We've lived in McLean 40+ years and for many years used another animal hospital for our pets.  For multiple reasons, we changed to McLean Animal Hospital more than 10 years ago and have been very happy with the veterinarians (esp. Dr. Jeb Sexton) as well as the auxiliary staff.  This week our senior dog was at end of life.  We were so grateful to Dr. Jeb for coming to our home and gently easing our sweet girl over the Rainbow Bridge.  No one could have been more loving or tender with our senior dog, and us, as well as with our other dog who was losing her companion.   We will continue bringing our pets to McLean Animal Hospital and recommend them highly. We needed to take our Morkie, named Riley, to the vets to get his monthly allergy shot. We appreciate the fact that they don't take Riley in a back room somewhere, but they administer the shot directly in front of us in one of the examination rooms. We have been seeing the various doctors at McLean animal hospital for the past year now and we are very pleased. Read Less

I've been going to McLean Animal Hospital for 20+ years. The two chihuahua's that i've owned in that time have seen the following doctors for treatments and surgeries: Dr. Sexton, Dr. Stork, Dr. Salkeld, and Dr. Hodgdon. And all of these doctors have been nothing but amazing on each and every visit. All of them take their time with you to calm any fears, answer any questions, or even give you a shoulder to cry on when you have to say goodbye. My chihuahuas prefer(ed) female vets and during the last few months of my former dogs life, Dr. Salked and Dr. Hodgdon were always available 24-7 to answer my questions, concerns etc and honestly acted like my friends throughout the entire traumatic process. I cannot thank both of them enough for what they did for me and my little fur-baby to ensure that she lived her last few months the best she could. If you love your little fur-babies as much as i do and want to give them the best honest care possible, bring them to one of the doctors above at Mclean Animal Hospital. Read Less

My family has been going to McLean Animal Hospital for over 30 years. My parents started seeing Dr. Jack Sexton when they got a Chow Chow in the mid-1980s. They continued to see him when they moved to Sterling, and even after she passed away, they continued to bring their next dog to McLean Animal Hospital. Knowing how much they loved Dr. Sexton, I also chose to take my first dog to him when I got her in 2007. I still drive over 30 minutes each way to bring my 11yr old and 2 yr old dogs to see Dr. Jack Sexton because he is so genuine and kind and really cares about his patients. He helped my parents make informed and reasonable decisions regarding both their dogs' health and he has been just as incredible with my two dogs. I am so grateful to have him and the entire staff caring for my pups. I will truly miss him when we move cross-country! Read Less

I needed to find a nearby animal practice to help. After calling an in-home service and realizing they were too busy as well as some other nearby vets, McLean seemed like the best option. The entire team was kind and extremely professional.  I called them on my way and a team of dedicated vet staff came out to meet me at my car.  Islam, the vet tech carried the dog from my car and within minutes, we were with Dr. Norway who administered a sedative and and the quick final injection. This vet nickels and dimes the customers every chance they get. Beware the tests, treatments, meds etc. that  cost $25 here, $30 there. When they put our dog down, they sent us a bill for $473, without warning us that it cost over $250 to cremate the dog. It didn't matter that I was in tears in the euthanasia room in the moments when I should have requested a price quote. According to this vet, it was my job to ask for a specific price if I wanted to know the cost of our options. Had I been quoted the cost of the cremation in advance, I definitely would have chosen something else for the dog's remains, but when I received the bill and said as much,  they were unmoved and unapologetic. The practice owner would not budge, nor would he speak to me. All communication was through staff. The message: Sorry about your dog. Pay up.They are getting my $473 dollars, but not a dime more. They value money over the customer. Doesn't matter how loyal you've been to them for however many years. At McLean Animal Hospital, $266 is worth more than the families that trust them with the lives of their pets. Good thing my two favorite doctors quit. Now I have somewhere else to go. Read Less

