deceptive billing, gives you a quote and then when you get the bill it is 2 or 3 times as much. My last well pet visit, they weighed my dog. No temp, no tummy check, no hind leg check. I was instructed to bring a fecal sample for this visit then was told that test would be an additional $35. My original quote was $89, walked out paying almost $200. $7 was biowaste disposal, I elected not to do the fecal test and gave them the sample I brought in. They should of told me, would have brought it home. I had a heartworm test, was told it would take 2 days, right after I left I got the results, problem is, I could not see where they did the blood draw. You know, the hair still has alcohol on it. My dog is a mutt. Read Less

I definitely miss DR MORGAN, she was the main reason I started coming to this clinic in the first place. Now i'm not coming back, i went in for my dog's health visit and i got another doctor that just wanted to charge me for blood-work that wasn't needed. And on top of that, told me that she would give me a call back the next day and NEVER DID. Staff is great, the original doctor of the place Dr Harrison is ehhhhhhhhhhhhh. I guess it was a good thing she sold her practice to a corporation. I heard a lot of complaints while i was in the lobby, mostly from staff members; talking bad about Dr Harrison. Apparently, she prescribes medication ILLEGALLY without examining the pet or so staff members were saying. 100% not seeing her EVER. I know pet owners want the cheapest, but this can be very unhealthy for your pet. I guess you could compare this veterinary clinic to a McDonalds, this clinic is trying to make a fast buck but it is EXTREMELY unprofessional. But I will not be returning after this illegal stuff that has been going. Maybe the veterinary medical board should know about this. Management team could do better, but it seemed that everyone was unhappy when Dr Harrison walked through the door. I RECOMMEND VISITING, DR MORGAN, SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST VET IN RICHMOND. Good thing I was informed that she was now at Locke and Taylor's practice, definitely following her there for my dogs' and cat's health! My dogs will definitely be happier with better doctors in their lives. Read Less

Dr. Winsted is probably one of the most compassionate and caring veterinarians that I've met.  Our former cat was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma and after 13 months of palliative treatment, it was time for her to cross the rainbow bridge.  Instead of packing Dolly up in a pet carrier, Dr Winsted came to our home with a vet tech and we were able to put our sweet Dolly to sleep in the comfort of our home. We're relatively new to this practice, and live in the city (so we have plenty of vet options), but they certainly have given me every reason to continue coming back! Dr. Fulton has been great with our two beagle-hounds, one old and one young, but most of all he's been great with the humans too -- answering my many questions thoroughly and respectfully. When our older beagle was experiencing vision loss, he literally sat down with me and talked about next steps, demonstrating that he recognized the gravity of the situation for me as a pet owner, even though I think I appeared to be handling it well -- this meant a lot because he easily could have just gave me a referral and sent us on our way. The rest of the staff has been kind, patient and friendly as well -- I've called many times for various reasons and don't think I've ever hung up dissatisfied with the exchange. Read Less

May God Bless the Staff here at this Hospital. My cat came down with a UTI and wasn't able to urinate risking his life. As soon as we got to the Hospital, They began the surgery despite our dire financial situation and assisted with helping find insurance. After Surgery, We were able to see our cat in great condition a day after surgery, and when we picked him up the next Monday we had no problems with a prospective payment for the hospital fees to get him out. They should be the only place people should take their pets to. Read Less

