I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place yet. All you need to know is TOP vets, TOP support staff, TOP cleanliness, TOP knowledge. Every time we come in, we are greeted immediately. They place us in a room immediately (which is great because we have a fidgety dog that growls at strangers coming in and out of the front doors). Sometimes our wait is a little long in the room and sometiems it isn't, but it is a small office and we've never waited longer than an hour. Absolutely spectacular vet! They're unbelievably friendly, patient, caring, helpful, and personable! I can't say enough how fabulous this vet is. If you live in Hampton Roads, this is where you need to go for veterinarian needs. My cat is the most skittish little thing on Earth around new people, but she was perfectly comfortable here and the vets treated her with love and compassion. Our dog has serious skin issues, and they correctly diagnosed him and also treated him with love and compassion that rivals our own. He's had bad experiences at the vet in the past, but he was happy and comfortable the entire time. The Vet Assistants played with him and pet him, and even gave him a complimentary bath/nail trim. The staff at The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center are second to none. I am doubtful and questioning by nature, but the diagnosis' from the doctors have been spot on every time. They are the 'Real Deal' and actually care for your animal. I have worked in, and used the services of, several veterinary clinics on both Coasts, and none come close to Cooke Veterinary. Today simply sucked. My 11 year old Golden got really sick last night and after fighting and praying all night I knew his time was done. Of course there is always something else. I also had a work commitment and needed to be at a conference all day on top of all this. With tears in my eyes I called Dr Cooke's office at 8:00 and the response I received was simply profound. They bent over backward to help me and changed their scheduled appointments to fit me in, told me to expedite and at 8:20 I was in the office with a catatonic 97 lb Golden. They brought me in, no bureaucratic Brava Serea (BS) and evaluated him and administering meds for comfort at 8:25. After doing ultrasounds, breath sounds and a more detailed evaluation , Thud had a seizure and the decision was made, it was time. They placed blankets under his head, administered the euthanasia cocktail. Moments later Thud was a rest. They were professional, compassionate, knowledgeable and treated me like they understood the agony I was experiencing. The staff validated my concerns and the actions I had proactively taken. They provided a thorough exam (on the floor, playing with my dog) and explained everything. Recently moved & wanted a Vet that is closer to home. Took my adorable Persian kitty to Cooke and got world class service! The appointment lasted a very long time because Dr. Cooke & her assistant (sorry, forgot her name) discussed in length my cat's whole health, not just the concern of that day. We even discussed holistic options- what a breath of fresh air! They asked lots of questions and answered all of mine without being rushed "to get to the next patient". There was no wait hardly at all to meet with the Dr. and the entire staff was informative,friendly & caring. Wish I could find a Dr's office like that for the humans in my family. I switched to this Vet because my old ones quality of care was going downhill. On the very first visit I felt welcomed. Dr. Marr and staff were very professional and answered every question i had and gave me insight on whats to come with my dogs condition. They also offered to give me paper scripts to help save money on medications and for me to shop around. The old vet wouldn't do that. I feel a sense of relief when I go to the office. Great job guys. Dr. Marr has made Ronnie act like a new dog! His arthritis and hip dysplasia have not been an issue since she has been treating him. Mr. Stu Parsons I have been researching your claims with my staff and your negative Google review of our practice. You board your dogs with us on occasion, including last weekend. You were scheduled to pick your dogs up Monday evening. When we contacted you early Monday afternoon to make arrangements with you to get your dogs, you told my staff that you were delayed and would not arrive before we closed (which was 30 minutes earlier than normal closing time). Despite closing early, my staff members offered to stay later on Monday to accommodate you picking up your dogs, which you turned down, saying you would pick them up Tuesday instead. On Tuesday we had 4 inches of snow/ice on the ground, so my staff members were slightly delayed in opening the center. However, they were there from 8:30-10:30am, and called you several times to arrange to pick up your dogs. You never answered your phone - our only method to reach you. My staff finally reached you on Tuesday afternoon when they returned for care rounds, and you picked up your pets Tuesday evening. Your complaint is that you should not need to pay us for the additional day of boarding because the vet hospital was closed for appointments. We still incur operating costs when your pets are with us, regardless of whether the center is open for appointments. Our staff still