I've been to several vets who supposedly specialize in exotics and avian medicine. I spent over $2000 on my Amazon parrot and 3 vets could not get results. I made an appointment with Winterfield after I found April Rice's name on an avian forum. She was very good with Taylor and knowledgeable about the sinus and air sac problem he was having. She really impressed me as someone who knew about avian medicine. She took her time and explained several options for treatment. Taylor is making an improvement on the medicine and she wants a follow up in one month. Most other vets want to follow up every week or two because parrots generate a lot of revenue for their business. If April Rice gets Taylor healthy, I plan on giving her 4 more patients - I have 3 Amazon and 2 African Gray parrots. The charges were very reasonable compared to what most vets charge for birds. Very convenient location for the Salisbury neighborhood. I wouldn't recommend if your fur child is easily stressed/very anxious. My dog, a min pin mix, gets super anxious and shakes around people he doesn't know.
As a puppy and up until about a year old my dog was "okay" with going to the vet. We had gone to the clinic at Petsmart and the SPCA for neutering and he was fine. He was noticeably nervous but on a normal level for a dog at a vets office.
A little over a year ago, Hoodie was dropped off for routine vaccinations at.Winterfield vet. I didn't stay with him because I'd figured he would be fine like he had been at previous visits with other vets. Also my mom said they usually don't let you go back with your dog. After getting him home I noticed his eyes were squinty, and hemorrhaged - I called and they said it was probably from all the stress he had been under during the visit. Apparently they had to put him in a muzzle to keep him from biting! This was a shock to me because at previous vet appointments he was nervous but not at that level. For 2 days after the visit he was very quiet - hiding under tables, ears pulled back and squinty-eyed like he had been crying.
I brought Hoodie back for a nail clip a few months later. They asked me to put a muzzle on him the waiting room. Then they took him to the back while I stayed in the waiting room. He was very obviously nervous and I think he would have preferred me to stay with him but they didn't offer to let me go back with him. He was squinty eyed when he got home but not nearly as bad as the first visit.
His most recent round of vaccines (January) was done at our new "low stress" vet office in Charleston. I held his head and reassured him with my voice during the exam and shots. He did great and came home very happy and normal.
My mom took Hoodie back to Midlothian because I was going to be traveling and didn't want to board him here in Charleston. He needed a booster distemper shot within 3 weeks of the first round. It was very easy to schedule an appointment with Winterfield vet. They had a lot of same day availability! Awesome! I explained to the receptionist he just needed the booster - she said she would schedule a vet tech to do it.
My mom brought Hoodie into Winterfield Veterinary and at first the office didn't want to do the shots without doing an exam and also another rabies vaccine. My mom told them he had just gotten an exam less than a month ago and he had his rabies shot (in the vet records sent over by Charleston) and we just needed the shot. Anyway, they didn't want to do it and my mom didn't want to pay a small fortune for an entire exam and things that weren't necessary because they were literally just done at another vets office. My mom also knows how stressed Hoodie was in the past and didn't want his eyes to bug out. She left the office and went home.
I think they realized their mistake and called her back and said they would just go ahead and just do the shot. They let my mom hold him for the shot. In and out it was done.
Pros: Easy to schedule an appointment, convenient location
Cons: Not good for high stress animals, not transparent with costs (my new vet gives exact price of what things will cost BEFORE hand, explains what's necessary/unnecessary, and reviews everything with you inside the exam room instead of in front of everyone in the reception room), They come off as a little "judgey" about you if you opt to not get something done, They also want you to come in every 6 months for wellness exams - to me thats an obvious rip off... Meet Sam, he was a small kitten that was in the parking lot of a restaurant which also happens to be in the same parking lot where Winterfield vet hospital is, my husband and I were coming out of the restaurant and saw this little guy and couldn't get to him before he ran off. Two days later we took one of our other for pets in for her annual check up and mentioned the little guy that we saw in the parking lot. Dr. White said "oh, we have him, we got him before the cold rain set in. He's been neutered has shots and he's in the back if you want to meet him." The rest is history. We now have a new addition to our menagerie of fur babies. What I'm trying to say is they love our pets as much as we love our pets, and that's the kind of veterinary you want in your Rolodex. As a former Vet Tech I am extremely picky about who my kids (dogs) see. In the past I have had some places be very mill like and treat the pets as if they were just animals. I loved that both of the vets I have seen, yesterday Dr. Rice, both have treated Burnout and Patriot like they were apart of their family. My dog was take care of, not afraid, and was still happy when we left. I even had a follow up call today to check to see how his knee is doing today after his injury/visit yesterday. I am truly impressed. I recommend this practice to everyone who has asked. Anyone who has met me know my dogs are my life and it has been awesome that the staff at Winterfield feels the same. We wouldn't have brought our puppy here if we hadn't been required to by the Houlagans Rest adoption agency. They had contracted with these quacks to spay the puppy we rescued, so we reluctantly drove out to the boonies for the service. Our puppy came back from the operation with a breathing problem. I figured, "no problem, she just woke up from surgery." Well, after a few days of her nose still being congested I called them up to ask about it and was told that it was my problem, not theirs. I explained that she had not had any issues before the operation and they were unsympathetic. Not to mention they also removed her front dewclaws during the operation, but wrapped her front paws so tightly that they swole up to twice the normal size. My friendly neighborhood vet was happy to help when I took her in. The upshot? Two years later our sweet dog has trouble breathing, Winferfield caused it, Winterfield won't fix it, and we've been quoted $5,000.00 from a reputable vet to diagnose and doc the problem. Don't bring your dog (or cat, or fish, or hamster) here. Read Less

I am new to Richmond and took my dog for his first check up. I felt the front desk staff were lovely. They were incredibly friendly so really positive experience there and also with the vet. He was personable, happy to answer any questions I had and give me suggestions. The tech/ assistant assigned to us was ok. She wasn't rude or anything just not really a people person but again it's not a criticism - just more noticeable when I had the front desk staff and bet to compare it to. I don't know that prices were unreasonable - our visit was $30 plus shots fees and meds. The one thing I didn't like is that they do semi-annual visits vs annual visits. That is new to me and to be honest I prefer just a once a year for a healthy young dog. If something went wrong in between he'd be brought in but I think every six months is too much for me. Others may disagree. I don't think your experience will be bad there, though, if it was like mine. Read Less

Being new to town, my dog and I visited Winterfield since it was just down the street from us. The first thing that seemed off all three times I visited was the general apathy for all the animals in the waiting room. I'm used to vets being crazy about animals, but it didn't feel like there was a genuine concern or interest in my dog (or any of the other dogs for that matter). I was also disappointed by the steep prices charged, including the exams, medications, and tests. In my experience, they ran all kinds of diagnostic tests (some of which seemed like they were just trying to milk me for all I'm worth), and then indicated the price of these various tests upon checking out. Yikes! Our vet in Oregon would routinely call to check in on our dog after a procedure/sickness, but I definitely did not experience this at Winterfield, even after bringing my dog in with severe vomiting. Again, just apathetic. We visited Sycamore veterinary hospital more recently, and the doctors/staff seem much more like genuine animal lovers. Read Less

Read Less

Extremely pleased with Winterfield Veterinary Hospital. I was able to get an appointment the same day I called, and the staff was friendly both on the phone and in person. They put me at ease right away and my dog--normally not very social--was comfortable with the veterinarian and his assistants. Everyone was non-judgmental, and no one tried to sell me expensive things I didn't need. The final bill was much less than I expected, both for service and for medication. I look forward to a long relationship with this vet. Read Less
