I brought my 2yr old cat Buttons this week and he has to stay for 5 days due to his condition. I also brought in my puppy years ago and she had a long stay as well, yes the cost was overwhelming, just like any medical/vet bill, but they are part of my family and it is every pet owners responsibility to take care of their pets, regardless of the cost. The staff called everyday for an update, let my husband and I visit and the Veterinarian who cared for our Buttons called himself and spoke with us while we were visiting, just to give us an update. I work in health care myself caring for others loved ones, so I understand what they have to endure, from the occasional crazy people to the kindest warm hearted ones, etc. I can honestly say the customer service that FIRGROVE VETERINARY CLINIC gave us was Amazing! They have a clean environment for our pets, kind employees and very knowledgeable veterinarians. I would recommend this clinic to whomever wanted quality and compassionate care for your fur babies! If I could give this place 0 stars I would..which is very sad since I used to love this place and their staff. This however is not the first time I have been treated with complete disregard and no compassion from the front desk staff. I have been going to Firgrove since 2012 and have spent tens of thousands of dollars on my 3 dogs. I need an emergency appointment for my dog and Caitlin the front desk person not only sounded monotone once I explained my dogs issues I had to fish for any type of recommendation of where I should go. She offered nothing..I said I needed another appt for my other dog Duke since he needs his shots as well and she could get him in on Wednesday but could not see my sick dog at that time. The only reason why I have stayed with Firgrove is because of the extensive medical history they have with my dogs and because my dog that has the emergency had something like this happen to her before and they treated her. I understand that Firgrove Vet is very busy but a more friendly staff would help them retain long standing customers. I have voiced my opinion on this before to Firgrove and nothing has changed. As I read the google reviews I am noticing I am not the only one to say the Vets are amazing the front desk staff is TERRIBLE. Yesterday was a crazy mess of emotions. But short story my 2 yr old dachshund was attacked by 2 coyotes. My dad and my sister rushed him to the office and I met them there, but we called ahead of time to let them know that we were coming and they were ready as soon we arrived. Dr. Kos was so on top of things, gave him a very thorough exam, the nurses got Javi hooked up to an IV and start administering antibiotics, everything happened so fast and so professionally. I was very ...impressed because I was a mess and my dog was obviously scared. Dr. Kos walked me through all of his x-rays and scans and made sure we understood everything. She called me throughout the day give me updates and ran through the tests results that came later in the day with me. I was even able to spend time with him after work because he couldn’t come home due to being hooked up to the IV and getting medicine throughout the night. I used to love this place but something must have changed the last couple of months. Appointments canceled without our knowledge (had a little sticker they gave me with the time), on another occation called to confirm and they told us the wrong time (someone else with same last names time), had a follow up scheduled and the doctor got sick (understandable it happens) but if some other doctor there checks out my cat they have to charge. But I was told there are appointments two weeks from now. Also called to schedule shots for my other cat and was told there was nothing for over a month. When I asked why they said they don't like to do too many shots so that they have openings for medical procedures. Plus now that they are closed Sunday's I guess it's time to look for a new vet. I’ve been taking my dogs to Firgrove for several years and now my daughters dogs as well, until today. The vets are good but front office staff not so much. I had a small dog passing on today and was basically told they were too busy to assist, even when what I really wanted was to not have him suffer any longer. This is our go too vet for the past three years with our cat. We used to think highly of them until the past month when things have really gone down hill. We have waited a week for a call on test results, only to be told there is nothing wrong. Symptoms still occurring but no appointments for weeks. Receptionists are apologetic but don't offer a solution. Today we were told since we took her in to the emergency vet first that she wouldn't be seen at Firgrove at all...even though we had an appointment. I'm beyond frustrated and disappointed in this place. We will no longer be bringing our cat here. They have lost our business. We do not trust them to provide car for our cat anymore. Read Less

I have a Maine Coon cat with several unusual issues and I am extremely picky about veterinarians. Many do well with dogs but not as well with cat knowledge. When I moved here a year ago I actually visited 4 different ones before choosing Firgrove. I've known of Firgrove Veterinary Clinic since the early 80's, when Dr Shirley was large animal vet. I have used other vet clinics in the past, but keep coming back to Firgrove. Dr Shirley, although abrupt, is a genius (IMO) at what she does. Always going to seminars and conferences, in order to learn more and put that learning to use in the clinic. Drs Kos and Barber are married IRL, and they work so well on their own and as a team. They are my "go-to" vets. I've known them for years, since I worked there quite some time ago. Dr Havaland (sp?) is an excellent surgeon, in fact she recently did an eye removal on my little poodle mix. The surgery was a complete success. I really can't say enough good things about Firgrove. Sadly I had to put down my beloved Chance yesterday as she was too sick to help, and would not have had a good quality of life, she the sweetest dog ever. The past month has been a difficult one for my dog Bree and I, as she is now 14 years old and showing signs of aging and her end of life is approaching. I did some calling around and was told by someone that with her symptoms, she should be euthanized, I was devastated. On Saturday, we were out and drove by Firgrove and I knew that is where we needed to go, and thanks to my cell phone, I immediately made an appointment for her to be seen with the assumption that we were going... to be saying our final goodbye to her. I am so pleased with the outcome of that visit, and how kind and compassionate the staff at the Firgrove Veterinary Clinic were. Dr. David Reisen was wonderful, and after his examination of Bree, gave