I have been going to Dog & Cat now for about 12yrs and I will not go anywhere else. I've had to put down two animals in the past three years and each experience was beautiful in it's own way. The first time they even told me I could leave without paying because they knew they'd see me again. They are so full of heart. Such compassion and caring isn't always seen in the medical field. God bless those that are in that field, they put up with a lot. But, you always know when you've found a good bunch and this is it. The vet suggested that I get my baby an echocardiogram, in “the next month or so”. The vet went ahead and gave my cat a steroid injection, AND sent him home with steroid pills. Bear went from just having an episode of his Cystitis to dying from congested heart failure. Thank you Dog and Cat hospital. You knew those steroids should have never been given.

This isn't our vet but they let me know which shots were coming due and I was able to have that taken care of while she was there. They had an bathing option...for which I am super grateful. Prices were incredibly reasonable and they take Care Credit. Additionally, they have complimentary dog treats in the waiting area.

This place is the kindest vet office I've ever been to. I was a walk-in, late in the day, and they were EXTREMELY accommodating. I needed last minute nausea medicine for my puppy, and Dr. Hallstrom was enjoyable to talk to and helped us out with no hassle. The office was also clean, unlike my regular vet office. I highly recommend this vet to anyone with cats or dogs!

If your fur babies are Norfolk residents, then the Dog & Cat Hospital is the place to go. My chihuahua, Mya, had also been a frequent flier here during the last year of her life. Dr. Ertugrul was her primary veterinarian. Dr. Ertugrul clearly loved chihuahuas and would share stories/videos of the chihuahuas she had at home. The veterinary and administrative staff were accommodating with scheduling same-day visits and even generously apologized for an extremely long wait. The costs were also reasonable. Last September 2017, I requested a same-day visit, but Dr. Ertugrul's schedule was already full, so Mya was booked with another veterinarian. When the vet saw that Mya had been seeing Dr. Ertugrul, she was able to have Dr. Ertugrul see Mya. I told her all the recent signs and symptoms Mya had been exhibiting and some diagnostic tests were done. Dr. Ertugrul thoroughly explained the diagnosis and poor prognosis. She recommended that Mya immediately go to an emergency vet for treatment and I requested that the referral be sent to BluePearl. The following week, she called and left the sweetest voicemail.

30 years ago my wife and I had a large golden retriever. We were looking for a vet that specialized in large animals. Several folks we talked with recommend Dog & Cat Hospital. 4 dogs and 2 cats later we're still taking our pets to D&C. The staff and the doctors are very caring and personable. They excell at diagnosis of illnesses and any other problems our pets have encountered. All our pets are rescues and so they come with many problems, some have been life threatening. The doctors and staff have saved our pets countless times. For two of our big dogs their end of life at 16 (human years) was handled with compassion and understanding. It's hard to lose a pet when your children grow up with them. They are part of the family. We've recommended D&C to countless friends over the years. Try them you'll be glad you did.

When in Chesapeake we tried the local Deepcreek Vet hospital and soon found out that they were money hungry. So we found ourselves back at the dog and cat hospital.Our Brucie loves going to the Vet. Everyone is very nice and I feel like they have our pups best interest at heart.I would have to say that on one visit (when Bruce really needed his nails trimmed) I was told that Bruce was not be cooperative.... so ultimately they refused to trim as "they didn't want the Vet to be an aversive experience." I tried to accept this but I couldn't. I tried spinning it in a different light, if my child needed to go to the doctors to get something done... would a doctor tell me that my child resisted so they will no longer try... because they don't want to make the doctors office an aversive experience???? Nope.. not ok. Since, they have cut his nails! That is literally my only gripe... I love them otherwise

There may be other veterinarians with similar clinical, surgical, or diagnostic skills, but nobody cares more, has more compassion and empathy, and will go the extra mile more than Ron. This place gets 5 stars simply based off of the first class service and attention of Dr.Hallstrom, his front desk staff, and vet tech's. Our dog had started acting like her leg was bothering her so we took her here and quickly found out that she had an aggressive form of cancer and had to have emergency surgery, Dr. Hallstrom personally did the surgery that would lengthen my dogs life. I am forever grateful, thanks to him, my dog was able to be with us for 4 additional months, he's an angel. He was the only vet who was truly understanding, honest, and empathetic during this time of crisis, if you go here make sure he's the man you see!

