Several years ago my Shepherd was hit by a driver who was on his phone. We took him to an emergency hospital on Lynnhaven pkwy. They charged my college age son almost $500 and sent him home with bandaids on a few shaved areas where he had "raspberries"... skin scrapes. They put a cone on his head and prescribed pain meds. That night I see blood on the tile and find he has a wound that is weeping. My son takes him back to the ER and they keep him in the back for over 2 hrs. Then when my son asks what's going on they say he has skin allergies and want to prescribe medicine. The technician hadn't heard a word said about the accident or the weeping wound. My son left and we took him to our regular veterinary practice the following day.  The vet we saw was a senior partner and very rude. She muzzled our young shepherd and was unable to speak or even look at him. I struggled to understand her as she said she would sacrifice her lunch to perform surgery on him to repair a tear in his left hip; it wasn't bleeding but draining or leaking. The surgery, and like a pushy salesman we had to decide that very minute, was over $800. I told her we didn't even know who she was (lol) and we would wait for our regular vet. So we had an appt for the next morning. That vet was Dr. Chris Imrich. He believed that the surgery was a wrong decision because too much time had passed and the skin was necrotic, meaning it the tissue had died. Never criticizing the senior vet ( a class act ), he simply stated he had a different opinion and so we began his treatment plan. The idea was to flush the wound out several times a day with sterile water and keep him on antibiotics until the wound began to heal. We went to see Dr. Chris every other day so he could cut off the necrotic tissue and he was more than fair in his fees. The wound,  once fully exposed after his hair was trimmed away, was ghastly and quite long- about 18-20" in length. After a couple of weeks it began to heal and we tapered our visits down to finally be released from veterinary care. It was a scary experience but Dr. Chris was great. He left that practice and we had no idea where he went. So for 2 years we took Auggie to Acredale but continued to look for other vets. Imagine my delight to see Dr. Chris in the photo for Beach Pet! Auggie has been put on some awful prescription food at $100 a bag and it wasn't helping him, so I made an appointment with Beach Pet and had all his records moved. Dr. Chris discovered Auggie had a thyroid issue and prescribed him appropriate and affordable medicine. Auggie began to eat regular food and lose weight and his hair grew back...it was the second time Dr.Chris had come to our rescue.The staff are all great people too! They seem to love our animals as we do and the pets know this. I saw another vet there for daughter's adopted senior terrier pup who had bad teeth. She couldn't afford the dental work at beach pet but the vet helped her with recommendations for cheap dental work. They're just a pet owner's dream team!Thanks Beach Pet! Read Less

I'm not happy with Beach Pet Hospital I took my dog in yesterday..we had an appt...they made us wait a looong time to attend us...when we finally made it to the room...guess what...they made us wait even more in there...I was with a restless kid and dog...waiting and waiting...it should have been in and out appt. And when the vet assistand showed up..she took like 5 minutes just talking/selling their pharmacy online....I was patiently waiting the whole time,I must add...well..the Vet finally showed up...for NOT EVEN 3 minutes!!!! I didnt see her do amything to my dog...just came to say he was ready to go..then I asked an estimate for a procedure and she said let me get for you and left!!!! She never came back to ask if there was any other questions about my dog, NO recommendations... It was disrespectful..we are paying for a service..it'a not for free...after waiting that long patiently...I was expecting at least a good service. We are taking our "business" somewhere else... Hice purchased the petsmart "wellness" plan and it was worthless when my Weimaraner Lexi got really ill this place was honest and didn't run any un necessary tests like other places do just for profit. They told me if she didnt respond to the treatment that meant best bet was votad put down because she was suffering greatly. At 2 years old I was heartbroken but knew it was true, as she was suffering from a rare immune disorder. Luckily the next day they I picked her up and 5 years later here she is. We had a great experience BPH. This was our first time going there. Our dog has a tumor that needs removal. The staff and vet were very nice and they gave us estimates before doing anything. They never pressured us to do anything we didn't want to do. I was also very happy with the cost. Based on an experience with another vet hospital, I was expecting a ridiculously high estimate. We had our first visit at Beach Pet with Dr Upchurch over the weekend. After spending over 8 years in Suffolk with a vet we loved we hadn't had much luck in Virginia Beach. Based on a friend's recommendation, we made an appointment for our 10 year old dog Max. He had several issues we wanted to discuss and Dr. Upchurch and the tech were very thorough, caring and spent a lot of time with us. There are no words to say how wonderful this place is! One week ago our dog suddenly seemed really sick. Petsmart (where we had an account) said they were all booked for the week and refused to try and get us in - saying they only do preventative care. My sister takes her cats to Beach Pet and