I have been taking my dog to this Banfield location ever since I got her 5 years ago. I have been paying monthly for her wellness plan and even upgraded to include dental. I have unsuccessfully tried to schedule a follow up appointment for her, on recommendation from the vet at the Cove emergency hospital.  My dog has been diagnosed with myelopathy (paralysis) and thus can not empty her bladder which has caused a bad UTI. All of this happened in a matter of days, no symptoms before it just struck out of nowhere.  My dog is going to need refills on her meds but Banfield keeps telling me to take her to the Cove or to Blue Pearl. I have spent $800 in one week on two visits to the Cove because they won't see her. I pay for services every month and can't get seen. They only schedule for vaccines and routine treatment but for other things like "unlimited" office visits it's like pulling teeth to get seen. It's a shame because now, she is not eligible for any actual pet insurance. If I had known we would get this type of treatment,  I would have insured her vs. signing up for the b.s. wellness plan. At least with insurance I can take her anywhere and get seen immediately. Read Less

I gave 3 stars because I find the doctors to be great but the office staff have caused problems for me. My husband & I have both found Drs Lewis & Robinson to be capable & pleasant while going above & beyond at times to help us & our dog. I can remember a time recently as well when we were able to call on a Friday & make an emergency drop-off appointment for that Saturday. The office staff for the most part have been friendly & helpful. I can however recall two incidents which have escalated to Banfield's Client Advocacy team. The first involved me being on hold for 10-15 mins & the call dropping. I called back & when they asked to put me on hold again, I explained what happened. I said I understand you have a client at the counter & i already waited as long as I had but I think, considering the circumstances, you could quickly take my call. They did not, in fact I BELIEVE I was hung up on (I'm not sure if I remember correctly). The second was when they called to confirm my appointment & told me that if I didn't call back, my appointment may be cancelled. I've never been issued such an ultimatum from any other doctor & I find it unacceptable for two reasons: 1. In over a year I've never been late for or missed an appointment, it's unfair & disrespectful to act like that towards me. 2. They didn't know that I had to arrange transportation because my car was broken. What if I'd not gotten the message & shown up to find my appointment cancelled? I understand time is money but I think it's poor customer service to treat customers like that when they're in great standing. Read Less

