Do NOT take your animal here if they have any difficulty with vets.  My dog who is adopted has always had trouble with vets giving him shots, so I typically muzzle him there.  All he ever does is growl but just to be safe, well that is until I brought him here.  They told me on the phone before the appointment that they had a muzzle they DO NOT have a muzzle they literally tied my dogs mouth shut with a rope - twice during this appointment.  I had unfortunately shown up late so my husband was there for the first one and I didn't really it had already happened once so of course the second time they went to do it he went ballistic - they had to take him "in the back" to get it on no idea what they did to him back there but he came out shaking profusely with a bleeding lip from the rope tie.  Then we tried to leave the practice and go some where else and they literally will not give us records by any means then coming back into this horrible place.... seriously if you care about your animals at all go somewhere else Read Less

We have a 15 year old Coton De Tulear...his name is Cooper. Most recently he became a patient of Dr Adams as his health was deteriorating and she was highly recommended to us. Our lives would have been the better if only we had known about her many years ago and from the beginning. Dr Adams is an amazing most incredible person and vet. The best in our opinion in all of Northern VA. Sadly Cooper has an auto immune disease that he's had since he was 5 and unfortunately has had the need to see many different vets in the area over the years. Dr Adams is by far the most thorough, compassionate and smartest one of them all. She promptly follows through on calls...she truly cares for the animals. It's extremely obvious! I literally cried during his 1st visit and examination. The way she treated him with respect...the way she spoke to him and explained everything to him. Trust me...he responded in accordance as normally with other vets he's all worked up with anxiety. But not with Dr Adams. Dr Adams is extremely Thorough and Smart. Every single medical advice that she has recommended has been correct and helpful. We truly felt that Cooper was in his last days on this earth...he has now regained his energy and eating again. He has moments of running around like a little puppy. Cooper is our family member...you can imagine the enormous gratitude that we have to Dr Adams and her staff. Sarah one of her techs is amazing and wonderful has gone above and beyond to help us. The entire staff is amazing and wonderful and extremely helpful. We will recommend Dr Adams and her staff to everyone that we know. We will be forever grateful for everything that they have done to give our little Cooper his health and energy back...and hopefully a few more yrs with us. Thank You Dr Adams, Sarah and Adams Mill Veterinary Staff...with all of our heart...We Thank You!! Read Less

I realize my review is somewhat at odds with the other reviews and everyone seems to give Dr. Adams great marks-- and maybe I would feel differently had I seen Dr. Adams - but I didn't and here was my experience-- Unclean, poorly trained staff and vet.  I am new in town and took my cat in to establish care and evaluate her teeth since she has had issues in the past.  First, the place smells of mold. Now look-- I don't expect a vet clinic to be odor free given the patients, but mold has no place in a medical facility.  The front desk staff acted like it was too much work to copy my cat's medical records.  Also-- they don't have email so I couldn't send medical records or X-rays before the appointment.  But the worst was yet to come. The vet - Dr. Gross I believe is what she mumbled when she came in --spent no time establishing a relationship with the cat and appeared apprehensive.  The vet assistant came in and elbowed me out of the way to hold my cat down so the vet could examine her. First- the cat is docile --I'm not saying that because it's "my cat"-- I'm saying it because I have years of experience with animals.  She did not need to be aggressively held down. That type of over-aggressive handling makes an animal even more anxious and more likely to bite or scratch. Second, I was a vet tech for years in college and I know how to hold an animal-- and this assistant was man handling my 10 pound cat completely unnecessarily.  There were times as a vet tech that I had to be fairly firm with animal holds for the safety of both the vet and the animal-- but this was not that type of situation.  I told the vet I had been a vet tech and would prefer to hold the cat but the assistant refused to relinquish the death grip she had on the cat and the vet was unassertive and appeared uneasy and frightened of the cat and kept repeating over and over that she has been bitten before. In the four years I was a vet tech- I never was bitten by an animal.  I attribute 80% of that to basic skill in treating animals and reading their body language and the remaining 20% to luck-- cause if you work with animals long enough-- you will probably get bitten and scratched-- it's the nature of the business.  However, this cat is very docile, was being aggressively and too tightly held by the assistant and the vet was visibly scared of getting near the cats mouth or correcting the assistant.  To say she did a cursory exam of the cat's teeth, would be an overstatement.  She barely looked in the mouth because she didn't want to get near the cat to open the mouth or pull the lips back and then said everything looked fine.  Having participated in at least a hundred animal dental exams-- I can definitively say there was no way she could have competently evaluates the cats teeth, nor had she seen the palate or roof of the mouth or tongue before declaring the cat all well.  Having examined the cat at home, I know the cat likely is due for a cleaning to prevent further tooth loss and has some gingavitis starting.  At this point I had had enough of the frightened vet and overly aggressive assistant and told them to stop.  I grabbed my traumatized cat and left.  That was a total exercise in incompetence, in my opinion.  I would not recommend taking your animal here. It's a rare pleasure to find as competent, capable, knowledgeable, and caring a veterinarian as Dr. Adams in family pet practice. As one might expect, her associates and staff adhere to the same commendably high standards of care, concern, and cooperation for pet and owner alike . Dr. Adams experience and attention to individual patient detail, coupled with highly-focused diagnostic skills, treatment alternatives analysis and explanation, polished surgical skills, and patient advocacy during referrals has provided my English Setter Rudy a new lease on life on more than one occasion. While a dog may not get the 9 lives of a cat, Dr. Adams has already afforded Rudy a few more than nature intended. She is, in few words, "Simply the Best." Read Less

