We had been to several vets for our Cocker Spaniel's infected ears and chest rash. We got ear drops tat didn't really cure the fungus. The chest rash was just shrugged at. Cortisone shots were given to stop the itch. When we got to Doc Widener, he ran some blood tests and found him to be hyperthyroid and he put him on thyroid medication which cleared up the rash almost immediately. The cream that he prescribed for ears kept the fungus at bay. Shiimsa lived to be 14.5 years old.We have a new dog, a miniature dachshund, who will be Mike's newest patient. I wouldn't take her anywhere else. Larry the cat even like him. Read Less

I can not begin to express how thankful I am to this vet and the kind, and genuinely caring people that work there! My bird hurt himself in a toy in his cage, and I frantically called any place I knew that could see birds. Though it was after hours, farmhouse answered the phone and agreed to treat my bird because he was bleeding. When I brought him there, his cage fell apart and he got loose in the parking lot. They came out with nets and a ladder and spent 45 minutes with me trying to help me get my bird back, and they were very apologetic! By some miracle, I have my bird back. I can’t thank you enough farmhouse staff for the kindness you showed me! I won’t bring my bird (or other animals) anywhere else! Read Less

I usually don't bother to write reviews but sometimes you just have to.I took my dog Benny to see Dr. Mike because my poor dog was miserable and so was I. I had taken him to another vet and was getting no where on what was wrong with my dog. He treated his skin condition and told me he had some very bad teeth. He gave me meds .for his skin condition and we set him up for dental work. My dogs skin condition was better in 24 hours. After Benny had 10 teeth out he was doing great after 24 hours. I am so glad I took Benny to Farmhouse he is like a new dog with a new lease on life I am so grateful. If you want a great vet who will take the time to listen and diagnose than this is the practice for you. Give him a try You will be glad you did just as Benny and I are. Thank-you Dr. Mike for saving my dog. Did i mention my dog Benny is twelve that' s a big deal when doing dogs teeth he did great and his quality of life will be so much better. Read Less

FIRST of all, this Dr is the MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE vet I've ever gone too the other vets couldn't figure out my cats allergy for years she suffered, until I found Dr Widener he helped me the first time my cat never had a flea allergy again he also saved another one of my cats that almost died with hyperthyroid. And he's also helped me with my other older cat so it's very disheartening to read stupid people angry and hurtful and attacking this Dr on his website, this snap problem is ridiculous she knew she would be charged extra it says on the snap voucher plain as day and to say she was charged to much I could go on .But then I would be lowering myself to this level of abuse on the Internet and another is the pig issue he is honest and always has been and he's more knowledgeable in animals then alot of the vets he worked for. That pig was plugged meaning he was going to die if he didn't let the Dr unplug him because he was blocked and the owner refused believing his pet was just constipated. The owner refused any help but pain meds so I can tell you that most of this crap on the Internet is just angry & rude. So if I ever had a problem I would go in the business myself and discuss it not defacing people on the Internet like cowards. Those idiots writing bad reviews - they need a life! Read Less

Dr. Widener is a great Vet!!!!! He took in our boxer urgently and managed to save her leg after she got caught in chicken wire. And, rather than put down our very late diagnosed diabetic dog, he suggested a very inexpensive fix to see if she would get better and she did. It has been two years and she is still thriving. My wife and I have a bratty little, incredibly intelligent ten year-old miniature pinscher, Eddie "Bananas" Bocelli, that we took to Dr. Widener for a few issues, mainly for a dental exam (his teeth and gums were judged to be in great condition); an occasional cough, which was diagnosed as a result of having a small, irritated trachea, common in small dogs. The prescribed treatment was to put him on a diet to decrease his weight by 2lbs (from his 10lbs.) and to replace his collar with a harness, both of which were successful, such that he no longer coughs. My wife and I are academicians in medically related areas. After going through many veterinarians' reviews, I selected Dr. Widener for his much deeper academic and research background and experience that indicated to me that he is dedicated and passionate about caring for animals. Eddie has never liked other people, nor would he allow anyone else touch him. He refuses to take food from others, which is good. He hates all other creatures, including dogs. He is an elite rodent and weasel killer. It is my theory that he is basically feral, that my wife and I are his pack, which is one of the main reasons I chose Dr. Widener. My wife and I, after Eddie's exam, couldn't stop talking about how truly amazed we were that he actually liked Dr. Widener, that it was magical. Throughout his appointment, Eddie had a big smile and was happy, that he wasn't in any hurry to leave. It appeared that Eddie could sense that Dr. Widener respected and cared about him. I wish we could stop by with Eddie, just so Eddie could pay a social visit to another human he likes! Eddie is such a little treasure to us, so intelligent, focused, energetic, and funny. Every moment with him gives us so much pleasure. We couldn't be more pleased with Dr. Widener and the Farmhouse. He spent a lot of time examining Eddie, far more than any other veterinarian; thus, we are giving him five extra stars--10 stars! Read Less