They gave her the shots for distemper and rabies and then proceeded to give her a third vaccine, in her nose. My husband wasn't asked if he wanted her to have this vaccine, it was just given to her. What was it for, you ask? Kennel Cough!! This dog is with him at all times and rarely comes in to contact with other dogs except the dog we have here, at home, with me. There was ABSOLUTELY NO reason for his dog to get this vaccination except to get more money out of him!! This is purely over vaccinating and any good vet would not only not do it but would advise against it. Disgusting!!

One bad experience after another. This last time, they tried to give my dog 4 times the dose of the medication she should have been prescribed. The first visit was horrible, as the vet was extremely rude and condescending. I decided to give them another chance since there are other vets besides the rude woman, and now after 2 rounds of blood tests to get the exact dose my dog needed, instead they increase it by 4 times the dose she needs. It's a good thing I caught their mistake or my dog could have died. Incompetent vets at an incompetent hospital with rude staff. I would not recommend them to anyone and I will drive an extra 30 minutes to go to a better vet.

The Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom are criminal in their abusive treatment of animals. On Thursday , January 25, 2013 we presented our ten year old Teddy (cat) to Norfolk Dog and Cat Hospital for cold or flu-like symptoms. A medically unnecessary enema was forced upon our weakened cat and then he was doused with icey-cold water and was then locked in a cage without being dried off or warmed up. After a few hours we were called to collect him and our still wet, shivery cold cat was thrust back in our arms. THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE DECENCY TO PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT HIS WELFARE OR THAT HE WAS STILL WET AND NUMB from the cold water. We handed them a healthy ten year old cat with mild flu-like symptoms and they handed us a near death icy cold and wet cat precipitously worse. The staff wouldn't allow us to confront or consult with the doctor unless we agreed to another $250 payment. We rushed Teddy to Bay-Beach animal hospital ( probably the best in the region) but it was too late for a full recovery. His core body temperature was too low and Teddy was in shock and died 48hours later. Im stilly stymied how our spritely energetic cat could have deteriorated after only four hours in Dr. Gerlach and Dr. Hallstrom's hands. I will be filing criminal animal cruelty charges against the Doctors Gerlach and Halstrom with the local district attorneys office. I will report them to the state of Virginia's Veterinary Board of Medicine. Please be forewarned, Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom are criminals. Absolute criminals. They killed our healthy, beautiful cat by dousing him in ice cold water and caging him up in frigid temperatures on a cold january day. Our Teddy died of shock, and a dangerously low body temperature. He was healthy, except for a winter cold, prior to presenting to Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom. These monsters will kill or seriously harm your pet.

I had a very bad experience with these folks. Twice they overlooked an obvious diagnoses on two different dogs. I wrote the first one off as a mistake, but with the second one, I went to another vet who diagnosed my dog right away. If that wasn't so bad, while I was waiting for my pet to be returned to me after she had been overnight with them, I witnessed the staff ""attending"" to a large dog who had recently been put to sleep. They were laughing and joking because the dog's body was so heavy. It turned my stomach and I've never been back.

My dog has seizures, and we took her in to get a refill on the Phenobarbital the emergency vet had prescribed. Dog and Cat Hospital filled the prescription with 2 x's the strength of the original prescription (the label read the correct dosage and strength, however). I inquired about the larger size pill before I left the office; they assured me it was fine. Our pup was so drugged that she could not stand on her own feet. After 2 days of overdosing our dog and researching the size of the pill Dog and Cat gave us, we realized their mistake and went back to get the correct dosage and pill size. Thankfully, our dog is fine, but it was scary and tough to see the effects that mistake had on our pup.