cares for your pets, in this case, traveling in the ice and snow to do so. By analogy, we are also closed for appointments 3 Saturdays a month and every Sunday. You have paid to board your dogs with us on those days, presumably with the understanding that we still incur operating costs and care for your pets when the center is "closed." I think we've established that we tried our best to accommodate you, especially under the circumstances. To Mystifyd01, Your kitty was diagnosed with a fatal untreatable condition. You subsequently called many times to ask our staff questions. Each time you called, you were informed that we needed to examine Patches to offer the best palliative care possible, based on his current physical condition and findings. There is no treatment for the condition he had. There is only supportive care such as fluid therapy, pain meds, or humane euthanasia. You never scheduled any follow up exams. We cannot help you if you will not bring the pet to us. That is your responsibility as the pet owner.Read Less

The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center DOES NOT RECOMMEND VACCINATING ANY PET EVERY 2 WEEKS UNTIL THE AGE OF 20 WEEKS. This owner is misinformed on her information. Each pet is examined and a unique vaccine protocol is recommended…uniquely for that pet. While owners see over vaccination as a problem because of internet 'media hype', the truth is that veterinarians are vaccinating pets significantly less than even 5 to 10 years ago. As we see thousands of pets each year (the owner and the breeders DO NOT), we see the effects of under vaccinating pets as well (such as poor immune systems, disease outbreaks, and over all poor doers). In my 20 years of practice I have seen breeders giving the sterile water and not the vaccine (without realizing it), and giving inactivated vaccine because it was not shipped and handled properly. I have seen 'recalls' of vaccination by lot number because it was ineffective during the quality control process. While 'vaccinating' is not surgery, it is a serious medical procedure that must be done correctly and timely. We don't have lay people vaccinate our children do we? And there is a reason for that! Our recommendations will and have always been for the best health of the pet. We are sorry that this client did not agree with our recommendations and are happy that they have found a veterinarian they are happy with. We only want the best health and place of care for the pet. That has been our philosophy from the beginning and continues to be our philosophy today. Her statement that we recommend vaccinating pets every 2 weeks until 20 weeks is just NOT TRUE! Read Less

I was initially very impressed and pleased with this vet. Unfortunately when it came down to vaccinating my puppy we did not see eye to eye. They insisted that he needed to be vaccinated every 2 weeks until 20 weeks of age. Which came out to a total of FIVE DA2PPV. I told them I did not want the extra two and thought it was very excessive. They told me that it was standard procedure and that any vet I went to would tell me the same. So when I went to take him to swimming classes they wouldn't accept my paperwork because they had written on it that he REQUIRED TWO more vaccines. I called them up, they refused to change it and insisted he was NOT safe to be around other dogs until he got the last one. I very promptly took him to another vet and they took a look at him. I showed him his record, asked his opinion, and he told me that he was perfectly up to date and healthy, no need to over vaccinate, especially for no reason. I would NOT recommend taking your dog there. Unless you dish out the cash and OVER vaccinate your dog then they'll make it so you can't take your puppy to any classes or facility! I'm all for vaccinations, they are VERY important, but when your going to put my dogs health at risk by OVER VACCINATING because you think you can suck a couple hundred more bucks out of me because you think you can force me to come back by screwing with the paperwork? Think again. I put my dog first, they can line they're pockets somewhere else. And all this coming from a so called 'holistic' practice. This is a great veterinary clinic! My pets have been seeing Dr. Mosely for well over a year now & I've always been impressed with the transparency with which their care is handled. I currently have a cat that is FIV+ & Dr. Mosely & the staff have been wonderful in helping me become educated on this disease, answering all my questions clearly & patiently. I appreciate that they campaign for preventative care & wellness. The blend of Eastern & Western medicine at this clinic makes it stand out from other area practices. From the moment I went through the doors of this practice, I was NOT impressed. I was lectured by technicians half my age that my dog was overweight and I was feeding him the wrong food. They tried to get me to buy their brand that they kept pushing at every opportunity. Their prices are outrageous and the level of care that my rescue dog received was subpar at best. We did have a good laugh where I work going over their selection of dog foods saying we could use them for appetizers at the next department function. I am a visitor to the United States where I have a number of top show dogs that are bred by me and co-owned