We at Highlands Veterinary Center do our best to make sure all surgeries have the best outcome. No surgery, no matter how routine, is without risk. We inform all of our clients of the risks before hand. When something happens to one of our patients, we are just as devastated as the pet parent. It is particularly distressing to us because we try everything in our power to prevent bad outcomes for all of our patients. There are certain things that are not in our control but we will keep on providing the best care we know how. The vast majority of our clients know that we care. Read Less

Our healthy, energetic 6 ½ month old Papillon puppy died during a routine spaying procedure at this clinic. This was devastating. I know there is some risk for any procedure but the veterinary staff told us there was no additional risk for a small puppy. Now we don’t know what to think. The vet, Dr. Springer, assured us that all correct procedures were followed; however, he and his clinic were not able to keep our healthy puppy alive. We trust the vets to give us professional advice and keep our best friends safe. But the pet owner assumes all the risk for the procedure and still pays for an unsuccessful outcome. We miss our little puppy. Read Less

Everytime we need to be seen for anything we're told we need to get an exam!! Just had an exam in may 2016 go in to get flea meds we're told needs another exam in order to get flea meds because the exam we had 7 months ago was a different exam even though it cost the same and on the receipt it states physical exam. I just called to get an explanation cause when I called to have him seen in may they said they had to do an exam before they could issue antibiotics incase he was sick so we were ok with that now we bring him in for a bordetella vacine and ask about flea prevention and they say we need to give him an exam in order to give him flea prevention!!!! We've been to alot of different vets over the years and have been going her for the past 7 years. It's a shame because now that I look back over the years it used to feel good when I left confident that my dog was healthy and now everytime I go it feels like I'm going to this vet for the first time because it's so impersonal they don't spend anytime with the dog no petting or talking to the dog or any kind of interaction at all! Pretty obvious that greed has taken over another practice... oh well on to the next! They've lost our business & will not refer another person to this practice. Read Less

There are no words to explain how wonderful this vet team is. My sweet pup had a freak accident that put her in shock and she was holding on to life by almost nothing. I rushed her here (not even knowing this office but it was just the closest place) and I can now say this will be our forever vet for all my furbabies. She went from the team confirming with us that we would want them to resuscitate her if needed, to bringing my sweet baby home a couple hours later. She still has a long road ahead to recovery, but the team that works here are truly Angels. They called first thing in the morning to check on her and answered every possible question I had. The vet tech Amanda was so wonderful to my sweet girl and to us I cannot thank her enough. They truly did everything they could for Marlee, and saved her life. As a last resort,  I found this place to board my dog Max for 11 days because the place I really wanted to take him was booked during the time period my husband and I would be on vacation. Based on their website and reviews, we did not receive exceptional service. And I must say we were truly unhappy and disappointed with the service and very poor communication (mainly from the groomer and how the person in charge handled our concerns). Here is a list some of the things we weren't happy about:*#1- I asked for pictures to see how our dog was doing since this was his first time at the center. Granted I found out that they don't provide that service to put my mind at ease but the fact that no one responded back until I came back to pick up Max was unacceptable.*#2-I wanted my dog groomed while I was away. So, I sent a picture to them. I advised them that I uploaded a picture of how I wanted my dog groomed on their pet portal (not once did I mentioned I emailed them a pic). Which I was told they didn't get the picture. I couldn't understand how they didn't get the picture and when I went to their website, I could see the picture I sent them on the pet portal. Nonetheless, I was told that since they couldn't see the pic, the groomer would call me and I could text her the picture of what I wanted Max to look like. I never received that call. So fast forward, I go to pick up my dog and he has one of  the most unattractive haircuts I have ever seen on him. Of course, I didn't want to pay for the haircut because #1, it wasn't what I asked for. And I was very clear about where the picture could be found of what I did want. Not to mention, the groomer never called me back for me to text her the picture of what I wanted since the vet center claim that they didn't see it. So, I share this with the person overall in charge and all I heard was a ton of excuses. She mentioned several times she would talk to the groomer. Great, but how is that solving my issue. When I clearly communicated what I wanted. It was documented for the groomer to call me and she chose not because she was busy after 11 days of having my dog. WOW!!!! Unacceptable!!!! The person overall in charge also mentioned that she was away on vacation and she normally checks the pet portal and that may play a part as to why no one saw the picture. Unacceptable....someone else should know what you do when you are away. And then, she tried to tell me that it was a new system. Wrong answer!!!! Even if that was true, you can't change the fact that it was documented in the notes for the groomer to call me so I can tell her what I wanted MY money to pay for.  So, at this point I needed to leave so I could go to work. And after hearing those excuses and so much more, she (the person in charge) offered to reduce the grooming cost from $48 to....get this a whopping $35. And the reason for this was because she (the person overall in charge) still needed to pay the groomer who did a lousy job on my dog. Hey, that's not my problem. She (the groomer) didn't think about that when she did a rush job on my dog 1 hour from the time I called to let them know I needed to have my dog by noon today. Just for the simple fact that  all of the communication problems were on their end, she should have waived the entire grooming fee. But she didn't.*#3-I don't believe Max was cared for  properly, which was another reason why I wanted pictures. He ran to the water bowl when he got home. And he ate the food I left him before I went to work and when my husband came home shortly after, he refilled the bowl and Max ate again. So it was like he hadn't had food or water in a few days.My overall experience with this place was so terrible, I just told the person in charge she would never have to worry about us coming there again. And guess what the crazy thing is...they just lost business. I just moved to Chesapeake and was looking for a great vet center and after my boarding experience....well, let's just say...that is NOT going to happen. This really bothers me how it was all handled. I may have to take this further and recoup the rest of the grooming fee. Read Less

