While most of the staff is very friendly and helpful, their front desk lady Jan is extremely rude and unpleasant. She has no interest in the care of your animal and seems to only be interested in charging your credit card. My most recent bad experience (among many) was when she called to confirm my follow-up appointment for my dogs ear/ skin infection. After I asked her if the vet or a nurse could call me to discuss my dogs medicine she said "they can't do that!" and wouldn't tell me why. I told her I needed advice on her medication and need to speak with someone regarding it and she cut me off, told me she cancelled my appointment, and hung up on me. (!!!!!) Needless to say I will be calling a different clinic that actually cares about my animal. Read Less

I LOVE this veterinary clinic. I have found them to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and very straight forward in all of their dealings with us. We have received expert and practical advice for a cat with numerous health problems. They have occasionally spent extra time with me giving advice over the phone. All of the vets here are very grounded and I have never had them recommending extraneous services or products, a phenomenon that I have experienced at other local vet clinics. Best of all, they will explain problems (and choices) to owners as if we were intelligent human beings. I also love the fact that their office is cozy and no frills. I want to pay for top notch care, not designer furnishings. Read Less

One of the best Vet offices I've ever been to.  We chose BAH due to the great reviews, and I have to say that everyone here has exceeded our expectations.  If you're looking for a vet that really cares about your pet - I highly recommend any of the Dr's here.  We brought our kitty Diesel here, who was senior and had become diabetic.  Dr. Wallace was very kind and knowledgeable in her treatment of him, and helped to make his last few months with us very comfortable.  When we had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep, all of the staff along with Dr. Wallace were extremely kind and respectful.  Dr. Wallace had tears in her eyes and was extremely gentle through the whole process, and allowed us to stay with our boy for a long time in the room after all was done.  She gave us a paw print from him, and even sent a hand-written sympathy card, which was extremely touching.  On top of that, BAH made a donation in Diesel's name to the Humane Society.  So thoughtful. Our other kitty, Hercules, is now having some health issues, and Dr. Berry and Dr. Howe have both been fantastic in looking to make a diagnosis.  We have received regular calls to check on his health, and Dr. Howe has really shown that she cares about getting him healthy again, and finding out the best way to treat him.  Sam, one of the nurses there, has offered to help show us ways to give Herc his pills, and is always extremely gentle and kind with him when he's in.   Jan and Josi at the desk are always extremely friendly, and answer all of my questions, and have been able to get Herc in on short notice.  For anyone  there I haven't mentioned by name, it's only because I haven't worked directly with them yet, but am sure they are just as awesome as the rest of the team!  Finally - as for pricing - I find them to be extremely reasonable, and very good at showing all options, and pointing you in the right direction of where to start if you're not prepared to do everything at once.  All in all, I couldn't ask for more. Thank you to everyone at BAH!  You guys are fantastic! Read Less

My wife and I adopted our first dog and needed a vet. We chose Ballard Animal Hospital because of its positive reviews, but our experiences have not been as positive. TL;DR: (1) rushed visit w/ unclear plan of care, (2) shady billing event, and (3) missing a parasite in a fecal test.(1) Rushed visit w/ unclear plan of care: Our first visit with the vet was short and rushed. At the end of it we were left in the exam room and we weren't sure if we were supposed to leave or wait around. We thought there would be some sort of summary or plan of care. (2) Shady billing: When we checked out, the price they gave us did not match the price on our printed invoice. We hadn't presented a coupon the vet gave us in the exam room because the charge was $0.00 for that item on our invoice-why present a coupon when the price appears to be zero? The woman at the desk was rude: "OH, well if you have a COUPON..." They waited for us to contest the price rather than getting it right the first time. I am concerned that they may be making other billing mistakes.(3) Missed a parasite: I returned later with a fecal sample. Unfortunately we had noticed that our dog had worms in his poop. When I dropped off the sample I told a woman at the front desk that we had noticed the worms and I asked what we could do about it. She told me that I should wait until the lab test comes back. Fair enough. (To her credit, this was not the same woman as before-this one was very pleasant.) But, someone called back the next day to say that the lab result was normal. No parasites. I contested the result because we saw 1 cm white worms, clearly alive, in the sample we dropped off. We're waiting to hear back, but we're also looking for another vet. Read Less