We live in the heart of Dupont Circle. There are any number of vets within less than 2 miles of us. So, that we drive the 30-45 minutes to Adams Mill should speak volumes for how much we believe in them. Dogs, dogs, dogs.  Like most area vets Adams Mill Vet Hospital seems to cater to dogs.  95% of the wall art in the waiting area was dogs and I should have figured it out and left while we waited there 20 min after our appointment, or while we waited another 15 in the exam room.  Telling myself to be patient, I regrettably ended up watching the most difficult vet exam my cat has ever had.  Vets here are still using glass thermometers that go you-know-where and require about a minute to get a reading, which makes no sense considering what they charge for appointments.  Techs were shy about restraining the cat, and after an hour the cat was hissing (hey, I was pissed too) so they tried to muzzle him... unsuccessfully.  That's where I cut it off.  I don't recommend taking cats here-- worst vet experience mine has ever had, after seeing vets in several states for 10 years.  Really hope they use the exam fee I paid to buy faster digital thermometers so my visit wasn't a total waste.  I can not recommend taking conscious cats to this veterinary hospital outside of a desperate emergency, and if such a need should arise Clocktower Animal Hospital about 8 mi away has better hours.  Good luck finding a vet in the suburbs, cat people. Best vet in the DC area - without a shadow of a doubt. I have known Dr. Adams and Dr. Nelson for over 15 years, and they have always been compassionate, thorough, and nothing short of amazing. I originally found them after a friend recommended them when my parents Golden had "hot spots" that their vet couldn't seem to get treated after 3-4 weeks...within 5 minutes with Dr. Adams it was determined that these "hot spots" were actually mange!  Since then I've taken my own dog (my avatar) there from when I adopted him at 4 months to when they diagnosed him with cancer 2 years ago (at the age of 12), and I had to put him to sleep. I could not have made it through is cancer diagnosis without them. They were so patient and kind, and I knew that they cared about my dog and me as well. They made a very difficult situation much more comfortable.Over the years I've had to call them at all times of the day or night, and I've always received a fast response. They are always thorough and never rush through an appointment. They always take the time to explain things to you. They do this because they genuinely care about the well being of animals.I can't recommend them enough! Read Less

Moving to the area from D.C. (we were clients at Union Vet Clinic on Capitol Hill), we needed a new doc for our darling dog.Enter Adams Mill Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Nelson. I called on Wednesday and got an appointment on Saturday (weekend and evening hours are a major plus). Dr. Nelson spent a good half hour with Goldie. It was the most extensive examination she's ever had. We learned things about our dog that we never knew: she has a mild heart murmur, a misaligned bite, and is likely a year or two younger than her shelter rap-sheet indicates. We talked weight, diet, dental care, coat, and behavior. She was beyond thorough. She asked lots of questions and made sure all of ours were answered. My only criticism is that we had to wait past our appointment time to be seen. But witnessing first hand the time and care they give each animal, it's understandable. I don't mind waiting if I know I'm not going to be rushed out the door.Kudos to Dr. Nelson and the AMVH team. Read Less

My dog, Missy, met the Adams Mill team at what turned out to be the end of her life. After dealing with ""so-so"" vets for decades, I moved to Reston and chose these folk, based on reviews and price comparisons. I found them to be highly skilled, very compassionate, and more supportive than I could ever have imagined. Missy was diagnosed quickly and accurately, I was referred to equally skilled specialists for testing and consultation, and they made many follow-up calls to me, asking how she was doing, if I had questions, and offering support in any way they could. In the aggregate, they were on the phone with me for hours. No money involved, just a genuine concern for Missy...and me. Pursued options with specialists, but the cancer was too advanced, and Adams Mill administered the final shot. Well...business dealings over, right? Not quite, they followed-up afterwards to ask how I was doing and see if I had any unanswered questions. These are remarkably dedicated professionals, and my dog could not possibly have had better care. I highly recommend them. Read Less

After much internet-searching, and many word-of-mouth recommendations, I finally found my animals new home.Adams Mill understood the necessity of getting my dog in quickly, because he had an ear infection that would not go away. He was a new dog, so Dr. Nelson took the time on Saturday to sit down with Remington and I, and allow Remi to feel secure. Two hours later, Remington (a large GSD) had allowed us to get a swab of his very sensitive ears, and was relaxed in Dr. Nelson's presence. The sheer volume of time Dr Nelson took in order to make Remington feel safe made me realize how much they care for their patients. He was not held down, muzzled, or backed into a corner. Instead he was petted, belly rubbed, and treated to a couple snacks. Despite having a very stubborn infection, Remington is happy to visit Adams Mill. The staff are all very caring, happy to see the animals, and willing to work with those of us who have unpredictable and hard to work with schedules.Adams Mill offers to clip your animals nails for free with each visit, and encourages "social visits" - where your animal comes into the Vet, gets petted, gets treats, and leaves. The "social visits" encourage a safe-haven feeling for your animals, rather than the "this is where scary things happen!" feeling.I highly recommend Adams Mill Veterinary Hospital to anyone with animals, because having a good vet means happy and healthy animals.
