First the good...everyone at this clinic is SUPER friendly and I believe they really care about my pets. Appointments are easy to get same or next day.Now the horrendous...over the course of three weeks, I paid close to $900 for two dogs for annual care (exam, shots, fecal, heartworm test). I find their prices to be outrageous and they have a habit of double charging for services. What they forget, when they explain away the "reasons" for certain charges, is that their clients could also be medical professionals. As a nurse practitioner, I know they have to pay for needle disposal. I also know that there is no reason to charge $6.50 per pet for one needle to be disposed of. That's probably 10x what they paid for the needle and disposal all together. So I just paid $13.00 for them to dispose of two needles. Then, they charged $24 per pet for a "tech appointment" to get a vaccine booster. On top of that, they charged another $24 for anal sac expression. It took the tech about 4 minutes to give a shot and express anal sacs. I'll be contacting the business office and the better business bureau and promptly moving my pets to somewhere that's not trying to take advantage of pet parents! Read Less

Let me start this off , I did not go to vet school so the care should be trusted on the vet. I use to be a long time customer with all the pets with animal hospital. HOWEVER, one of my cats begin to show unusual signs having trouble with his bowels and urine track. After doing nothing but a physical exam and a urinalysis. It was recommended to take him to the specialist at Blue Pearl. We followed the directions of the specialist. We never received a follow up call from Chesapeake animal hospital. Few weeks later I had to take my cat to different vet and immediately she knew there was a problem with his urinary tract. She went the extra mile and did an x-ray and seen that he had multiple crystals which prevented him from urinating. We tried to fix the problem but by this time it was to late. If Chesapeake Animal would have thought to look at the notes from blue pearl and paid attention just maybe there could have been a different out come. I short I believe there is a lack of knowledgable veterinarians. You are supposed to relay on them for the care of your animals. I mean that is their job. Read Less

I brought in my dog to receive a partial trim/hygiene, nail clipping, etc. from its grooming department.  My dog can become a little anxious at the Vet and/or groomer and decided to sedate her so she was a little more cooperative but was turned away when I explained that I had given her a sedative.  She's not seen at this animal hospital but didn't know this was an issue, especially since the grooming dept is part of the animal hospital -if there were a problem, she'd be cared for if necessary (Vets on duty). Anyway, the groomer was a little short with me but quickly realized she was in the process of grooming another dog, greeting me at the door and answering calls -clearly understaffed.  What really surprised me, and made me actually appreciate it later as I thought more about it, was she left a small dog unattended on the grooming table leashed at the collar.  Had that dog decided to leap to escape, it would have hurt or hung itself.  I'm thankful I didn't end up using their services after all.  I can only imagine what takes place when not there. Our cats have been seeing Dr. Neering at Chesapeake Animal Hospital since 1999 and we wouldn't go anywhere else! We moved to Hampton several years ago, tried several hospitals on the Peninsula, and still end up driving the 45 minutes to Chesapeake with all of our cats. The care and compassion they have for our "girls" is wonderful. As for Dr. Neering, she is a life saver. She is empathetic, direct, compassionate and smart. We had a critically ill cat several years ago; she did research and suggested an aggressive therapy. The support she provided in person and by phone was incredible. We wouldn't have made it through it all without her. Our girl recovered (against all odds) and we had 3 more happy years. And that's just one cat. All the others have received equally excellent care. I highly recommend Dr. Neering and the entire Chesapeake Animal Hospital team -- Dr. Kim, Dr. Brooks, the techs and the rest of the staff. They are top notch in our book! Read Less

When my husband and I had to face the terrible, hard decision to put our sweet old Boxer, Rocky to sleep we already knew where to go. 6 months prior he had stomach issues causing a blockage and he was throwing up/not eating for 5 days straight. We found Chesapeake Animal Hospital to take him to, and they gave us 6 more awesome months with this most faithful & perfect poster dog before old age just got a hold of him for good. I brought my box of tissues and a comfortable blanket for him to lay on on the floor at the hospital, but upon arriving for our appointment CAH already had both provided for us in the room they had ready for us so we didn't have to wait in the waiting room, another concern of mine because I was already a crying snotty mess. The entire staff seemed to be mourning with us and couldn't have made it a more peaceful process. Thank you Chesapeake Animal Hospital staff and Dr. Neering for your expertise and all of your incredibly kind hearts. You made an EXTREMLY painful process much easier. God bless all of you.Read Less