Staff was very friendly, however, the Vet never introduced himself or never offered to shake my hand(first time visit). It was a very cold introduction. I felt very rushed while he was is the room. I was asking questions and after each short answer, he would start to gather his things to leave. Never asked if I had anymore questions. My puppy was dragged to the weigh scale by his collar. It was his first time to the vet and the staff continued to pick him up and get in his face. By the time he was on the table he was shaking. A very, very negative experience for his first time to the vet. No one took the time to make sure he was comfortable before he was examined. Again, they were nice to me, I'm just not sure how equipped they are to handle my animal the correct way. Unfortunately, I'll be finding another vet. Read Less

Okay... So the wife and I were in a bind to find a kennel for the holidays. Our dog's regular kennel was booked through the new year so this was our next choice. We book the dates, drop off Molly (our dog), and we head out to see family for the holidays. We just picked her up after 12 days of staying at this "Veterinary" office.... and we have some serious issues with how she was cared for.Molly was covered in dog feces and urine, and was sprayed with a deodorant to try to mask the smell. This was strange to us as we were told she would have ample time out doors to do her business, and Molly has never had an issue with being potty trained. Next, the whole drive home she is panting wildly and she NEVER pants. We take her into the house and she runs to her water bowl and drinks what is left in her water bowl. We refill it. She drinks the whole bowl. We refill it again and she drinks another half of a bowl. It was like she hadnt had water in days. Finally, at around 2am molly jumps out of her bed and vomits a large wad of what appeared to be food. The "food" was still completely solid and at LEAST the size of her whole stomach. Completely undigested and larger than the size of a softball. Molly is a Jack Russell. I dont think she ate that much food.....To keep this short and to keep me from going off too much... this place is dirty, unprofessional, and does not seem to know a thing about pet care.We have NEVER had these issues at her regular kennel (which we wont name to keep this from looking like a competitor leaving a review). Molly will never be returning to this kennel.

Read Less

Dianne is one of the best groomers who has taken GREAT care of our fur baby and love how soft and beautiful she is when she is done with her and love that she 'dremmels' her toe nails so not to clip them too short and hurt her like they used to at PetSmart! They are very personable, resepectful, professional, and compassionate. Thank you Highlands Vet! -Whitney, Jeff, and Marlee Read Less

Read Less
