I've taken my kitten to this vet and had nothing but wonderful experiences, and I initially attributed to my cats personality. We recently adopted a dog and I was nervous about bringing him to the vet because although he's a very calm dog otherwise, he had a history of aggression from his vet anxiety when taken in. But not today. The Salty Paws team and Dr. Blessing were amazing with him, giving him treats and positive reinforcement and all the space he needed. Sure he was still a little shy, but showed absolutely no aggression and even warmed up to the vet tech and the vet by the end of it. The people here really truly care about the animals and their comfort and wellbeing. Whether 15 minutes away or 45, I will absolutely continue bringing my pets here, it's worth it. :) Read Less

My German Shepherd needed an incision and drain to her ear and couldn't be seen by the vet I usually go to, so I went to Salty Paws for the first time. This place was amazing!! Dr. Dirmeyer spent a long time getting to know my family member (dog), was very observant, gave me thorough explanations and recommendations. She picked up on other problems with my GSD, and advised me on a plan of care. The operating room was immaculate! Her vet techs were friendly and Dr. Dirmeyer was excellent on her two followup appointments. There was so little stress on my dog. So impressed! Thank you!!! Read Less

We visited for the first time yesterday and honestly, I can't emphasize enough how nice an experience it was. Number one, the office is beautiful. It was like walking into an HGTV reveal, and it makes me want to redo every inch of my own house. I will admit I was a little nervous when I got there because I had to bring my son with me, and in the past some offices that I've been to haven't been shy about letting me know that having a toddler in the exam room isn't ideal. But everyone we met at Salty Paws was really wonderful about it. Both the assistant and Dr. Johnson were happy to talk to my son, who is two and a half and loud and wants to touch every single thing always. The assistant even let him take home a couple of finger puppets, which he LOVED and played with obsessively for the rest of the day, so I thought that was really above and beyond and a very kind thing for them to do. My dog was also pretty nervous in the new environment, but I was really pleased with how patient they were with him. I didn't feel like they rushed anything, and they even managed to get a fecal sample in the office after I explained that because of our situation, it would be difficult for us to get one at home to bring for drop off. I also thought the price we paid (the office exam, three vaccines, and a fecal test) was very, very reasonable! I will admit that I'm used to Northern Virginia prices, and everything is outlandishly expensive up there, but still, I was really pleased by the bottom line at check out. I felt that all the personal attention we received (since I had several questions about behavioral issues as well) was really well worth what we paid. Then as an extra bonus, after we left we had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Dirmeyer out in the parking lot. I'm sure she was tired after work and had a lot of other things she'd rather be doing, but she stopped to chat with me about my dog and was very friendly to my son, and it was just sort of the cherry on top of an already really great visit. Overall, 10/10, wonderful visit. I'm so happy and relieved that we've found such a great vet so close to our new home, and we'll definitely be back. Thank you, everyone! Read Less

We have been going here a few years and I'm ready to try a new vet office. This week we had an appointment and the office waited to call to see if we wanted to reschedule our appointment or leave our cat overnight until literally ten minutes before the appointment. We'd already left work early, packed the cat (who was howling in the back seat) and started heading across town when they called. They said "we wanted to let you know ahead of time" but I'd hardly say that ten minutes before the appointment is advance notice! I also really did not appreciate their attitudes and bedside manner. One of the vet techs started telling us how she hates working with small animals and would so love to work with larger animals again, but no one in the area is hiring for that. Um, sorry? It's not our fault that you hate your job, and it's certainly not our poor, stressed, kitty's fault. I'll be taking our pets elsewhere now, because I'd rather have any of our animals taken care of by people who actually love them, or at least have more positive attitudes and have things more organized.Read Less

