I wrote this review only because I went to send them an email with pictures of my dog and clicked on yelp as a shortcut to pull up their website so I could get their email address and I was surprised to see them under four stars.  I just read some of the other reviews and not sure if the place I am going to is a new location/building that is different than the one being reviewed years ago.   I don't see anything wrong regarding cleanliness or condition of the building.   I also have no significant complaints about the staff.  They call to confirm, they always seem pleasant - they can sometimes be rushed, but they have never been rude or uncaring.  Dr. Dove is an excellent vet (esp if you have a bulldog) with a busy practice.  If you do 100 things right and one thing wrong...that person always can take that one thing wrong and hop on Yelp, I guess. The one review saying they didn't care about their dog I have never had reason to doubt these folks care about my dog.  Silliness... Was a customers since 2007, over the past 2 years this place has gone completely downhill. They over prescribed my dog steroids which resulted in a blockage that they did not "have time to treat". They refused to answer an emergency call from another vet to get his records... after of which we found out that my dog had been over prescribed medication for years. The receptionists are always quick to push you off the phone. When I called for the emergency, she referred someone else and hung up. My family and I will NEVER be returning. Read Less

So, I have had nothing but negative experiences with this vet. I really can't think of one good thing to say about them. I have a seven-year-old English Bulldog with allergies. We have tried many things for him, but finally settled on a diet, jam packed with vitamins and nutritional supplements, that we make ourselves. I am used to vets dismissing this, but of all the things we have tried - including all the medications they prescribe - this is the only thing we have done that works and keeps him healthy! I went to this vet because I thought they had a good understanding about bulldogs and they also offered the allergy testing that I knew Cooper needed. To be clear, we live in DC and this place is an hour away. We don't have a car here, so I rented a car to drive all the way out there. When I walked in, everything was in complete disarray and super dirty. The staff was rude and dismissive. There was no place for us to sit, so we stood awkwardly in the kitchen/makeshift office/ waiting room. We saw Dr. Kunze who was incredibly rude - which I would tolerate if she knew what she was talking about. At the time we saw her, our dog's allergies were at a minimum - very little flare ups or itchiness. But she suggested prednisone for him - STEROIDS! I have seen what this does to other dogs and no thank you! At the same time she dismissed the natural food we have him on and suggesting that we go with some kibble. I spent nearly $1k on the appointment and the allergy test, but after several weeks we had not received the results from the testing. The doctor also refuses to call me back - in fact no one does and they start emailing me instead. Via email, we asked to get a refill for his apoquel that we would only use if the flare ups got worse. Her office refilled it but charged me an excessive amount. I called them and asked them why they had refilled it for two months. I told them we only wanted one month, but I was met with some excuse about the woman who knows how to work the credit card machine being on vacation. In the meantime, the charges aren't reversed but the doctor emails me. I tell her about the confusion with the front desk and she says, well I will talk to them, but most likely "that's just what you are going to get." LOL. I reiterated that I had not authorized the charge and I would report it as fraudulent. Somehow. miraculously, the charges were reversed. I was ready to leave this be, but I am now asking for my dog's medical records and they are refusing to give them to me or respond to my emails.  Would not recommend this place. Read Less

Having a pup who was very sick and facing surgery for a pyromytra [apparently, unneeded] at a local Richmond VA vet....I made a desperation call to Dr. Dove to get a 2nd opinion. His nurse asked how long to make the trip. I said: Friday, 2:30pm already, heading into weekend rush hour DC traffic / 3 hours if I am lucky. A quick conference and Dr Dove and his staff said: BRING HER. It took just under 3 hours to get there....she went in at 5:30 pm and they all worked on her until 9:45 PM...on a Friday. Took my chronically ill 16-year-old cat there when I knew she was about to die. She has upper respiratory since she was a kitten and in her final days she couldn't breath easily or eat. I was barely holding it together and the vet said "it depend how much you love her and willing to fight" - terrible thing to say to a heart broken pet owner. That sweet kitty was expected to die as a kitten but my love kept her alive for 16 years! Over the years, I had taken her to at least 5 Vets in the area for any help with her upper respiratory. Always had hope and tried but this time I knew. I will never take another animal this one again!!! Read Less

