The Cove

Suffolk, Virginia
General Info
After many years of serving the entire Hampton Roads region from various clinics, we’ve come together to create a very special veterinary hospital whose primary purpose is to deliver 24-hour care for pets and their families. What makes it special is that from experience, we’ve taken the best in progressive medicine and excellent service and blended it together to create a recipe for truly exceptional, collaborative care. This is a promise we live by, for every pet, family, and referring veterinarian.
By partnering with primary care veterinarians, The COVE is able to meet the needs of patients at any time of day or night, from emergency intervention to intensive care or overnight monitoring. And as board-certified specialists, we rely on the expertise of primary care veterinarians to know when one of their patients may benefit by our specific training or sophisticated, in-house diagnostic technologies to help care for a pet. This is what makes for a great collaborative relationship. What it really comes down to is there’s no better place in the region to obtain open, transparent, medical care for your pet, or collaborative, respectful, team-oriented services for your patients.
We operate under the following core values:
Collaboration – Compassion – Commitment – Community – Integrity

This isn't something I thought I would have to write so soon, but here it goes.  I brought my baby, Boots, into the Cove Tuesday night after he showed some signs of extreme breathing distress.  As soon as we walked in the front desk realized he wasn't doing so well and he was immediately taken to the back.  After a little while we were taken to a room where Dr. Schindler came and talked to us.  She delivered the hardest news I could have imagined.  That they were going to run some tests, but that the outlook was likely not good.  Everyone was so nice and understanding through this entire process, especially since I was in a state of shock I think.  Once I signed the estimate for the testing and the x-rays were done, she came back in the room and told me that her suspicions were correct and my sweet boy had a very aggressive cancer and was unfortunately not going to make it.  To be able to tell someone that with such compassion is not a common trait in this world but she was extremely gentle.  Once the determination was made that the only humane option was euthanasia, the staff was overwhelmingly accommodating and supporting.  My family and I were able to stay with him as long as we needed to say goodbye and were with him the entire time.  The staff all told me how sweet he was and how good he was being for everything and that he must have been such a loved boy.  They were right, he was very loved.  And I am forever grateful that in his last moments he was surrounded by his family and a doctor that seemed to love him right alongside us.  So, while this wasn't the night I had ever intended to have....the staff at the Cove made it as easy as they could have given the circumstances.  They are truly compassionate people and I am thankful they took care of him that night for us. I had to help my Mom make the difficult decision to put down her cat that we had had for 16 years over memorial day weekend, and unfortunately the veterinarians office I work for was going to be closed until Wednesday. There was no way she could wait that long , and I was nervous to have to handle putting to sleep our first family pet in a setting other than my office. I was immediately put at ease starting with my phone call inquiring if I could come in, Ariel answered all of my questions and was very kind. When I finally made it to The Cove they were waiting for us and put us into a room right away. They brought Pixie a blanket and bed and did not make us feel rushed at all. Everyone I dealt with that difficult day was so kind and caring. They made me feel comfortable, especially since I work at a vets office and thought I was going to be able to keep my composure, which I did not. I had to take my own cat to The Cove back in January for a urinary blockage and knew then that the staff was amazing. This visit just cemented that for me. Thank you so much ladies for all that you do, and for making such a sad day not so hard. Read Less

I 100% recommend The Cove for any veterinary emergencies. We recently brought our dog in because he was having a lot of trouble breathing and was unable to stand or walk on his own. They were able to see us immediately and upon arrival they rushed him back on a gurney, provided him with oxygen and were calm and collected while dealing with me (I was a mess). It was like being in a human ER. They treated me with absolute professionalism and were entirely sympathetic to my situation. After several tests that were done very quickly, it was apparent that my dogs kidneys were beginning to fail. They outlined a treatment plan for me and also offered some very helpful advice. They were honest with pricing and not pushy when it came to the best course of action and only ever had my dogs best interest at heart. When we decided that it was best to put him down (he was 14 and the treatments were very aggressive with a minimal chance of success), they were empathetic and kind and made a very difficult situation a lot more bearable. They really went above and beyond when it came time to let him pass and ensured his utmost comfort to the very end. They took care of all cremation procedures and provided a very nice monogrammed box and a molded footprint with his name stamped into it. I really can’t say enough about how much I appreciate everything that the staff did and how incredibly helpful they were. It was an extraordinarily difficult thing to say goodbye but I was so grateful for the team that handled the whole procedure. Really guys, thank you. Again, I highly recommend them for any pet emergencies, they really only have your pets best interest on their mind. I would give 10 stars if I could. Read Less

