Dr. Bates and Staff are very caring. They took great care of our little Sarah when she was feeling poorly and wouldn't eat. He gave us a few ideas and treated her for the most likely cause without charging us for a bunch of costly tests right away.
He gave her an injection of steroid and antihistamine, and within a few hours she was already back to her beagle-y self.
And with two locations (this and their Abingdon office) we know our babies will be well cared for.

Although I appreciate the bedside manner of the staff, it's clear after 2 visits that they are pros at running up a bill with unneeded tests and medication. I brought my cat in for a runny nose and sneezing. The Dr started doing all kinds of test without telling me what he was doing. They tried to charge me $60 for a glaucoma test. I refused to pay it. He gave my cat 2 shots that were $63 a piece. I will not be returning to this vet. I knew my cat had an upper respiratory infection and needed a round of antibiotics. Not $400 worth of senseless test without my permission.

I respect and trust he and his staff so much that I drive from Norfolk for the care needed. They have gone out of their way so many times throughout the years to help us in both routine and emergency care, and I really do appreciate it immensely.

So glad I found Dr. Bates and his wonderful staff! Their office is so caring and efficient. My pets love them. I have been to other local Veterinary Offices and was not pleased. Dr. Bates takes his time and explains everything as he goes along. I have never felt that "rushed examination visit" from him. You can tell he truly cares about his pet patients and their families. The ladies in the office are also good to call with updates (if the pet has to be left at the office--which I LOVE!) And, call with full information and reminders. Can't say enough good things about this office!

James City Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Bates saw my dog on an emergency basis to have a bleeding mass removed. The vet I was previously going to advised that I would have to wait two to four weeks before my dog's mass could be removed because they wanted to give my dog a flu shot before they would do surgery. Dr. Bates was very helpful and understanding of my dog being in much discomfort because of the mass, and agreed to take her in that day to remove it. This was a god send because my dog was very unhappy and uncomfortable, but now we should be able to have a peaceful holiday. The office staff was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Thank you Dr. Bates and James City Veterinary Clinic!
Dr Bates just did a life or death surgery on my senior dog...this was a godsend and my dog has fantastic results...we are very grateful for dr bates and the wonderful staff at James city vet clinic!!

Highly recommend James City Veterinary Clinic! We boarded our dog there during our holiday travels and he was very well taken care of. He got lots of individual attention and we had peace of mind while away from our little buddy. Routine care there is also excellent, and the staff is wonderful. It's a great place for pet care!

We have had such a great experience with the James City Vet Clinic. The people that work there are so compassionate and helpful. We have 2 Large old Labradors and recently one fell down the stairs. I was so worried about her. Amy at the front desk got us in right away . The Doctor was gentle and through. He gave us several options and a itemized list of possible expenses. Plus they told us about the coupons on their website for discounts and other ways to receive discounts. We really like this clinic and give it 5 stars.

My experience at James City Vet was definitely satisfactory.
Although the initial quote for the cost of services made my head spin, Dr. Bates and the team were very flexible with helping me cross some tests and medications off the list. Veterinary bills are always going to hurt the checkbook a little, but the vet team made it more bearable.
During my cat's dental procedure, he wasn't quick to extract teeth, something I was concerned about. Instead, he chose a less invasive solution, which I greatly appreciated.
Dr. Bates is also a pretty funny man who doesn't fail to entertain you during the visit.
And the lady at the desk complimented my cat and told me how lovely he is... That doesn't hurt. :)

I have an older dog, he's 10 now and we're in that process of moving between states. Somehow he injured his foot and they immediately found time for us. My poor pup has never hurt himself before so I was pretty nervous but the entire experience from the moment I walked in from the front desk to the Vet one on one time was amazing. I felt like I had been going there for years in about 20 minutes. My dog even loved the staff and he's a pretty hard sell considering he's basically a grumpy old man. Needless to say I'm impressed. I only wish I had found this place sooner before the impending move.

We have two Scottish Terriers. Both dogs love going to the clinic and being with Dr. Bates and his staff. We have boarded them successfully there, too. Both dogs recuperated well from their "birth control" surgeries. Both dogs love the attention that they receive by all at the clinic.
Dr. Bates keeps a close eye on our two Scotties and recommended a weight control diet for them. Both dogs love the kibble and have "better bowel habits" since switching to the Satiety diet.

An excellent clinic with delightful staff. I had no problems scheduling an appointment, and I left with a confident understanding of my dog's health. Dr. Bates is obviously invested and knowledgeable in his craft. It's reassuring as an owner to receive his honest insight. Would strongly recommend.

We have had such a great experience with the James City Vet Clinic. The people that work there are so compassionate and helpful. We have 2 Large old Labradors and recently one fell down the stairs. I was so worried about her. Amy at the front desk got us in right away . The Doctor was gentle and through. He gave us several options and a itemized list of possible expenses. Plus they told us about the coupons on their website for discounts and other ways to receive discounts. We really like this clinic and give it 5 stars.

Dr.Bates is wonderful. I have taken all of my four legged best friends here. He understands what is in the best interest of your pet and never pressures you to do anything unnecessary like some other vets have done. Kind and understanding with all animals and the rest of the staff is an absolute delight. I've seen the same smiling faces here for years.

My experience at James City Vet was definitely satisfactory.
Although the initial quote for the cost of services made my head spin, Dr. Bates and the team were very flexible with helping me cross some tests and medications off the list. Veterinary bills are always going to hurt the checkbook a little, but the vet team made it more bearable.
During my cat's dental procedure, he wasn't quick to extract teeth, something I was concerned about. Instead, he chose a less invasive solution, which I greatly appreciated.
Dr. Bates is also a pretty funny man who doesn't fail to entertain you during the visit.
And the lady at the desk complimented my cat and told me how lovely he is... That doesn't hurt. :)

I have an older dog, he's 10 now and we're in that process of moving between states. Somehow he injured his foot and they immediately found time for us. My poor pup has never hurt himself before so I was pretty nervous but the entire experience from the moment I walked in from the front desk to the Vet one on one time was amazing. I felt like I had been going there for years in about 20 minutes. My dog even loved the staff and he's a pretty hard sell considering he's basically a grumpy old man. Needless to say I'm impressed. I only wish I had found this place sooner before the impending move.

We have two Scottish Terriers. Both dogs love going to the clinic and being with Dr. Bates and his staff. We have boarded them successfully there, too. Both dogs recuperated well from their "birth control" surgeries. Both dogs love the attention that they receive by all at the clinic.
Dr. Bates keeps a close eye on our two Scotties and recommended a weight control diet for them. Both dogs love the kibble and have "better bowel habits" since switching to the Satiety diet.