I'm blown away by what a negative experience I had here because so many people have written such great reviews. We recently moved to the area and had not established care with a new vet yet. My diabetic dog was not feeling well so I called around and brought her here because they were used to working with in-tact females. I do not know what doctor saw us because she never introduced herself. I tried to explain what was going on as best I could with a three month old baby strapped to my chest but i know I was a little scattered brained from lack of sleep because our dog had been throwing up all night. Regardless, she took our case, seemed frustrated that I had consulted "Dr. Google" (which wasn't the case at all...I know fancy terminology because I'm a doctor too) and did blood work and x-rays. The blood work came back showing ketones in the urine (life threatening). The doctor told me not to worry about them, they were sure my dog felt poorly because she was constipated. They sold me "nutrient dense" wet food, and gave the dog a enema and sent us home. The next morning the dog had declined further, I called to consult the vet and asked if we should go to an emergency facility. She basically said "sure" like she still didn't think this was a serious case. It took two weeks of care at Artemis Emergency Vet to get my fur baby out of diabetic ketoacidosis and on the mend. We should have been sent to the emergency facility immediately. If I hadn't called the next morning and followed my gut my doggie would have died. Read Less

Dr. Jansons is treating my Bunnie dog for her digestive issues, and I cannot ask for a better doctor! My dog likes going to Companion, because she knows she is being looked after by competent doctors. My pets used to fight me when they went to 'another' vet, now I know why. The 'other' vet declaws cats and my pets sense animal cruelty at that practice. I have two declawed cats who were dumped because of post declaw life long medical problems, one has scurs, bone regrowth coming out of her paw pads which are painful and I will get them treated, and the other cat is psycho, does not purr or meow, bites to draw blood, hates hands, and wakes up sometimes hissing and growling in her sleep. For more info see the Paw Project, they are educating and legislating to ban declawing in the US. My wife and I have been using Companion for several years now.  I will say the first time I took one of our four dogs there I was put off by its appearance.  However once I stepped inside and was greeted with courteous and prompt staff, a vet that took as much time as was necessary (for me AND my dog), and the simple fact that I was able to get in so quickly for an appointment, I was hooked.  We've taken a German Shepherd and at least one of our Shiba Inus there.  Our oldest Shiba has had surgery there before with zero problems and sadly I had to schedule another one today.  I have no apprehensions leaving her in the care of the staff at Companion.I turned to Yelp the other day when I needed the phone number and saw the negative reviews.  I'm flabbergasted.  So much so that I had made a mental note to write a review pending the outcome of today's visit (wanted to make sure nothing changed).  I just left Companion thinking I was going to get a quick workout in before picking up the kids.  Instead I'm banging out this review.  I walked in and the house phone was ringing.  It was Companion telling me that I left my book there.  No problems, I said I'd be by later this evening to pick it up.  The phone rings again.  "Companion here...the doctor realized she lives around the corner from you and will drop the book off instead of having you come all the way out."  Seriously?  I've never had a vet care about my animals the way Companion seems to and certainly never gave me the feeling they'd go out of their way for ME.  There are vets off of Heathcote and another off of Sudley Manor.  Based on my experiences there before finding Companion and the first rate experienes I've had at Companion they'll have my dogs health in their hands as long as they are around.Lastly - I've never had sticker shock with my pets either.  I find that the cost of every visit and procedure isn't (or at least doesn't seem to be) inflated or outrageous and seems to be priced right.Huge thanks go out to them! I mean that the Doctor Frischer did not diagnose properly and when we took our cat in again she was lethargic and meowing so loudly. When again they could not find anything wrong they sent us on our way saying she seemed fine and was walking around. Yea right. when we picked her up that night she was meowing my husband said and I would bet that they never really looked at her properly. How could you leave a cat that cannot breathe right. WE had to take her to emergency vet in manassas and within 5 min doc said oh the test results said heart disease and her tongue was purple!!! what kind of doctor wouldnt see this in the first set of results and they never really looked at her and NO one called us that day to let us know what was going on..... ever nor any doctors assistants. I was appalled that our cat who is so sweet was left in a cage all day and just laid their meowing and too to make matters worse she couldnt meaow anymore she had lost her voice from calling out for help. Thank God for the animal hospital in manassas. they immediately put her in an oxygen tank. If this place is so good why didnt they do the same or tell us take her to emergency right now. And that the doctor didnt come in till 10 that morning so the poor thing was left from the time my husband dropped her off to when the doctor came in. What kind of emergency care is that ! Besides the lack of cleanliness and hygiene in the clinic its self; the staff lacks attention and training.  My English bulldog came home with a catheter still stuck in him.  Complete and total disregard for ensuring my dog was treated with the proper care.  Upon calling I am told it's no big deal by one of the condescending doctors.  First they forget a catheter, next they sew up a tool in your pet, and next your pet dies on the table because the staff lacks training, compassion and attention.   I recommend you visit another vet.  I went to a completely different vet to have the catheter removed. I will not go here after several visits with our older dog. It does seem like a run down place and should have expected rundown results. The building is in awful shape, there is no room for dogs to wait in, nothing to clean up after your dogs with when outside, the staff seems like they could care less sometimes, and the technology used for diagnosis is border line a joke. Never was able to see Dr. Dove either, so maybe this was our mistake.I took my dog there a few times for bleeding and a constant coughing. Due to the X-Ray machine being still film, and hard to read I guess we were told it was a collapsed trachea. His bleeding was just from an infection we were told as well. Turns out that was all WRONG! The positive thing they did for us was not send the X-Ray to the specialist in Leesburg like they promised, which sounds bad but the specialist was forced to then do his own. He can tell that his trachea was collapsed because of fluid, blood, and possibly the cancer throughout our dogs lungs and other areas. He said with what we were getting for a collapsed trachea he would not be coughing like he was. It's been months and I'm not blaming the VET, but for some of us our dogs are our children and their health should be taken more seriously. Also, the medicine we were getting filled by them every ten days wasn't being prescribed. Meaning they knew we needed it and made us come back to the office for it every time. It cost $30 there each time and when we were finally persistent enough to get a prescription it cost $6 at Rite Aid. The only reason I gave two stars is because Dr. Dove is supposedly one of the best, but it doesn't help you if you're not seeing him. In my case we did not and really now my dogs suffers due to a false diagnosis from a Dr. Dove associate. Nice sign for the business just wish more effort went into building a "nice" environment for the pets they care about. Good luck if you put your trust into them.ASK FOR A SECOND OPINION OR REFERRAL TO SOMEONE ELSE ON THE FIRST VISIT! Read Less

