We took our guinea pig there and I was very impressed. Staff was very nice when we arrived and made us feel welcome. The doctor and staff handled our guinea pig with great care and explained everything. They were very informative and gave us pricing when it came to additional tests. They also gave us very comprehensive printouts and showed us in the room how to administer medication. They explained their hours up front and told us where to go in case of emergency.  My daughter is the primary caregiver for the guinea pig and they addressed her and spoke to her in a kind and professional manner. I agree with those who have complaints concerning Stahl's fees.  We brought our pet guinea pig in for a checkup.  It turns out she has ovarian cancer.  But they prescribed medication that was premature, since she wasn't suffering any pain at that time.  When a technician came into the room, I asked how much this medicine cost, he said it wasn't too expensive, and proceeded to show us how to administer the dosage.  The vial was a one month supply and cost $32, which I found outrageous and was not reasonably priced.  If he had told me the price beforehand, I would have balked.  But apparently, this is their tactic so that you feel obligated to pay for it.  In hindsight, I should have refused it anyway.  My recommendation would be to find another vet.  There are plenty to choose from. First impressions are lasting and this is my first impression review of Stahl.  I chose to take my ferret to Stahl because my most favorite vet tech, Katie, works there.  She has cared for my ferrets and has always gone above and beyond my expectations.  I trust her, I trust her input on the doctors, and coordinated with her to ensure she was able to see my little guy on his first visit.  Their location is easy to get to--I travel 45 minutes from Maryland and so this is important to me!  I was concerned about parking initially (thanks to google maps directing me to a parking garage that was a 15 minute walk), but there is plenty! Upon walking in, I was impressed with the overall "vibe" of the office.  Warm and open.  I guess I was expecting more of a doctors office feel like I get when I go to other vet offices (we have cats and dogs as well).  I did struggle with the reception area.  I was greeted by one person who helped check me in, but something felt off.  This feeling increased when I was checking out.  A different receptionist checked me out and they weren't very friendly.  Maybe they were having a bad day, maybe that is how they always are? While I don't expect people to be rainbows and glitter all the time, I believe that people should try to keep scowls off their face and maintain a professional demeanor.  IF this is the norm, I recommend working on this as the reception area is ultimately the face of the company. Now the vet visit:  I waited about 15 minutes over my appointment time, but Dr.  Romo let me know ahead of time he was running a bit behind (points for that!).  When called back, Dr. Romo was incredibly thorough ensuring that I understood everything he was asking/telling me.  I appreciate that.  It was in a caring way to ensure that he was speaking plainly to me.  He did not make assumptions about my knowledge, explained how blood is drawn from ferrets, etc.  He wasn't pushy with procedures (i.e. my little guy needs dental cleaning, but was clear that it was not dire at this time).  He answered my questions about his experience with exotics and came in with a smile and positive attitude.  The price point is a bit higher than what I have experienced, but not by much.  Since they cater to exotics only, it makes sense.  Overall, I am pleased with my first experience and will be back in a few months for the little guys dental. Wow!  I cannot begin to express how wonderful the staff is here!  I came in from Richmond, VA with a bunny that had broken its jaw.  I was hopeful it could be fixed, but the scans showed it broken in too many places.  Octavio was the doctor who helped me and I was blown away by his kindness and gentle manner.  It was my daughter's bunny so she wanted me to bring the bunny back to Richmond so she could be with it when it passed, but it just didn't make sense to do for a variety of reasons.  Octavio spent some time on the phone with my daughter sympathizing with her and explaining the situation.  We decided to do it at Stahl so Octavio was with me explaining each step.  His gentle manner made the situation bearable.  When I left, I kept crying in part because of the kindness bestowed upon me by the whole Stahl staff.  