Staff is really invested in what they do. I went in to report an animal neglect case, as I couldn't get someone on the phone. The woman at the counter, a long-time volunteer, explained that the phone rings very quietly and that they were extremely busy that day. Regardless, they passed the message along and got an officer out to the site of the neglect. After that, I had a brief chat with the folks at the desk while my friend considered adopting, and all of them knew the animals by name, and clapped and cheered when an adopted animal left. So heartwarming to see folks in the animal welfare industry who care so deeply. Read Less

I have a lot of respect for RACC and the work that they do. My friends adopted two pitbull-type dogs from here over the years and they are the best dogs I've ever met. It can be a bit intimidating when you first walk through the kennels; it's austere, very loud, and sometimes smelly from so many stressed, homeless pets. But for such a high volume shelter they really seem to care for the animals they rescue and rehome. The dogs and cats all have names and a fact sheet about them on their cages. The staff and volunteers give them individual attention and get to know them to help potential adopters make informed decisions. The dogs have treat buckets on their cages and you're encouraged to reward good behavior with a snack. Friendly cats can be taken out of their cages and held with the help of a volunteer, but they make sure to label which pets aren't ready for adoption or are feral to keep both the animals and people safe. I got to spend a lot of time with the dog I was interested in to get to know her and make sure she was a good fit. I filled out a simple application, and they requested that I bring my second dog down to the shelter to meet her and make sure they got along. After that meeting I paid her adoption fee, which was very reasonable, and took her right home. She had not been spayed yet, so they gave me a date to bring her back for it to be done for free. I recently found a lost, healthy, boxer/mastiff mix with no collar. She is very playful outside but wont come inside where it's warm. Right now, she is in my backyard. I called the Richmond Animal Control so that she'll at least be out of the cold while the owner is being located. They told me someone would be coming by today. That was at 10:00am. It is now 6:45pm and no one has come. I called back an hour ago and was assured that an officer was on the way today. I understand a business being busy. What I do not understand is a business making false promises when the potential life of a lost animal is on the line. It will be below freezing tonight and I have no way of helping this dog stay warm. Read Less

This place is beyond wonderful. In October I did a foster- to- adopt for a young cat who had had a Raw Deal (hence her shelter name was Raw Deal). She had been living on the streets for some time when she was found without hair and with a terrible URI and was brought to RACC. The shelter cared for her and then I fostered for a few weeks until she regained her health and to ensure my 2 veteran rescue cats at home accepted her into our family. Two months later, she has totally blossomed, and now Lyanna (her new name) runs the household and has become the boss (our two male cats allowed this) around our place. She went from being a homeless 5 pound hairless sniffling pitiful kitty to a 8.5 pound long-haired buff colored happy feline. I have such admiration and respect for all of the staff particularly Robin (who was a tremendous help and was such a great resource for me). In another city this poor cat, who was in such poor health and condition when arriving at the shelter, may have been euthanized. Our city shelter gives every animal a chance and never euthanizes for space and that is something to be very proud of and grateful for and a special thank you goes to Director Christie Chip Peters for leading this facility!!!! I've become more involved with the organization and have fostered 2 rounds of kittens who were two young to be adopted. RACC staff deserve many allocades for the tremendous hard work they do for all of the animals that come to them in need. Thank you RACC for everything you do for those furry friends.Read Less

Then, just a few minutes ago, I called the emergency line to try to get a deceased kitty removed from my yard and the lady told me to just leave a message. Thanks for helping, you f***ing retard! God knows how long that poor kitty will be there. Read Less

My fiancé and I came in for a specific dog because of the chance of him being put down and it broke our hearts. Unfortunately, he was not a good fit with our current fur baby. After meeting several dogs, we finally found the perfect fit for our home and our Kyia girl with the amazing help of the staff. Newt, now Ace, is settling in nicely and he and Kyia are enjoying running and playing together. Thank you for all of your time and patience helping us add to our family!! Read Less

Read Less

Can't say enough good things about this place. To date, I've adopted four kittens from here and all four adoptions couldn't have been better experiences. The staff is great, they're involved in the community, always going the extra mile to organize events and get people in. The recent holiday foster was one example of the great work they do everyday. I love this place and I love my fur babies!

We came to the shelter to get a puppy. There was one there and she was so scared. We fell in love with her. She is not ours yet, as we are fostering her. She has to be neutered before we can adopt. She has a few medical issues preventing us from getting her fixed right now. But she is doing great. Once she is better we will have her fixed and then adopt her. The staff are wonderful and caring individuals. I will always get a shelter pup! Read Less