They moved the scale to where dog has to go into three-sided box and now and you can't read the scale, someone behind counter has to read it. I have two complaints, one my dog did not like to step up to be boxed in, it was scary for him, two not being able to read scale. So, obviously Banfield doesn't want you using scale on your own, I can kinda understand that the way people abuse things, although I don't like it, that's not the big problem. The way it's situated making it scary to a shy dog stinks, whomever came up with this idea does not know much about dogs and shouldn't be making these kinds of changes without a little research. Feb 9 2017: My critter just returned from her comprehensive checkup, stem to stern. Yeah she gained 1/2 pound in the last 6 months, and had one other common pet problem. The professionalism (and kindness) of the entire staff was 100 % obvious: Mega was clean and calm. I had opted for the monthly plan and saved a tidy sum on her bloodwork, shots, treatments, any salves or meds, etc. Dr Lewis even included some samples of food to help Mega drop some weight. We lost our other critter 6 months ago... Before leaving, I picked up some supplies and a toy at the Petsmart, wherein Banfield Pet Hospitals are located - brilliant idea. Mega's health care needs were - as always - effectively addressed without incident. I think she's starting to LIKE these visits. What better testament to the great veterinarians at Ches. Sq. location could there be ? This morning, their staff called to follow up on Mega ( sleeping contentedly on a clean pet bed at my feet). She actually woke up to "greet' the staff for a moment, who replied "Hi Mega." As I said, our other critter passed almost 6 months ago, and that's where I took him too -the same Banfield in Chesapeake Square. He was almost 17. He also received the same, exceptional professional attention that seems to be their standard of care. Whether the outcome of professional pet health care is routine, or even when it's their final journey, I am most deeply gratified and grateful to find the highest caliber of veterinary services is here, in the Chesapeake Square Mall ! I hate writing negative reviews but I feel obligated to share my less than satisfying experience.I decided to ignore the already poor reviews posted here and took my new puppy here for her first check-up. Walking in the door I was greeted by a young man working at the counter who was clearly not thrilled to be working. He was not rude, however he was not friendly, welcoming or happy to answer any of my questions. Being hopeful, I stayed for my appointment. The nurse that was assigned to our room was not helpful, professional or knowledgable about dogs, what-so-ever. She actually tried to tell me that the very popular heartworm medication my dog is on, is only for fleas! The vet and I both corrected her. This was after she tried three times to convince me to get my puppy's booster shots early, after telling her that I take her somewhere else for her shots and she has an appointment there next week on the date her shots are due. She also questioned me several times on not signing up for their "Wellness insurance plan." The vet was no better. She half-way answered my questions and was not enthusiastic about my dog or informing me on how to care for my new puppy. The only thing I got out of this visit was learning my puppy's weight at check in. All in all, I will be looking for a new vet. I got as far as the initial reception desk. They couldn't find my puppy's name and our plan that was purchased but we had yet used.2 young girls were doing the reception and couldn't be less helpful if there was moss growing on them. My purpose was asking a ballpark figure on the cost of spaying my puppy (gave relevant info, age weight, shots). They could not give a price, because they needed info, (?) I asked what they needed to know, AGE, WEIGHT,SHOTS!! I answered again, then they say they can't tell me because...because....because.. I ask if I can even get a ballpark like $5000, they say no, I have to consult with a vet!!! Maddening. Screw it,  Nansemond Vet, SPCA, and numerous others gave me info over the phone, no prob.As far as friendliness the one of the two girls was doing her nails the whole time, the other was trying to rush me out, not even offering the consult until I asked what I needed to get a price! If they're this poor at this low level, there's no way in Haiti they are entrusted with my dogs! I'd rather not recount my entire horror story that I had at Banfield with my new puppy, so I will just highlight the overall experience. The reason people get roped into coming to banfield is because they are able to keep costs so low but with that, you have some extremely inexperienced vets and vet techs conducting some serious surgeries on your precious pets. Is that worth it to you? With my second puppy, I opted to enroll her at Banfield because the first puppy had some very costly (to be expected) initial vet bills, with all the booster shots they have to get in the first year. Overall, what a grave mistake doing this was, banfield vets are no more than generalists who misdiagnose all the time and don't have the real knowledge or experience to give you educated information. In my case, they hemmed and hawed about getting my puppy spayed 3 different times (yet it is only covered once so I had to pay for each additional blood work) and they tried to say she had a liver shunt, which she absolutely did not. Bottom line, I had to pay to go to a specialist and conduct all this extra lab work just to find out NOTHING WAS WRONG and the vet kept refusing to do the spay. We were also lied to by the Chief of Staff at the VB location (oh did I mention they required her to spay at a totally different location and when we got there, they had no idea this would happen?) of our puppy's diagnosis. Just a mess. The local branches don't communicate with corporate, the vets are not experienced and act more like nurses not real doctors, and in the end, I would have just paid the extra money to save the stress, headache, and added expenses that probably equaled about the same as going to a traditional vet. I can't imagine a scenario in which banfield would be appropriate for dogs or cats at any age. When they're young they need spayed/nuetered (which I would never do at Banfield) and when they're old they need more personalized, specialized care, which banfield does not do. Save yourself and your pet. Good grief! Read Less

I started taking my dog to Banfield when we adopted her a few years ago.  She's a beagle and very friendly.  The staff is always friendly and professional.  They always call and send reminders of upcoming check-ups.  We have adopted a new pet.  She will be definitely visiting Banfield.  I read some of the other reviews.  They were disturbing.  I checked the dates and those reviews were made a few years ago, before we began using Banfield.  Maybe they retrained or hired new staff.  I am not quite sure but I am thankful I have not had such bad experiences from them. No, no, no! Read Less

Good grief! Read Less
