I am very disappointed in this establishment. I wanted to leave Banfield due to the poor service and high cost at my cat's November annual check-up. In March, this vet said they could do my cat's nail trims, without re-doing the annual physical, if they could get my cat's records from Banfield. They got them, i got her nails trimmed. Then today, i made apt for 5 week nail trim for 3 pm, no problem. Until i just got a call back saying nope, not without re-doing the annual physical. Ugh!! They then said they could refer me to someone else, but still have not done so. Read Less

This place is incredible. I brought my 15 yr old dog, Ginger, there until her passing, 7 years ago. She was very sick and the way they handled the whole affair was personal, giving and caring. The staff and doctors were remarkable and they even sent us a sympathy card with all employees personal signatures & comments. The year before Ginger past she gave birth. It was the only liter she ever had & she was 14 yrs old. She had 2 girls, Chloe & Tuaca. They have been to Great Neck Vet. only, with Dr. Gale. She is fabulous. Gentle but firm all in one. Recently I and several others rescued a dog that was running loose in the middle of a very busy Shore Dr. We rushed this animal in the office and they immediately attended the needs of the animal until he was stable enough for the SPCA to pick him up. We explained the situation to them & i expected them to ask who was going to pay for the visit. THEY NEVER DID. THEY SAVED THIS ANIMALS LIFE WITHOUT COMPENSATION. This was an exhausting, emotional, & frustrating event made better by the kindness & generosity of Great Neck Veterinary. Thank You All over & over again. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 10 stars Read Less

When Max, our beautiful orange tabby cat, got sick, our veterinarian did everything she could to identify the problem and put him on the road to recovery. There was genuine concern on her face and the staff reflected that attitude as well. She accurately identified and effectively treated the root cause of Max's illness. To our delight, our precious Max fully recovered. It was a joyous day when my husband and I put him in his carrier to return home to enjoy life with us and his cat family. Ridiculously expensive. Find another place. Need a flea treatment, supplements, or meds for your dog? Do it yourself and save a bunch of $$$. These people will charge you 3x or more the cost of buying/finding the supplies online or in the pet store. I absolutely love this office for my two cats. My one cat had a small emergency in January and they were concerned for her health so they wasted no time referring us to a specialist at another facility. They didn't do any tests that they said they knew the other Vet would do so we wouldn't be made to pay twice. Just out to get your money! Like many vets, these people try to diagnose your dog with numerous life threatening diseases they don't have. I ended up getting a plethora of tests done only to be told my dog was fine $700 later. Then I call to get them one shot and they want to charge $50 per dog plus the cost of the vaccine. I also ask for a refill on flea and tick and they refuse without seeing the dogs and charging even more. Office staff was rude and told me they weren't a pharmacy. I am so sorry for your loss. Everyone at our office understands how hard it is to lose a child. That grief was obviously compounded by the poor service you received. I apologize that we were not there when you needed us. It is always frustrating when lab results don't provide enough information. Sometimes getting the answers needed requires more invasive testing, which most cats will not tolerate without anesthesia. (an easier way had already been attempted unsuccessfully) Unfortunately when annual exams are not performed every year, new complicating problems can be found and add up (like heart issues etc) These should be evaluated before anesthesia to avoid even worse outcomes. We try to mitigate the cost as much as possible by not charging for our in house evaluation of a mass when we determine it needs to go the the lab for a specialist evaluation. Sadly many cancers grow quickly and can be unpredictable. We always feel the tummy as part of our examination and you are certainly right, in a small kitty a large mass is usually obvious. I want you to know we are using your feedback to improve so that none of our clients ever feel that we don't care. This includes looking at our phone procedures so that no messages fall through the cracks. We offer housecall appointments 2 days a week and in special cases like this one so we would have been happy to accomodate you. Our last records were of a phone call a month after your visit which indicated that this Mimi was doing well at home, surgery was a consideration but the mass wasn't really bothering her. We should have reached out to you again. We have also contacted our IT person to try to understand how we could have possibly missed 2 emails. We are addressing that failure as well. I regret that I found this situation incidentally on line as we take your concerns very seriously. Our entire office realizes that our lack of communication has let you and your family down. We are glad to now understand where the problems occurred so that we can make every effort to correct them. I hope that you know how truly sorry we are that we failed you and Mimi. PS. was not allowed to say all I needed to in a response and could not post this without a rating so I stuck to the middle of the road to neither add to or take away. Read Less