Thank you so very much! Stahl is always a  professional and caring team when I take my fur family for health checks. Every time I visit, I know they are doing their best to do right by my animals and to create a health plan that best fits my capabilities. If there is any comment, it would be that Stahl is pricey. I understand that Fairfax is an expensive area, it's tough to find vets who understand exotics, spending money comes with the territory of owning animals, and it only makes sense that they need to make a profit to continue their excellent work. If you have the luxury to not worry about money, please see them. They are wonderful people. If you are tight on money, they will work with you to fit your budget, but regardless, be prepared to take a hit. I think an office visit is around $80 and emergency is around $150, just to be seen (for reference).  I can easily leave with a $200-$400 bill.  Please visit their page or ask them for accurate pricing. For a graduate student that makes little money, it's a major blow every time. Ultimately though, my pets are worth the level of care Stahl provides.  Again, these people are good, and should be definitely considered if you're shopping for a vet. I took my African Pygmy Hedgehog in because of an oral tumor. I knew what to expect (oral cancer is one of the leading two causes of death for hedgehogs). Dr. Stahl examined Abby and confirmed the bad news. He and the technicians and assistants were all very good about not pushing me to make a choice between surgery (which would probably not help) and putting her down. But they seemed genuinely relieved that I chose to put her down to relieve her suffering. And the receptionist could not have been better in dealing with the situation.I was so upset I couldn't talk. Literally. Two weeks later I received a very nice condolences card (the written message took both sides of the card) as well as a little plaque with Abby's footprints. Excellent care! I've been to other exotic vets in the area and by far Stahl was top notch. They only treat exotics so don't expect to bring your cat or dog here. As a first time exotic pet owner (of a fussy bearded dragon), I've found the staff here to be friendly and helpful. I've been here twice with concerns for my pet and they took the time to listen to me and make sure they were fine. I've been bringing my guinea pigs to SEAVS for about five years now. They never fail to impress me with their professionalism, outstanding veterinary services, and kindness. I saw Dr. Hammer for the first time on this last visit and was just as impressed with him as I have been with all the other vets. My sweet little parakeet Kiwi wasn't feeling so hot so I made an appointment and they did SUCH a great job!!! Turns out he was OK but the stress of a schedule change and molting made him a little tired. Just to be sure they did a slide of his droppings and what really stands out is they could have said something like "Oh he needs bloodwork etc." but this is NOT that kind of vet. They do NOT recommend all kinds of tests to get your money. They tell you what they think and see and only offer to perform a test that is actually needed. (In my case it was to make sure he wasn't getting an infection or missing some nutrition) They gave us some handouts and information and really spent the time to make sure ALL our questions were answered. I think we were in there for 40 minutes just peppering Dr. Nielson with a million questions. She is wonderful and I think our tech's name was Bridget? Gosh I forget but she was also wonderful at catching Kiwi without him hurting himself flapping around the cage. I really can't say enough about this place. We live in Northeast D.C. and still travel all the way there because nobody else is qualified enough for our little angel Kiwi!!! Read Less

I went there with my two guinea pigs Pirate and Squeakers. I was worried that might have had a URI. They were absolutely wonderful. They were very gentle with the piggies who are both 3 years old and very accommodating to me and my fiancé. They answered all the questions that we had and we did not feel judged at all by them. Can't really recommend this vet any more highly.  If you have an exotic pet - and yes, rabbits are considered exotics - then this should be your top choice for checkups and medical services.  We have gone many times even though it sometimes takes us an hour to drive there... just didn't feel comfortable taking our bunny anywhere else.  And it's not just us - everyone in the waiting room is always raving about their particular doctor or some major breakthrough they had at Stahl with their pet.  The only slight criticism would be for animal boarding - we felt that the cages were a little small for rabbits if you were to board there for a long trip.  But for a quick trip it is probably fine.  