Suburban Animal Hospital

Arlington, Virginia
General Info
The veterinarians and staff of Suburban Animal Hospital believe that veterinary medicine is not just their job but their way of life. We attend continuing education seminars every year so we can provide the most up-to-date care possible for your pet.
We love all animals and feel that without them in our lives, we would be less complete. We treat our clients like friends and their pets like our own. It isn't unusual to find one of our staff sitting in a cage rocking and cradling a sick dog, carrying on a conversation with a homesick cat, fluffing a pillow for a sleepy puppy, or carrying around a recovering surgical patient to monitor the vital signs more closely. In fact, it's just a normal day at Suburban.
With hot water heating blankets, continuous EKG heart monitors, oxygen cages, and IV fluid pumps (just to name a few); we pride ourselves on the ability to give pets the most modern and innovative nursing care while maintaining a caring and compassionate relationship with them all.

I can't rave enough about the service and care at Suburban Animal Hospital! Before coming to Suburban, I tried a handful of vets in the area, and all were either way overpriced, not only for the services rendered but the price of medications that they were charging. As a new client at Suburban, I was genuinely greeted when I entered the practice, they took me and my pups on time at my scheduled appointment time, and my veterinarian was so personable with great attention to detail. I look forward for to trying out their grooming services next time. Read Less

Suburban has been my dog's vet for nearly four years. Although I never request to see the same person each time, I've had a great experience with everyone who works there. I felt compelled to write this review because I recently took my dog in after she ate a grape lying on the sidewalk. I arrived right at closing time and saw Dr. Casper. She very graciously offered to stay overtime (along with all of the staff) to help get the grape out of my dog's system. In fact, I was on the fence about whether it was even necessary to do that. Thankfully, Dr. Casper talked me out of my poor judgment to help my dog despite the inconvenience to everyone in the office. I'm really grateful to everyone that stayed late to help me and I'm happy to have a vet that cares so strongly about the pets they work with. Read Less

I've been so impressed by the consistently expert care provided by the vets and employees of Suburban Animal Hospital! The hospital's waiting area is unusually pleasant and inviting, for both owners and pets. And the costs of treatment are consistently reasonable as well! Please bare with me as this review may be long but for very good reason. About 2 weeks ago I realized the back, upper canine molar of my 10 yr old pup was not looking so good.  My pup, Charlie, cracked this tooth a while back and it was only recently I noticed it seemed to be a problem. When I checked, it was obvious this tooth needed to come out immediately. I am new to the area so I simply Googled animal hospitals near me. I happen to live very close to Suburban, checked the reviews, and decided this place would be ok.  I made an appointment and they were able to see me very quickly.I have to mention, I am a raw feeder, that is I feed Charlie a completely raw, fresh food diet and have done so  for most of his life.  I also work in the holistic animal nutrition industry so vets tend to judge me and sometimes, in my experience, completely refuse to treat my animal.  Dr. Reardon and the techs were totally understanding and non-judgmental!  They did not question my feeding choices and made me feel very  comfortable.Charlie's surgery was scheduled for a week later. Dr. Reardon gave me an explanation for every part of the surgery, she explained the procedure, the concerns, the treatment and the recovery process.  Dr. Reardon called me twice during the surgery to update me, her techs also called to let me know how things were going.Charlie ended up having a pretty bad infection in his tooth and the surgery took longer than expected. I was aware the entire time of what was happening and that made such a difference!Dr. Reardon and team at Suburban go WAY beyond the expected.  It is so obvious and comforting that they love your pet!  They are committed to care!  It really is so amazing to find a vet staff that loves your pet just like you do!  I cannot say enough postivite things about Suburban Animal Hospital! Thank you!!! I know Charlie is always in the best hands!!!-Charlie's Mom Read Less

They really try their best to accommodate me even on short notice. The technicians I've met have been very good too. I had to bring my dog in as emergency once because he had a reaction to a bee sting and the technician came up to get my dog right away. They fit me in no problem although I could see they were very busy at the time. So far I've seen 2 different doctors and they were both so nice. They were very knowledgeable and really good at explaining things to me. I've also boarded my dog there. When the kennel assistant came up to get my dog she was so nice to him and he just loved her right away. I would definitely recommend this hospital. Read Less