The worst hospital I have ever been to. I had a cat who I took there for shots and to be groomed. I had asked that they sedate her, when grooming her, because it was painful to her. When I went to pick her up, I knew something was wrong with her. I took her home and her behavior was strange. I called the hospital to talk to the Vet. She would not return my call. I wanted to know what had happened to my cat. Over 2 week I tried to contact her. I finally I went to the hospital to confront her about my cats treatment. She was hiding from me, I asked the lady out front many times that I was waiting to speak to her. She would not come out and talk to me. Finally I Walked back there thinking I would confront her. I could not find her. She had left the building. I never could get her to talk to me. I had to go to another vet for treatment. Friendly staff, knowledgeable doctors, high prices. My dog was experiencing some anxiety issues and I had some questions about it. So I scheduled an appointment to speak with someone about it. Everything they told me seemed the same as they had said at previous appointments. The results seemed very similar to what I read by "google-ing" the issue. Only difference would be the physical they did, checking his ears, teeth, weight, and breathing. The appointment only took about 30 minutes but it cost $50. I move around a lot and am heavily involved with cat rescue. I also own a dog for 4 years and have recently acquired two kittens and a puppy. I found Salty Paws after we adopted two kittens. The staff was very friendly both on the phone and in person. The vet attending during my first visit was cordial, she seemed very invested in the kittens' health and gave good advice on how to control their temperaments. The vet assistant seemed inexperienced, but friendly. I was a little sticker shocked at my $187 vet bill. Especially after finding out the kittens were only 5 weeks old and needed to come back in 3 weeks for another check up and shots. The vet attending my second visit was much more animated and engaging, she even gave one kitten a free ear mite exam. Her assistant was slightly overbearing, she kept talking over the vet and myself, but I could tell she really cared about animals. Salty Paws also helped us out after we adopted a puppy with doctored paperwork. The staff immediately invited us to bring in the dog so they could inspect and verify its breed free of charge. The hospital's atmosphere is clean and charming with expensive benches and comical signs hanging along the walls. They sell a multitude of personalized pet decals from local vendors. The building itself is very kept up and the grounds are immaculate, set back from the highway surrounded by woods. This place is worth the extra expense, appointments are easy to schedule, the staff is committed and friendly. Definitely one of the better places I've seen. Read Less

My Parents always had at least two dogs in our house at all times when I was growing up so I am no stranger to various vet clinics. I've been to great Vets and really bad ones too. After I moved out and was finally able to get a dog of my own I took him to Salty paws. What attracted me initially was the outside of the building. I was new to Va and didn't have anyone who could recommend a good clinic I could take my new puppy to. Anyways...I have been going to Salty paws now for almost four years and have no real issues with the staff. They have always been very sweet and attentive to my dog. He trusts them and has never had a bad experience going there. I've never had to fight to get him through the door and he is always happy with the staff and they are always happy to see him, and even though we only go for his annual check-up they still remember him which I think is amazing. My only complaint, and the only reason I gave the place four stars, is because I do think the prices are rather high and some of the vaccinations (like kennel cough) I don't necessarily feel that he needs. Other then that I have no real complaints and think that Salty Paws is an excellent place to take my dog. Read Less

Salty Paws was recommended to me by a neighbor who boards her dog there regularly. Upon entering the place I was very impressed. It was decorated beautifully inside and seemed like a very professional atmosphere. I did call in advance on three separate occassions to double check what my fees would be and procedures for an a walk in vaccination required prior to boarding my maltese for the first time. Once I showed up with all the required documents and spoke with the technician about my needs for the day I was immediately urged to agree to extra procedures (more money). First I was asked to repeat a vaccination that was not expired for three years. After clearing that up, I was told that my dog should be examined because the last shot he had was over a year ago. After explaining that he was recently examined and I was just there for a vaccination that was required for him to be boarded at their facility they took him back, wouldn't allow me into the exam room and 2 minutes later when they brought him out to me they informed me that my bill would be $14.00 extra because they did an examination anyway. Then they had to nerve to ask me if I would like to purchase any flea or heartworm medication. I am not sure if I want to use their services for boarding due to extra hidden charges they may tack on at the end. Plus no one even payed my dog one bit of attention. Most vets offices will at least give him a pat or two. Read Less

Read Less

We have taken our dogs here for a few years now. And every time we bored them they both come home with ticks. Which I understand nature and they both have preventative on them. But it's a simple check once a day when they are caring for them. Or at least check them coming in and before they leave. This last time one dog had tick completely under the skin. That has been there at least a day or so. Just so upsetting. Will not bored again.

I suppose you get what you pay for, but this seems excessive for just a short consult. They also seem to offer a different product every time I go. Read Less

I've been taking my dogs here for the last 10 years and since day one have always been impressed by the amount of care and compassion Dr. Dirmeyer and the entire staff have always shown to our furry family members. It's so comforting to be able to leave my dogs behind and know that they are getting the best treatment possible. Beyond that, Dr. Dirmeyer always treats my dogs like they are her own and understands the financial burdens that come along with having pets and does her best to recommend options that will offer the best possible care while also trying to minimize the bill as much as possible.

Read Less
