Let me preface this by saying, I have previously worked in an animal hospital so I'm well aware of what normal charges are and the cost of doing business for an veterinary clinic. I recently moved to Renton with my family and found AHCC online. They advertise "Free Exam For New Patients When You Book Your Appointment Online!" Seems simple enough, but I clicked on "See Details" and no mention of purchase being necessary, etc.I made an appointment (online to qualify for the free exam) to get my dog updated on 2 vaccinations. (According to their website, I'd be paying $10.95 each) This is the best price I've found so far for competing vets in the area so I was happy. We get to AHCC, and to their credit, the place was very nice, clean, and the reception staff was exceptionally friendly. There was a short wait and we were taken back. The nurse was friendly and made us feel right at home. She was great with our pup, asked thorough questions to get an idea of his history, and gave him a few treats to make him feel at ease. She did make several suggestions for additional vaccinations, services, etc. which I've learned to expect. I declined. Then the doctor came in. She was also very nice, but right off the bat started speaking about the services our pup would be undergoing...none of which I was there for.We moved from NV to WA. NV has no fleas and no heart worm. The services she recommended were a heart worm test, flee & tick prevention, a fecal test, and deworming. (Again, we went in for two shots!) She then asked if we had driven when we moved. I told her yes. Her response was, "Well then you've driven through an area that has heart worm and all it takes is a mosquito bite! He COULD HAVE been exposed!" Mind you, she asked when we moved, which was in November. Who here has ever been bitten by a mosquito in November?! So I explained to her that when we moved, we drove through a snow storm the entire way to WA and there was no way he would have been bitten by a mosquito in a 30 mph wind and snow storm. She then told me that I should test now just to be sure, then treat him for six months, then retest to make sure any sign of heart worm (that he doesn't have) is gone. She then said that a positive heart worm test won't show up until six months after exposure. Well, as I write this, we're in March. It hasn't been six months. So not only am I being advised to pay for a test that will come up negative regardless of whether or not he has heart worm, but I'm then told to assume he has it, pay for six months of treatment that he may or may not need, and then retest to see if he has it AFTER I've already treated it. I completely understand the need to be more on top of these issues now that we're in a different environment that can impact the health of our dog, but I was getting these two shots done so we could board our little guy for a night because we were on our way out of town. So I didn't need the runaround. I told the doc that we were going to have him neutered soon and we'd take care of it all at that time. She left the room, and the nurse returned with an invoice. I looked at the bottom line and it was over $300! I was shocked! My eyes scanned over the itemized list and found things like "Nurse Admit & Assist" for $21, "Miscellaneous" for $50, and "Hazardous waste disposal" for $9. Now, my dog isn't having anything but two shots done. So the "hazardous waste" means walking over to the medical waste bins and throwing the sharp away. I'm being charged $9 for someone to throw out the trash. I'm being charged $21 for the nurse to write dog my dog's weight on his chart and walk him to the back so that the doctor can give him his vaccine. And God only knows what "miscellaneous" means! (When asked, I was told that IF the doctor looked in his ears and thought they needed to be cleaned, that would be what I was paying for...apparently that's not included in the free exam and a simple ear cleaning is $50!) I was also charged for all the testing I told them we weren't doing today...extra vaccines, everything heart worm, and numerous preventative measures that my dog wasn't at risk for. Imagine! Over $300 for a simple visit with TWO vaccines!I told her to take off everything except for what I came in for. She returned with an itemized list equalling $110 and change...saying that I HAD to do the deworming, flee and tick prevention, and a fecal in order to qualify for the free exam. That was NOT on the website, and when I called the clinic to confirm my appointment, I was not told that I would have to pay over $100 to qualify for a "free" exam. All in all, this visit was the worst I've ever had. I left paying $84.79 for something that should've been $23 (according to THEIR prices on the website). Maybe no one will read this, but it needed to be said. Truly if I hadn't experienced it myself, I never would've believed this story. Save your money. Go elsewhere. Read Less
