This is a great place to bring your critters when they need to see a doctor. They have a friendly staff and they take good care of your critter. Been going here for ten years now. My cat is in pain and in distress, but this animal hospital refuses to treat her unless all vaccines are done FIRST. Note they expired less than 3 weeks ago. How can you say you care for animals when you will turn away one in pain, simply because you cant make your money. Read Less

This place is horrible, the kennels where they kept my dog were nasty and their was mold on the ceiling , the cages were rusted. The entire place was run down, if you are planning to keep your pet there please go look in the back where they will be keeping your pup. This by far is the worst vet office I have ever been to. The staff is sweet as can be and they really seem to care about the animals they see. They were very kind in accommodating an emergency situation during operating business hours. However Dr. Burkey is rude and I don't trust his medical opinion, at least not with my pet's condition. Same with the fill in vet I've seen in his place. They overlooked his diagnosis and wanted to test and treat for everything under the sun. My dog is elliptic and needs medication to manage her seizures. Every time I called for a refill I was told I needed to being my dog in for all these tests. I was even told once that she needed a heart worm test before it could be refilled. When I addressed this with the Vet, he was very rude and disrespectful and told me "maybe I should just find a new vet". And that is exactly what I did. I think it is ridiculous that they hold refills over your head unless you get every test under the sun. It is just a way for them to make money off of sick animals. Very sad! Read Less

We moved to VA in July of 2007. Dr. Burkey was right down the street and I needed a Vet for my two cats and German Shepherd. In the 8 years we lived there, I never took my animals to anyone else. My first cat with issues was brought back from the brink a few times by Dr. Burkey and another Vet that was working there at the time. We continued (as a team) to search for the right combinations of medicines so he could have quality of life and he survived for 2 extra years to pass away at 15. My second cat was diagnosed with stage 4 renal failure at 16. I was educated very well by Dr. Burkey and the staff on how to care for him. We tried food after food and each month I picked up fluids for at home treatment. This particular cat lived to a ripe old age of 17. My German Shepherd just turned 13! She has Symmetric Lupoid Onychodystrophy and was diagnosed almost 2 years ago. A very debilitating condition where her toenails lift off the cuticles. Dr. Burkey was right there, finding the latest and best combination of medications to help get her into remission. He is one of the few Vets that has ever sent a personally signed sympathy card to my home. He is a truly wonderful person and Vet! His staff members are caring and loving and long term which speaks volumes! We now live in Kansas and I will never forget Dr. Burkey, Debbie, Angie and Sheila. they are heaven sent to fur babies! I have taken my dogs to Dr. Burkey for 13 years. He saved my dogs lives more than once. He and his wife are wonderful...I love Angie she did an enormous favor for me when Berkie was born. Dr. Burkey, his wife, and the staff here saved our Bubba's life when he had gall bladder problems. It's a long story, but suffice it to say they love our dogs as much as we do, and they all went more than the extra mile to help us! The staff took him in without question or hesitation. I patiently waited and watched the staff all morning long juggle a very hectic schedule along with some very ill pets whose owners left empty handed. Sheila was absolutely awesome and so kind with those folks. The stress of the morning NEVER showed on the faces of these kind, caring and giving staff members and I know you can't find folks like that just anywhere! Dr Berkey and his staff are knowledgeable and seam to care about my pets. I have been going to Bermuda Hundred Animal hospital for a couple of years now. However, Dr. Berkey may be a good medical vet but I am very displeased with his people skills and his ability to listen to what the patient’s owners want. I don’t want run expensive tests on my dog because of his age. In addition his prices on medicine are VERY high. Online prices for the same medication are literally a fraction of what he charged me. I paid for several tests over a couple of years that according to several pet articles I have read are completely unnecessary. WATCH OUT for what you want for your pet and make it very clear to him. Don’t let him sell you medications or tests that are not necessary and check online before you pay his highly inflated prices. Read Less

I have taken my three pekingese to BHAH for 8 years. I found my female in the city of Richmond (lost) and took her to them. They were fantastic with her. After 6 months I bought a male peke and soon my female was expecting. She was a tiny little thing and come to find out she had 6 puppies. They performed a c-section and all the puppies were dead except for 1 male. The staff Angie, Erin and Dr. Berkey were so wonderful. I named the little one Berkie after Dr.Berkey. The new mom would not nurse him. Angie is the most compassionate soul on earth. I was in nursing school and she took him home with her for 2 weeks and carried him to BHAH every day. Needless to say he is one spoiled rotten dog. They have always given my animals the very best of care. Even one time when I had concerns about a member of their staff they were very attentive to my complaint and did every thing they could to work around that. Also I have to give a shout out to the BEST GROOMER in Richmond (Cindy is the best). I love all of these guys. If you go there you will never go anywhere else. Erin, Angie and Dr. Burkey are three of the most amazing, compassionate and knowledgeable people that we have EVER met in our lives. They don't only go the extra mile, they run a marathon. We know that sounds like a cliche but from the bottom of our heart, we wanted to write this review because they are amazing. They not only took care of my beloved Rooney for his whole life, but when he passed away recently they went way beyond the call of duty to comfort us and to make us understand and accept his death.
