This vet has the nicest staff we've ever met!  We are moving overseas and needed a health certificate for our dog to avoid heavy quarantine regulations in Japan. We first went to Stafford animal.hospital as they were recommended by the usda accredited registry. Before I left that office, I found 2 mistakes. Fortunately, I'm super organized wirh all of my dogs records. We then drove over an hour to the USDA office in Richmond for the seal as we were departing that evening for our check in to Seattle prior to our flight to Japan. So- it a nutshell, SUPER time sensitive. When we got to the USDA (which you must have an apt for) we found out the vet in Stafford STILL had more mistakes. They recommendes Broad street vet hospital. Fortunately, we had our dog with us and were able to.run there and back with the proper paperwork. The Manager, staff and vet were Amazing during such a stressful time. While we are behind on our travels and have to rush to get to Seattle in time, our pup would not have made it on the flight at all without broad street vet saving the day.  They even watched our dog for an our so we can eat something before running back to the usda office.Military families- if you are going to use a commercial Vet, these guys know what they are doing and actually care!! I called them to ask what their charge to soay my cat would be. The representative said she did not know because it depends on the weight. She did not ask or give a range. Then she said am appointment would be 59 dollars. So I guessed that they want you to get an appointment so you can find out the cost for a spay - amazingly, she confirmed that was true. The representative single handedly ran me off before I even visited the hospital and met the doctors. Oh well, its a competitive business, maybe they have too many customers or something. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Broad Street Vet! Dr. Hiser and the staff are incredibly friendly, accommodating, and attentive. My pets have always been given excellent care; from things as small as upset stomachs, to extensive mast cell removal surgeries. Dr. Hiser gives very clear explanations/diagnoses and treats pets accordingly without adding any unnecessary expenses. The front desk staff and the technicians are wonderful about communicating with owners whether you're simply scheduling an appointment or your pet is in their care for something more serious. I can't imagine taking my pets anywhere else! Read Less

I brought my 10-year-old dog Fiona to Broad St. Vet yesterday for vomiting and diarrhea. From the initial phone call to book the appointment to seeing the doctor to the follow up call this morning, the staff couldn't have been more friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Dr. Stevens did a great job of presenting us with all of the information and scenarios for what could be wrong (V/D is obviously a broad issue that could be caused by numerous things), without being overzealous or pushy on unnecessary and expensive treatment options. As someone who worked for the Veterinary Emergency Center in Carytown and at Banfield for years, I can honestly say BSV's prices are fair or at least on par with average costs in this area. More importantly, their customer service is top notch. I was also impressed with the cleanliness of the office. This was our first visit (we usually go to Church Hill Vet but they don't accept CareCredit) but I know we'll be back. 5 stars all around! Read Less

