we received any flyers stating such. She got sick again that night, so we brought her back in the morning. I knew they were performing bloodwork & fecal flotations because of the illness, so I asked if they could run the annual tests on those samples. The vet said yes. I then asked if my dog was due for any other exams or shots, & to my surprise, she said my dog needed 2 new vaccinations. I mentioned that my dog had a dental appointment in just 3 wks, & the vet nodded & said: ""yes, I saw that in her file."" She said they couldn't vaccinate an anesthetized dog, though, so I asked if she could vaccinate my dog today. She said no, not while she was sick. However, b/c I'd just spent nearly $800 in two days, there was no need for me to make an appt for the vaccinations--we could do a ""run in,"" and I could wait while the vaccinations were done without scheduling an appt. She said it could be done on any healthy day except the date of the dental cleaning. Fast forward to this morning. My husband missed a meeting to drive our dog to BH for the long-awaited dental appt. They turned him away b/c they ""did not have any record of her dental appt"" (!!!) They also said they couldn't do the dental cleaning until her shots were complete (!!!!)--something the vet never mentioned. Curiously, yesterday I received a call from BH saying they ""don't have an updated mailing address"" for us. Aside from us having updated that address several times with them already, it is very interesting that they would ""just happen"" to call us the day before a dental appt that they claim did not exist. The most disturbing part is not the time wasted driving to & from BH--which is nowhere new our near home-- in rush hour traffic; nor is it the meeting missed or the hrs taken off from work to pick our dog up later. It isn't even the lost savings on the dental cleaning. Rather, it is the continued failure to reliably perform basic administrative functions &, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the utter lack of regard for 2 good customers of more than 6 yrs, as evidenced by their failure to offer us any concessions for their mistakes.