I'll keep it fairly short and just say that it is clear that everyone who works at Stahl, from the front desk to the technicians and of course the doctors, all really care about the animals they see; they are experts in their field; and they really make everything pleasant for the pets and owners. Dr. Stahl was so patient and thorough! He and his team (especially Courtney!) answered all our questions, taught us a lot, and treated our turtle so well. They were able to examine all parts of my turtle without difficulty and without fighting. It's like they completely removed the language barrier between humans and other animals through their knowledge. I completely trust them! The facility is so clean and welcoming and fun to look at. They have exotic animal art and information decorating the walls. They have coffee in the waiting room (but we didn't wait at all--they saw us right away). We adore SEAVS! Dr. Stahl is fantastic, and we have liked everyone else on his staff that we have met. They are professional, knowledgeable, and caring. This is our parrot's regular vet, so we have seen them for check-ups, ailments, nail trimmings, and even once when our bird cracked her beak. We have always left satisfied and with all of our questions answered. Also, and very importantly, the atmosphere is comfortable and species-appropriate with neutral colors and natural themes, from the window shades to the flooring to other decorations. It feels very safe. Only drawback is that because it is fairly small, there is no service for after-hours emergencies. The closest emergency exotic vet is Pender, which almost killed our bird (they allowed her to fly into an uncovered window). Thankfully she survived. Until SEAVS has emergency care, go to Blue Ridge in Purcellville instead of Pender. Read Less

I took my hedgehog to Stahl Exotic for the first time for an annual checkup. I've never taken my hedgie to the vet before so I didn't know what to expect... honestly, I was quite nervous and anxious to let anyone handle him. But I must say, our experience with Stahl Exotics was awesome! From the moment I walked in, the place was extremely clean and the staff was extremely professional and friendly. The ladies at the front desk were cheery and made me feel extremely welcomed. They asked me if I found the place okay and if my drive in was good. They offered me complimentary water, teas and coffee too! After we did the initial check in, we were seen almost immediately. The vet technician asked me the basic questions about my hedgie and walked me through the normal check up (what to expect, anesthesia, etc). He told me I'd most likely need to anesthetize my hedgehog because they usually don't like being handled by strangers. When Dr. Sommers walked in, she was extremely professional and walked me through the whole process of the exam again. They had me sign an anesthesia form and talked me through each bullet points and didn't rush me at all. Once everything was said and done, she took him back to the vet area and I waited back in the waiting area. No more than 10 minutes later, Dr. Sommers came to sit with me and explained that he was doing fine - awake and active. She told me my hedgie had an ear infection and I had a choice of either treating it as bacterial infection or test for mites. She said the test would be an additional $30 but that it was no pressure. She let me weight out my options and I didn't feel pressured to pay for the additional mites test. And she reassured me that he might have gotten an ear infection from water getting in his ears from a bath. I opted for the treatment for a bacterial infection and would pay for medication instead. After the consultation, she went back to grab my hedgie and I checked out. The price for the whole exam plus two medications was pretty high... but they did include a complementary nail trim which was nice. They had both medications on hand and they explained how to administer them and the best tips to do it. Overall, my experience went smoothly and I will definitely be coming back. The price was worth it knowing that my hedgie was in good hands!! I would be giving a 5 star rating if only the price was a bit lower... but a definite 5 star for the professionalism and the staff! All I can say is AMAZING! I rushed my ferret there who had gotten trap in between the bars of her cage somehow...when I got there they took her back immediately! Sadly she didn't make it but they did everything they could to save her! They even gave me a clay paw print of her paw for me to take home free of charge! I love Stahl. We adopted a cockatiel in Arizona, and had an amazing exotic vet there. When we moved to NoVa, we were extremely nervous that we wouldn't be able to find the same level of care close by.  We  had a scary situation where our bird got ill suddenly, and ended up taking him to Pender. Although we appreciated the 24/7 service, we didn't get good vibes from the vet or the techs.  