Over the years we have brought many cats to McLean Animal Hospital. We used to have Dr. Wesson as our vet and loved him, his kindness, the loving manner he had with our cats and how caring and conscientious he always was dealing with us. All that time I would have rated MAH a 5 star hospital. Recently we met Dr. Salkeld and were again very pleased, would have rated her and our visit a 5 star as well. Today's visit, however, I rate a 1 star, not because of the friendly and always busy front desk, they are always great, and not because of the L.V.T. Magersa, he was diligent, hard working and kind and tried to help us but because of Dr. Catherine Malehorn who only rated 1 star. I called early this afternoon and spoke to a nice gentleman at the front desk and told him my male cat was having problems urinating. He told me to bring him in. He told me of the extra charge for the Sunday Emergency fee, and warned me that if my cat began to vomit I should rush him in because time was of the essence. He began vomiting I rushed him in. We were rushed in to an examining room, Dr. Malehorn came in, took the cat to the back, came in talking to me about x-rays, that she was worried that he had a possible tumor, etc... When I pointed out to her that this was not the first time this had happened to him, that Dr. Wesson had treated him before for this, that it had been an UTI with crystals present, she excused herself that she was busy, hadn't looked at the chart and left again. Then she came back and said they would need a bunch of test before they could sedate and catherize the cat. When I asked if the bloodwork and urinalysis could be sent out because I knew in house cost a lot more and I was really strapped for cash. She said no, she couldn't unblock him until she had the results of the blood test and that his bladder was huge and the problem was it was so full it could burst and result in his death. That if I had problems with money she would send someone in to talk to me about my options. That is when we met Magersa, LVT, he worked with me trying to bring the cost down from a 3 day stay of over $3000 to doing the procedure and taking our baby home which still cost $1000. He was very caring and tried his best but we just couldn't get to the point where I could find enough money to pay for this. At this point we had already been there almost 3 hours and our baby in the back room somewhere. Magersa went to try to talk to someone about what kind of payment plan they might accept, only to come back with a no. We asked to see our kitty. We were horrified to find that they had removed him from his warm, towel filled comfy soft carrier and left him in this cold, empty metal cage. Our baby was alone, huddled in a corner, terrified, his bladder just as full as 2.5 hours earlier. When we concluded that we couldn't afford the sedation and catherization. Magersa told me that they would insert a needle in his bladder and at least relieve him of the excess urine, a procedure called cystocentesis. To give him some relief from his pain. And tomorrow I would have to find another solution. Dr. Malehorn, never came to see me, didn't ever speak to me. So she sent me on my way almost 3 hours later, having done a procedure to give my cat some relief that she could've given him 5 minutes after we walked in when she told me that he was in danger of his bladder rupturing which would've caused his death. She had no pity towards him. I believe she behaved like he was a cash cow. I found her behavior deplorable. This is the way a doctor values her clients, both animals and people? McLean Animal Hospital needs to be better than this. I'm very disappointed in this doctor and that McLean Animal Hospital condones her behavior. Read Less

About a month ago, my deaf Dalmatian had three bad nights in a row due to her arthritis, crying non stop and couldn't lay down in any position without yelping in pain. :-( So, I took her to McLean Animal Hospital (our first time ever since we moved to McLean), and I was beyond impressed with how the place is ran. As a dog mom, I, of course, am paranoid of how they will treat my deaf dog, however, after meeting Dr. Malehorn, I am so glad to have her as Molly's primary veterinarian and she knew what to do and how to help Molly cope with her arthritis. After receiving the new medication, Molly is now a completely different dog, she no longer walks slow in pain, used to not being able to run and was afraid to climb on the stairs. Now? She runs like a playful puppy, can climb up and down the stairs, and even walks at a normal pace without any pain. Thank you for giving Molly a chance to live comfortably in her golden years! I am just so happy to see Molly happy and pain free, and am still mind blown by how she is running and playing around. Read Less

Earlier this week I took my 3 year old Boston Terrier here for an emergency appointment. I had called his usual veterinarian office/animal hospital who were unable to see him until the following afternoon, however the situation seemed a bit urgent. My dog, Sam, had lost 2lbs in 6 days (starting at a relatively small 25lbs) was refusing walk/move, eat, drink, and was drooling excessively. McLean Animal Hospital saw him within the hour. The vet who saw my dog (Katie Malehorn) was wonderful. She took her time examining him, and noted all of his clinical history that I could offer. She stated that even though she had never met Sam before he was acting very out of sorts and abnormal. She ordered what I would consider to be appropriate tests for the situation to include complete blood counts and chemistry panels, also taking into account that he had had a vaccination update as well as lab work 6 days prior. She went through an extensive differential with me as to what my dogs issues may be, and explained all the possible diagnostic and treatment options. After a few days of antibiotic therapy and ample hydration Sam is back to normal. It is extremely frightening when a our furry family members get sick, and putting trust in a stranger to take care of them is just as frightening, but I am happy that Sam ended up here and is recovered. The only thing that stood out to me as a negative was that while I was sitting around waiting to hear news on Sam much of the staff was goofing off loudly amongst themselves at the desk, cracking some distasteful jokes, and making fun of another patron who was being a little particular over some dog food she had been seeking out. While I understand joking and getting through the work day I certainly don't do that in front of my patients, and wouldn't condone staff acting in such a manner either as it is just unprofessional. Our 10 and 11 year old dogs, a Bichon and a terrier mix, have been cared for by McLean Animal Hospital since we adopted them as puppies. We ask for Dr. Kate Salkeld who has been wonderful to work with, from my perspective (dog nanny), and from the perspective of my adult daughter who owns the dogs for which we care. Our only negative experience was the grooming of our Bichon who was returned to us with bleeding, shaved ears. This happened another time with a highly reputable groomer of terriers and other small dogs. After complaining to the professional groomer, I received verbal abuse, and was still expected to pay the bill. McLean Animal Hospital, on the other hand, treated the ears without charge, including antibiotic and a follow up visit, and did not charge for the grooming, after I asked for a reimbursement. Care was provided by the head veterinarian, who also recommended Dr. Salkeld as a doctor who would be there for us long term (and she has!). He also apologized. Although I have never returned to MAH for grooming (try Fur Factory in Reston), I trust McLean Animal Hospital with health care. For boarding more than one night, I choose Great Falls Boarding. For ACL surgery, with an overnight stay, we chose SouthPaws, an emergency care facility that is open 24 hours and has more highly trained staff on the over night shift. For other emergencies, we have been happy enough with a more expensive facility in Vienna, the Hope Center. You can't go wrong with McLean Animal Hospital, and if, for some reason you have a bad experience, they will make it right. Buy your medications at the vet -- be sure they are fresh.Read Less