that are in residence in Chesapeake, VA. I travel quite a bit and have visited veterinarians in many countries. I am very impressed with Cooke Veterinary Clinic and the staff and veterinarians there. Not only are they open to discussing the way that things are done in other parts of the world, they are interested in alternative therapies with the objective of a good outcome for each and every dog. Because the dogs that I bring to them are very valuable I have to have the best in veterinary care in every case. I have found their clinic to be the best that it has been my pleasure to visit. I have quite a few dogs as a hobbyist breeder. I bring everyone to Dr. Cooke and Dr. Mosely because the clinic, the staff and the vets are the best in the area. I have young puppies as well as old senior dogs and I make sure that each of them receives the best possible diet and care. I have used several other vets in the area and have found a few good ones but an exceptional vet is a rare find. The simple things such as a good location and a very clean facility are great but the knowledge of all of the staff and the vets and their well equipped clinic give me such peace of mind. They handle everything from routine exams to emergencies with such skill and they offer advice and ideas that reflect their years of experience and their commitment. We have been bringing our 4 cats to Cooke Veterinary Medical Center for a couple of years. Although I have felt that their prices are extremely high, I liked Dr. Cooke and thought that my pets were getting the best possible care there. That is, until this past weekend. We were told that one of our cats, who is 15 years old, seriously needed a dental cleaning. They presented every possible scenario that could result from not getting it done (pain, infection, with resulting organ failure, etc., etc.) but they really don't discuss the risks of putting an older animal under. Bloodwork was done in advance, and everything was found to be normal. (Incidentally, Dr. Cooke was not the vet who did the procedure.) During the cleaning, two teeth needed to be extracted. This procedure, including the bloodwork, feline leukemia/heartworm test (required by the clinic), medication, extractions, etc. cost in excess of $700.00. Afterwards, we got a call saying that our cat could not be picked up because she had not come out of the anasthesia. We finally got her, but had to bring her to an Emergency Veterinary Clinic, because she was totally unresponsive. The vet there told us that she had apparently suffered some sort of neurological ""event"" while under anasthesia. After she spent the entire weekend there, fortunately we were able to bring her home. She is ok, but not quite herself, and we can only hope she'll continue to improve. To make matters worse, the vet from Cooke never even called us to see how our cat is doing. The total bill for this fiasco came to over $1,200.00. I am just thankful that our cat lived. She was perfectly healthy and very active, with no apparent illnesses before the dental procedure. I don't know if the vet at Cooke did anything to cause this reaction, but I now feel that paying the most possible money for veterinary care is not the answer. Read Less

I brought my dog there 4 years ago when he was very ill. A doctor quickly diagnosed him and he was soon well. Since we have seen other doctors including Dr. Cook and get very few answers but plenty of bills. We are constantly being asked to have additional tests done. Excellent practice! We have four dogs, one of which is a rescue who had several problems. Both doctors are exceptional. They are caring, knowledgeable professionals. The entire staff is friendly and helpful. They are very thorough but do not generate revenue with unnecessary tests. Both doctors will take the time to explain the diagnosis and the treatment. You can ask all the questions you want and get answers instead of being rushed out the door. We first went there after our vet of many years moved away and we had to have our dog of almost 18 years put down. It was the first time they had seen us and they treated us with compassion and caring during a very difficult time. They will let you wait, or even observe, while your pet is in surgery. Cooke vet clinic is all image... they push tests and treatments for your pet to make money, plain and simple. They misdiagnosed our pet time and time again and after much money was spent we finally went elsewhere and received answers and an effective treatment. We felt like they just wanted us to keep coming back and should have referred us to an Internal Medical Specialist after a bunch of visits and no answers. My visit at The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center was terrific. The staff were kind and caring. They were patient with me and answered all of my questions. Dr. Cooke and Dr. McKendry were both extremely knowledgable and walked me through the 'work up' process so as to be put me at ease. I have never experienced my dog being so sick but I was very happy with the entire vet staff. I have never experienced any kind of service like that before. It is good to know that when I have a sick pet I will always rely on The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center. Also my dog loved going to the hospital for check ups after the illness.