I have used Surburban since 2009 for two mixed-breed rescues.  One has had multiple serious issues from puppyhood, the other has had none!   Dr Casper is my surgeon and primary vet (she saved my 2-yr old dog's life), but I've seen others on occasion.  The degree of diagnostic expertise in this practice is truly impressive (as successful as most of my own specialists and why I could never leave Surburban).  It is very expensive, but you get what you pay for.  My advice is to establish a relationship with one vet if you need care beyond the annual wellness exam.  That way you have continuity.  Rest assured, though, that any vet there is TRULY wonderful. The front desk?  A big job, and staff is really nice.  Just be prepared to stand your ground if you feel there is miscommunication.  Finally, Suburban definitely wants your business!  For example, Amelia (recently in for dental cleaning under anesthesia) was monitored just as closely as I have been for all my outpatient procedures at VHC.  AMAZING! Was really disappointed with the service we received. Our dog was scheduled for blood work today. The day prior we called to ask if we had to do any preparations and they said they would get back to us(they never did.) We called in the morning and notified them that we had still given our dog its medication at the normal time and asked if we needed to bring anything. They just said to bring the medication and the food. About an hour after dropping the dog off they called and said they weren't able to do the blood work because we didn't prep the dog. I don't understand how we can prep the dog any differently if you don't instruct us on how to! Our dog was also scheduled for grooming so they went ahead with the grooming. As someone with experience grooming I was appalled at what they gave me back. Her coat was completely uneven and I could see the lines from the blade(meaning that they weren't holding the clippers properly). Also, they used a 10 blade on her whole body! Who does that?! I could understand if she was matted but the only areas where should could have possibly been matted were her armpits. Her legs looked like someone went against the flow of the fur and then gave up half way through. They didn't even shave/strip the inside of ears! Oh and her rear was horrible. She has a docked tail so we normally let the fur on the tail grow out a bit longer to cover her butt hole but they completely shaved it off. To make things worse right below it they only shaved one side so now she has a weird tuft of fur below her butt hole that is sure to get covered in poo. Whoever said she was finished with her grooming must clearly be blind because even an average Joe could tell she looked horrible.Read Less

I was pretty sure my 4 month old puppy has tapeworms (very gross, i know) and she had finished a deworming medication over two weeks ago so i knew something wasnt right. i called the Suburban Animal Hospital and asked if i could get something for tapeworms became i am pretty sure thats whats in her stool. i was told i needed to have a stool sample dropped off so they can make sure that's what it is. I did, and I called later to ask about the results. They said the results were negative for parasites. But when i told that cant be right I can still see them in her stool, they told me they only tested for ring worm because that what she was being treated for when she was prescibed the deworming. They didn't want to acknowledge any kind of break down in communication (because i specifically asked for them to check for what looks like tapeworms) or acknowledged maybe since she wasnt ready for the once a month prevenative medication( you have to wait for a negative stool sample to start) that she might have something other than ringworm now, who knows. Also when i first got her she had fleas, which i treated and she hasn't had them since. I feel like the vet was kinda flea shaming me, saying i really should have had a flea prevention routine in place "since she has tapeworms she probably has fleas" she says to me as she is walking away. i asked her if she wanted to check my dog because I check her regularly and I am sure she does not have fleas now. The vet declined of course. I am pretty sure dogs can get tapeworms from coming in contact with other dogs poop. I didn't want anything other than a hey sorry, we will try to have better communication next time. I will probably not go back, if i do I will ask for a different vet. Read Less

Suburban was wonderful to us and our dog Xena. They helped us diagnose her condition and treated us with tremendous compassion throughout the process. Xena had cancer that had metastasized. Due to the urgent nature of her issues, we saw them 3 times in 6 days. Despite working with three different veterinarians due to last minute scheduling, they provided a consistent, clear and compassionate level of care. Suburban recommended Lap of Love for in home euthanasia. Lap of Love was as gracious and sensitive a process as I could have imagined. I know that many reviewers have had issue with Suburban. We have used them for 10 dogs across 3 of our families since 1980. Yes, they can be expensive. But they have always been up front and sensitive about the cost, identifying aggressive and minimum levels of treatment. They have allowed us to layaway money for expensive procedures. They have also always told us what they would do for their own dog - or wouldn't do. And we have never, ever felt pressured into a procedure, nor guilty for not doing one. Bottom line - we trust them. We recommend them without hesitation. Read Less

