The hospital is very warm and welcoming. The entire staff treats each patient as their own. The veterinarians are thorough and extremely knowledgeable. If a procedure needs to be done, all details and a breakdown of prices. Our cat was being treated for intestinal problems. Cancer was found and surgery performed. While he was recovering, our cat was cared for 24/7. We were informed of his status and were able to visit him as long and often as we wanted. The cancer spread, and we were with our little boy when he left us. The staff took great care of him when under their care and when he left us. Our cat was cremated. When we picked up his ashes, he was in a beautiful little box. We also received his footprint casting with his name on it. The entire staff were so kind and understanding about our loss. Love the doctors and staff at SML Veterinary Hospital!! They have taken care of our babies for a few years now and can't imagine taking them anywhere else! They have my oldest pup at the facility caring for him now and after a visit with him today he's obviously happy there and well cared for!! While we were visiting SML, our dog Buddy developed an infection on his paw. We brought him in to SML Animal Hospital and everyone on the staff was so helpful and friendly. Winkie, now nine years old, had to undergo dental cleaning today...we had tried everything over the past year to avoid this, and actually took very good care of his teeth through the years.... but genetics, his recent mouth pain and loss of a tooth, along with maintaining his good health, overruled my dislike of anesthesia. Highly recommended animal hospital. The staff is very professional and hard working. They always seem to be very very busy (at least in the Spring and Summer) but treatment is always first rate. Cost is reasonable. We spend about 4-5 months every year at Smith Mountain Lake and we are always impressed by how all of the pets are treated and greeted in the waiting room. The ladies (and men) there are very nice and recognize us every time we walk in. Right when we walk in the woman calls to the back and says get Stevie ready to go. And when we drop him off everyone says yay Stevie's here and know who he is. All of the staff members are very nice and sweet to all sorts of animals(I saw a woman today with a rat). I would never even dare to think that we shouldn't take my dog there. Every time my baby(my Yorkie ) walks in his tail is wagging and wants to go in. I would definitely recommend them. Read Less

Dr Gauze is amazing. Very attentive and responsive to our needs and concerns. And unlike most veterinarians she didn't try to push an entire menu of products and services on us. She offered recommendations, gave written prescriptions, and was very forthright in her opinion on the products we were considering for flea and tick control that we could procure online or at other locations. I wish I could give this place 10 stars!  I'm from SML but now live in Florida and whenever I can, I save my Vet visits for SML Animal Hospital.  We routinely receive great service from Dr. Weitzman and his friendly staff.  Locals, know that you are lucky to get such great (and affordable!) care here and tourists, rest assured that your out-of-town pooch is in good hands.  And when I last visited in July 2013, it looked like they were renovating.  Bonus!  Well done, SML Animal Hospital. Dr. Brian Weitzman and his staff are exceptional caregivers. We have had many pets to this office in the past 6 years and have never been disappointed. From chronic ear issues, emergency surgery, routine spay and neutering, and regular vaccinations we always come to SMLAH for care we trust. The prices are reasonable and have always been outlined in advance with any incidental extra costs also explained prior to the procedures. My pets travel with me and I have been to many other veterinarians in many states and none of them can hold a candle to our SMLAH experience. I can't say enough how much trust we have in this establishment. I will never hesitate to recommend these veterinary professionals to anyone. Read Less

I called to make an appointment for my 14 year old sheltie because she was leaking on my floor. I know she has incontinence and asked the person making the appointment what I needed to have done to get her back on Proin (which she was on previously). I was told they could check it with a $21 urine analysis and know whether it was incontinence or a UTI. When we took her in, they decided they were not going to give us anything until we had an analysis & a complete panel done ($81 total, quite a difference from what I was told on the phone). I had just paid for this to check her kidneys & liver less then 4 months ago and felt that should be sufficient enough...who has extra money laying around to keep paying for stuff over and over? I asked why I was not told this when making the appointment and the vet (a woman) had the nerve to say ""Well, you didn't talk to a vet"". I feel that their staff should be trained enough to be able to answer questions, or at least say you need to speak with a vet. Needless to say, we spent almost $100 there and still walked out without ANY medication for my dogs incontinence and are now back at square one. I asked if there was anything over the counter that we could try and was told there is nothing over the counter. After searching the internet, we found Homeopet Leaks No More (OTC) and have decided to try this before returning to a DIFFERENT VET. I do NOT recommend this vet as I feel they are out for the extra money instead of finding cost effective ways to help solve the problem Read Less