After that, we found Stahl. I can't say enough good things about the techs and administrative staff. We haven't actually met with the vet, but we have used Stahl 6-7 times for boarding. The first time we took him in, I asked a million questions, and made sure our Tiel was going to be given attention and proper care.  I am 100% positive they treat our Tiel how we would at home. I always bring a ton of toys so he isn't bored. I'm a little neurotic when it comes to my baby, but they always accommodate me and don't make me feel ridiculous.  He is never nervous when we take him in, in fact, he's a huge ham.  If we are gone on a long trip, I feel comfortable calling and asking how he is doing.  Stahl is about a 30 minute drive for me from Arlington, but it's worth it! 5 big stars for the staff! Professional, caring veterinary team - if you have an exotic pet it is worth the drive from DC! Last summer, my 6-month old parakeet seemed to have a skin irritation and was picking at her feathers aggressively. I was worried she would start a feather plucking habit but was also afraid of taking her to a normal small animal vet. I've owned birds all my life and have run across too many vets who recommend unnecessary tests and procedures that end up harming my birds. After reaching out to several local bird rescue organizations for recommendations, I made an appointment at SEAVS during their convenient weekend hours. The office team is very courteous and we were seen right on time. Dr. Nielsen and the lab technician were careful and soothing with my panicked bird. She ran a physical exam and stool test but could find nothing wrong. She reviewed a few follow up options but told me they were a bit extreme given that my bird otherwise seemed healthy, and recommended I observe her more and change a few environmental factors. I appreciated Dr. Nielsen's thorough but conservative approach, and also that she talked through my bird's care and nutrition to understand her environment and what might be contributing to the behavior. I changed my cage cleaning routines as recommended and my bird stopped picking at her feathers. I am so relieved to have found a wonderful veterinary service for my birds. Exotic vets are generally pricier but I found the cost to be reasonable. The drive is long from DC but it is worth it for the level of care. Read Less

extremely courteous professional staff. very clean and comforting lobby complete with directv and good selection of magazines. went right into an examination room when i got there, doctor and assistant came in five minutes later .. now for the important stuff- took my ill 7 yr 11mo old ferret in for what turned out to be adrenal disease and insulinoma. they took her for tests, gave her an implant to treat adrenal disease, took care of her ears and nails as well. gave me some medicine and instructions. its been one week and Cassie is doing terrific. walking/running, climbing stairs, back to behaving like a typical healthy ferret... a bit on the pricey side but if you love your pet, well worth it. We found out about SEAVS when we took our green-cheek conure there for a severe illness. When she unexpectedly died during treatment, we were treated with extreme kindness by all of the staff there. Dr. Nielsen called us to let us know what happened late, and sent us a hand-written sympathy note. This level of care and concern can not be bought at any price! Everyone there is a thorough professional, and very knowledgeable in exotics care. This includes the administrative staff who go out of their way to process the payment of services with a patient-friendly attitude. The atmosphere is clean and bright, and it is a joy to go there! We have three other parrots who we recently took there for check-ups, and the level of care was exceptional! We will never go anywhere else! Unfortunately, I had to make the tough decision on Saturday to put my chinchilla down. It wasn't what I was expecting to have to do, and it took me a very long time to come to terms with this decision. I know I held up the vet from getting to her other patients because I was so worked up, and it was the hardest decision I'd ever had to make. Everyone was very understanding, did not rush me, and made sure I was able to say goodbye in my own time. Today, in the mail, I received the most heartfelt and unexpected gifts. Dr. Stahl was exactly what my Khado needed. He didn't just give her meds and send her home. He was very thorough in his examination of her ongoing self mutilation. I am very hopeful of her recovery mostly because she was on meds and in a "hard" body cone for 2 weeks already and completely miserable which in turn made me miserable. I was prepared for the worst. Not bringing her home again was a very real possibility. Kathy fitted her with a personally made "soft" collar that immediately alleviated her discomfort. She is home and as happy as I've seen her in 