loves it - so we called them up. They took us in immediately. They got on the floor with our dog (Bruce) and even stayed with him in the room while we went to look at x-rays. They loved him from the moment he stepped in there and they had never seen him before. Unfortunately we found out that he had terminal cancer and didn't have much time. The last appointment we had at Beach Pet was only our third but you would have never known. The DR was down on the ground with Bruce, petting him, giving him treats and loving him as we said goodbye. The entire staff was so wonderful and we are kicking ourselves for not taking Bruce to Beach Pet since day one! Any other animal we have will go here. Dr. Imrich even called us at night or the weekends on his time off to see how Bruce was doing prior to his passing. I would recommend them to everyone! Read Less

I called to make an appointment for my nine month old puppy who, with the rising temperatures, has become lethargic and seems to be breathing heavy all of the time. I asked if this was something I should just bring her in for, or if i would have to make an appointment. I received no answers and after describing the state of my dog, I was passed on the phone to another person who i then had to describe to what was happening again. After saying it all another time, I was passed on the phone AGAIN, by this time, repeating myself the THIRD time, im nearly in tears describing my fears of what could be going on with my dog, and just wanting to know if i should bring her in that evening. This time at least I was asked how long its been going on, BUT THEN, TO MY DISBELIEF, I WAS PASSED ON THE PHONE AGAIN! finally, this last girl was just going to schedule an appointment but honestly I was so frustrated that I could not anymore. I had not brought her in before, although my partner did when she was a newborn to get medications and vaccines, and now I am not sure this is the right place to take my dog for more serious issues that might come up in her life. I cannot say enough good things about the Veterinarians and staff at Beach Pet Hospital. We moved here over the summer, and when my cat Bear was sick we needed to find a new vet right away. I am so happy I chose Beach Pet. We saw Dr. Imrich and then worked more extensively with Dr. Laurence and I have no complaints. Every step of the way I felt supported and respected and never pressured to agree to any interventions or treatments. It is hard to make decisions about the steps to take when a pet is ill, and I feel like Dr. Laurence completely understood all of the factors I had to weigh when making decisions. Unfortunately, the treatments we did try did not help and we had to put Bear to sleep the week before Thanksgiving. My cat Azumi was ill and considering her age and our finances I was worried they'd tell me we had to put her to sleep. My last two rescues has similar symptoms and suffered. I dropped off newspapers and the front desk woman was grateful they use them for cleanup in pet cratesThis was my first visit and it was a bit of a wait very busy day. However we were greeted immediately and my Azumi was well cared for, without the pushy salesman type of vet attitude. He was very sweet to Azumi as was the staff and she got testing, meds and has recovered. I was both relieved at the pricing and swift service once we got in the room. We loved the full size fish tank that appeared well cared for. I will definitely return,my only complaint is it's an awkward traffic pattern but they cant control that the service and pricing make up for it. 5 stars! Read Less

I agree with Jessica G regarding: VET being MONEY HUNGRY. I, like most pet owners, love my pet-at any expense. I found that Beach Pet took full advantage of the love that I have for my furkid, and made up charges as they went along. Additionally, others have commented on the rude office staff.. Its all true folks.  My dog is in a lot of pain, and I was MORTIFIED by the rude front desk person when I first attempted to make an appointment. From there I should have known better than to actually go in....while on the phone - I asked to speak with her supervisor in an effort to help my dog, and we all know what happened when the supervisor came to the phone, fully equipped with one side of the story, she did not have one nice thing to provide in an effort to help my sick pooch. I've been to vets before and just felt like they were getting me in and out. These guys really made me and my pup feel special. Very professional and they explained what they were doing and why. I am the Practice Manager at the Virginia Beach Veterinary Hospital, and we had a very good client of ours come in today with his sick duck (he drives all the way from Newsoms, VA). Unfortunately, we couldn't see him because our exotic vets are both out of town. This brings me to why I am writing a review for another local veterinary hospital. It isn't often that a competing hospital would go out of their way to accommodate the needs of another hospital's patient. Beach Pet did that today. They have often done that for us. If we needed a product in a pinch or a vaccine we don't normally carry, they are always willing to help out. Today though they went above and beyond! Even though they were just as busy as we were with their own clients and patients, they were willing to fit in our sick duck. I relocated to VB from Richmond. My min poodle has been going to the same vet for 13 years. My poodle has a sensitive gut, so he doesn't like a lot of change with food or medications. Beach Pet stepped right in where my previous vet left off. I