Have been taking my 17-year old cat, Babe, to Burke Veterinary Clinic since November 2017.  Babe was adopted by my parents in 2006.  My 97-year old mother could no longer care for him so Babe moved to Springfield with me from Maryland.Babe has been seen by both Dr. Alt and Dr. Monahan, both excellent Vets.  The entire staff is always very helpful and courteous.  It is easy to get an appointment within a reasonable time and once there wait times are not long.  I called once with what I thought to be an emergency at 4:30pm on a Friday and was told to come right in.  When Babe was scheduled for surgery with an Ophthalmologist he needed an antibiotic injection.  Burke fit us in so the med would have time to take effect a few days before the surgery.  Dr. Monahan even called a few days after his surgery to see how he was doing.Babe has been taking meds for a liver condition since about 2013 and needed to delay his rabies and distemper injections.  Dr. Monahan emailed waivers to a groomer.  As Babe is also an indoor cat and 17 years old Dr. Monahan said the vaccines are not as important as they would be for an outdoor cat.Dr. Monahan also prescribed a pain medication for Babe on our first visit for his arthritis and was very understanding and patient with me as I called with concerns over his initial reaction to the med.  Both Dr. Alt and Dr. Monahan have been very supportive in trying his medications in different forms.  After a few years of chewables for 2 liver meds and some months of a chewable pain med, Babe started to refuse them.  We switched to liquid meds which he readily accepted in certain foods for some months, then started refusing any foods with liquid meds.  Trying to get 3 liquid meds into his mouth with syringes would be too much for both Babe and me.  I am giving him the pain med once or twice a day by mouth, which can be a real struggle at times.  We have now switched to ear gel for the 2 liver meds which requires his ears be cleaned regularly, some of which I can do at home. A real plus for us is Burke Vet Clinic is only a 5-minute drive from my house, a 12-minute walk if necessary, so Babe does not need to spend a lot of time in the car getting there.  Once in with the Vet we are usually out within 1/2 hour or so but never feel rushed, it's just all the time needed for that visit.  I highly recommend both Dr. Alt and Dr. Monahan at Burke Vet Clinic. I've been seeing Dr. Alt for many years now and he is simply the best. He is very knowledgable and never tries to push anything unnecessary that your pets won't need. My one cat had kidney failure (rest in peace my sweet boy!) and Dr. Alt was very realistic informing us about different treatment options. Apart from the routine checkup, he also have performed a tooth extraction and cleaning for my other cat (always scary when pets go under anesthesia) and everything went smoothly. You're in good hands with Dr. Alt!The office staff is always friendly and helpful over the phone. I couldn't get my cat out from under the bed one time and had to reschedule my appointment last minute and they were very accommodating. They also give you a follow up call the next day just to see if your pet is doing okay, which i think is very thoughtful. Also, they send out very cute reminder postcards when your pet is due for their routine checkups/shots! Read Less

I bring my two cats here and love the place. I usually see Dr. Alt but I've seen other staff members and have absolutely no complaints. While I usually come for routine visits, one of my cats recently had some health problems. Dr. Alt carefully and clearly explained my options including the cost and benefits of the different choices. Happy to say my cat is doing fine with the help of some medication. When the local pharmacy wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars for the prescription, Burke Veterinary Clinic was happy to fill it for me for a much more reasonable price. We recently switch to this vet for our puppy because I had heard good things. It's a small quaint shop that has clearly withheld the test of time. The staff is attentive and well spoken over the phone and in person. We have seen two different vets so far and they were both personable and listened to our advice on how to handle our deaf puppy. She needs a little extra focus before you start to examine her, but I was very impressed that they took the time to learn how she prefers to be approached instead of just assuming they were the experts. The staff and all the vets - especially Dr. Alt - are amazing at Burke Vet Clinic! I have been taking my 2 dogs and cat there for over 10 years. It is the one place - besides PetSmart - where my dogs actually pull me TOWARDS the door :-) The staff is friendly and professional, dedicating time to every person and pet that walks through the door, answering any questions that the people have, making the pets feel comfortable and never making me feel rushed or like any of my pet parent questions are silly. The vets are patient and talk to you about options for caring for your pets, not immediately jumping to medications or drugs. If your pet is sick, they explain what is going on, what the different paths for treatment are, the pros/cons for each and recommend how to proceed. Additionally, after every visit someone from the office calls me the next day to check up on my pet, making sure they aren't having any reactions to any vaccines, verifying I didn't think of any new questions and