I don't even know where to begin to express by sincere gratitude and thanks to the doctors and staff at Betty Baugh's animal clinic.  My cat has been a patient of Betty Baugh's since she was born and rescued as a very young kitten.  She is now 13 years old.  Her health has been a challenge since early on and we have been very fortunate to have a consistent team supporting us.   I feel like we have used many of our "nine lives" but always had the most amazing care for all at Betty Baughs.  We have been most fortunate to be under the constant care of Dr. Carrie O'Dair who goes above and beyond to make sure that my cat is well cared for.  We have been put in very stressful and at times scary circumstances with her health dealing with imflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, and even copperhead bites and Dr. O'Dair has always gone above the call of duty to make sure that we feel confident in her protocol.   One of the most important things is everyone at Betty Baugh's not only looks out for our animals but they also look out for us as caregivers. I have shed many a tear and expressed my anxieties or fears and they have been there to support me every step of the way.  I feel that if it were not for Dr. O'Dair and everyone at Betty Baugh's that our beloved cat would not be with us anymore.  Last year we entered into the scary world of diabetes and because of their spectacular care and guidance to us as home care givers, I am proud to say that I now have a cat who is essentially in remission from diabetes and converted back.   I also think one of the most amazing things at Betty Baughs is the opportunity to explore alternative methods of care for your animal including Western medicine.  We have been able to successfully control her IBD for many years with the use of Chinese herbs.  Again I must reiterate that we are eternally grateful to all at Betty Baughs.  I feel that they are part of our family because of their extreme devotion to each furry family member that they care for and support that they show our animals and owners.   THANK YOU! We have taken our Wheaten terrier mix, Bailey to Betty Baugh's Clinic for about two years with care by Dr. Molly Morgan.  In the midst of diagnosing and beginning treatment for new onset of diabetes and a bout of pancreatitis, we appeared for an appointment to be told that Dr. Morgan resigned on the day of our previous visit, and they have no information to share.  We were very disappointed, as we had trust in her care, decision-making and communications.   Up until this point, we would have given a 5 star rating to this clinic.  However, we are beginning to have some concerns about the management of this clinic and tech oversight since we now have a dog with a serious, chronic illness which requires careful management. When we retrieved Bailey from a day of curve blood sugar testing, the tech who brought our dog out to us gave us incorrect information, which certainly could have caused a problem, telling us to increase the dose of insulin to 7 units twice daily. Bailey had been on 4 units. When we questioned this, she admitted that she had not looked at the chart, nor had she spoken to the Dr.  We insisted that she do both.  She returned with the correct instruction, which was to increase to 5 units, but, then we had to remind her to give us back our insulin to take home.  Next day of curve testing, same tech hands us Bailey, tells us that Dr. Winstead will call us, and once again she has to be reminded to give us our insulin to take home. Dr. Winstead informed us that she would call us on Wed. or, more likely Thursday with the results of the curve testing.  No call came.  We pursue her on Friday, to have tech response to our concern that we were not called rather non-chalant " she's booked all day, will call when she has time." When Dr. Winstead calls, she blames tech staff for lack of call, stating that they failed to leave her a flag in her mailbox. Insulin is increased by 1 unit twice daily, because his blood sugar is still " not well controlled," treatment plan change delayed by untimely followup with us.We return to the office to purchase another vial of insulin. (were to,d several days earlier that they had it on hand)...they have none on hand.  So, we paid $49.50 at this office for first vial, now are directed to order it from their pharmacy, so cost to us is $49.50 plus 19.95 for expedited shipping, 14.95 for standard shipping.  Prescription food js $27.50 for a 7 lb. bag, and they don't stock larger bag (17.5 lb. bag is 53.00, including tax and free shipping at Chewy.com).  Lessons learned..requested scripts for all supplies, including prescription food, and are purchasing elsewhere--and don't expect quick access to prescriptions as at your PCP's office.  They have to be typed by the pharmacy and signed by the doctor, so you could be waiting several hours before they are ready. We were happy with Dr. Winstead's management of Bailey's pancreatitis, UTI, and that she took time to call us in to get Bailey to eat during a 2 day hospitalization for the pancreatitis when it was critical that he eat so that insulin could be administered,  and we are happy with her usually good communication.  However, we are not confident about techs, and we certainly think that a clinic treating diabetic dogs should stock vials of insulin for ease of access for customers. We were hopeful that Dr. Betty Baugh Harrison would be able to help us with our Boston Terrier, Max, who was diagnosed with cancer. She was so caring and sensitive, but unfortunately the cancer was too far advanced. When the time came to let him go, Dr. Harrison was so kind as to come to our home in the evening so that both my husband and I could be with Max . She was able to administer the drugs while Max rested in the snuggling position he had chosen, next to me. He peacefully drifted off, which was such a blessing after watching him suffer and decline for the past week. I can't say enough how much it meant to have such a caring person help us with this process. Max, our sweet little guy, will be missed by our family, but at least I have peace knowing that we did all that we could to help him, and letting him go, in his own spot on the sofa snuggled beside me meant the world to both my husband and me! Thank you, Dr. Harrison! Read Less

I’ve taken my dog here twice and during my second visit left with a very bad taste in my mouth. The treatment always seemed fine but I felt like the vet tried to push different procedures and tests for my perfectly healthy 1 year old dog. She wanted to have several different tests conducted and I reluctantly agreed to a few. Afterward, they never even called me back with his results. I had to call them days later. To me, it seemed like they were taking advantage of pet owner’s love for their pets and recommending a bunch of uneceasary tests to make more money. I’ve had three dogs and dealt with different vets over the years, I did not trust the vet in this clinic. They also charge substantially more than other clinics. Read Less