The Farm House is a great place to take your pet for checkups and emergencies. Dr. Widener's experience is amazing and comforting. He does a great job of diagnosing the problem, giving you treatment options, walking you through the treatment options and helping you find the root cause to prevent a recurrence. This is by far the least expensive clinic/hospital I have been to. My Jack Russell, Rambo, has been in to this place for a couple things. The first was a teeth cleaning and tooth extraction. I believe the teeth cleaning was $250 and the tooth extraction was $150 and antibiotics/pain killer's/vaccinations brought the total around $420. I checked 4 other clinics for estimates and they all were over $1000. Rambo has an ear infection right now and we visited Dr. Widener, his wonderful assistant, and the Farm House dog Oreo. He let me know that the ear cleaner I was using wasn't very good and didn't make me feel bad about it. He prescribed a ear ointment for the infection, a medicated ear wash and threw in a vaccination my dog needed. The bill came to $105. I would do anything for my pet, but I am limited with my budget. There really is no comparison the Farm House when the cost of the appointment is considered. I highly recommend this place and I will be taking my pets there for many years to come. Read Less

I started seeing Dr. Mike Widener in 2003 with my dog Nanook, then my 5 ferrets and also 1 cat and soon to be a kitten added to the list. Nanook is now 14 and has lived a life of a cat with 9 lives all with the help of Dr. Mike. This last I had fed her raw salmon not knowing what could happened he saved her in the nic of time. He takes very great care of all of my animals as if they were his own pets. He always greets me and my family as we come in. Dr. Mike W. explains everything to me about my pets and makes sure to ask if I understand or if I have any questions that he can answer. I have called in many times because I have thought something may had been wrong with my pets, I explain what is wrong and he always has a answer or lets me know that my pet needs to seen. Dr. Michael Widener is a awsome doctor, he is very intelligent. Also if anyone has any gripes about the cost of your bill, ""think"" you get what you pay for, I would rather pay alot to get alot. I have never had to pay an outragous bill for something that wasn't needed. Farmhouse Vet is the place to go, so go, your pet will be taking care of. Read Less

A very good Veterinarian! I have been taking my pets to Dr. Widener for 15 years. He used to share his practice with his ex wife. That must be the person "" friedhair"" from the 2007 review must have seen. I first saw Dr. Lasardo (ex-wife) and she told us that the intestinal parasite our kitten had would clear by itself if we kept the litter boxes very clean. Had to go back for an unrelated probelm a week later and Dr. Widener saw the prior test results and said that it is odd our kitten wasn't treated, ""this needs treatment and does not clear up by itself"". He treated my kitten and the diarrhea was gone within days. Another review mentioned that Dr. Widener didn't have great people skills but still is a good vet. They best vets my animals ever had were the ones with great animal skills. He is just very honest and direct about telling you what his opinion is on what would be best for your pet. Either don't give up on your animal yet or he will tell you if he thinks that the kindest and most realistic thing would be to put your animal to sleep. Recently I went through a big crisis with one of my small dogs and he sent us to the Tacoma Animal Emergency clinic when my dog needed a transfusion and intensive 24 hour care. When my dog relapsed he asked what do you want to do. Meaning call it quits atfer already spending almost $2000, or continue very expensive treatment. Not judgemental at all, he understands that there are limits to how much people can afford to spend on their loving pet. I decided to continue with treatment and Rex is doing better. Still not through the crisis but finally looking better. Dr. Widener was supportive and called a specialist (no cost to me) to ask for advice. He is very smart and knows a lot but doesn't have a chip on his shoulder and has no problem getting answers by asking other veterinarians. One of my friends took her Jack Russel mix to him and just by talking to her told her he thought the dog was having seizures. Just ran a basic blood panel to look at kidney and liver functions and sugar levels and started the little guy on antiseizure meds. ""We can do more tests if this doesn't work but I am pretty sure that's what's going on"" He was right and no more seizures for my friends dog. He is also an exellent surgeon and a kind person and really tries to help your pet. And yes, he does treat exotic pets and not so exotic ones. My friends chickens, ferrets, ducks, birds, rabbitts, chinchillas, snakes... It's a small office and the windows aren't clean and not everything gets dusted but the surgery room is sterile and the medical equipment clean. The ""pets"" (birds) that people didn't want anymore and live at the practice now are well taken care of and their living quaters are clean. His own dog was rescued by him when someone brought her in to get her euthanized because they didn't want her anymore. Read Less