As a new resident to the area, I am most thankful that I found CAH. The staff and the doctors are second to none. I adopted a rescue dog just prior to moving to Chesapeake. Unfortunately upon our first visit we learned he had a issue that needed immediate attention. Dr. Kim was amazing. He took time to explain everything to me, the different treatment options, and the best approach to treat the disease. He even ran out to the parking lot one evening to catch me before I drove off, so he could reassure me everything would be ok. Today my pet is in excellent health, and the doctors and staff at CAH are our second family. This is the absolute best place you can take your family pet!! Hands down the BEST vets I have ever dealt with. Dr. Kim was our vet on most occasions, but we also saw Dr. Neering. Both are very professional, honest, and caring! We have a beagle had back problems. After they did x-rays to show he had degenerative disc disorder they said he would eventually need surgery. The first 2 years he had problems, they did x-rays to determine the cause. The next few years they knew what the problem was, and didn't feel the need to spend a bunch of money on x-rays. However, instead of surgery they treated him with pain meds, steroids, and prescribed lots of TLC. After 5 years of this, our dog seemed to injure himself every spring, he had reached his limit. We took him to see Dr. Kim and they didn't charge us for the visit, he referred us to an orthopedic surgeon, and our pooch was taken care of. We have recently moved from VA to KS, and we are searching for our "Dr. Kim" here. I would HIGHLY recommend Chesapeake Animal Hospital. They aren't the cheapest around, but I believe you pay for what you get. Read Less

I've taken my cats here several times for small problems, urinary issues and vaccinations. I took both of them in last week to get their annual vaccines and physical exams and told the tech. that I had an upcoming vacation and that I would be boarding them and to give them any vaccines that she advised. When I asked her several times if it was recommended that they receive the feline leukemia vaccine, she said she would advise against it since I trusted her opinion as a professional, I did not get that particular vaccine. Low and behold, the most cost efficient boarder I could find requires that vaccine. I called Chesapeake Animal Hospital to make an appointment for the leukemia vaccine and I told them I was a tad discouraged that I had to pay another office visit when it was recommended that I didn't need the vaccine. I asked the office visit could be waived since my 2 cats were seen just last week and they said no. The technician then got on the phone and yelled at me. I told her that she was extremely rude and that was no way to speak to a customer. I immediately hung up and called another vet's office, I explained my situation and they waived the office fee for me... even though they didn't do anything wrong. It really pays to listen to a customers needs and genuinely care about them and their pets. So if you'd like to get belittled over the phone by a measly veterinarian technician and pay more for services that aren't recommended, I'd totally advise you to go to this place. Read Less

In response to the posting by kathypq, it would appear that there has been a miscommunication in the cost of spaying a toy poodle. The cost for such a surgery on a young, healthy dog (including optional preoperative lab work and post-surgical pain medications) should be between $300 and $325. The quote of $700 - $900 is a far cry from our normal fees. Perhaps there were other procedures that were to be performed at the same time? We apologize if you were quoted incorrectly. As far as why the SPCA can offer surgeries at a lower cost: They genarally do not offer pre-operative lab work or pain medications, they are a tax-free entity which lowers their cost of doing business, and they receive thousands (and sometimes millions) of dollars which helps to subsidize the cost of the surgery on your pet!!! P.S....Sorry to have to rate us, but I could not submit this comment without doing so..... Read Less

Dr. Neering is everything you could want in a vet (or a doctor for that matter!). We moved from Chesapeake to Hampton 3 years ago and still continue to take our cats to her. She doesn't give up -- even when things look bleak. She's agressive in her treatment, but realistic in letting you know what the outcomes could be. She's also very well educated and willingly brings forth both cliical research and anecdotal evidence that can help you understand what you're up against and help you make a decision. Our Madeline is alive and doing well today thanks to her dedication and unwavering committment. I also commend her compassion -- for both the pet and their person. I wish I could find a ""people"" doctor with the compassion, expertise, and committment that I have found in Dr. Neering. One reader wrote that CHA is pricey, but in my experience, they are no more expensive than lots of the others out there and certainly, in my experience -- MUCH better than. You get what you pay for! We recently purchased a puppy from an irresponsible breeder and upon having it examined by Dr. Alfred Brooks, he determined it had a a skin problem that was the fault of the breeder who should not be selling dogs in this condition. He suggested that they should bear the cost of treatment and provided me with a diagnostic letter as documentation, which the breeder accepted and refunded us the approximate amount to cover the veterinary care. If Chesapeake Animal would have thought to look at the notes from blue pearl and paid attention just maybe there could have been a different out come. I short I believe there is a lack of knowledgable veterinarians. You are supposed to relay on them for the care of your animals. I mean that is their job. Read Less

Unfortunately, our first visit was when our cat, Henry had become very ill.  Dr. Kim was a true professional....very knowledgeable, but also very sensitive to our situation.  He guided us through the process and ultimately, we had to put our cat down.  This was an extremely difficult time for us and Dr. Kim and his staff treated us with the utmost respect.  I truly believe that they did everything they could for Henry and showed a great deal of compassion.  We now take our other cat, Ruby, for check-ups.  We are pleased with the care provided and will continue to use their services. We have been to several other Vets in the area and find that none of them come close to the attention and care that we receive at Chesapeake Animal Hospital.

I really appreciate the fact that Dr. Brooks went out of his way and made me aware that the breeder should be held responsible and that he helped me recover the cost of treatment.
