Compassionate, caring, professional and very affordable. Our most recent experiences with this group of veterinarians and technicians will be the most memorable. We have multiple animals in and around our home. One of our oldest and most dearest cats, "Jilly" came down with what we thought was trenchmouth. In reality it turned out to be cancer. The Vets and their staff were kind, courteous, compassionate and very professional. They treated us with dignity and respect, explaining to us the serious nature of Jilly's condition, the prognosis and all the options available to us. It became increasingly clear that we were gonna have to say good bye to our oldest and dearest pet. Jilly was a member of our family and it was not an easy decision to make. Dr. Fallstrom and her staff gave us the time and support we needed to make an informed decision. Their patience and understanding of our pain helped us tremendously during this difficult time. If I could leave 0 stars I would. This vet clinic killed my cat whom I raised from a 2 week old kitten. DO NOT take your pets here. I brought my cat in on a Monday after she refused to eat over the weekend. They sent me home after doing $300 worth of tests that did nothing. After my baby continued to refuse to eat, I took her back the next Wednesday. They then looked into her mouth and realized she had swallowed a string. They offered to let me take her home and operate the next morning or send me to the vet school for her to be monitored. I chose to take her to the vet school after giving them another $150 dollars. When I arrived at the vet school they told me there was nothing they could do because Main Street hadn't faxed over their tests. So I could pay them $1000 to do more tests, or pay for $4500 surgery. Which I was told they had told Main Street to communicate with me. Which they of course did not. I finally got my cat to her normal vet in my hometown the next morning. Where I was told cats swallowing string like that is a pretty normal occurrence. I am absolutely heartbroken and disgusted. If they had done their jobs and found the string on Monday instead of worrying about lining their pockets my baby would still be alive today. Read Less

I've had a really good experience with this place. Based on previous reviews, this place has hired new front office staff who are very kind and are awesome with animals. I have also been very impressed with the doctors on staff. My dog is very anxious and wary with new people. They took their time to get my dog to trust them before the examination, and make her feel comfortable. That is something I've not seen at other places so it was refreshing. Read Less

Having gone to a few area vet clinics over the years, I finally found one to trust. Main Street Vet Clinic has been nothing but amazing for our own animals as well as our foster dog. New facility at 1514 N Main St in Blacksburg VA. Moved from another facility half block away. Obviously there is no change in quality of care provided by Dr. Halkowich and her staff. However, new and more efficiently arranged facilities do improve care for animals. Read Less

Penny Pinchers. They did an exam on my dog and didn't look at her eyes. She later developed pink eye, and after the appointment they were visibly pink. I called the next day and they were going to charge me again for an exam. I told them that I had been their the previous day and they didn't do a complete exam and they just transferred me to another person. I am switching vets. They are definitely more about the money then the love of pets.Read Less

I've been going to this vet for 4 yrs. Received outstanding service. In the back and front offices and their fees were very fair and reasonable. BUTTTTTTT, the Dr. retired. Not only did the office DOUBLE their fees but there service in the front office dropped. Once they get your pet back in the examine room for let's say a booster and a nail trim, they're throwing in a very expensive office visit (never disclosed) but nickle and diming you for taking your pets temperature and a gingervitis check. I walked out of there with a $173 bill!!! He walked in for a rabies booster and nail trim. I was appalled. I questioned the bill and all I got was double talk. Bill paid, but I will never ever be back.Oh, I need to add this... When Dr. D. Was there, his waiting room was packed and difficult to get and appt. The last two times I was there (for OVER an hour both times) not only was there no one in the waiting room, but no one came in. All I can say is be weary when looking for a vet and ask for SPECIFIC fees. This office keeps these fees up and office personnel down, I see this vet closing within a year. Dr. Halkowitz is AWESOME! I find their pricing the most affordable in town (I've had to visit the Vet School and Town and Country) and the care my dogs have received has been excellent. He makes snide and rude comments directed to me and my cat. The other vet staff are fine. I was going to change vets before my last appointment today, but did not. After today's appointment and when she has a follow-up in a few weeks, I'm not taking her here until Dr. Dallman leaves or another vet is there. I decided I wanted a leukemia immunization because my cat tries to go outside, and sometimes succeeds. He starts the appointment with "So you're getting the boot", and making snide remarks insinuating that I'm stupid to believe that my cat is not at risk of getting hit by a car or that she won't explore other yards. I finally told him my intention is to keep her inside but I want her protected in case she leaves. He lessened the remarks.Read Less

I just arrived in Blacksburg with my dog and noticed that she had worms. After being referred by one if my friends I scheduled an appointment with the clinic and explained why I was bringing my dog in. The secretary mentioned no need of brining in a stool sample or anything. I also wanted the vet to check these scabby sores that my dog has had for a couple of weeks around her eye. The vet did not check my dog's stool at all. Instead he took my word for what the worms looked like. Secondly, he scraped her scabs thinking it was a type of mange. This was a no go, so he expressed that it was necessary to send samples off to diagnose the issue. When the results came back he only said that it was chronic inflammation. Since then I have noticed she has the sores elsewhere on her body and I'm definitely going for a second opinion. I paid for a useless test that didn't reveal anything. In addition the vet didn't perform any physical examination of my dog. He didn't check her gums, lungs, skeletal system, etc. if he had done this he would have noticed other sores on her body. Dr. Dallman and his staff have been a mainstay of affordable vet care in Blacksburg for at least the past 20 years. His office does not have exactly the "Boutique" feel offered by some of the competing clinics, but affordability and quality of of the care my pets have received over the years have been second to none. If you pet requires surgery or anesthesia for a dental cleaning - North Main Small Animal Clinic is always my first choice. The have also consistently had my pet's Meds - Heart Worm, Flea & Tick and Vaccines at the most affordable prices and Yes- I have shopped around. Read Less

They were ok taking care of our cats, but not ok with our dog.  We were on vacation and our dog was boarded at a kennel.  While we were away, the kennel called to tell us our dog was uncharacteristically lethargic and they were bringing him to N. Main Clinic.  The vet called us a little while later to tell us he had run some tests and wouldn't know for sure until the results came back, but he "thought" our dog had leukemia and even went so far as to discuss the reatment options for leukemia.  Obviously, this upset us greatly and we canceled the rest of our vacation and left to drive home the next day.  About 2 hours from home, we get a call from the kennel saying that the vet called and our dog was ready for them to pick up.  Totally confused, we called N. Main to find out what was going on.  We were told that our dog was being released but the girl we spoke with didn't know why and would have someone call us "later".  Since we were so close to home, we asked the kennel not to pick him up, that we would do it in person.  When we got to N. Main, the vet tech came out to tell us that his blood work was just fine and that he probably just had a reaction to his vaccinations.  That was it.  No apology for telling us our dog had leukemia, ruining our vacation...nothing.  We now take our pets elsewhere.
