I am a big fan of this vet, Dr. Shaffer, and clinic. They know their stuff and have cared very well for my cat.  They really love animals and Dr. Shaffer is very good, efficient, knowledgeable. Prices are reasonable and I never feel like charges and treatment is inflated like I sometimes have at other vets. The only reason I don't give this clinic 5 stars is that they rarely answer their phone during their advertised office hours so you must leave a message. They do not get back to you in a timely fashion so if you have a pressing concern this can be frustrating.  Doc takes a whole month off in the summer, this year it was all of August. I have been a customer for years so I know this all isn't just a one time thing. I just got a new rescue dog at the beginning of this month and was disappointed to find I had to take him elsewhere because Doc Shaffer was not available.  I think he could use a partner that would be just as good and caring as he is.  If you can find one doc, this place would be ideal!!! Okay, first a little disclaimer, this clinic is by appointment only!  No walk ins!  I don't know if that's a common thing in Seattle since I just moved here, but I'm used to just walking into a vet clinic.  Not so here... but on to my review!First off like I said, definitely a by appointment place.  Needless to say, I walked in very worried because (not to get too graphic but...) my dog had some major diarrhea.  He was also peeing all over the place and it was pretty much just a disaster.  I looked into vets on google and yelp and this one came highly recommended and supposedly affordable.  The receptionist was very friendly, and when she realized I didn't have an appointment, she worked to try and fit me in as soon as possible.  Even better, when Dr. Schaffer came out early from the previous appointment, he offered to see my dog anyway!  Very cool.  Dr. Schaffer was extremely nice and the vet tech seemed very competent as well.  Bottom line is that my dog had some bacteria or something going on, and they gave him a shot of cortisone, a week's worth of antibiotics, and bland canned food for the next three days for 80 bucks.  I feel like I got away with a steal!  The doc was extremely cool with my dog, and even asked if I lived near by.  If I did, he was going to recommend me stopping by a couple of times a week for a doggie biscuit so my dog would get to know him and his staff better and be less skittish next time.  Bottom line, very cool and polite staff, they really worked to help me out, and Dr. Schaffer was awesome with my dog.  He's not necessarily the most people friendly guy, but he's very polite and obviously cares about the animals.  I will be going here for the rest of my time in Seattle, for sure.  Highly recommended. I couldn't ask for a better vet for my dog and two cats.  Dr. Shaffer came highly recommended by an Australian vet friend and we've been going to his office for years.  The office may seem like a place you'd pass right by, but Dr. Shaffer and his staff are wonderful.  The annual check up services are affordable and scheduling has never been a problem for us.  Dr. Shaffer doesn't mind that I hold one of my skittish cats whilst he does the exam, although I think she's starting to warm up to his staff.  Dr. Shaffer has been great with odd requests for fecal exams and specific lab tests (required by doggie daycare) as well as things like forta flora (when he's had the runs and I don't think he needs a vet visit).  Also, which other vet will make out with your dog and give him extra treats? I moved to Seattle in 1986 and had the misfortune of trying a number of vets until I was referred to Admiral Vet around 1993. Since then I have had a number of dearly loved pet but only one vet. I affectionately call him "Dr. Death" b/c I wouldn't trust another vet to help me make the heart breaking decision of letting an anmial go when it is their time. I trust him implicitly to tell me when to let my friends go and when it is not the right time he tells me that too. Don has become more than a vet, he has become a dear friend who comes and comforts not only me but my best anminal friends when it is their time to go. With one dog "Wally" he took heroic steps to save this dog on Thanksgiving weekend. AND HE DID IT! Don is more than a vet, he is a friend and a part of my family. Oh yeah, and I always receive a beautifully written in-house created card when I am grieving the the loss of one of my friends. Priceless. Read Less

I adopted three kittens from a local shelter. They developed horrible URIs. I saw three vets before I saw Dr. Shaffer. Long story, but one of the vets I hold responsible for the death of one of the cats, one seemed not to like to touch cats, and the last spent all of a minute and a half with my very sick cat, actually leaving the room while I was still speaking to him. Dr. Shaffer's office was pleasantly different. There was absolutely no wait and the entire staff was very soothing to my very sick kittens, keeping up constant reassuring and gentle touches the entire time the kitties were on the table. He wandered in with a mug of coffee and a blunt yet caring manner, and I knew immediately the kittens were in good hands. He was honest with me about the severity of the illness, but offered good instructions about home care and the kittens made it through just fine. The staff are all friendly. The whole office has a pleasant informality that puts you at ease during a stressful time. This is the way vet's offices used to be -- compassionate, no-nonsense care at reasonable prices. So, don't be put off by the low-tech atmosphere. After sampling other vets that came highly recommended but were a huge disappointment, I found my go-to place in West Seattle. Read Less

I just took my dog in to get his nails trimmed. The two ladies in the office were very nice. They took my information and I got my dog's nails trimmed almost right away. The nightmare started when they began to clip my dogs nails. It took all three of them and the first thing they did was pick him up and lay him on his side. Naturally, when they put him in that defensive position, he started freaking out. I had to leave because I couldn't watch what they were doing to him. The vet clipped each nail three times, thereby prolonging my dog's torture. I went back in to check on him and I could hear him crying. My dog has never acted that way before and I've taken him to a dog grooming place to get his nails trimmed before this. Of course, the other place didn't hold him down. When I went in to get him, they were looking at his face because it was bleeding. Yes, bleeding on the cheek. He bit through his own cheek during the procedure. And the best part is that when I told them that they said that they couldn't see where the bleeding was coming from. I could and I hold no medical degree. Actually, the vet said that he couldn't have bit through his cheek because that's not where his teeth are. As I sit at my computer writing this, my dog is bleeding from his cheek, so yes, that is what happened and yes, obviously that IS were his teeth are. I would say that these people are dangerously incompetent and I would not recommend them. Oh, and I paid $18 for the nail trim which is a ridiculous price even if they'd done a great job. Read Less