We had to use their services twice in this month, it was our first time thank goodness as emergencies are never good. The first was our rescue from over the summer, he was an old guy that no one would have ever taken, legs in every direction. He was a sweet boy and he had a good life with us but his hips finally went so we had to put him down. They asked if we wanted to be in the room, I would never let any animal cross over without being with them, no one wants to pass alone, they charged for the room. Then two weeks later our big dog wouldn't eat and what he did was up in minutes. I rushed him there, they spent more time working up estimates than working on my dog. I took him home, with a $300 + bill. The next morning Nansemond Vet Hospital rushed him in and it didn't take four xrays in the wrong area to figure out he had an obstruction in the stomach and intestine, went into surgery within two hours and it was removed and at the base price of the Cove. They were estimating $1500 to $2700 just for the overnight stay with fluids..no surgery quoted. Their staff is very nice but their emphasis on the all mighty dollar is over the top. Thank goodness and hopefully I won't need them again. Very disappointed. Read Less

It's great to have this place nearby should problems arise as they typically do at inconvenient hours. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and capable. They also have some of the best resources around. However be aware that while they will give you the best path forward for your pet it will almost always be the most expensive path too. When you are worried about your loved pet it can be hard to make informed and reasonable decisions, or ask questions about options and alternatives. Bottom line; definitely go there if you have a pet emergency, or need known quality care, but take someone who can think clearly or things can get expensive very quickly. Read Less

I've had to take my 3 lb Pomeranian to the Cove three times now over the past few years.  Once after an attack by another dog and twice for serious bouts with Pancreatitis.  Each time the staff were all wonderful and caring.  My baby and I were made to feel like we were the only ones who mattered while we were there.  On the two occasions when she had to be admitted, the doctors and staff called me several times a day to keep me updated on her progress and I was allowed to come in and visit her.  I appreciated being involved in every aspect of her care and felt like everything was explained to me thoroughly so I could make informed decisions.  I highly recommend the Cove to all my friends with fur babies. Ok so let's see where do I start.. I'll start with i had an appt set for her to get all her shots check up everything but she didn't make it so let's begin here :The Cove was one of the best and worst experiences of my life.. I had a six week old puppy named Jai and black lab whom I thought was sleeping way to much and barely was eating and I knew something was wrong with her.. So when I called the Cove Meghan at the front desk was very upfront about the cost of exam and how they will give and estimate and present treatment plans before anything is done and with it being and emergency care that is open 24/7 they are a bit more expensive (as would any ER for human care would be as oppose to an urgent care).. She was so helpful and told me to call her if I was coming..So I did calm Meghan back and let her know we're we're coming and they had Jai paperwork ready and the nurses (or vet techs I guess) came right out and ask what's going on and took my baby to the back paperwork was one page thank Goodness  and then they put us in the room to discuss what was going on with her.. So the Vet Tech and Dr. Cunnigham were very open and explained that she had worms and was getting anemic from then but the sooner we can get them out the better and have us a vet through treatment plan to maintain at home.. So unfortunately I had to return the next day she wasn't any better and started to develop this moan and I knew something had drastically changed and she was basically fighting for her life.. She ended up developing a life threading infection that wasn't parvo but since she loss so much blood to the worms (which the treatment did work and we were getting those worms out)she wasn't going to make it and we had to put her down.. This was the worst part she was only a baby my baby and Dr.Cunningham and the techs were very supportive and really cared and took their time with us and gave me as much time as I needed with her before i had to let her go.. I wasn't able to keep her ashes with me since it cost soooo much more and I was so hurt about it but they really did do a great job in keeping me informed and truly being a compassionate place. Everyone may not have gotten answers they needed based on some of the reviews but this doctor knew what was wrong from the jump but of course had to confirm with testing and didn't do a whole lot of things that we didn't need . She did exactly what she needed to do and got the answers we needed to get .. Thank you everyone for truly helping me through this time being pregnant and losing my baby girl Jai was a lot to process and still is.. Read Less