I am very sorry to give this rating to a business that I have happily used for 15 years, but personnel changes and behaviors require it.  I've had at least 4 pets treated by their office and do and spend what it takes to keep them healthy.  I recently adopted a dog because I promised a friend that if she got too sick with cancer, I would take the dog, no matter what.  The dog mom has been in the hospital over 3 months this year.  The mom and I were friends 20 years ago, but being a pet person, I made the commitment, which involved driving from VA to PA 10 hours round trip to pick it up.  Arriving at the kennel in PA, I was shocked to find that the dog was 15 years old, could not walk more than 10 steps without falling down and was incontinent.  Nevertheless, I brought it home with me keeping my promise and wanting my friend to not worry about her dog.  After a week of observation and twice daily pain meds,  it was clear that the dog was at the end of its life.  Had it been mine originally, it would have passed sooner.  It took 2 days of agonizing for me to schedule her to be put to sleep.  I told this story to the scheduler at Broad St. and no issues were raised.  Upon arrival, I retold the story to Dr. Stevens, who examined the dog stating that not only was she unable to walk many steps she had significant teeth disease, a likely dislocated front leg joint and swollen organs.  He asked if I was going to tell my friend of the process and I said 'No, the dog is mine now and I have all the records to prove it. Moreover, this is the last thing she needs to hear or deal with."  He said "We cannot do this unless you call your friend."Dr. Stevens.  I could understand concerns if I brought in a spry puppy for this awful service.  And you have the right to tell clients what services you can perform or not from a business perspective. You are welcome to give them options. But you will NOT define my relationship with my dying friend or judge me based on a 10 minute conversation, where you yourself deemed the dog unwell.  You may know the science of veterinary, but you do know not the art or the business. I've always had great experiences at Broad St. vet. From when I first brought my boxer there, they were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. You can clearly tell that everyone who works there, especially the vets, really cares about animals. Their pricing is fair and reasonable. They clearly communicate what's wrong with your pet, even if your pet has something serious, like my boxer who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The vet was very compassionate when he described my dog's situation and gave me some much appreciated, honest feedback about life expectancy/treatment options. When my dog finally passed back in January, they sent me a card signed by all the staff with condolences. This was honestly one of the sweetest gestures they could have made. I'll always take my pets to them from here on out. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Hiser, the office staff, and the vet techs. They were so helpful and kind when our big dog passed from cancer and were patient and understanding (both personally and financially) in the treatments prior. I was given many options for euthanasia and cremation and that helped me see just how much they care about their animals. My dogs hated going to their previous vet and now my remaining pup gets EXCITED to see everyone. What dog likes going to the vet that much? He's crazy. Anyway, Dr. Hiser and staff will probably continue to be the only vet I refer my friends to (and there have been MANY). This place is near and dear to our hearts. After a few separate issues with these people, it's time to find someplace new (not to mention more affordable and professional). 1st visit: after just adopting my dog from the spca she developed a bad case of kennel cough. So I take her in with my old roommate since he had been there before. The vet (a southern gentleman) insisted on taking her in the back to administer medication (why they couldn't in the room IDK) and then tells me to give my dog Whiskey to ease her sore throat. Whiskey? The worst possible kind of alcohol to feed a dog? It's poison! 2nd visit: Just a routine checkup and updated vaccinations. There was a mix up on whether my dog had the bordatella updated as it wasn't on the printed receipt. I went back in to ask if she got the shot or not as the vet earlier told me he was giving her the vaccination (again they insisted on taking my dog in the back so I did not see). Did she get it twice? I also realized I was under my old roommates name from the 1st visit and was told I could set up my own account, under my name, so I left my contact info with the front desk. 3rd encounter: This time I called. I have felt uncomfortable with them and wanted to change vets so I call for my pups latest vaccination info. Lo and behold, they never changed my info and I was still under my old roommates name. The kicker... the contact info and address was mine but under his name. So now I'm told my dog of 4 years isn't mine and it's illegal to send vaccinations to me. I work in the dog industry and I call for vaccinations all day long to vets across the country. Even after offering to show proof of her adoption with my name, receipts from their own office with my name, and pictures galore of her and me... she still isn't my dog. "Ma'am it isn't your signature on the paperwork." I have been the only one taking her in and never had anyone ask to sign paperwork for my dog. Unprofessional! Not once. Not twice. But three times. Movin' on. Read Less

I recently started going to Broad Street Vet instead and it has been a world of difference. Dr. Hiser spent a LOT of time sitting down with me and talking about my dog and what could possibly be going on with him (he had a recent behavioral change) and what to look for in the future, etc. Everyone I dealt with in the office has been a pleasure and I am not an easy person to deal with as I called before my first visit at least 3 times to ask different questions! He wanted to AMPUTATE MY DOG's FOOT...Brought my beloved dog to West Broad Vet as a new patient, she was lame and I had seen some blood on her paw. I told Dr Rose that she has a history of arthritis. He said he thought the blood was ink! I asked the assistant if they used a magnifying glass and the assistant said they didn't have any! They took an Xray, told me she had BONE CANCER and wanted to AMPUTATE! He took more xrays and said she was lucky it hadn't spread yet. He also took blood-work $$$. I asked about recovery and long-term implications of having part of her foot amputated and all he said was "Don't worry, she'll be fine, we do this ALL THE TIME!" I forked over $900 that day and up to $2000 for the surgery they eagerly scheduled for 2 days later. The next day I took her back to our old vet Dr. Creasey at Powhatan Animal hospital. She recommended new xrays, the quality of the one Rose sent over was POOR and only 1 foot, she said both feet in the same picture doesn't cost any more and she wanted to check them both out. Dr. Creasey was pretty sure it was arthritis. The bleeding was from a toe nail and she bandaged her up. She wanted to be sure about the diagnosis and treatment so she had a radiologist look it over and they sent a report concurring it was arthritis! GOOD THING I DIDNT LET HER GET BUTCHERED ON BROAD ST! That would have have CRIPPLED HER FOR LIFE! If you dare to bring your pet there, get a second opinion if they want to operate on your pet - it's a cash cow! Read Less