Based on all the positive reviews I decided to take my dog here.  I took my 2 year old GSD there once and we've never been back.  It was our first visit and the technician came into the room and took my dog back to get his weight. 10 minutes later the vet, technician and my dog walk back into the room.  The vet did the exam and administered vaccines all while he was in the back.  My dog is not aggressive and has never had a problem at the vet and I was furious that they did all of this behind closed doors. He has PTSD due to a traumatic injury. They bring him back and as I am going to pay I notice this thing hanging from his collar. I say what is this? They say oh I calming hood. A what? I did not give my permission to have anything used on my dog. Oh it just goes over his head and face to keep him calm. And again you did not ask my permission to do anything. But...My problem is how do I trust you from now on when unless you had not made the stupid mistake of leaving it on him, you were not going to tell me anything... that is deceitful. How do I now know you are not using a muzzle or just what is going on out of my sight? I don't. All the wonderful things this clinic has done ruined for me by this deception. When I obtained both of my kitten's medical records the appointment where they messed up was not on there even though we have receipts and verbal confirmation of the problem. It took about a week to get the correct records and a sincere apology and refund. I no longer trust this practice with my kittens based on the unnecessary vaccine without our knowledge and the way the situation was originally handled by front office staff. Make sure to double check with the person treating your animal on what will be administered in the back. Read Less

They have been my vet for the last few years, taking care of both my cat and dog.In general, Betty Baugh's does an adequate job as a vet.  However, my most recent experience has left a bad taste in my mouth with them.A few months ago I took my cat in for a persistent sneeze.  The doctor asked that I try an allergy med first (she recommended two different types) and then if those didn't work, she would prescribe an antibiotic treatment.I went through a course of the two separate allergy meds, with a short 2 week break in between to flush out any of the first allergy meds.  Neither worked, so I contacted Betty Baugh's about the antibiotic treatment.  The receptionist went over the doctor's notes, placed a new note in, and said she would contact me when the antibiotics were ready for pickup. After not hearing back, I again contacted the office two business days later .  The same receptionist answered.  This time, she said I would have to make an appointment and put me on hold, twice.  When she returned from placing me on hold, she was rude and short on the phone not caring about my concerns only wanting to know if I wanted an appointment.Sadly, it is time to move on from Betty Baugh's as they don't seem too concerned about their customers. We really love our vet - Dr. Morgan but the service and delivery has made us take our business elsewhere. She is the ONLY reason this was even 2 stars. On our last 3 visits we endured over two hours of time for basic services. Animals are taken care of out of sight which I personally do not care for but is something to know up front. Little things like clipping nails without asking ( and charging ) to giving the incorrect prescription have been some issues.I waited over 30 minutes for a bill / checkout and it was still incorrect. I've got a 20 year old cat howling and a terrified chihuahua waiting for a bill and the staff was clueless. We asked Betty Baugh to contact us and in turn her office manager called instead and was unapologetic. She had excuses for every turn. We have 4 animals and our business was obviously not valuable. Read Less

When the ear didn't get better, we went to a different Vet for a second opinion. Low and behold there was a piece of grass stuck at the bottom of the ear canal. We have had two vets come to our house to care for our elderly dog. The first visit, Dr. Morgan and her assistant came.  They spent a good amount of time observing our dog in the backyard to see if he had neurological or pain problems.  She thoroughly examined him in his own setting, and gave us a plan to keep him happy and comfortable in his last months of life.  Unfortunately, a couple of months later, we realized it was time to put him down.  He was losing his ability to use his back legs, and he was going in and out of getting sick and avoiding food.  We had tried using a harness to help him out to the bathroom, but he started to collapse more and more, and we didn't want his final days  to be in pain.  The vet who came out, Dr. Baugh, was so kind.  It was such a hard day for our family. And she and her assistant were very compassionate.  She didn't rush us, allowed us to spend our last moments with our almost 15 year old dog.  And she talked to us throughout the procedure so we knew what was happening. We did have some minor problems with the person scheduling the visit and taking our payment, but nothing to overshadow the incredible care. In my experience, Betty Baugh's is overrated. I have had repeated problems there, practically every time I go there with my cat, in fact. The veterinarian is fine, competent and nice, but the staff constantly falls short. Today was a perfect example. Several days ago, I went there to get prefilled B-12 syringes for my cat. They gave me three syringes but charged me for twelve. They also gave me needles that were too large, and larger than ones I had previously been given. When they gave me the remaining prefilled syringes, they gave them to me in a clear plastic bag, even though it was the middle of the day and B-12 degrades quickly in sunlight. The last time I took my cat it was even worse. He was there for routine blood testing and nail trimming. While he was in the back, the staff person at the desk casually asked me if he was there for a percorten injection. That was apparently on his order, but I had no idea what a percorten injection was. (Apparently it is to treat hyperadrenocorticism, which my cat does not have.) They consistently fail to call on a timely basis with lab results, or return calls timely. In addition, the waiting area is usually dominated by dogs and is extremely loud, and the wait for routine appointments after arriving is, in my opinion, unreasonably long. I recently moved to Richmond from Chicago and am accustomed to taking my cat to highly competent veterinary clinics. This one falls substantially short, in my experience. Read Less