us his recommendations on how best to handle the situation. He communicated the different scenarios kindly and an clearly, and answered all of our questions, didn't make us feel rushed at all. Bree has had a battery of blood tests done. This was all very difficult for me to deal with, and I am so thankful for the people who are walking this path with me right now, and whatever the outcome, I am now at peace knowing she will have excellent care in this stage of her life. I received a call this afternoon from Dr. Reiser with Bree's test results, and he explained the plan he wants us to follow with her. I am so grateful that Firgrove is open on Sundays for emergency care! I brought my dog in after he ingested a poisonous mushroom. Their negligence killed my baby. I paid for tests to be ran, only to find out they didn't bother to read them. Resulting in the death of my loved one. We cannot express enough how amazing the staff and doctors are at this hospital. They have answered every question, always there when we call to ask more questions and allowed us to visit our Pixie kitty while she was receiving supportive care. I love this clinic. I have went there for all my family pets and now my own. Last year we had to put down our family dog and they were very loving and did so much for us. We received flowers and many cards from them. The one negative is when we went into the room after they put her down they left the blinds and everything open for the outside world to see. I took my dog here after extensive questioning about their pricing to get x-rays of his teeth. Real difficult to get a straight answer on what my costs would be. They required that they get to know my dog before they do x-rays, meaning they have you come in they meet and they charge you a fee. WOW, What a way to fleece the animal loving community. I ask for a detail list of charges, never got it because either they aren't qualified to give an estimate or they are afraid you will run to an organization that operates on truth and fair pricing. I returned with my dog for x-rays and in my mind, based on my detailed questions and their vague answers it would be about $200.00. I asked my husband to drop him off and he not knowing their sneaky ways, they got him to agree to extra services that weren't needed, but they got him to agree to it through fear and concern. Our dogs are like our children and we will take care of them and that's what Firgrove Veterinary preys upon. My husband picks him up and its $540.00, I am livid! I go up to get the x-rays and my voice in firm and constant demanding the x-rays. After about 15 minutes the Manager tells me to leave or I will call the 911. I told her to call 911, then I heard her make a false report that I was threatening her, so I called 911 and reported that she was making a false report and that I was using the same tone and voice then entire time. The Sheriff arrived, the Dr. Barber came out and told her to get the x-rays to me. The sheriff arrived and I would imagine that she is quite embarrassed for escalating it to that level. If she were my employee, she would be fired The entire experience at Firgrove Veterinary was the worst experience of inept employees and fleecing of animal lovers I ever encountered. I had gotten their name from a few friends who recommended them. They are fantastic. I was able to get an appointment quickly (my dog was sick). The staff was knowledgeable and listened to all my questions. The atmosphere was very friendly. We only waited a couple of minutes to be called back. My husband and I came her on September 8, 2016 with our female cat who was diagnosed with cancer on September 1, 2016 at a different Vet. The reason why we brought her here was to get a second opinion. Her back right leg and paw became really swollen, we took her to a different vet, where they took a biopsy. A few days after that she completely stopped eating drinking and using the litter box. She developed a very large scab where they took the biopsy, she even somehow developed open wounds that were infected and dripping puss. She even lost 4 pounds in 3 weeks. So coming to Firgrove they were able to see us. The vet and the vet techs were very nice and compassionate. Unfortunately the vet recommended that she be humanly euthanized. My husband and I already talked about that, but we wanted to fight for her and give her a fighting chance. But the vet felt around her abdomen and their was a good chance that the cancer has spread to her abdomen. He even said that he could see the spirit in her to fight, but her body was unable too. He did say we could try to help her feel better but it would of cost us more then we could afford and there was no way of telling if she would come out better or we would find her already passed away. When we did make the decision to put her down it was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. Especially for me, since she was my first cat ever. All the staff was very understanding and gave us all the time we needed and to spend as much time with her. We did decide to have her cremated and we will be able to bring her home when they call and say she is ready to come home. One of the vet techs stood next to her petted her and loved on her and we were telling stories about her. Very nice people who care about animals. After all was said and done my husband and I were hugged by most of the staff. What helped us a lot was the fact that they were able to work with us financially. I literally just had the best veterinary experience I have ever had. I brought in M, a stray cat we had found, for an eye infection. After explaining the situation to the vet, she only had helpful advice on how to best acquaint the cat into our household. They also provided a "kitten bag" which had some food and even a single dose of flea medication at no cost! Compared to most of the vets in Puyallup, this one is pretty good. I have several dogs that have received good care, but you have to hand pick the RIGHT vet. Seeing the amount of negative reviews from people who live in an area where people feel overly entitled, I felt the need to add a positive one. When one of our dogs recently got sick, Dr. Haviland suggested he have an abdominal ultrasound to diagnose the problem. That ended up saving his life because Dr. Shirley discovered his inflamed gall bladder and told us it needed to be removed immediately or he could die. She referred us to a specialist in Tacoma and even called the facility to explain the urgency of the situation and make sure they could do emergency surgery. When our other dog become sick, Dr. Barber and Dr. Kos were wonderful throughout the entire diagnosis and initial treatment. He had kidney failure and when there was nothing else that could help him, they were very compassionate and helpful until the very end.