I've been taking my dogs to Companion for over three years now and have been boarding them there on occasion as well.   My primary contact has been Dr. Frisch and she's been great.  My little Chico developed diabetes and many other complications and Dr. Frisch was with us all the way with his care.  Unfortunately, it came time for him to be put to rest and Dr. Frisch took care of that for us too - as always a very sad time - she too was in tears.  I think it just gives you a feel for what the clinic is like - its like the old "country vet" in the suburbs.  They know you, your pet and your situation and they are sensitive to all.  I wouldn't hesitate to take my pet here if you're looking for a regular vet..... I've been taking my dogs here for a little over a year.  I have only seen Dr. Dove once and from what I could tell was fine.  I always see the other vet Dr. Frisch, and she's nice too.My problem with the place is they ALWAYS overbook and I end up waiting a very long time.  I've waited up to an hour there, while the tiny waiting area is full.  I hate that.  I was there last week, for routine vaccinations and had an appt at 11:30, well they were all at lunch!  The vet came down to talk to the receptionist and it was obvious she was eating.  Which is fine, but why do they make appts during lunch time???They also sometimes try to brush off your request for an appt, and tell you just to come in, I've made that mistake once, and waited for about an 1 1/2 hrs, never again.  I have some other small bones to pick like that they don't keep their records straight and that my male neutered dog is listed as a female spayed, and when you weigh them (after being requested to do so) and tell the receptionist the weight she doesn't record it, so his weight is list as 0.0.They are ok, but if I wasn't moving I would switch to a new vet, but since I am I am staying with them until then.  Also, I don't understand why they don't update the building.  It is very run down, and kind of falling apart.  The last time I went in there the molding was half broken off around the door frame as an example.  Seems to me they would try to make it look nice, which it definitely does not.  The first time my husband went with me there, he was like "are you kidding me? This is so ghetto" his words not mine. Overall, they are ok, but I would go somewhere else. Read Less

