You could not pay me to bring my dog to this vet again!! Both, the nurse and vet were rude and would not answer my questions. They switch the diagnosis twice and neither diagnosis was close in nature. I am not going to give my pet medication without knowing what it is. When I asked the nurse about one of the medications, she didn’t know what it was or used for and went to ask the vet. When she came back, she advised me that everything I need is at the front desk. I asked again about the medication. Her response “do you not want it, do you want me to take it off”. I said “no I want an answer”. She walked out of the room. The vet came in and began to explain why they didn’t do an oral test. Are you kidding me?? My take - they weren’t quite sure what the diagnose was so guessed and prescribed something they felt would maybe work but didn’t expect I would question it. Never again!! Read Less

Since I have been going there for years they were well aware of her weight which has been within that range always. A healthy weight. The dr was very rude, uncaring and put my dog thru unnecessary pain. Hopefully her diagnosis was correct but I will not be back. I'm just frustrated with this clinic! I'm just now checking reviews because my daughter had recommended this clinic because she had taken her puppy there 3 years ago, but hadn't taken him back since ! So a couple of months ago I decided to take him back for a checkup and get his shots caught up.The dog was healthy up to that point, now it's a constant thing with infections, antibiotics & prescriptions ! Now the vet is trying to convince me that the dog has allergies & will have to take an expensive medication for the rest of his life costing me $59.00and $9.99 for the heartworm pill on a monthly basis ! I can't afford that! I'm going to have to get a 2nd opinion, the dog was healthy before I took him back to academy! This has cost me about $400.00 over 3 months and this is making me feel like a sucker for a scam ! "I just need someone to assure me that I'm not a sucker in this case" Read Less

We recently switched to Academy and have been extremely satisfied with the care for both of our dogs. Our fur babies are usually very nervous and skeptic about vets but both of them calmed down very quickly after being seen by the vet and the technicians. This speaks volumes by itself! But The staff there are also very considerate about the cost of vet care and I like that they develop a plan based on our budget that is still very thorough and concise. It is obvious that they care and are compassionate about the animals but they also see the bigger picture as well. ive never been displeased with Academy... from long ago until just now. Management has changed, Vets have changed but things still putter along. --- Normally if my family has a situation i am the one to deliver the patient, I am writing to speak to yesterday's experience. I was babysitting my new grand daughter away from the house. We have been adopted by this year old black kitty... he stole my cats food and tried his best to be one of the family (outside animals have we) he befriended my dog, played with us all, took walks and such. THEN he went missing for a little, and upon his return he acted strange. My wife had become attached to this new yard critter and worried for him, she went out in the middle of the night to get special dishes and a carrier to care for him, but he disappeared again... THEN while i was babysitting Friday my wife noticed upon his return that he was badly injured (we didntt touch this cat much, had NOT adopted him, my cat dosent need attention too much and the new cat was just a squatter.) my wife in her concern convinced the injured cat into that carrier and carried the cat to Academy... it was Friday PM and became near closing, the staff was wonderful, VERY caring with the injured cat and VERY patient with my distraught wife. They all went the etra mile Friday evening and now we are on "Cat Watch" as this animal recovers from EXTENSIVE wound surgery and diagnosis. The cat knows it is loved and my wife hopes it survives and I thought this service was expemplary... Thanks folks!Read Less

These people KILLED my dog. My dog began getting dizzy and would fall down in September of 2009. She got to the point where she couldn't eat real dog food, we had to feed her baby food. We visited this vet at LEAST once a week, for them to give her check up after check up, only to say "come back if she gets worse" well she did. In January of 2010, she collapsed and blood was pouring out of the side of her mouth that she couldn't eat out of. We rushed her to the emergency vet, we had given up all hope. After running a couple of tests, the people at the emergency vet determined that her condition had developed from a MINOR EAR INFECTION. YES, this vet can not even determine a minor ear infection. Had he looked in her ear, she would never have died. RIP to the dog who was my moms crying shoulder through her divorce, my first puppy, my everything. We love you Jessie girl. Let this be a lesson to all. Don't bring your dog here for anything other than a shot. You don't want to lose your best friend like my family did.Read Less

