I first learned about OAH back in 1996. I had a sweet little Cocker Spaniel mix, named Skipper, who had a really rough time, healthwise, most of her life. We adopted her from the PWC animals shelter around 1985/1986. For most of her life, we went to another place, but I made very little money back then, and their rates were pretty high. But, as long as she got better, that's all that mattered to me. Well, in the summer of 1996, she started having the most awful sneezing fits. I took her to the vet, and they said allergies. We started her on antihistamines - Benadryl. Didn't work, and then she started having discharge from her nose. Vet said it was a sinus infection and started her on antibiotics. That didn't work. We were going to the vet almost weekly, but my poor Skipper was not getting any better. Financially, I was beyond tapped out. I asked if I could start making some kind of payment arrangements. Nope, payment in full had to be made at each appointment. So, I started using my credit cards next. That's when a good friend and coworker recommended OAH. She said their fees were extremely reasonable, all the vets had wonderful bedside manners, and they had evening hours. I started taking Skipper there...late fall of 1996. The vets there weren't exactly sure what was going on either. They reviewed her chart from the previous vet, ran their own tests, and it was just puzzling. They took biopsies to look for cancer, but they all came back negative. Then my poor girl started swelling really bad on the right side of her head and face. She completely lost vision in her right eye. The right side of her mouth was painful to the touch. OAH was great about not charging me for an office visit every time I brought her in and if a medication didn't work, they sometimes credited me for it. It was mid-December when one of the vets at OAH recommended I take her to a specialist who could perform an ultrasound...because the X-rays were not showing much. I made an appointment for Dec. 26. Skipper had inoperable brain cancer, and the specialist told me that every waking moment of her life had to be excruciatingly painful...that I had to seriously consider doing the right, the LOVING thing for her. I took my baby home, tears streaming down my face. I called OAH, and they said to bring her right in. I will never forget that day. Not just because of the heartbreak but also the empathy and compassion from all the OAH staff. They see all our fur and feather babies now...specifically Dr. Rachel Farge. She's amazing...so compassionate with us humans and gentle and loving with all the critters. But really, all the staff there are awesome! If your new in town, or maybe just looking for a new animal hospital for your fur-kid, I highly, HIGHLY recommend OAH!!!Read Less