I tried to complain directly to McLean Animal Hospital (MAH). However, when I called a week ago on August 15 at around 5:30pm I was told that the person in question stepped out and would call me back. No one has so I am complaining online.I brought my dog to MAH since 2009. Our experience was always good, but my dog was pretty healthy. When she really was sick and needed professional treatment, MAH made medical and administrative mistakes that caused the dog some pain, cost me heartache, cost me money and delayed a diagnosis by two weeks, when I went elsewhere. The troubles can be divided into two types - medical and administrative. There were many administrative failures and only one medical one, but the medical failure is more serious so I'll start there. My dog has cancer. Specifically, she has a tumor in her abdomen.  MAH conducted not one but two biopsies and ultrasounds by at least two vets to try  and get a sample to tell what was wrong. They could not get a useable sample. Every sample collected was not enough to actually identify the tumor type or even confirm that it is a tumor. MAH charged 1,300 dollars for this and delayed diagnosis and treatment by two weeks. The new vet got usable samples the first time, took less time, and charged me less to do it.MAH also has administrative problems. Some are annoying, but small.  Some are bigger. While waiting for the second failed biopsy results, I asked MAH to please be quick as I was scheduled to leave the next Saturday for work and I needed to know if I could go. They said to expect results by Wednesday, but that I could call myself on Tuesday to check if they had them then. Based on this, I told my director that I might have to delay my trip and would tell him by Wednesday. On Tuesday,  when I called Ryan told me that the test was done, that all they needed was for the pathologist would write it up and I'd have it that day or the next.On Wednesday, when I called Islam told me that the test wasn't done yet but they asked the lab to hurry given my travel problem and they would have an answer that day or the next.  I had to tell my director I still didn't know what i was doing next week.On Thursday, after multiple calls from me, Dr. Anderson said nothing had happened but that he had sent the lab an email asking them to do it that day and that they should have a result later that day or the next. I told him that I was getting a different story every time about talking to the lab. He responded that he had asked now and more could not be done.On Friday I waited all day and finally called looking for an update at 5:30pm, I was told then that they had results, and had for "a few hours," but Dr. Anderson was too busy that day to call and tell me. I asked for any other vet to call me as I needed to know about my flight the next morning. One did, a woman, although I missed her name. She told me that the lab said that the sample wasn't good enough and that they would try another slide. At this point I grew frustrated and asked why no one could call me for hours even to tell me that they had results that required a re-test when they knew that i was expected to leave the country the next morning. She said that Dr. Anderson was too busy all day to call me and tell me that they didn't have useful results. I said that one of the many other vets could. I admit that I was pretty unhappy and my voice sounded it. She didn't like this and got angry, telling me that the vets were all too busy, that there were many other people wanting lab results, that i wasn't important as I thought I was (!) and that I'd have to be patient until someone had time to call me.  At this point she was yelling and I was pretty mad so I hung up.I then called and asked to file a complaint. I was told someone would call me back. That was a week ago. Fifteen minutes after the female vet was so angry and rude, Dr. Anderson called. He did not address my complaint request, but had found time to call about the lab tests. He said that the lab had also found the time to try that second slide and that the results were also inconclusive.  He seemed to think that i should be happy that he and the lab had such a quick response time. After a week of several daily calls begging for action, the fact that they could move when they decided that they really wanted to did not make me feel better.Learning from the new vet that the main tumor is so easy to find and to biopsy, and that I put my dog through unneeded stress, paid an unneeded $1300, and needlessly looked bad at work, I feel worse. We have been going to McLean Animal Hospital for almost two decades and the vets and staff have been unfailingly professional, knowledgeable, and kind. They have always been flexible in trying to make sure we are able to get an appointment on short notice. We are especially fond of Dr. Stork but the other vets exhibit similar characteristics, combining specialized knowledge with hands-on diagnosis. They showed great sensitivity and compassion when we had to put to sleep our golden and made a donation to a vet training university hospital in memoriam. We highly recommend this practice. It may be more expensive but it's worth peace of mind for us. Read Less

My dog absolutely loves coming here, which is odd as pets usually do not like their vet visits! Dr. Salkeld is very gentle with Timber (who is a big scaredy-dog) which makes me feel better when I take him in. The front office staff are helpful and professional as well. Their vet services may cost a bit more, but you are paying for quality and honesty. These guys are the best in the area. Read Less

I have been through several cats in the past 25 years here and can't say enough good things about this place. They are all humane people who are great at taking care of owners and pets! Right now I am working on a difficult matter with my cat and the vet checks in regularly by phone to see how things are going (Thank you Dr. Norway!). This is not going to have a happy ending but I am partnering with a group of individuals that are making it as dignified and comfortable - and practical as possible. She was even going to help me find inexpensive source of needles and syringes. Anyway, they are as great as you can hope for in terms of brilliance, kindness, and common sense. Read Less

Read Less