I have never written a review for my previous vets, as it would have been just moderate.  But since moving back to Richmond 2 years ago and choosing Broad Street Vet, I have been thoroughly happy with our decision.  We have 3 dogs, so vets bills can get overwhelming.  Dr. Hiser is very thorough, but is also conscious of the fact that I may need to budget certain things out.  I was talked into treatments with previous vets that my dogs didn't necessarily need, and this is not the case with BSVH.  I am particularly driven to write this favorable review because of how great they were today.  Last week they provided wonderful care to my oldest dog, who had been mysteriously losing weight.  I had dropped her off for the day, and when I approved some tests, there was a miscommunication as to the extent of what I wanted to be done.  So they credited back to me those charges, at their own expense!  This a an example of the care they show, not just to their animal patients, but their owners as well.  I feel very comfortable knowing my dogs are in good care with BSVH as their vet, and that, as an owner, my needs and concerns are addressed and met as well. Blondy Blondell my beautiful, gorgeous, Blond Chow Chow , has been seeing Dr. Rose for 5 Years. we had discovered a mass on Blondys left side of his chest about a year or so ago. Just yesterday mornining Dr Rose and I decided that it would be best for Blondy to have a Lumpectomy Which was performed yesterday and removal of a small cyst off of his upper eylid and dental cleaning. Blondy now has the million dollar movie star smile!. Which is the excision of the lump, mass or tumor. I do not know what i would have done with out Dr Rose, because the mass was pretty ugly, and alive and instead of having to use a laser the bloody thing had to be cut out , and going into blondy's tissue and muscle. The surgery and Rose were phenominal, with Blondy recovering from surgery 100% with absolute NO Complications what so ever. Dr. Rose , calls Blondy almost every morning and night to make sure that he is doing ok, or if he needs anything. Neil Rose is one of the most kindest, compationate, sensitive human beings i have ever met. I would also say that goes for: Christie, Tracy, Karen,John ""Yvonne, Debbie, and De Rou, and Dr. Hiser. Also, Blondy has been recieving Laser Therapy for the past month for he has Degeneritive Disc Disease, and osteoarthritis. the Laser Treatments have done wonders for Blondy and the laser treatments have really helped him exspecially on his right side. I am not made of money, but i will tell you this, I would trust my own Life to Dr. Rose and the entire staff at Broad Street, i do not care how much it costs!!!!!!!! Blondy is my best friend, companion, loyal, unconditional love ,and one of the family. so with that being said i do not care what it costs, blondy is worth every bloody penny. If you do not want your dog/cat to have the same care as you, then why have a pet, that is my own opinion. It's right on Broad but they have a parking lot behind building. I liked the vet and got an estimate for Max's upcoming teeth cleaning. I had taken in my estimate from Florida which was around $250, so I was stunned to get an estimate for almost three times that amount. The vet just said things were more expensive in Virginia. I guess that may be true, but I just couldn't afford that much. This vet will no longer get my business. The first incident that made me question their ethics was regarding a concern I had about my dog's excessive drooling. We adopted our dog from the SPCA and brought him in for the initial check-up. During this visit I mentioned that he was drooling excessively during car rides and was concerned about him drooling non-stop on an upcoming 8-hour road trip we were making with our dog. The vet said it was likely due to anxiety and had a ""free"" sample of a certain anti-anxiety med I could try to help ease the anxiety of the car ride. He said if it worked he would prescribe for future car rides. When I went to check-out I had a $40 charge on my bill for the medication and when I mentioned to the check-out attendant that this was a mistake because I was promised a free sample she said, ""no worries, let me check with the doctor and I'll be right back."" When she returned she stated that the doctor realized he had no free samples so he just gave me the whole pack and was going to charge me for it. I refused to take the meds and gave my dog dramamine instead, which worked by the way. I couldn't believe that the vet didn't come out and ask me if I still wanted the medication when he realized he didn't have free samples since there was now a $40 charge. It was like he was sneaking it on my bill. This should have been my first clue to never come back but I gave them another chance and later brought my dog back for an illness he had. They ran some test to try to determine the cause and after running several tests they were never able to ascertain what was causing the issue. I have pet insurance and so I filed a claim with VPI and they only paid a portion of the claim. When I called VPI to inquire about the reimbursement they stated that they didn't cover one of the tests and then mentioned, as a side note, that the price I was charged for the test was way more expensive than what most vets should charge. This of course made me curious so I called around to 4 different local vets, all within a few miles of each other, and asked what they charged for the same tests. Sure enough the charge was 1/4 of the cost of what I was charged at Broad Street Vet. After this incident I will never go back nor will I recommend that anyone go to this vet. I feel about as vulnerable walking into a vet clinic these days as I do when I take my car into a mechanic. Pet owner's/lovers will do anything for their pets so they are at the mercy of the vet to charge them a fair price and not take advantage of them. I know that people often take the time to write reviews when they are upset with a service or retailer, etc., but I vow to take the time to write a good review if and when I find a vet who is more ethical and doesn't rip me off everytime I walk through the door! my dogs have seen dr. hiser for many, many years, and he has shown himself to be a knowledgable, caring, and compassionate vet time and time again. i love the fact that he doesn't take the expensive route first- he's much more ""let's try this first"" before suggesting needless or expensive and extensive testing. to me, this shows just as much care for the owner as for the pet. additionally, he spends a great deal of time with you making sure that you understand what is going on and what needs to be done. later in the day he is sometimes running quite a bit behind, but i never mind because i know he's giving everyone such great attention. and the staff? love them. they all know my babies by name, and really enjoy seeing them. this office is an absolute pleasure to deal with. please keep doing what you do so well- don't worry so much about the bottom line, because the great patient care and great word of mouth will take care of that! IGNORE the cons below this--- they were inadvertently added about ANOTHER richmond vet office. they don't belong on this review but i can't figure out how to remove them:( Read Less