appreciate that the physicians and staff allow me time to process information they give me on my poodle. There is no pressure. They are thorough and knowledgable on pros/cons of medications and procedures. Communication and having detailed information on any visits makes the process even smoother. My black lab went to Beach Pet for almost 13 years, and they are the most compassionate Drs and staff I could ask for. We had to put him down this week, and the Beach Pet staff couldn't have been more professional and genuinely concerned about my dog's comfort, as well as how we were coping with the loss. I had to find a new vet when I recently moved to the area and was referred here by a few friends. They are one of the only AAHA certified vets I've ever come across and I was really satisfied with our visit and the thoroughness of our examination. Our vet was great with my little rescue mix who gets understandably nervous during exams. The cost of the exam was reasonable (not the least nor most expensive) and the vet took her time with us and answered all of my questions without making me feel rushed. We've only visited once so far but I was highly impressed with the friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the facility, our vet exam, and our overall experience. I had been a long time customer of Beach Pet. I had been bringing my dog there for 6 years. This past May I noticed my dog had blood in his stool, as most people would be I was concerned so I took him in for an exam I was told by Dr. Imrich he probably had a worm of sorts in his stool. I was given some powder and antibiotics. It did not clear up and I brought him back in after he had hurt himself jumping off furniture about two weeks later when I addressed the blood again. I was given more antibiotics this time two weeks worth because obviously when theres a problem throw more antibiotics at it. Also was told my dog had a shoulder strain he said a few days rest he would be fine. Nope. My dog remained with alot of pain and did not have full range of motion, and would throw fits if he moved his neck incorrectly. Why I could figure out that it was a neck issue and Dr. Im Rich could not is beyond me. So I brought him back in two days later and asked for a different vet.Thankfully Dr. Upchurch actually listened and did an xray showing inflammation in his spine. He was given pain killers and a sedative so that he wouldn't move too much. A third trip shortly after proved the staff still to be incompetent as the blood was still there. I PCSed shortly after. Took my dog to the military vet where they had the sense to do a colonoscopy finding a tumor just inside of his rectum. I was told finding this tumor even two months ago would have been greatly beneficial for my dogs health not that Dr. Im Rich would care. In short Beach Pet is far over priced for what they offer, shop around for a vet. Oh and they have a crappy looking fake water fall thats been without water for about a year or so. Either fix it or take it down.Read Less

Won't go back. The vet we saw was very very nice, seemed knowledgeable, and seemed to care about our issues. However dealing with the office staff has caused me so many additional hours of headache that I will never go back to Beach Pet Hospital. I needed the prescription for my dog to be sent to my pharmacy, but the office staff said their policy is that they do not fax prescriptions. So because they would only send it via mail, I had to wait a week for the pharmacy to get the prescription and send it to me. That's a week that my dog had to be in pain because we couldn't get her medications. The vet a Beach Pet Hospital referred me to a specialist vet, and I needed Beach Pet to send my dog's records to the specialist. I called and asked for that to be faxed 3 times on 3 different days, each time the office staff said they would do it, but the specialist never got the records. It shouldn't have taken hours of my time and multiple phone calls to get my dog's prescription or records. Ive been to plenty of other vet offices and never had this level of difficulty. I'm thankful everyday for Beach Pet Hospital. My cat, Frank, had been ill for some time and visits to other vets weren't helping.  Bills were mounting and my furry boy was withering away. I finally came to Yelp and decided to go Beach Pet Hospital before I lost my handsome Siamese. Best decision ever!! Within 5 minutes of a physical exam of my cat, the vet was able to give me a tentative diagnosis. Granted, it was not good news, as he surmised intestinal lymphoma was to blame for my pets health problems. However, where other vets were quick to do (and charge) for blood tests and x-rays only to make me wait a week for results, all of Frank's tests were done in-house with results available within a half hour. Not only that, the doctor had a great bedside manner, even when dealing with the choice of treatment or further diagnostics. I opted for an ultrasound to confirm the cancer diagnosis and was surprised that it would only cost a mere $150 - other vets had quoted me higher and needed me to take him elsewhere for the testing. While it is painful to know that I may lose my furry kid of 14 years, I know he is in good hands. I knew I had made the right decision walking through the door. The office looked like a doctor's office for animals, much like a pediatrician's office looks like a place for kids. There was even a special "cat-friendly entrance".  