Between my two cats I started going to Great Neck Vet when they first opened around 1993. On our last visit about a month or two ago, they looked at a syst my 19 year old cat had for many years, that had never changed size but recently started bleeding. They took a sample and told me that was inconclusive, and they would need to send it to the lab for results for an additional $145,so wanting to know she was okay, I agreed. They called me two days later and said that was also inconclusive, and it would cost $1100 to do pre-surgery work up and surgery to remove it, (rather than give local anesthesia and valium) as the syst was basically hanging off the side of the neck area. We were also there for routine exam and vaccines. We opted not to have the surgery with the cat being so tiny and so old, and a month later another vet found a large tumor in her stomach which was never even checked during the routine exam or analyzed by Great Neck Vet. She only weighed 5 1/2 lbs, and the tumor was very large...how did they miss that? Then when I called to ask about GN Vet coming to the house to put her down weeks later, they never called me back! Unbelievable how the service has gone down hill hard and fast, and all they care about is money...totally lost the meaning of why they are there. I'll certainly never go back, and my sister and several friends who also know about my experience have stopped going there as well. There are too many good vets who care about animals and their owners to put up with this! Being totally ignored after 2 emails and an urgent phone call regarding putting her down was the worse move they could have ever made with me. (even though I don't believe they care at all ...evidently not because they still haven't called back) I am even fine with my dear cat being gone...she lived a long, happy, loving life but that treatment she received toward the end with Great Neck Vet was inexcusable! Our 12 year old chocolate lab Cody was diagnosed with two forms of cancer back in October of 2010 and Dr Hollowell and her staff were there to help us with the tough decisions we needed to make for Cody. They went above and beyond anyone would have expected. Always answering our questions, scheduling his appointments, and working closely with his oncologists at NC State. I will let you know this, there isn't enough space here for me to tell you all of the kindness, compassion and professionalism that Dr Hollowell and her staff have shown towards myself, my husband and more importantly my dogs in the past several months. My daughter was walking her 12 week old puppy when he was attacked by 2 pit bulls. We brought him to Dr. Hollowell at Great Neck Vet. He was in very bad shape; we were not sure he was going to make it because of his many puncture wounds and a leg we were not sure he would keep. Dr Hollowell and her professional staff gave our puppy and our family such loving care. She made herself available to us 24 hours a day to answer any questions or concerns we had. Over the Easter weekend, he had an infection and in order to get it under control, she kept at her clinic in a sterile environment. She met me at the clinic once a day so I could visit with our little guy and we were finally able to bring him home that Sunday :) She preformed a surgery on his leg that to this day amazes me. I still have no idea how she reconnected the skin to close up his wounds with minimal scarring. She is a miracle worker!! It has been about 2 months since the attack and if you saw our puppy, with the exception of one tiny scar, you would never know all he has been through. Thank you for saving his life and for saving his leg. We love you! Read Less