I decided to try this place based on other reviews and I found The Cove to be just as good as reviewed. The staff is very friendly and out going, I was confident in the advice I was given and the doctor took the time to explain everything to me thoroughly, and then explained it a second time for my son when he arrived. The office is very clean and doesn’t smell like a veterinary office. I could have taken my pet for a follow up visit with my usual vet, but I was so impressed with this office that I went back to them instead. I highly recommend this vet, especially since their emergency, after hours fee to walk in the door is basically the same as an office visit during regular hours at my vet. Don’t pay $200 just to walk in the door at other emergency vets! Read Less

We are exceptionally pleased with our experience at The Cove!We had to make an evening emergency room visit here a few days ago. One of our cats, Scrap, had a reaction to some medicine he was prescribed earlier at his regular vet. Turns out, thankfully, that the reaction looked much worse than it actually turned out to be. My wife had to take Scrap by herself because I was working (I met her there after a while), and she was understandably quite upset. The staff was awesome! They immediately went to work on figuring out what was wrong with Scrap, and reassuring my wife that her baby was going to be okay. By the time I got there, they had everything figured out and under control. They took the time to explain what happened, and why, and how to avoid it going forward. And, to top it all off, they didn't even charge us! I'm assuming that's because they didn't have to provide any 'real' treatments or tests, but wow! They very easily could have run some unnecessary tests and given unneeded medication or treatments, just to run up a bill, but they didn't. So, I put zero stock in the review that says they engage in that type of activity. Don't believe it at all.Lastly, even though we didn't pay them anything, and we aren't regular customers, they still called us the next day (or maybe the day after) just to check on Scrap and make sure everything was okay. You can't beat that type of service! The Cove is now solidly at the top of our list if our pets need emergency or specialty care. We will also wholeheartedly recommend them to friends and family. This use to be a vet I loved because of the compassion and how good the doctors were. ( Dr. Smalls) Those days are LONG gone. Now instead of compassion it is all about the money. First example a lady was in with her dog who had been attacked by another dog. She was crying because he had little funds. The dog needed meds and a e-collar. She could not afford the meds so they took them right out of her hands and left to go into the back. They did not even try and lower her bill, work with her or anything. She couldn't afford the e-collar which I know is super cheap for the vet to buy. Obviously the collar can not be used on another dog but right there they snatched the e-collar and took it in the back where they will have to throw it away. After 2 hours of a family dog being there because he was attacked by another dog they finally call us back. They didn't shave and clean any of the wounds in the 2 hours we were waiting. The doctor was the worst I have ever had to deal with. No bedside manner, beyond rude, and spoke to us like we were idiots. I will not post her full name but it starts with a F. Came in and said the dog would need a $6000.00 dollar surgery and another costly surgery in 5 weeks. While this is going on they would not even let us speak to the doc who would be performing the surgery not in person or by phone. We ended up having to put the dog to sleep. At this time their only worry of payment kicked in "before we put the dog down will you go ahead and pay." The over all experience was horrible. Long gone are the days of caring for the animal and being compassionate. Overall not happy with the service, the doctor, and the treatment of the people who are bringing a family member in as well as the treatment of the animal. THE MONEY SHOULD NOT BE MORE IMPORTANT THEn THE ANIMAL OR FAMILY! Read Less