2 weeks. We are both so much happier. Thank our Dr. Stahl, Kathy and staff. Everyone here is very professional,knowledgeable and really care about the animals' well being. Both Dr.Sommers and Dr.Romo as well as the Vet Techs were very good to my rabbit Chewuby. I was very happy with the initial appointment to treat my Guinea pig's UTI. When checking out, I was asked to schedule a follow up appointment. I brought my animal in for the follow up, and the vet weighed her and asked if there was any more blood in her urine. I was in the exam room for literally less than 5 minutes. $72. All he did for $72 was ask me if she's ok! By all means, take your pet here for treatment, but be sure to ask about the cost of any follow up exams, and what the exam entails. Upon my first visit I was a new tortoise owner and he took his time to go over all care aspects of what my new pet needed to live a happy healthy life. Housing, feeding, humidity, size requirements, what to expect as she grew, and he told me that she was a girl and then showed me how he could tell. We have 2 parrotlets, and our oldest bird Patch somehow had his big toenail twisted off.  We were worried we'd have to amputate his toe, a $200 surgery with weeks of bandages and a collar afterwards.  Stahl's told us we could 'wait it out' and the nail will either fall off naturally or heal on it's own, and gave us a cream and some meds so Patch would be safe and comfortable while it was happening.Sure enough, the nail fell off by itself, his toe is healthy and he was his usual self the whole time.  They called us with a follow-up a few weeks later too.  They were very nice to Patch while he was being examined, and answered all my questions very patiently - it was my first time at the vet for something like that.  Thanks Stahl's! When we lived in VA, we went to Stahl. They have the best vets and staff! For my first visit, the vet showed me the anatomy of our bird so that I could figure out if something was wrong and where it would likely occur (such as laying eggs). He was so sweet with our bird! AMAZING office! Our sick Guinea pig brought us here for the first time today and I cannot explain the quality of care and customer service better than just saying, if you have an exotic pet, go here for their care!! Not only was the office updated and really well kept, but everyone there was kind, knowledgable, and cared about our pets wellbeing. For instance, when we first walked in we were greeted and then after announcing we had a very sick pig, was asked to let her see him so she could check to be sure there wasn't labored breathing or anything of concern so that if needed, he could be rushed to the back. Upon visiting with the vet & tech, I was provided with all the information needed and will absolutely come back yearly for checkups and any additional visits. We have taken two hamsters, two bunnies, and a bearded dragon at different times. Fortunately, most of our visits have been routine for minor concerns or well check-ups. One of our bunnies was spayed at SEAVS, and the surgical care was top-notch. The facility is lovely and very clean. If you have an exotic pet, you should be aware that veterinary care can be very expensive. Medical care for a "free" bunny or a $5.00 hamster can be many, many times the cost of the pet and needs to be considered if you want to be a responsible pet owner. These are highly specialized vets with years of additional training to be able to treat so many species of pets, and that is reflected in the cost of care. But I don't think you will find better care in the mid-Atlantic are for your pets. I recommend SEAVS to anyone I encounter with a pocket pet, reptile, or bird. Read Less

My bunny Lilly is getting older, almost 7 years old, and it was time to get a wellness exam, just to make sure she is healthy and happy. Dr. Sommer and her tech were punctual, the exam was thorough, and she explained everything she was checking for as she went along. Lilly has not needed veterinarian attention in the past, so she was quite nervous. The male tech was very gentle but firm in handling Lilly and pet her on the bridge of her nose to calm her throughout the exam. Dr. Sommer and her tech were very knowledgeable on rabbit care and I felt comfortable trusting them with my sweet bunny. They did not force and unnecessary procedures on us, which is really appreciated. I was given a printed care guide to refresh myself with rabbit care, asked any questions i had and was sent on my way.  