My dog's last yearly checkup cost me $500 including everything Dr Rose said my dog ""needed"" .....Also they would not authorize Petmeds for his Rx for heartgard ....saying he needed to come in for a heartworm test even though they had just done one..... I also had a cat who was very obviously sick with lymphatic cancer(as per the vet I had come to my house to see her - after looking at Braoad St's labwork) Dr Rose instead of telling me she had cancer, gave haer a vitamin b shot and prescribed very expensive laser treatments for ARTHRITIS. She was NOT sick and WASTING AWAY because of ARTHRITIS. Therefore-my second opinion. I will not go there again. They lost a loyal customer in me today. I hear the vet in Church Hill is great and will not over charge you or charge you for unecessary treatments. Don't go to Broad ST Vet . Unless you have LOTS of money to throw away. Read Less

Eight years ago when I adopted a three-year-old Bouvier des Flanders, I made appointments with several veterinary hospitals to tour their facilities This was the only location where Uri trotted through the 'back' rooms happily to meet everyone as they bent over to love on her. She chose Broad Street Veterinary Hospital and I'm so glad she did! Although she's made many visits for some serious health issues and unpleasant treatments, Uri still loves to visit Dr. Rose and Dr. Hiser, as well as the rest of the wonderful staff. She literally drags me INTO the door and is always greeted with smiles and loving pets and rubs. Rather than putting her on a cold table, the docs get on the floor with her and with tender loving hands, they perform whatever exam is needed. When she faced health concerns, the doc gave me his home telephone number in case I needed him and the docs often have called me at home to check on her. Uri is treated as a valued family member, not a dog! Read Less

He's crazy. Movin' on. Read Less

We have been seeing Dr. Hiser for 4 years now and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. The staff is exceptional along with the care. My GSD goes there for both yearly maintenace as well for a recently acquired chronic condition. Dr. Hiser spends a lot of time with us, making sure we undertand all of our options. GSDs are not ""social butterflies"" but you would never know that by the way the staff treats my shepherd. I feel really good taking him there as he is always treated like royalty. If you want a vet who is going to work with you and undertand your dog and a staff who never forgets your name, BSVH is the place to go, bar none. I have heard they may be somewhat more expensive than the norm, but you definitely get what you pay for! Read Less

There is a lot of responsibilty to having a pet, an i would go NO OTHER PLACE THAN ""BROAD STREET AND DR. ROSE. JLK/ Richmond Read Less

When I first moved to RIchmond, I researched the local vets since I own two cats and two dogs and had been really lucky to have a great vet in Florida who gave me a multiple animal discount. This is one of the most highly respected practices in the city, so when my dog Max was due for his shots, I headed here. For $700, I could have taken Max back to Florida for the procedure. It's a really nice clinic and I liked all the people, but it was too pricey for me. Read Less

Read Less