My mother recently called this office because our dogs ear was bleeding from the inside, and they have been our vet for many years. We have never given them any problem and have always paid our bills. However, we did not have the full amount needed to cover a office visit. We asked if our dog should be seen and they said "Yes". We asked for a grace in coming though we could not pay. My mom offered to pay a portion of the visit and the balance within two weeks. They called back and she was told the office manager said they would not see our dog unless we could pay the full amount of the office visit and whatever might be needed from the visit itself. "Too many people have taken advantage of us" was the retort. I realize doctors are often taken advantage of, but not everyone does this and we have a history with them for many years and we have never asked for help-our bills have always been paid. No mercy was granted, and my pet has a bleeding inside her ear. There are no emergency room options for pets and owners who cannot pay that I know of. If there is, please post it! We will look for a new vet. I wanted to get this information out. We used to feel content with this office when Dr. Mason Jones was the full time vet. Since he has either retired, or sold out, or expanded...not really sure, they have become a smooth money making machine. You are charged for every little thing, even your prescriptions if you need one and go in and are even current in your visits and bill is paid up. Try them out...you will see. You will not find any compassion or friendliness at the front desk either. It is clear that compassion love of animals is not their priority now, they are clearly just a business. That is a change from what they used to be.Read Less

Dr. Mason had been my vet for 32 years. Both he and his assistant, Deborah Jenkins were the best around. The news I received was not always what I had hoped, but it was honest and fair. He had a special attachment with his "clientele." Unfortunately, Dr. Mason has retired and new vets have taken over the practice.  Today I had an emergency situation with my 15 year old cat. Upon coming home from work, I found the cat in distress as he could not breathe. I knew that our time with Tiger was limited given his frail body and age so I immediately called with his symptoms and asked if I arrived by closing if the cat could be seen. it is a 30 minute drive to the office which resulted in me arriving a few minutes before closing. The staff greeted me and made immediate preparations for my cat to be seen as it was obvious that he was in distress and pain. The new vet upon entering the reception area, took a look at my pet and announced that it was something she did not have time for that day as it would take 3 hours to examine him. I attempted to bring up the topic of putting him down given his age and rapid regression in health, but she did not even want to hear anything I had to say, again reiterating that she didn't have the time. She handed me a card to an emergency vet. When I told her I called prior to coming with the cat's symptoms and was informed that it was okay if I was in before the doors were locked, she questioned where I lived and glanced at the clock. Upon telling her my residence, she asked why I don't use a vet closer to my home and off of Courthouse Road. I am a medical professional who loves what I do. I am very cognizant of time, but try to accommodate my patients if at all possible and definitely if I tell them to come in. Emergencies come up. I was able to find a vet in Chester who may not be as inexpensive as Dr. Jones had been, but who was willing to take the time to examine my cat. Unfortunately things did not end as I had hoped with my pet, but at least I have a vet who is human, particularly at a difficult time. Rest in Peace Tiger. I miss you. Read Less

Update on Saturday, February 4 2012:  Upon review of shot records they provided to me, I just realized that this veterinary clinic gave my dog a vaccine that had been expired for almost one year.  I have already inquired with the vaccine manufacture and complained to the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine.  Don't let this happen to you! Here's my review posted earlier the same day:Yesterday, I had the unfortunate experience of sitting through a 20-minute lecture on the benefits of one specific brand of dog food by the new veterinarian at Academy Veterinary Clinic.  I sincerely feel that she simply enjoys hearing herself talk; as at no point did she even take a breath or give me the opportunity to acknowledge her, ask a question, or explain my dog's history.  Upon recommendation of a neighboring resident, I visited here for a dog exam and series of shots.  This vet's self-introduction and mind-numbing chatter lasted much longer than her 2-minute so-called exam of my dog.  Three serious questions posed by me, only in interruption of stories about her sister or the state of Georgia from where she relocated two weeks ago, were completely disregarded, and she neglected to give my dog two shots (Bordatella and K9 Influenza) that I requested twice.  A request for a recommendation of a local K9 orthopedic was ignored. The price was right-$130.00 for everything, but her complete disregard for my questions, my dog's well being, and her pushy sales tactics for one brand of dog food will lead me to seek future veterinary care elsewhere. Read Less