Don't let the run down shack like appearance of the office fool you.  I drove all the way in from Arlington to have my Great Dane bred here as they were the only breeding specialist between here and Virginia Beach.  When I pulled up at the clinic, I almost turned around an went home at the site of it, made worse by it being surrounded by brand new shopping centers.  At the time I was unaware that Dr Dove was a highly respected specialist all over the country. The nursing staff was fantastic and really kept this first time breeding mom in her place.  They kept me well informed, answered all my questions and soothed my nerves.  They handled my dog like the pros they are.If we ever go through this process again, we'll be coming back.  I highly recommend Companion Animal Clinic, it is worth the drive to Gainesville. I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Dove for several years, now. My dogs (and one cat!) are pets, but I also show and breed my dogs. At first, I just went for his Repro services, but I quickly switched my dogs to him full-time. I have had a great experience with this practice. Dr. Dove knows things about dogs that only years of hands-on experience can give you. He is excellent with both dogs and their humans. He definitely takes his time, and he has taught me a lot.If I call the office, I can usually get an answer right away. For routine questions, Brian, Cissy, and other knowlegable staff members are there to help. When I have needed a same-day appointment, Pam always works me in, somehow. I might have to wait a bit when I get there, but I will be seen the same day.If you breed, there is no other game in town, IMHO. Dr. Dove will save pups when others might lose them. Very responsive, with 24/7 on-call services for breeders.Because of the popularity of this practice, Dr. Dove can get very busy, especially if an emergency comes in. Over the past year, Dr. Dove has added Dr. Frisch to the practice to help with the workload. Good move. Dr. Frisch is very thorough, skilled and caring. Not sure what was going on with "Bulldog and the tail" issue in the other review, but I can share my years-long experience, having had my dogs (and cat!) checked and treated at Companion for a variety of things. I think people tend to report the negative more often than the positive, so I took some time to write this review.Hope this helps! Read Less

DR.DOVE is supposedly experienced with tail amputations on bulldogs. We researched him and drove over 2 hours to have the procedure done on our 3 year-old bulldog. He needed this procedure done due to his inverted tail and chronic infections. Instead of keeping him on antibiotics and wipes the rest of his life we had the procedure done. To make a long story short- The procedure was done incorrectly. Our bulldog started to lose function of his back legs due to this surgery because the infection grew and entered his spine and nerves internally from a pocket under the left-on piece of tail. We had to have corrective surgery done and its not even the fact of the money involved-its that when I tried numerous times to contact DR. DOVE, he never returned my phone calls or the certified letter I sent him. Some vet. Now my 3 year-old bulldog is partially paralyzed in his back legs. Read Less

Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Michele Price.  She literally saved our cat.  He has terrible allergies and would project green snot everywhere.  Lots of it--on beds, on walls, on chairs, on people--even on my husband's face and mouth...  We couldn't live like that any more.  After going to another vet in this practice (who has since moved) and several specialists to no avail, Dr. Price asked if I minded if she researched a few things while I was in the office.  She came up with two medications which have solved the problem!!!!!!  Even if it is just for now, we'll take it to save our magnificent cat.  With our other cat's check up, she told us what was needed without being pushy about it.  I'm so grateful and so pleased. Thank you again, Companion Animal Clinic for following your oath to protect animals and not harm them.Read Less

I called Companion Animal Clinic today hoping to get an appointment because they are one of the few veterinary hospitals in my area who treat small and exotic mammals (I live in Warrenton).  I was very taken aback by the unprofessionalism of the person on the phone when I called to make an appointment. She put me on hold right away, and when she came back she was rude.  She talked down to me and acted like I was horrible for asking for a same day appointment.  She sounded irritated and very loudly told me, "there are no appointments until Friday, ok?" Then hung up.   They made a horrible first impression and its really too bad because I will never know if they are a good clinic otherwise!  So instead, I took my business all the way to Leesburg.  First impressions definitely count!! Bad cat care DONT USE IF YOU HAVE EMERGENCYWe took our cat under stress to her as she couldnt breathe properly. They had us come in and blood tests and all showed nothing. So we took her home. Again she couldnt breathe properly and we took her in again. Again, they said oh we cant find anything wrong with her so nothing we can to... on that thurs barring she had this over the past weekend as well she the cat poor thing went thourgh 4 days of hell. At all costs dont use this place as they dont care. Please I am warning you... they dont know what they are doing Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

Read Less