I""m not sure what the previous reviewer experienced that gave the low score. That was a couple of years ago. We see Dr. Widener - a HE not a SHE. He is a great vet. He helped my cat after a couple of other local vets did a poor job. He did not subject us to extra testing nor refer us to someone else. My cat has a complicated condition. He was realistic about our cats life span. We already know how old the cat is so that is a given. What impressed me the most is that Dr. Widener contacted two specialists (no extra cost to me) to discuss my cat's condition and develop the best treament plan. I am very satisfied and my cat is doing alot better. I just scheduled an appt for my new puppy to be seen by him. I am glad my neighbor referred me to him. Read Less

He takes the time to really focus on your animal and do whatever is best for them. The man clearly loves animals and it shows. Sometimes you'll be forced to wait for him, but only because he is helping some other pet owner. He tends to get absorbed in each case. And keep in mind that his office is extremely small. we took our cat in as she was very sick. we were subjected to expensive, uneccissary, and inconclusive tests. she was dishonest about the life span of a cat, making it seem like our elderly cat would live many years. tried to convince us to take her all the way to portland oregon to admit her to a $1000 a day hospital to do still more tests. treated us poorly when we couldnt afford it. made comments like 'its what i would do for MY cat, but its like FAMILY. ' as though we werent torn up enough about not being able to afford thousands of dollars to 'maybe' find out whats wrong with the cat we have had for 13 years. when she got worse we took her to a pet emergency room, and were told the REAL life span of a cat, which makes our cat pretty old. i checked around and found this to be true. we spoke with the vet after the emergency room event and she acted like it was our fault our cat got worse. said: you didnt do what i TOLD you to do. (we had been dosing her with meds for 10 days) refused to answer questions, lectured us, gave conflicting information, and didnt tell us what we could expect from the e.r. treatment cause she refused to look at the report and said: they probably used a fast medicine that wont last. however if she had LOOKED at the paper she was being offered she would have known, and told us exactly how long it should last. she performed tests and sent them out to specialists at great cost, and told us afterword that those tests didnt neccesarily tell her anything anyhow. we wound up treating her for 3 different things she 'might' have which we could have done with just one test. we now must go to another vet to see what to do from here. what a rip off. luckily the animal emergency was honest with us. we should have gone there instead of critter calls, also known as farm house veterinary. this lady likes to guilt and pressure you into spending big bucks. if she can't fix your animal, and you can't spend a ton, expect to be treated shabbily. Read Less

This was my first time here d/t an emergency I had with my kitty Felix. He had a blockage in his urethra and after leaving the pet emergency I thouht I was out of options because of how high they quoted me. I went here on a wimb and I’m so glad I did. Not only did Dr. Widener save Felix’s life, but he also worked with me on the cost. He even was able to squeeze me in ASAP! I just feel like I owe him and his team soooooo much. Now Felix is at home back to his normal goofy self. Will be telling everyone I know about this place.

He may tell it like it is and you may not want to hear it, but he truly cares about his patients and their owners. He does what is best for both. Read Less

The man clearly loves animals and it shows. we took our cat in as she was very sick. we were subjected to expensive, uneccissary, and inconclusive tests. she was dishonest about the life span of a cat, making it seem like our elderly cat would live many years. tried to convince us to take her all the way to portland oregon to admit her to a $1000 a day hospital to do still more tests. treated us poorly when we couldnt afford it. made comments like 'its what i would do for MY cat, but its like FAMILY.