Let me start off by saying that I have had some horrible experiences with other vets in the area. The first vet I went to told me that my dog needed surgery that was going to cost me $1100.00 for something that was ""cosmetic"" basically. She was horrible and I left there and went to another vet that seems very ""popular"" around here but they were rude. I have two dogs that weigh 100-pounds each and they hate going inside and these people at this place would just stare at me when I was trying to get my dog in the door, never got up to help or get a tech to help me get them in the door making me feel like an idiot. My female dog hates the scale and this place's staff would get rude with me and tell me she ""has to get on there if she wants to or not."" Needless to say I left that place and found Dr. Gail McHugh at Great Neck Vet. I have never had a bad experience in my life. WHen I have to bring both dogs in it is struggle wrangling those two by myself. I call ahead and they actually have someone waiting for me to meet me at my truck to help me get them in. They always put me in a separate room and get me out of the lobby with my two big hounds. Dr. McHugh always makes me feel I'm taking good care of my dogs and I love the ways she gets on the floor with them and talks to them. It is so cute. Last year my dog killed a vole, ate it, and got a taperworm. We noticed it over the weekend that these worms were hanging out. We were totally freaked. I called the number and a doctor called me back right away and calmed me down a bit and they saw me first thing in the morning on Monday as she told me it wasn't an emergency. So a few weeks ago my dog killed a squirrel. I called them because I was so worried about the experience of last year and they called me back right away and Judy talked to me for about 20 mins or so reassuring me that my dog would be okay and if he did get sick to bring him in right away. I love this place. They don't make me feel stupid and don't make get tests/medicines I don't need. I always ask up front how much something is going to be and if I feel that it is not necessary they never make me feel bad about it. I love this place and Dr. McHugh is the best! My female is a little bit tempermental sometimes but she likes Dr. McHugh which is huge! Most of the time she walks into the office on her own and I don't need help. I will be coming to Great Neck Vet for all my dogs' needs for a long time! Oh yeah and one more thing. One year my dogs both either ate something bad in the yard or they caught something from doggie daycare. They were really sick with vomiting and diarrhea. My female got over it but my male got very lethargic and stopped eating and drinking. I called and they took him in first thing. When i got there, the receptionist at the time saw how sick he was and put me in a room right away. Then she came back in with a blanket for him to lie down on because he was so sick. I thought that was such a nice thing to do. Read Less

We have been customers here for the last several years; and have seen some positives and negatives. The new owner, Dr. Hallowell, seems to be more interested in expanding her businesses than in keeping current clients satisfied in my opinion. She should probably expand her waiting room; if you ask me. It's very crowded and difficult to sit in with a sick or agitated dog/cat. Feedback is NOT well received here and their prices are high for what you get. While, we have had some good experiences, the most disturbing to me was the missed diagnoses on my senior dog; not one but two potentially life threatening situations, that were brushed off by two vets we saw there. We have been very disturbed that the vets do not appear to be as schooled in diagnosing patients. Perhaps, we should've seen some of the more experienced ones. We are looking to switch now. Read Less

When I took my dogs there over the course of a few months, I found Patterson and Connelly both to be very standoffish and unhelpful. The doctors never call you back when you call for followup questions after your visit, and it almost seems like they choose their diagnoses at random. They are almost always hurried and talk to you like you are a child. I cant prove it but I think they tell their staff to come in if you stay too long asking questions about your pet, and ""remind"" the doc about surgery or a call or something.. Because it has happened almost every visit, a tech will come in and point at her watch, giving the doctor an excuse to leave.. They get very angry if you ask too many questions. And why are there absolutely no males there? That isnt a big deal but it is odd. No male doctors, techs, staff, anywhere. Makes me wonder if the owners dont like men which would explain why I am treated the way I am each time I go in.. Well I stopped going a long time ago and recommend everyone else do the same. But today we took 2 cats to see about ear mites. We saw Dr. Patterson. She told us they did not have mites and insisted that we buy revolution which is a flea prevention that you use once a month at $20 for each cat. They are indoor cats and we have never had a flea problem. The price for this visit was outrageous! We paid $250 to find out that neither cat has ear mites. We were trying to be good pet owners. But at $250 we will never go back. They looked at the ear wax under a microscope, sold us some ear wash and showed us how to use it. They even charged for showing us how to do the ear wash!

We have been customers at Great Neck Vet since 1993 when Dr. Debra Thomas owned the business. We had a cat for 13 years that we only took to this business. DO NOT go here. It has really gone down hill with the new owners!! Read Less