I've already referred a friend, who is equally as happy with Beach Pet Hospial; and, she travels from Norfolk for the special care and attention they give to pet and owner. If you read this, do not hesitate - book an appointment with them. There prices are reasonable, but I swear I'd pay double for the quality of care my Frank is getting. I  Beach Pet Hospital! Honestly people were friendly and the place was clean and I might be biased because my previous vet from Maine was so so fantastic and caring for my dog and I always felt involved and heard by the staff, and they always were a little extra gentle. My dog loved them all. That was not the case here.My dog is a rescue and had a traumatic first year of life. She is extremely friendly and has gained so much trust for strangers and overcome many of her "skittish" behaviors although we still work with her every day. I let everyone who work with her know this first as they greet her. I also let them know due to some surgeries and trauma she does not like anyone near her back end. So because she shied away from a thermometer going up her bottom they had to take her out back so that they could have more than one body help. Anyone who has a pet with a tramautic past knows that separation is a big issue, and that having two or more new people in a new environment in your space is a big issue, and that all of that combined with someone trying to stick something up her butt especially when you almost had a leg amputated and spent most of your first few months either fighting for life or being prodded and poked by a shelter vet, biggest issue. I could hear her struggle behind the closed door from my room but was unable to help her, or them for that matter. She didn't bite anyone as far as I know but was vocal and probably snapped to just let them know that what yet did was not okay. She was nervous and I heard her yet again as they did the needles. She did not ever act like this with me with my previous vet who was able to vaccinate and clip nails and get a temp with me in the room, without any help! Then they proceeded to tell me she needs a lot more training (granted we take her out  often and are constantly working with her and That I shared her background and her hesitation with her back end)! I just felt like crying because it was supposed to be a quick yearly and ear exam. I didn't want to have to defend my dogs behavior when I felt I had explained her circumstances already. I felt bad for the vet and the tech but I felt worse for my dog.When they brought here back in to me she was completely afraid of the vet who was pleasant but acted as though I didn't hear anything that they had said or how badly the experience was. I heard everything behind the door I heard them say how she wasn't going to come back and how bad everything went and talk bad about her and myself. Then come back and act as though nothing had happened, at least the nurse was honest about it when she said that went very chaotic. I just wanted to cry because I couldn't help. I want a vet and staff to listen to me when I speak with them and hear what I am saying. And that just wasn't the case today. They didn't even take an extra minute to let her get comfortable with them or examine her body and paws before doing the most traumatic thing(for her). I will continue to look for a vet in Virginia beach who will hear my concerns and validate them. And specifically for a vet who will be able to do the entire check up in the room with me. The thing I disliked most is that I could hear her pain and their struggle but was helpless. Read Less

My first five star review. My husband and I just adopted so we took our cat there to get a check up. The inside was really nice and clean. The vet assistants were nice and the vet was very friendly and answered our questions while taking the time to make sure we understood without seeming impatient. We had our cat checked for earmites and they actually let us go back to the scope and see them. Really open and friendly staff, made us feel like we were getting good information/advice. The cost for his check up and some ear mite medication was about $150, a bit pricey but for the service and feel of the place I was fine with that. I would definitely go back. Read Less

If I could give them a hundred stars, I would. The first time I walked into the office, I held my dog's body, limp and lifeless, and she was on the brink of death. She had sepsis. They took action instantly and saved her. They were informative and made no promises. They gave saving her all they had, and lucky for us, it was enough. We've been with them ever since. Since that happened a year and a half ago. They have discovered a heart murmur that is causing heart failure in another dog of ours. They also performed surgery removing a rare type of mast cell tumor on the dog they initially saved.They were also amazing and informative when we brought our bearded dragon in for a check up.I trust this office and this staff wholeheartedly. Had to rush my 13 week old Golden Retriever puppy here on Saturday morning.  She was bitten by a raccoon in our backyard :(As soon as we arrived with the puppy in a towel, they took us straight back to a room and immediately administered care to my pup.  She was hurt pretty badly, they kept us informed of every single procedure.She had to stay through the weekend, and I get to pick her up this evening.  They were so caring, compassionate, and professional.  I owe them so much for taking such good care of my pup.  They let us go in after hours and visit with her.  They called us through out the weekend and kept us updated about her also.  It was just above and beyond anything I have seen before.Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