I highly recommend The Cat and Dog Hospital. I have tried several veterinary offices in Hampton Roads, and rank this one the best of them all. They are very professional, and yet also very compassionate. It is obvious that they love what they do, and the veterinarians are excellent. Their concerns are the health of your animal and your animal's relationship with you and your family. Appointments are available quickly, often the same day. For some routine care, they will tell you just to come in when you are ready. The time in the very clean waiting room is short, and the animals enjoy the socializing with other animals. They are kept on leashes or in carrying crates. I have taken pets to The Dog and Cat Hospital for preventive care, for illness, and for putting a loved pet to sleep. In each case, the vets and technicians were outstanding. They did not do unnecessary tests, but they were thorough as the situation required it. They were happy to find out the costs of procedures before getting your consent to do them. In the case of the miniature dachshund we needed to put to sleep, the vet, not being content with the ultrasound appointment being several days away, faxed information to get a much quicker appointment. When it was decided that the best thing for this aging and very ill dog was to put her to sleep, there was no argument from the vet. She spoke softly to my dog as she gave her the injections, and petted her until she died, all the while not getting into our way, so that we could have those last moments with our pets. I have just acquired a new kitten. We will be visiting The Dog and Cat Hospital this week, to have her shots and have her spayed. I know the care she will receive, both physically and emotionally, will be top-notch.

I have been going to Dog & Cat now for about 12yrs and I will not go anywhere else. I've had to put down two animals in the past three years and each experience was beautiful in it's own way. The first time they even told me I could leave without paying because they knew they'd see me again. They are so full of heart. Such compassion and caring isn't always seen in the medical field. God bless those that are in that field, they put up with a lot. But, you always know when you've found a good bunch and this is it. After getting a second Veterinary opinion, I have decided to move forward with court proceedings. I brought my cat in for a return of his idiopathic Cystitis, and the Vet found a heart murmur. The vet suggested that I get my baby an echocardiogram, in “the next month or so”. The vet went ahead and gave my cat a steroid injection, AND sent him home with steroid pills. Bear went from just having an episode of his Cystitis to dying from congested heart failure. Thank you Dog and Cat hospital. You knew those steroids should have never been given.

This isn't our vet but they let me know which shots were coming due and I was able to have that taken care of while she was there. They had an bathing option...for which I am super grateful. This place is the kindest vet office I've ever been to. I was a walk-in, late in the day, and they were EXTREMELY accommodating. I needed last minute nausea medicine for my puppy, and Dr. Hallstrom was enjoyable to talk to and helped us out with no hassle. The office was also clean, unlike my regular vet office. If your fur babies are Norfolk residents, then the Dog & Cat Hospital is the place to go. My chihuahua, Mya, had also been a frequent flier here during the last year of her life. Dr. Ertugrul was her primary veterinarian. Dr. Ertugrul clearly loved chihuahuas and would share stories/videos of the chihuahuas she had at home. The veterinary and administrative staff were accommodating with scheduling same-day visits and even generously apologized for an extremely long wait. The costs were also reasonable. Last September 2017, I requested a same-day visit, but Dr. Ertugrul's schedule was already full, so Mya was booked with another veterinarian. When the vet saw that Mya had been seeing Dr. Ertugrul, she was able to have Dr. Ertugrul see Mya. I told her all the recent signs and symptoms Mya had been exhibiting and some diagnostic tests were done. Dr. Ertugrul thoroughly explained the diagnosis and poor prognosis. She recommended that Mya immediately go to an emergency vet for treatment and I requested that the referral be sent to BluePearl. The following week, she called and left the sweetest voicemail.