just being personable. It takes so much weight off my shoulders to know that my vet and his staff care about my pets just as much as I do. Additionally, since Yelp doesn't allow you to 'fact check' another person's review, I saw a negative comment that I'd like to provide some clarifying information for as I was there in the office for the entire exchange and witnessed it first-hand. This is simply to ensure pet parents searching for a responsible vet have all relevant information when choosing a clinic. This is in regards to Tracy I.'s post from 6/16/2017. I have tried to keep my personal opinions out of this and just recapped the facts of the exchange:I was at the office when this individual arrived, 15 minutes late for her appointment (which she admitted to and I overheard). She was already flustered when arriving and became belligerent (yelling and cursing at the staff) when she was told that the vet had moved on to their next appointment. She demanded that she still be seen because her dog needed his rabies vaccine. She indicated that it was not her fault she was late, that she took the wrong exit getting to the vet, and it wasn't fair that the vet moved on to the next appointment. After yelling at the two vet techs sitting at the front desk, who were still helping other customers while very patiently telling this upset woman that they would be right with her, a third vet tech pulled her aside to offer to reschedule her appointment for another day, explaining that the rest of the appointments for today were full. Tracy I. then yelled at the third vet tech, saying again that it was not her fault and she shouldn't be penalized for being late. She also implied that the office shouldn't book all of their appointments for the day and instead should leave open time in the schedule in the event of patient tardiness. The third vet tech apologized that she was inconvenienced by the vet moving on to the next scheduled appointment and asked if she would like to reschedule. Tracy I. indicated that she was not interested in rescheduling, she would finding a new vet and stormed out. A few minutes later, she returned slightly calmer and asked if the vet could just give her dog his rabies vaccine. The third vet tech who had been speaking with her went to the back to confirm with the vet, then said that they would be happy to do that for her; however, she would have to wait until the vet was done with the patients who had arrived on time for their appointments. At this point, Tracy I. sat down in the waiting area and I was called in to the vet's office for my appointment. This entire exchange lasted less than 10 minutes. It was incredibly difficult for me to hold my tongue while the vet techs were being verbally abused by this woman. I would also like to point out that, during this exchange, two small children were sitting 10 feet away watching Zootopia while they waited for their mother to finish checking out. As I stated at the beginning of this, I simply want to ensure that an objective account of the facts was listed, especially since this person took the time to write a negative review. The staff at Burke Vet Clinic never once lost their professionalism while being yelled and cursed at. They continued to smile, offer suggestions for resolving the problem and, in my opinion, went above and beyond to help a customer who really didn't deserve the customer service. Being an outside observer, this situation was incredibly uncomfortable, but I want to praise the staff for handling it better than I could have and further solidifying my opinion that Burke Vet Clinic is a wonderful place. Everything in response to my comment is false or misleading:1. I did not say it was the vet's fault I was late. That would be ridiculous. I distinctly said I missed my exit and had to get turned around, which was why I was late and apologized.    Side note: didn't realize my appointment was only 20 minutes. Had the person told me when scheduling, I would have asked whether that was enough time for blood work, multiple vaccines, and a physical for a dog with multiple chronic health issues. But hey, this just helps prove my point of an overbooked schedule.2. No one offered for me to stay for the next appointment (which I asked if I could and would have accepted) only that I would have to reschedule because they were completely full. They also had taken the next appointment in before my appointment slot was even over. So there must be some overlap in your appointments (more hints of an overbooked schedule)3. I didn't come in the wrong day for a previous appointment, the office assistant scheduled it for the wrong day and/or told me the wrong day that she had put me in the calendar.4. When my dog developed kennel cough after seeing the groomer, she developed kennel cough literally the day after she went to the groomer. Do the symptoms of kennel cough appear within 12 hours of exposure? Or is it more likely they develop within 3 days of going to the vet?I'm honestly surprised to even get a response to my review. Normally a business would just say something about we apologise if there was any inconvenience and we strive to do the best we can, blah blah blah. I know you're not required to be HIPAA compliant or anything, but Dr. Alt, taking a defensive posture by discussing a client's history in an online forum just seems....unethical?Take this however you want. But with the response from Burke to my review, I have no doubt that I made the