We took my puppy to Betty Baugh's after my roommate told me that's where she took her dog. When we walked in, the front desk staff was GREAT. Super friendly, and we were seen really quickly. The nurse who helped us was also very friendly and played with our German Shepherd puppy. That's where the "good" stopped. Todd Gaffney was our DVM, and he was horrible. He was very condescending and when I tried to explain my reasonings for what I was feeding him, where he was sleeping, etc. he would constantly interrupt me with his very rude retorts. In my experience, I pay a veterinarian for sound medical advice for my pet, not sass. The medical advice wasn't even particularly useful; he told me that my dog's ears were "fine" when in fact he had a bad case of ear mites. The only way I would recommend this veterinary practice to my colleagues is if they did NOT see him. He's awful! Read Less

What a traumatic experience, do not take your pet(s) here! False information recorded during my call to receptionist, misdiagnosis of pet, improper medication prescribed, lack of compassion and no apology after the fact.Had I not taken my pet to another vet and received the opinion of a 3rd vet (a behavior specialist), my dog would have been taking the wrong medication for the wrong diagnosis, and would be a week away from being euthanized, thanks to the lack of thorough care she received at Betty Baugh's, specifically by Dr. Molly Morgan, DVM.Called to bring in my dog for a comprehensive exam, as she was exhibiting signs of pain but we weren't sure where. I learned after getting my pet's records that the receptionist wrote down, "Owner extremely fearful of pet, may be time to euth." These words NEVER came out of my mouth. I described her discomfort as her growling when touched in the rear, then rolling onto her back and whimpering. This incorrect transcription of my call led to prejudgments about my dog's behavior and alleged "aggression," and inflammatory and accusatory information was put in her chart. She does not have an aggression problem. After seeing an amazing veterinary surgeon, who took the time to do a thorough exam, my dog was treated for a fully impacted anal gland. Some antibiotics and she's already feeling better, zero signs of aggression because she is no longer in pain. Filing official complaints with the American Veterinary Medical Association, VA Board of Veterinary Medicine, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the BBB. I know mistakes happen, but there are too many mistakes to overlook in this case. Never going back again, and will be sure to share my experience with as many people as possible to avoid this happening to someone else. Read Less

I will begin by saying that I NEVER write negative reviews of businesses. I am a small business owner and I know some days you are just ""off your game."" That being said I had an awful experience at this clinic and will never go back. I've used Betty Baugh for a little over a year because, while pricey, it is very close to my house and the doctor I usually see is very nice and has even called the next day just to follow up after a treatment. A week ago my cat got extremely ill and I called first thing in the morning. (While the web site says that they open at 7:30, no one answered the phone until 8:15.) My usual doctor was not in and I agreed, because of the emergency, to see whoever could take me first. I explained that I thought something was very wrong, told her the symptoms and suggested that it could be renal failure or kidney related. She was cool and uninterested and interrupted to say they could see me at 10. I arrived with a limp, vomiting cat and, as I entered, noticed a sign on the door ""reminding me"" of ""remodeling."" Remodeling they were. There were obvious signs of construction, no real seating or waiting area and also, to my horror, a makeshift exam table in that waiting area. I was told to put my cat on that table as a dog began barking thirty feet away and the sound of hammers and sawing came from the usual exam rooms. The workers were hollering back and forth and walking through the waiting area and the receptionists and nurses were joking and carrying on about twenty feet away while I was told my cat had a most-likely cancerous mass in her stomach the size of a golf ball. The doctor then apologized, patted my back and said they would normally take x-rays but they didn't have any x-ray equipment set up (or any equipment for that matter) and said they would draw blood and give her fluids. Giving her fluids in this third-world style set up took five minutes and the cat screamed the entire time, causing the receptionists to have to talk louder over the noise. The whole thing took less than twenty minutes, was $200 dollars and I left knowing nothing, sobbing and with a terrified cat. I have since gone to another vet, gotten x-rays and a thorough explanation of my options. They even booked an appointment immediately with a specialist that is usually too busy to see anyone last minute. I, naturally, had to pay all over again but it was surprisingly less than Betty Baugh, with the x-ray included. I did not leave crying. My real question is why stay open during remodeling if you have no exam rooms available and no equipment set up? Why, when I clearly explained the gravity of the situation over the phone, would they not have said they couldn't really do anything there and recommend another hospital? I understand that closing up for a few days means not making money. I also think that placing the owner and her dying animal in the back of the waiting room amid boxes and junk while, with their animal screaming, people are walking around talking, laughing and also staring at them is cruel and not a small bit traumatizing. The hectic environment can be unsettling for a nervous animal. Many parents bring their kids to see the pets for adoption, and the walls are so thin that my cat gets nervous hearing the kids scream with joy. And I like to hold the cat (in his carrier) on my lap when there are dogs around, but sometimes there is just nowhere to sit. But the worst part is the actual ""busyness."" Case in point: Last year my cat needed to have an ultrasound, so we made an appt for the next week. He was not to eat or drink after a certain hour (midnight maybe). So he fasted and I dropped him off at Baugh's around 8 the next morning. Around 5:00 I received a call from the vet who was to perform the ultrasound. She said they were so busy due to an unexpected emergency, and they had not been able to perform the ultrasound. She further stated that it would be best if we rescheduled for another day because if she did the ultrasound now, she would feel rushed. (Are you kidding me?) So my poor cat was hungry ALL DAY and stuck in a cage with other cats around, barking dogs around etc, and we had to do this all over again? We rescheduled, she performed the ultrasound, and that was the last time I went to Baugh's. I did have to call them back, though, because they double-billed me. Read Less