I brought my cat in to get a large gash on her stomach looked at.  The woman at the front desk was clueless and rather rude.  The doctors/vets were actually nice and seemed very skilled, so that part was OK.  However, I needed to go pick up my daughter from her school before the appointment was over.  I asked if I could go and come right back afterwards, taking a total of approximately 20 minutes.  I was told, "Sure - no problem".  But when I returned and was leaving with my cat, I realized that they had charged me a housing fee to hold onto my cat for me.I understand businesses need to bill for their time and resources, and I have no problem with that.  The problem lies in not being very clear and forthright about what you're billing for and how.   If they told me I would have to pay them a fee to stick my cat into a box for twenty minutes, I would have taken the cat with me.  I was really upset at this, not just because of the money but because it made me feel taken advantage of.Additionally, the antibiotic that the vet recommended for my cat ultimately made no difference in her recovery...but it cost me over $60.  I couldn't get her to take the medicine, so I finally stopped trying and hoped for the best.  her gash healed up, scabbed over, and now is fully healed...all without any medicine or help.  I tried to take back a completely unopened, unused vial of the antibiotic to BAH, but they refused to take it back and refund me the money.I originally came to this pet hospital to try and save some money because I'm unemployed and have an extremely tight budget to manage.  I was previously going to the Phinney Ridge Animal Hospital up on 83rd and Greenwood, and now I think I'm going to go back to them because, even though they were expensive, they were up front and very clear about their fees, and were visibly sensitive to my budget concerns.I've had it with this place.  If money is no object, then be my guest.  But I felt like I was being taken to the cleaners by these people. I just started taking my pets here. Super friendly techs and front office staff. One of my cats went from his normal assholery to full on Godzilla during his appointment but no one complained about having to use the heavy duty cat gloves to hold him still while the cardiologist did his echo. My other cat came down with a herpes infection and even though she was blowing bubbles out her nose, her eyes were crusty, and she was wheezing, everyone petted her softly and told her she was beautiful. The first time I went there was after I moved to Seattle from Michigan. This was the second vet I had ever been to aside from an amazing clinic in Ann Arbor. The vet (Dr. Berry) did a thorough exam, answered all my questions, and we conducted a couple of tests. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with my experience and I would have given them four stars.A year later I went back for an annual checkup. A very inexperienced assistant came in, said some really weird things like "does he even have a butthole, I can't find it!", and asked me two questions, then left. A new doctor came in, held my dog down for half a minute, listened to his heart/breathing, and then said, okay, I'll be back with a "plan."I wasn't really sure what she meant but it turns out the three minutes that she was with my dog was the actual visit. She sent in a second assistant with the "plan," including a barrage of tests for things that were not even issues. When I contested that no, in fact I did not need a Heartworm exam since my dog has not left the state of Washington in the past 2 years, he then proceeded to tell me I had just moved to Seattle 6 months ago. Wrong. Dude didn't bother reading the chart somehow rewrote history about when I moved across the country... thanks. And when I questioned him about possible Heartworm symptoms and the like, he was completely unable to answer my questions and stood there smiling like a robotic jackass.Anyway, there's nothing wrong with this Animal Hospital. I may have gotten some bad luck with new staff members (the first vet I saw was out of town that day) but it was bad enough that I don't think I'll be going back. Overall, the prices aren't too expensive but the service is terrible and the staff seems aloof and inexperienced. 2 stars and see-ya. Read Less

Moving from the midwest to the Pac NW required a lot of changes for us and our dog and finding a vet we were comfortable with was one of our top priorities. After trying a few other places we came across Ballard Animal Hospital and have been huge fans ever since. Our dog isn't afraid to go in and is always treated very well by both the doctors and the vet techs. Their prices are very reasonable. An emergency arose recently late and night and we had to take our pup to a 24/7 animal hospital, which ended up faxing all our information back to Ballard AH. They called us the next day a few times to make sure our dog was doing fine. I feel they give above and beyond service and I'm always sure to refer anyone I hear of looking for a vet to them. Ballard Animal Hospital is not my primary vet clinic, but I do use them from time to time because I foster animals through a local organization that partners with them and also because I can easily get my felines looked at in a pinch (unlike the other clinic I rely on primarily). I've had at least six different vets (over a 4 year period) and have been pleased with every single one of them. This clinic is reasonably-priced, is easy to contact and schedule appointments with, does tremendous work at a discount for at least one animal shelter (a huge bonus in my opinion), and has always treated my kitties (and me) with compassion and professionalism. I recommend them to people all the time. Dr. Rowse is fabulous and has been there for more than thirty years. Dr Howe, who recently took over the clinic, has clearly made an effort to continue the great care they provide to pets as well as to update/modernize the facility and operations without losing BAH's distinct atmosphere. I had always liked the decor, even if that is not a factor in my decision to take my pets there. I think you will always find dissatisfied clients; it's the nature of health care that some consumers will be unhappy, as we still do not know everything, because there is often more than one way to manage a condition, if any known way at all and because veterinarians are human and can make mistakes, too. Similarly, prices and services vary widely in the Seattle area. I recommend all people do a little shopping around with their own health care and with veterinary care, too. This is one clinic, though, that I recommend locals check out. Read Less

Read Less