So I received a referral to the Cove because my regular Vet was unable to assist when I brought in my kitten that had some type of infection on his mouth. Turns out it was dental floss that he got caught in his jaw and somehow swallowed and got caught in his throat. I was told he would probably need 2 surgeries.  I tried to bring him that day on Saturday afternoon and was told the wait could be up to 4/5 hours and that Sundays are the busiest day. So I left work early on Monday to bring him in the early afternoon. Fast forward we walk in and are immediately greeted. Its a very pleasant waiting area with lots of windows so its nice and bright. They have a TV and tons of magazines. They even provide bottled water and some candies to munch on. We waited less than 5 minutes before we were taken to a room. A nurse immediately came in and took all of our information that was not listed on the referral. She then took my kitten (Catboy) away. A doctor came in not too long after and explained what she thought needed to be done which included x-rays and some other things. She gave best and worst case scenarios.  The nurse came back in with an estimate to get consent. It was a bit pricey but not unrealistic for a doctors office. A short while later the nurse came back in to advise that they were able to get the floss out and it wouldn't require any surgeries or x-rays. Hallelujah! They came back in with a revised bill that included medicines that was cheaper than the original estimate that only included diagnostic. To say I was happy was an understatement. And to top it off we only spent 2 hours there. All in all I was very pleased with the Cove and their professionalism. I am very familiar with The Cove because Dr. Small, who is a cardiologist, did a magnificent job of taking care of my previous poodle. The staff at The Cove is caring, loving, welcoming, and is dedicated to providing the best possible care for your pet. I have a new puppy who was coughing and gagging and I was concerned that she may have something caught in her throat. When I called The Cove, the receptionist remembered me and my poodle who had recently died and was excited that I had gotten a new puppy. I described my puppy's cough and she told me to bring her in. When I got there the nurse immediately took us to an exam room and took my puppy's vitals, and I was given an estimate of the cost of the treatment. The nurse and doctor suspected that my dog had kennel cough from my description of her cough to the receptionist, so they wore protective garments to prevent transmitting my puppy's kennel cough to other patients. The exam verified their suspicions. The doctor prescribed a cough suppressant and an antibiotic, and x-rays were taken to establish a base line because the breed is very susceptible to trachea collapse. As is always their procedure, a nurse called me several days later to check on my pet. The care a pet receives at The Cove is second to none. I wish that they also offered primary care because there is not a veterinary hospital to compare with The Cove. I have had nine dogs and have been to many veterinary hospitals in Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Florida and The Cove is definitely the best.Read Less

Amazing staff who were so kind and understanding. We brought our dog Diesel in Monday night and the staff did their best with taking care of him as quickly as possible (spent 4 hours there but understandably there were other pets there needing treatment and one extreme emergency that had come in while we were there). They took their time trying to find the best treatment with our budget and gave Diesel the best care possible. Luckily Diesel is doing so much better thanks to the medicines and care he received. They even called us 2 days later to check up on how he was doing! Great staff and will definitely recommend to anyone with a pet emergency! Read Less

I would suggest to only come here as a last resort and carefully review the diagnostic and treatment options presented.  It was immediately clear to me and my family that the veterinarian, Lindsey DeFalco, was primarily interested in running up the number of tests and treatments done, and her diagnostic skills were lacking -- or she was being intentionally vague.  She would immediately cover the worst case scenarios with varying causes without medical evidence or tests to support her claims. After a series of tests, she was no more closer to coming to a diagnosis and recommended hospitalization and treatments without any basis. On another note, this facility seems to have extensive equipment and can have tests done quickly.  However, the in-house testing made a crucial error on our pet's lab results that led to a mistake in her condition and much unnecessary worry.  When visiting this pet hospital, be careful that you and your family are not exploited because of the situation you are in and sentimentality for your pet.Response to Business (See below):  It seems that this vet hospital puts considerable effort into developing reasonable sounding communications to explain away it's unethical and unscrupulous practices rather than focusing on improving their care for pets brought in by their owners.  In response to the inaccurate and misleading information below, my pet's regular veterinarian completed testing and found that there were no issues with my pet.  He concluded that the testing and diagnosis done on my pet mere hours prior was completely inaccurate. The staff was wonderful with their treatment of my dog Riley Thursday evening! While outside after dinner, she managed to rip her nail partially off. I knew it needed to come off. Since my vet office was closed, I headed to The Cove. The staff immediately assessed the injury. Since Riley's injury was not life threatening, we waited our turn. The Cove was very busy with serious illness' that resulted in difficult decisions for pet owners. This takes a toll on the staff. When it was Riley's turn, they were all smiles and positive. I admire their courage and strength. I appreciate the attention and love they gave Riley. Today Riley acts as if nothing has happened. Thank you very much for taking care of her! It means so much to me and my family that you are so close and took care of Riley's "emergency". Read Less