I have been using Suburban Animal Hospital for 18 years with a very positive relationship, until recently. Changes in their payment policies (which I was willing to overlook) but accompanied by delaying treatment for a dog in pain for over a week forced me to seek services elsewhere. I've been coming to this vet for 5+ years. Every so often I would have a bad experience but I overlooked it. I overlooked the long wait times, and the INCREDIBLY high prices. I couldn't overlook the most recent experience though. One of my two cats has Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). She has a flare up on average once a year and it's pretty traumatic. The most recent flare up was especially bad (suddenly peeing blood in the sink). I called the vet immediately and I was told I wouldn't be allowed to make an appointment because my name wasn't on the account (when I first started going it was to bring my parents dog, and as I got older I started bringing my two cats always under the same account without any problems). I asked to speak with my regular vet and I was told I wasn't allowed because I wasn't on the account. I had my mother call to have me added to the account and I called back. I explained the situation and asked to make an appointment. I was told I would have to wait over a week. I protested but she wouldn't budge. In light of that I asked that her if I could pick up the Rx food that breaks down the crystals (something she's been prescribed with every flare up) seeing as she couldn't see the vet for a week. I was told they wouldn't give it to me without her being examined, which they couldn't do for a week. I explained that a week from now would result in a block and possibly surgery. She literally said "that's too bad". I hung up and will never go back to that vet. I ended up going to an emergency vet that night that provided the Rx without an internal examination. She was better in two days. I've since moved my services to Caring Hands Animal Hospital and so far they have been fantastic. They also have something called a pet portal on which you can schedule appointments, track your pet's history with the vet etc. It's wonderful and not nearly as pricey. Most importantly, they care about my pet's well being. I'm very happy with the move. Read Less

My Princess suddenly decided food was not that cool, and dropped weight fast. After about 3 weeks, I took her in under the care of Dr. Kimberly Halbert. She was very caring, good with Princess (who can be really difficult, even to me). At all stages did I feel I was made aware of cost, what procedures to go through, what we should do, and referrals to other hospitals (Southpaw). I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Halbert and the staff. I was there 3 times in a week, and they really cared about Princess. They took good care of us, and I have no complaint. They did cut her claws, to help me being able to give Princess medication (fat chance, I am unsuccessful, where the doctors at SAH is capable). It cost me $15, which is on par with what I have paid at PetSmart previously. While they may charge a bit more than other places like Banfield etc, I feel welcomed by everyone, as well as cared for. I've had pets all of my life and realize that vets and veterinary service is expensive. This place takes it to a whole new level. My cat required emergency surgery. I accepted the "estimate" over the phone from the vet and authorized surgery. Two days later I was faced with a bill that was $1200 over what had been estimated though the procedure and care had not changed from the original estimation. When I confronted the head vet, Dr. Schrader (Vietnam War Veteran), he accused me of trying to avoid paying my bill and refused to remove my cat's sutures. I, too, am a Veteran and I didn't take kindly to his threats, lies and accusations. I even played a recorded voicemail from his associate vet (female), where she verbally indicated the price ($1200 less than the final price shown on the invoice) and he still told me I was a liar and refused to adjust my bill. If I didn't have a security clearance, high morals, impeccable integrity I would have knocked this guy out. I promptly paid the full bill and haven't stepped foot in this godforsaken place again. My recommendation is to avoid this business at all costs or if you do choose to conduct business here, get EVERYTHING in writing. I want to make 4 points: First, I think the front office staff has gotten much better, probably taking some reviews to heart. In the past they often seemed more interested in talking to each other than in focusing their attention on the client. But it's better now. Second, Dr. Schrader is fantastic. He can't be God, but he always takes the time to give good explanations, and offer his best counsel, with complete compassion, and obvious passion for his profession. We have always liked the associates he has hired too. Third, some of the low ratings are critical of the front office. That's important, but in no way nearly so important as the vets and techs. It doesn't seem fair to give such low ratings based on that one least important criterion--sort of like condemning a restaurant with excellent food and service because the valet parker was rude. Fourth, when we visited our sick dog in the hospital recently we saw first hand what excellent care and comfortable surroundings they were providing to him behind the scenes--regularly cleaning up an incontinent dog. Read Less