30 years ago my wife and I had a large golden retriever. We were looking for a vet that specialized in large animals. Several folks we talked with recommend Dog & Cat Hospital. 4 dogs and 2 cats later we're still taking our pets to D&C. The staff and the doctors are very caring and personable. They excell at diagnosis of illnesses and any other problems our pets have encountered. All our pets are rescues and so they come with many problems, some have been life threatening. The doctors and staff have saved our pets countless times. For two of our big dogs their end of life at 16 (human years) was handled with compassion and understanding. It's hard to lose a pet when your children grow up with them. They are part of the family. We've recommended D&C to countless friends over the years. Try them you'll be glad you did.

When in Chesapeake we tried the local Deepcreek Vet hospital and soon found out that they were money hungry. So we found ourselves back at the dog and cat hospital.Our Brucie loves going to the Vet. Everyone is very nice and I feel like they have our pups best interest at heart.I would have to say that on one visit (when Bruce really needed his nails trimmed) I was told that Bruce was not be cooperative.... so ultimately they refused to trim as "they didn't want the Vet to be an aversive experience." I tried to accept this but I couldn't. I tried spinning it in a different light, if my child needed to go to the doctors to get something done... would a doctor tell me that my child resisted so they will no longer try... because they don't want to make the doctors office an aversive experience???? Nope.. not ok. Since, they have cut his nails! That is literally my only gripe... I love them otherwise

The staff at the front desk are always friendly and are more than happy to answer any questions or give us information on pricing for anything we need without getting you to buy the mire expensive product or rushing you out like other places. We have been taking our dogs and cats here for years!!! Love them.

This place gets 5 stars simply based off of the first class service and attention of Dr.Hallstrom, his front desk staff, and vet tech's. Our dog had started acting like her leg was bothering her so we took her here and quickly found out that she had an aggressive form of cancer and had to have emergency surgery, Dr. Hallstrom personally did the surgery that would lengthen my dogs life. I am forever grateful, thanks to him, my dog was able to be with us for 4 additional months, he's an angel. He was the only vet who was truly understanding, honest, and empathetic during this time of crisis, if you go here make sure he's the man you see!

Such an amazing team - doctors and staff! Such caring and wonderful people! Thank you for all you have done for me and mine. I have been coming here for several years and have witnessed so much. I witnessed such caring and compassion today. I was there with my sick pooch when this couple came in with an obviously beloved pet who was close to acquiring its wings. You ushered this family away from observers and I feel you helped this family in their grief. Thank you all for your loving caring compassion for the families and their family Pets/Companions. Dr. Grillock (Sp?) was amazing and so kind to us when we had to put our boxer to sleep. He came to our home and talked us through the process. and was there to answer so many questions prior to the procedure when we struggled with making a decision. He was a wonderful person to have by our side during such a hard day. We loved him so much we are taking our new puppy to him. Thank you Dr. Grillock for being there for us.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!! My husband, who is stationed in Norfolk, took his dog to get her vaccines and heartworm meds. They gave her the shots for distemper and rabies and then proceeded to give her a third vaccine, in her nose. My husband wasn't asked if he wanted her to have this vaccine, it was just given to her. What was it for, you ask? Kennel Cough!! This dog is with him at all times and rarely comes in to contact with other dogs except the dog we have here, at home, with me. There was ABSOLUTELY NO reason for his dog to get this vaccination except to get more money out of him!! This is purely over vaccinating and any good vet would not only not do it but would advise against it. Disgusting!!

One bad experience after another. This last time, they tried to give my dog 4 times the dose of the medication she should have been prescribed. The first visit was horrible, as the vet was extremely rude and condescending. I decided to give them another chance since there are other vets besides the rude woman, and now after 2 rounds of blood tests to get the exact dose my dog needed, instead they increase it by 4 times the dose she needs. It's a good thing I caught their mistake or my dog could have died. Incompetent vets at an incompetent hospital with rude staff. I would not recommend them to anyone and I will drive an extra 30 minutes to go to a better vet.

The Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom are criminal in their abusive treatment of animals. On Thursday , January 25, 2013 we presented our ten year old Teddy (cat) to Norfolk Dog and Cat Hospital for cold or flu-like symptoms. A medically unnecessary enema was forced upon our weakened cat and then he was doused with icey-cold water and was then locked in a cage without being dried off or warmed up. After a few hours we were called to collect him and our still wet, shivery cold cat was thrust back in our arms. THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE DECENCY TO PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT HIS WELFARE OR THAT HE WAS STILL WET AND NUMB from the cold water. We handed them a healthy ten year old cat with mild flu-like symptoms and they handed us a near death icy cold and wet cat precipitously worse. The staff wouldn't allow us to confront or consult with the doctor unless we agreed to another $250 payment. We rushed Teddy to Bay-Beach animal hospital ( probably the best in the region) but it was too late for a full recovery. His core body temperature was too low and Teddy was in shock and died 48hours later. Im stilly stymied how our spritely energetic cat could have deteriorated after only four hours in Dr. Gerlach and Dr. Hallstrom's hands. I will be filing criminal animal cruelty charges against the Doctors Gerlach and Halstrom with the local district attorneys office. I will report them to the state of Virginia's Veterinary Board of Medicine. Please be forewarned, Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom are criminals. Absolute criminals. They killed our healthy, beautiful cat by dousing him in ice cold water and caging him up in frigid temperatures on a cold january day. Our Teddy died of shock, and a dangerously low body temperature. He was healthy, except for a winter cold, prior to presenting to Doctors Gerlach and Hallstrom. These monsters will kill or seriously harm your pet.

I had a very bad experience with these folks. Twice they overlooked an obvious diagnoses on two different dogs. I wrote the first one off as a mistake, but with the second one, I went to another vet who diagnosed my dog right away. If that wasn't so bad, while I was waiting for my pet to be returned to me after she had been overnight with them, I witnessed the staff ""attending"" to a large dog who had recently been put to sleep. They were laughing and joking because the dog's body was so heavy. It turned my stomach and I've never been back.

My dog has seizures, and we took her in to get a refill on the Phenobarbital the emergency vet had prescribed. Dog and Cat Hospital filled the prescription with 2 x's the strength of the original prescription (the label read the correct dosage and strength, however). I inquired about the larger size pill before I left the office; they assured me it was fine. Our pup was so drugged that she could not stand on her own feet. After 2 days of overdosing our dog and researching the size of the pill Dog and Cat gave us, we realized their mistake and went back to get the correct dosage and pill size. Thankfully, our dog is fine, but it was scary and tough to see the effects that mistake had on our pup.

I highly recommend The Cat and Dog Hospital. I have tried several veterinary offices in Hampton Roads, and rank this one the best of them all. They are very professional, and yet also very compassionate. It is obvious that they love what they do, and the veterinarians are excellent. Their concerns are the health of your animal and your animal's relationship with you and your family. Appointments are available quickly, often the same day. For some routine care, they will tell you just to come in when you are ready. The time in the very clean waiting room is short, and the animals enjoy the socializing with other animals. They are kept on leashes or in carrying crates. I have taken pets to The Dog and Cat Hospital for preventive care, for illness, and for putting a loved pet to sleep. In each case, the vets and technicians were outstanding. They did not do unnecessary tests, but they were thorough as the situation required it. They were happy to find out the costs of procedures before getting your consent to do them. In the case of the miniature dachshund we needed to put to sleep, the vet, not being content with the ultrasound appointment being several days away, faxed information to get a much quicker appointment. When it was decided that the best thing for this aging and very ill dog was to put her to sleep, there was no argument from the vet. She spoke softly to my dog as she gave her the injections, and petted her until she died, all the while not getting into our way, so that we could have those last moments with our pets. I have just acquired a new kitten. We will be visiting The Dog and Cat Hospital this week, to have her shots and have her spayed. I know the care she will receive, both physically and emotionally, will be top-notch.