right decision to find another veterinary clinic. So for that, thank you. They have made repeated mistakes scheduling appointments and clearly overbook their schedules. If you show up for an appointment on time, you wait 20-30 minutes to be seen, but when you're 10 minutes late, they make you reschedule. They scheduled my appointment for the wrong day to get my dog's kennel cough vaccine. When I showed up they wouldn't see me and made me come back a week later. When we came back, the waiting room (which is very small) was full of dogs (obviously because they overbooked) and my dog ended up getting kennel cough!!Nothing wrong with the vets, but getting to actually see the vet is necessary for me to take into account their quality. They didn't used to have these problems. Been going there 10 years, so they must have had a change in office manager.Bottom line, if you want to go to a veterinary clinic that values your pet's well being and your time over profits by trying to pack in as many appointments as possible, Burke Veterinary clinic is not for you. Overall, the process was very welcoming and a relief of anything troublesome as our cat is just overweight and had full anal glands. We will return for sure! Read Less

I have been bringing my dog to Burke Veterinary Clinic since 2015, and our experience has been great.  The staff is friendly and responsive.  Their records are easy to understand and digitized.  They call you with results very quickly and follow up with you after emergency vet visits at other veterinary locations.  We have had no complaints, but all of our visits and interactions had been routine and did not require any explanation or in depth conversations...until recently.Dr. Alt and his staff were advising me that a specific examination was necessary for our treatment plan.  However, when I made it clear that I did not agree, nor wanted the suggested examination for my dog, the problems began.  Dr. Alt and his staff refused to proceed with the treatment plan unless I submitted to the examination.  I asked Dr. Alt and his staff multiple times why the exam was medically necessary, but all they would tell me is that it was required by state law.  I asked Dr. Alt to please explain why it was medically necessary (i.e. why it was so medically important that they had to put it into law), but Dr. Alt was unwilling to provide any medical explanation other than, "it is what the law requires."  I also asked Dr. Alt what findings the "medically necessary exam" could possibly reveal that might impact the treatment plan in any way.  Again, Dr. Alt was either unwilling or unable to provide a single possible scenario where he could discover something from the examination that would impact the treatment plan.  Dr. Alt also refused to provide me with basic information about a prescription medication for my dog that my dog has been taking for years and must continue to take.  I simply asked him to provide the contraindications (specific situations in which a drug, procedure, or surgery should not be used because it may be harmful to the patient), but Dr. Alt refused to provide a single one, or take them time to look them up and get back to me.  When I looked up the state law to which Dr. Alt and his staff had been referring, I found that the examination they were requiring was in fact not required by state law.  I presented Dr. Alt with the exact language (verbatim) from the Virginia state code he had referenced, but he refused to acknowledge the discrepancy.Additionally, every other veterinarian I contacted in the area confirmed that Dr. Alt was incorrect and that the examination was not required by law, nor medically necessary.  Fortunately, I was able to proceed with the treatment plan without Dr. Alt's "mandatory examination," using another veterinarian, saving both my dog stress as well as me time and money (which appears to have been Dr. Alt's primary motivation when pushing the unnecessary examination).  I simply cannot trust my dog to veterinarian who is unwilling and/or unable to explain why something is "medically necessary" and/or "required by law," or detail how and when a drug should be avoided.  Being able to clearly articulate such things to an owner when asked, or when the owner presents conflicting information is vital to the trust I place in my dog's vet. I'll preface this by saying that Dr. Alt - who has seen one of my cats - is a good veterinarian.  I have been pleased in the past with his professionalism and ability.  If you're not in a rare emergency situation, go ahead to BVC.However, if you're in dire straits, go somewhere else.  While I understand that this is a business, and that doctors set policies for a reason, the last visit I had with BVC turned me off forever. My cat was acting listless:  wouldn't eat, hardly drank water, pale gums, very much unlike his normal rowdy behavior.  He occasionally tries to eat leftovers before we get them put away, and I was concerned that he might have eaten something with allium (garlic, onion, shallot) in it, which is toxic to cats and causes anemia.I made an appointment with BVC, and when I got there, I explained right away that we were unable to pay for services for a few days due to a recent financial emergency.  If this had occurred at literally any other time, it would not have been an issue, but misfortune occurs in clusters.  I assured them that I could make payment in full by the end of the week.  