Lilly will definitely be returning for nail trimmings etc in the future. I have two bunnies and I got them neutered and spayed here and everything went so perfectly. Dr. Costanzo is really the best doctor. I was very nervous because I brought my other bunny to VCA old town (this is before I knew about SEAVS) and they killed my bunny... because they don't specialize in small animals and failed to tell me. They told me they do it all..Bull sh*t.. Here at SEAVS the people here are so kind and caring and always want to your pet to be the best that they can be. Dr.Costanzo assured me everything was going to be ok and sure enough everything was and my two baby bunnies are so happy if not happier. My bunnies love Dr.C. Took my sugar gliders for a check up and the doctor and assistant were very helpful and full of valuable knowledge. Had my boy sugar glider neutered, everything turned out great and he's healthy. Only problem in when we picked him up his pouch was a disgusting mess covered with food and waste. The guy who brought him out didn't event apologize or acknowledge something was wrong. I understand all animals are messy but when ur picking up ur pet who you absolutely love you don't want to see them in that situation. Simple acknowledgement would have been fine or a phone call ...hey can you bring another pouch? Ur boy kinda made a mess of his old one. And yes it was expensive...but if you have an exotic pet I guess you got to expect that. Read Less

I took my little ferret Sophie to SEAVS where I saw Dr. Summer because her condition was quickly becoming critical. Upon arrival they calmly but immediately took my Sophie back to check vitals and evaluate her. I was very impressed with the care and compassion they showed Sophie and I. Dr. Summer discussed all of my options with me and we decided the best option was to put Sophie to rest as she was a very sick little ferret.... Sophies final moments were very peaceful as they gave her pain medication and a sedative so she would fall asleep in my arms before they took her back for euth. They honored my wishes making it so her last memory was of me and my last memory was of her alive. They brought her back to me in a little box just as I had asked. They also brought 2 locks of her fur and a BEAUTIFUL clay print of her paws. Sophies death has not been easy in any way for me but I am happy they were able to help her pass over to the rainbow bridge. I had to take my beardie in today bc she hasn't been eating & is dropping weight. vet Sommer was fantastic and explained everything that could be wrong. she examined her & offered multiple treatments. she listened to us wonderfully & did what we asked. we got set up with medicines, & the tech, Zach, patiently waited on us to get a hand of medicating her. he explained each medicine, the purpose and the dose, so well.nothing but rave reviews! & the price was much lower than I expected it would be! We first found Stahl when we adopted our bunny. Though it was a long drive from West Virginia, the experience at Stahl was well work the trip. We moved to D.C. and there was no question of looking for anyplace else, we already had a vet. The technicians and vets at Stahl are some of the nicest around and cared for our rabbit, Star, as if she were as precious to them as she was to us. After hearing all the good reviews, I felt more than comfortable bring our dwarf rabbit in for a spaying procedure. We were updated all throughout her pre and post-surgery stay, and we brought home a healthy, happy bunny. I have three chinchillas ranging from 6-7 years old, and thus my review is directed to SEAVS' treatment of my chins.  I have been very impressed with SEAVS, and in particular have had appointments with Dr. Stahl, Dr. Sommer, and Dr. Costanzo.  SEAVS was recommended to me from a friend who once took her rabbit there.  I initially brought my older female chin in on an emergency visit due to bloat.  Dr. Costanzo immediately recognized the problem and put my chin on a gas drop, laxative, and pain med regimen that quickly did the trick.  I later brought all three chins in to see Dr. Sommer for a wellness exam.  I appreciated that no unnecessary procedures were pushed on me and that the veterinarians were obviously trained in chinchilla-specific needs and care.  On my last visit, I again brought my older female chin in due to suspected bloat.  While we still don't have an answer as to why she was getting regular periodic bloat, even after diet change, Dr. Stahl kindly set us up with an at-home regimen and dosage information for when her symptoms do flare up to save us the additional expense of another appointment and an hour drive from DC (happy to say she has gone 6 months without a flare up!).The vet technicians were also very friendly.  They handled my chinchillas without hurting them, had solid advice re. administering medication and critical care, and knew exactly how to burrito them up in a towel to minimize squirming.  While not cheap, I have found SEAVS pricing to be comparable to the other exotic vets I have been to.Despite the hour drive from DC, SEAVS is my go-to vet in the area for my chinchillas.
