Dr Kenny Lucas and Dr Carol Garland are 2 of the most caring people you will ever meet. The front desk staff treat you like friends and family. We've been going there for years. When our beloved dog died late last year I was truly blown away by their concern and compassion. And when our new dog had an emergency they were right there for us. I took my dogs to SGAC for many years and was happy with their service and treatment.  However, I had an emergency with my dog (during a weekday) and when I called to make an appointment same day, I was told there would be a $85 additional fee for the unscheduled visit. I was really put off by that. In fact I consider it extortion. I mean really, when humans are sick and need to see a doctor, their offices do not charge  additional fees for same day visit.  I called Wellseley Animal Hospital that day and they worked me in - guess what - no $85 additional fee for a same day visit.  I will never go back to SGAC nor would I ever recommend them to anyone. I was debating on which animal hospital to go to for my new dog Shelby. I am glad I gave this one a try because the staff was very polite and friendly and were very welcoming and also you could tell, they loved animals. What a disappointment!  Scheduled my pup's NP apt with Dr. Elliott two weeks before. Was so excited to start a relationship with a vet who was so recommended by many friends but it was not to be. Got there 2 minutes late--appt was at 9:40 am.  Had a difficult time finding the location in the strip shopping center.  Was called the day before saying it would be helpful if we could be there 10 minutes in advance to do paperwork--did not say we would be rescheduled if we were not 10 minutes early--why have a scheduled appt? Had already filled out all the online paperwork and had all of pup's records.  Front desk said Dr. Elliott said we would have to reschedule cuz we were late--really????? Read Less

Dr. Lucas is the best! My dog was throwing up blood and our regular vet was so busy so we came here. Dr.Lucas took her back right away and was so nice that we switched vets for good! It's out of my way but the care the staff have for the animals can't be beat! Read Less

There is no better team to take care of your pets! I will recommend Shady Grove Animal Clinic to anyone I meet. Over the past 6+ years they took care of my babies. I don't know quite where to begin. We have been taking our 3 children to Shady Grove Animal Clinic when they opened in 2001. We see Dr. Lori Elliott. We TRUST HER WITH THE LIFE of our children. She is educated, a true professional, a straight shooter, sympathetic, by far the best vet I have ever had and Is so remarkable at her job that I thank God I found her. Dr. Elliott's main top priority is making sure the quality of life of your child is the best possible. She always has time for us and I know she loves our babies. For a few years we left VA to move to CA and our oldest child sadly got cancer. My vet in CA said it was time. I told them NOT to do anything until they sent the x-rays and documentation to Dr. Elliott. Dr. Elliott took the time to review all and called me to tell me that she agreed with diagnosis. That was all I needed to hear. About a year ago we moved back to VA for many reasons one of which was being able to have Dr. Elliott care for our other 2 babies which she has known and cared for their whole life. She recognized them immediately and them her. Where do u find that now a days??  I can't say enough about her. We all love her and trust her so much. I could never imagine having someone else care for them. She truly is THE BEST. Recently we had an emergency and Dr. Elliott was away on vacation (which I feel sure was well needed and deserved). We saw Dr. Kenny Lucas and he was wonderful as well. In regard to the front and back office staff they are the BEST especially Yvonne. She has had to deal with me for YEARS crying, panicked, demanding, and every other possible emotion one can have in regard to your child. They all always are eager to help, show compassion and have an excellent calming demeanor even at the worst of times. I want to tell you of the Huge heart and community involvement of Dr Lori Elliot . She gives back to our community here in Goochland with her work at the Goochland Animal Shelter. I was a total stranger she crossed paths with late in a day she had devoted to adminstering vaccines at a Benefit Rabies Vacination Clinic for the Goochland Public Shelter. I was a traveling pet owner distraught over my missing dog. She offered to help me look for him and reached out to the connections she has to spread the word . Thankfully my " indy" came home unharmed after several nights of worry. I believe she's got a heart of gold and probably demands that from those around her. I'll be calling her my vet from now on. My husband and I had to say goodbye to our little dachshund Luigi last year. He unfortunately had several strokes. Shady Grove cared for him during his final days and came to our home to make his trip over the rainbow bridge easier. They were so kind and caring taking time with us, ensuring we got a paw print, a hair clipping and even looked at old photos of our little man with us when we had to say goodbye. They planted a tree in his honor and sent us several cards with condolences. After such a caring experience I can not imagine taking my new adopted Doxie anywhere else. Read Less

Dr. Lucas is the best veterinarian I've been to.  He is patient and walks you through all options, explaining them in a way that allows you to make an informed decision.  He genuinely loves helping animals and seems to go out of his way to ensure the best care possible for all of his patients.  He's awesome!  In addition, the staff as a whole at Shady Grove are so friendly, and they are great with animals.  My golden retriever is timid by nature, but they have a way of making her feel at ease every time we're there. My first experience here was a positive one. I woke up one morning to my elderly asthmatic cat having a great deal of difficulty breathing. She's usually huffing a little more than a normal cat because of her condition, but she was clearly struggling and open-mouth breathing. I called my usual vet and was told there were no openings until Monday. Of all the other animal hospitals in the area I called, Shady Grove was the only one that recognized the situation as serious and told me to come over right away. They wasted no time bringing my cat into the exam room as soon as I showed up, and they took very good care of her. She was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and was given the appropriate meds. We set up a follow-up appointment and we left with home care instructions. She's clearly feeling much better now. She's even breathing better than she was before the respiratory infection. I couldn't be a happier. I would highly recommended Shady Grove to anyone who cares about their pet! Read Less

I had to put Daisy, my sweetest, most loyal friend and companion to sleep on 4/30. This was without a doubt the most difficult and heart wrenching decision I ever had to make. I just want to give a sincere thank you from the bottom of my heart to Dr. Garland. She not only assured me that I was making the right decision but she also gave me the strength I desperately needed to follow through with that decision. Dr. Garland showed such a tremendous level of professionalism while also extending genuine love, support and comfort. Words can never express the overwhelming gratitude I have for Shady Grove Animal Clinic, Dr. Lori Elliott and the entire staff. They are truly passionate about our pets and the best Veterinary Clinic in the area. We just got a golden retriever and couldn't be happier with our choice of veterinarians! The office staff are friendly and helpful, Dr. Garland was great, their fees are extremely reasonable, the hours are good, and they even called the day after our visit to see how our puppy was doing!
