Not my favorite vet. My dog has only been to one other vet before this and we were sad to leave that vet, but had to relocate to this area. We thought we'd give this place a go since it shared the same credentials as our previous vet. The vet and staff are always very sweet to our pet. They spoil him with treats and love every time, which I've always appreciated. The downside is the ridiculous demand for exams, referrals to specialists, and change of plans. I've constantly been told to do one thing and when it's their turn to do something for my pet. He has epilepsy and has had it for two years. There is no cure, but there are ways we can control it. We can't control it through unnecessary exams (which they tried to sneak one in on me once before I questioned it). He needs medication, which the receptionist/vet tech sassed me by saying, "if you want to continue receiving medication refills, you need to bring him in for an exam and his six month blood work." They constantly referred me to a neurologist, which I saw once. Initially, that visit was so the doctor could get a second opinion about something. It went from being a one time recommendation to being part of our conversations every single time. It was as if the doctor didn't feel comfortable making any decisions without his opinion. When a vet and their staff puts you in a position to have to choose between a meal for your family or the health of your pet, that's a red flag right there. We are not rich, but have been blessed with enough money and resources to help our little guy control his seizures. My husband and I do everything we can. Our dog is s happy,  energetic animal who loves life, everyone, and everything. He's resilient, despite his issue. After dealing with this disorder for two years and this vet only knowing him for six months, I'd like to think my husband and I know a little bit about what we're doing and that any vet we go to would at least be willing to trust our judgment before putting us between a rock and a hard place or taking any sort of advantage of our situation. Our former vet never put us in this position. It was never a battle. It was a mutual understanding from the very beginning. I'd rather take my business elsewhere. Read Less

I went here based on the fact other people I know knew here through dog sports. Dr. Schottman was pleasant however after going there a few times I do question her knowledge. She made two very bad medication mistakes that could have cost my dogs their lives. One was given double the dose of an antibiotic which I caught at home before giving it to her. Only knew because I had given her the same med before and had the bottle from another vet. I called her up and was told oh sorry yes it's wrong please come back and get the correct one. Second mistake with an old dog I had she prescribed a med for pain however a week or so later dog had two weird episodes where she was literally stiff for a few hours. I figured it was the med as she seemed fine after it would have worn off and was time for another dose. When I told the vet she insisted that wasn't possible. Later a friend happen to tell me that med had adverse reactions to Valium that my dog was already on and this vet knew about! This vet also tried to convince me that the place I was taking my old dog for her non anestectic teeth cleaning was not as good as without anestectic there is no way to clean under the gums. Really? The teeth looked perfect and never looked so good. I was paying 45 every 3 months for maintenance. It was better to risk putting a 16 year old under where she could die according to her. She also was missing out on the huge teeth cleaning fees she charges! The main gal at the front desk is also pushy and a used car sales person type.  After looking around online I saw she has made other medication errors. This is so not ok and very dangerous. It happened twice in the few times I went there so can't even imagine what else is going on. I won't be going back. Read Less