Went here b/c we had a minor emergency with Daisy (featured in my photo) and my current vet didn't have any openings for the day. Upon arrival it was very inviting. I don't know if the scent of the place is more amiable to Daisy but Daisy wasn't freaking out to leave like she usually does when we arrive to the vet. We were attended to as soon as I walked in. After filling out the paperwork and checking her in with her vitals, etc. We waited for just a little bit before we were brought in to a patient room. From there, the vet saw Daisy and was very careful about his inspection and gave a prescription. Long story short, Daisy is all better now.I've read the reviews before of what everyone else put and I can't help but to wonder if some were just very emotional about the whole ordeal of bringing your beloved family member to an emergency vet. Honestly, when I go to these places, I expect to pay a mint. That's just the nature of the business. All in all, the cost was more than reasonable and Daisy is healthy. To top this off, on Monday (brought her in on Friday) they called for a follow up to check up on her. All the staff there were very friendly and I'd have no problems going here for any emergency needs.Food Taste: 5Overall Service: 5Value of service to cost: 5Facility: 5Dog Friendly: um.. yes.. =)TL;DR - Good place imo. So a night of grooming landed us at the vet hospital.  I never thought that I would need to come here as I am very careful with my dog.  However, life is full of surprises as I found out.No thanks to me, my dog ended up with a laceration on her head as I was trying to cut down the top knot (I am still horrified thinking about it).  I drove to the hospital like a bat out of hell because my dog was bleeding significantly (and I do not deal with the sight of blood well).Upon checking in, she was taken away from me and placed into a kennel.  They asked if I was ok in giving her pain meds and I agreed.  Before they did any procedure, they came and asked if I was fine with it and let me know the price of the procedures. I very much appreciated that.  Overall, she had to get a few stitches and is now wearing a cone of shame.  They also sent us home with some meds.My experience was a great one.  They did come out and let me know what was going on eventually, but I would have liked them to give me a little more insight into how she was doing a little bit more--even if all she was doing was sleeping.  But that is just a minor annoyance.  It will not prevent me from coming back should I ever need emergency care.  The wait time was a bit long. We arrived at 12:30 and wasn't out until around 3 am I believe.  However, there were other patients there as they did a good job letting everyone know.  And hey its an emergency vet--just as you would wait at an actual emergency room I expected the wait time here at the emergency vet.  In closing, I am very pleased with the service I received and glad to see that they took great care of my dog.  She is feeling better and doing fine btw.  I would  recommend this place to a friend or family. Our sweet old schnauzer went into renal failure over the long weekend. Although we knew she was near the end, we didn't expect everything to crash so suddenly. We were finally at wit's end and Pepper was in complete misery, so it was time for us to make that hard decision we all dread. From the first phone contact on a Sunday at 4 until completion of her euthanasia procedure at 5, everyone was compassionate, efficient, and courteous. Given the heartbreaking circumstances, the staff handled everything perfectly. We couldn't possibly have gotten any better treatment for our family or our dear Pepper. The facilities were clean, quiet and private and our pup who has always been nervous around strangers seemed completely relaxed and comfortable through it all. Many thanks to The Cove for taking such wonderful care of all of us. Read Less

I cannot begin to express the level of compassion and caring that the staff at The Cove shows to the pets and families that enter the facility. Jenny at the front desk was ready for us when we came in the door. Emily came out immediately and triaged Cupid, my sweet tabby cat. Dr Fox offered several options and recommendations that were very reasonable. I was fortunate enough to have a pet that needed little in comparison to another family who was there and lost their pet today, but I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that the outpouring of true love for each animal is present in each person who works there. This is the place to take your pet 24/7 and know that you will receive competent, quality, and amazing care. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

I could have taken my pet for a follow up visit with my usual vet, but I was so impressed with this office that I went back to them instead.

I hope I never have to return but a great place if you need Emergency assistance for your pet. Read Less

They took their time trying to find the best treatment with our budget and gave Diesel the best care possible. Luckily Diesel is doing so much better thanks to the medicines and care he received.