I was an existing client, not some random person off the street, and was willing to give them whatever financial information they required in order to be secure in my ability to pay.  They informed me that I would have to pay half that day.  I asked for a ballpark estimate of what that might be, and they refused to give me one, saying that an office visit was $82 (fine, OK), but that it might be "a lot more" if tests had to be done (which, as I was worried about anemia, I assumed they would be).  I said, very honestly, that I couldn't promise to be able to pay 50% that day if I didn't know what the rough amount might be.They said I would have to bring back the cat when I was able to pay, and offered to make an appointment for that time.  I asked if he would survive a few more days if he really had eaten allium; they said they didn't know, and sent me off with a "good luck."I couldn't believe that a veterinarian's office would turn aside an animal with a possibly serious condition over a 72-hour delay in payment.  As I said, it's a business, but it's also a medical provider for animals.I found another vet who was willing to examine and treat my cat, thankfully.  They put a possibly poisoned animal's health first, and trusted that I would make good on my promise to pay. From this, I learned one thing:  Burke Veterinary Clinic has a very specific price tag on whether your pet lives or dies in an emergency situation, so make sure your pet never gets sick at a financially inopportune time (or, if they do, take them somewhere else). Thanks for the stress and tears.  I know where I'm taking my business from now on. A fellow Yelper did such an amazing review of this clinic that I had to check it out for myself. :-)My cat has IBD and as our vet is a bit far way for another few weeks, I needed a local vet to look at why she's recently flaring. From the initial phone call to the through visit with the friendly and compassionate Dr. Wilson, to the follow-up call yesterday from Dr. Alt, I couldn't have asked for better service and care. Our pets are our "fur babies," so giving them the best possible care is key. I can understand why they've been named one of the best vets in Washingtonian Magazine. Read Less

We've been clients of Burke Vet for over 6 years and they have been excellent with our dogs and cat. We have a Labrador that routinely eats stuff she shouldn't and has gi challenges. Dr. Alt and Dr. Wilson do an awesome job of recommending practical treatment like a bland diet and probiotics, and the issues have always resolved. Our elderly cat also had a very painful problem with his eyelids and chronically scratched corneas a few years ago. They pointed us to an excellent veterinary eye specialist in Fairfax, and the cat is now 100 percent better and enjoying his golden years. Read Less

We all know the type: spends outrageous amounts of money on holistic dog food, obsessed with her pets, spoils them more than most people spoil their actual progeny, perhaps she even refers to them, upon occasion, as her "fur children" -- you know, the crazy dog lady type. And we all know that I am totally, thoroughly, 100% one of those types. So sue me, I love my dogs! Harry and Daxter are the miniature schnauzer counterpoints to my very soul, and I tell them so (maybe not in as many words) every day. And so for the longest time, I thought that the ridiculous bills I was racking up from my previous vet's office meant that I was paying for the best of care for them. Until, of course, I stopped thinking that. And instead started thinking about how maybe it doesn't have to be that expensive.I mean, c'mon. When the pet insurance wellness plan that I get for them (which, to be fair, is something that ALL pet owners really should consider getting, not just us crazy ones) doesn't even cover the entirety of their standard, annual checkups, something's gotta be amiss, right? Enter my search for a new vet to take care of my precious pups, and enter the Burke Veterinary Clinic.I seriously feel like I've won the jackpot. Never before in my life as an obsessive, neurotic dog owner have I ever felt more at ease at the vet's office. From Shelley, who booked my next-day appointment and checked me in (and who proactively informed me of a $10 off new client form they have on their website!), to Dr. Alt himself, officially the Greatest Vet in the World (TM), I had a 5-star experience the entire way around.First up, let's talk about Dr. Alt's bedside manner. What a nice guy! He seems like he's still relatively young, so maybe he's just not as jaded from dealing with both negligent pet owners and people like me for so long. Regardless, he seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting my boys, handling them with so much care it made my heart swell. He let them sniff and inspect every instrument he used on them, from the ear speculum thing to the eye flashlight thing (I'm pretty sure these are the technical terms), and even my constantly frightened, crybaby Daxter didn't make a peep when he got his booster shot.Dr. Alt was equally nice and caring when dealing with me. Never once did he try to upsell me on a shot, procedure, medicine, or the like. In fact, unlike the majority of my past vet experiences, he proactively informed me of whether certain shots and procedures were even necessary (they are SO honest about what is and isn't!), and let me make the decision on whether I wanted to move forward! He really seemed to understand that, while obviously I'd pay thousands