I was referred to Sunset Pet hospital when I moved to the area from Seattle, by my dog's trainer. He felt that Dr. Shottman's demeanor and training methods would be a good match for a couple of rescued rotties with "issues", and boy was he right! Unbelievably, Tinkerbell actually liked the team there, and she was usually so afraid of vets that she'd wet herself trying to get away. For that matter, even my sketchy Starbreaker starts wagging his little nubbin when he sees where we're going. Sadly, the cats never seemed impressed, but, well, they're cats. They never seemed distressed, either. Honestly, if you take the time to form a relationship with the staff, the way you would a medical doctor, you're going to reap the most benefits here. I've been with them for almost 7 years now, and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. I've tried a lot of different vets over the years, as I've owned pets my whole life. There are some that are cheaper, it's true, but the quality of the vaccines they buy and other, similar issues, are reflected directly in those costs. This vet takes my pet's health very seriously, but they also take my sensibilities into account. I'm not a huge fan of unnecessary chemicals, for example, but totally willing to cook for a neurotic emo rottie. By listening to my concerns, Doctor was able to immediately flex and recommend alternate treatment that has really helped my aging boy. When the unthinkable happens and it's time to say goodbye, this team is the absolute best. They've helped me through the loss of two of my furry companions, and have done so with compassion and understanding. The facility is clean but not fancy, and the staff is kind, cheerful, and they have a sense of humor. They praise my pets and tell them how good they are, until they're wagging and wiggling. They recognize how my pets bond to me and work with that relationship, unlike all the previous vets who tried to intervene or work against it. Overall, this has been the best partnership I could have ever hoped for, and I would hope that anyone looking for a "family" vet for the life of companion animals who are family, and not just pets, would consider this vet. After several frustrating go arounds with Banfield, I started taking my dog to Sunset Pet Hospital because it is more intimate and seems like they care a bit more about each individual pet.So far, after several visits for vaccinations, skin issues, and general check ups I have been very happy!  The staff has been very kind, sweet with my German Shephard.  I haven't had any trouble with the amount of time the staff takes-they are spending quality time with each pet-I see that as good.  They have always called and checked on my dog the following day.If you are looking for a smaller, more caring vet I would recommend Sunset Pet Hospital! The appointment process was a breeze and the receptionist was chatty and kind.I was seen quickly and the appointment went well. They reviewed all the past history and made copies of paperwork. They even took a copy of the sticker which had the chip ID# for my dog.I currently have pet insurance and was offered an additional 30days on a new policy if I would switch after my current policy is up. Definitely looking into it as pets can be very expensive when things go wrong. The only thing I didn't like was being hard sold on tests and exams. Yes, I know my dog needs all those tests done. However I think it is safe to wait two weeks when the insurance kicks in and when he is due for booster shots. I'd like to pay one premium- not for each test individually. I just wish they would offer samples of the dental items for sale. After seeing how picky my dog is, I don't want to spend unnecessary money on things that upset his stomach or things he flat out doesn't want. All in all this place was a normal vet office that is clean. I'll definitely go back to get all the testing and boosters done- other than that, meh. Read Less

I chose to start going to Sunset Pet Hospital after a terrible experience at my previous vet. I had read up on the hospital on their website and Dr Schottman definately had the same values and views on our children as I did. My first visit to see Dr Kate, was warm and inviting. Her assistants came into the room and smiled and greeted me immediately, and got on the floor and gave my dog kisses. They are very thorough with their recommendations and education, and I for one appreciate that. When Dr Kate came in she got down on my dogs level also, and made us feel like family. Their prices are reasonable considering the education and level of care you recieve. I even got a call that day with fecal results and the doctor personally called me the next morning to go over my dogs bloodwork. I cant thank Dr Schottman and her staff more for giving me a safehaven to bring my ""children"". Read Less

I am so glad I found Dr Kate and her team at Sunset Pet Hospital. My cat had what I'd been told was a cold by one vet and an allergy by another. Dr Kate knew it was something more than that and sent me to a specialist who diagnosed my beloved friend with cancer. I was heartbroken. Everyone at the hospital knew how upset I was and were kind and caring with me even when I was a wreck. Dr Kate did research and encouraged me to try treatment. Thanks to that I had my beloved cat for another 3 years, until she died of old age. I always knew she was in good, gentle hands when I dropped her off for treatments. When it was time to let her go, everyone at the hospital was so sad and I knew they really understood what she meant to me. She is gone now, but I have 2 new kittens who I take to Dr Kate. I hope they never get sick, but I know if they do they will get the best of care. Louise Read Less

My experiences with the vet and staff at Sunset have been great. I'm very thankful for their kind care during my cat's last months (she was 18) and their compassion when I finally had to make that decision that we all dread making concerning our pets.  I also found that the vet was very well informed and researched issues facing my dog including a life-threatening problem she had with heartworm and behavioral issues (she's a rescued dog, so she had a very bad first year of life.)  I appreciated the extra time the vet spent talking with me about her problems as we determined what to do. All options were presented and ultimately it was my decision on which plan to follow. Read Less

I use to live in Renton and unfortunately took my cat there.  The staff is unorganized and does not recognize repeat customers.  My cat was  receiving chemo there on a weekly basis and they always asked me who I was and what my cat was doing there!  The staff has no sympathy for terminally ill animals it seems like.  They also had to order meds for my cat as well.  They could not do that in a timely manner and there were times when we nearly ran out.  For the prices they charge, I expected a better level of service.

My family has been bringing our cats to Sunset Pet Hospital for years now. The staff is always knowledgeable and kind. My cat has had countless problems including allergies, and other medical problems. They always remember details about our cats, as well as our family. They have been there during the healthy check-ups, and also during difficult times. I have been very happy with the service Sunset Pet Hospital has provided over the years. Read Less

Read Less

Great doctor and great staff! I've been taking my pets there for years and trust them completely when it comes to the care of my pets. Even if I move to a different city, Dr Schottman will be my vet.