I took my two dogs here for over a year and I would not recommend Betty Baugh's to anyone. Although the office is nice and in a nice area of town, I had several issues. I've been taking my 3 dogs and 3 cats to Betty Baugh's for 5 years now, and am uniformly delighted with the clinic's atttentiveness, level of care, and friendliness. I have a favorite vet, but have also seen at least three others, and have had good experiences with all of them. They maintain good records, and make a point of familiarizing themselves with my pets' histories so that every visit is part of an ongoing pattern, rather than an isolated incident; they also call to follow up on treatment to see how it's working out. I like the balance the clinic maintains between hands-off and aggressive care, and the way the vets explain my options to me, and make me the major voice in any treatment plan. I'm usually able to get appointments on short notice -- plus, they make housecalls (and for a very reasonable charge). Read Less

deceptive billing, gives you a quote and then when you get the bill it is 2 or 3 times as much. Read Less

Read Less

As soon as we got to the Hospital, They began the surgery despite our dire financial situation and assisted with helping find insurance.

Read Less

I used to love this Clinic but today... Today just kinda ruined it for me I can never trust them to take my dog out of my sight again. So they took my baby back for a nail trim. She was very thorough with examining her and wasted no time in getting back to me with her findings. I truly appreciated that she went above and beyond for us. I cannot go without mentioning her kind bedside manner and empathy. She truly is a gem and I would recommend her to anyone searching for a new doctor. Thank you, Dr. Morgan. Read Less

Read Less

Our Mini Aussie got in a fight with a chicken wire fence on Christmas day (2013) and needed a lot of attention and work done on him. He had a abscess wound the size of a dollar bill. We couldn't have asked for a better staff to care of him the entire 4 month long wound care process. Dr. Gaffney, Dr. Fulton, and the vet techs did an amazing job. They treated our pup like he was theirs and answered all of our 9 million questions. Truly the best staff. If I could give this place zero stars I would. They used to be good. Used them for years, but no more. Staff and doctors are incompetent. Took my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in for what appeared to be an ear infection. Young vet said it was glue ear. Gave us medicine. When the ear didn't get better, we went to a different Vet for a second opinion. Low and behold there was a piece of grass stuck at the bottom of the ear canal. The vet at Betty Baugh's didn't even bother to look in the ear. Stay away from these people. Never again. The whole place is full of incompetent people.Read Less

Read Less

Continuity of care has never been an issue as they keep accurate chart notes. My only issue with Betty Baugh's Animal Clinic is the front desk staff. On a scale of 1 to 10, they are consistently rated at a 5 in my book. They do their jobs, but do not make any effort to be friendly, appear to move at no more than 3/4 speed, and can seem perplexed by the most basic of questions.I am willing (usually) to put with the front office staff's faults because the professional care is so good. I took my two dogs here for over a year and I would not recommend Betty Baugh's to anyone. Although the office is nice and in a nice area of town, I had several issues. First, we saw a different doctor every time we went, and with a sickly dog, there was no continuity. The dental doctor also said she would research a certain condition and call us back, and I never received the call. Read Less