of dollars for my pets' health if the situation demanded it (and it has, and I have!), I prefer not to have to break the bank on a routine basis. Dr. Alt didn't even bat an eye that the flea/heartworm preventative that I was asking about wasn't one that they had in stock. He simply said I could order it online -- something that A) I probably would have done anyway, but B) no vet has EVER suggested, since normally they'd "recommend" me switching to something they DO carry so that I could buy it right then and there. It was just so... refreshing. Honestly, it caught me a little off guard! And when it came time to pay the bill, even for two dogs it seemed really reasonable (especially for this area, and especially in comparison to the exorbitant amounts that I've paid in the past). PLUS, they even filed my pet insurance claims FOR me!I honestly cannot stress enough how great my first experience at Burke Veterinary Clinic was. Harry, Daxter, and I all feel thoroughly taken care of, and while I obviously don't hope to have to go back to the vet on more than an annual basis, I know that the next time I walk through those doors I will have nothing to dread. Your pets deserve personal service and compassion as much as you do! I hate to begin a review with such a cheesy slogan, but I wanted to catch your attention in case the five stars aren't enough. We've tried a few veterinary clinics in the area, and as far as I'm concerned we've found THE veterinary office for Lu, my handsome, senior bich-poo. Fifteen and not-as-strong, he needs the tender loving care more than ever now, and while I love him so dearly and spend hundreds and even thousands on him like it's nothing, it's good to know my money is well-spent.From my multiple visits to the office, I can honestly say that not one single aspect of these experiences has been unsatisfactory. Exemplary service starts when you call to make an appointment and continues way after your friend's visit is over. The front-desk staff are patient and personable. They are detailed whether scheduling appointments or providing discharge instructions.Burke Veterinary clinic staff are wonderful about following up. From rescheduling appointments to seeing how Lu is responding to treatment, they call promptly and are always a pleasure to deal with. Over the course of the year, Lu has seen three vets, but most often, he sees Dr. Wilson. She's amazing! Lu seems to know exactly what's going to happen once he walks into the vet's office, but Dr. Wilson always knows how to put him at ease, stooping down to pet him/play with him so he feels more comfortable. She is very gentle and reassuring throughout the exams. What I also love about her is that she really takes the time to understand him-his environment, his temperament, his health concerns, etc. She doesn't just take one look at him and hone in on the symptom that would require the most expensive treatments. She also provided me with a few treatment/exam options so that I could do as my budget and time allowed instead of mandating only one treatment plan. As I mentioned earlier, pet medical expenses can be quite damaging to the wallet, and you have no way to avoid it unless you can ignore your friend's discomfort. However, this veterinary clinic is pretty affordable compared to other veterinary offices in the area, and they don't push for lab tests unless they feel it's really necessary. For many years, I unwisely went to a vet whose staff would always try to get a urine sample or bloodwork done to fatten their own wallets. No more of that! For respectful and caring medical service for your beloved companion at an affordable price, in a relaxing and clean environment, look no further than Burke Veterinary Clinic. This probably seems like a paid ad. However, let me assure you, not only am I not getting paid to say all this, I'm paying to take my dog here and happy enough at the end of the day to write a stellar review. Burke Veterinary Clinic deserves it. Read Less

We took our 11 year old cat here for the first time yesterday. Since our cat was an indoor cat, we never considered getting her vaccinated but when she started to gain weight too fast and lose hair, we decided it was time to get her checked out. The receptionist was very nice and informative . I was worried that because my cat hasn't been seen in years, I would be overwhelmed with vaccines and medicine, but the doctor didn't pressure me at all into getting what wasn't need for our cat. He thoroughly looked our cat over and answered any questions that I had. The atmosphere of this clinic is extremely friendly too. Since our cat hasn't been seen in a long time, she was pretty scared when we arrived and even had an accident on herself - while embarrassing, the staff helped reassure me that it was normal for new comers and helped me clean her up.

Didn't ask for excessive diagnostics or testing even though I told them I was more than willing to pay for any diagnostics the doctor might want...and were still spot on diagnostically. Calm and controlled environment. Lots of staff for a small office and they're all great. I moved several times throughout Northern Virginia but I still kept coming back here despite the drive. Now I've moved out of state and am very sad to have to find a new vet. Reasonable prices and great hours too. My dogs were only ever seen by Dr. Alt but because I like continuity of care and staff was very accommodating of making that happen for me. Read Less
