Northwest Veterinary Hospital

Seattle, Washington
General Info
Northwest Veterinary Hospital in Seattle delivers proactive veterinary care shaped by behavior patterns seasonal risks and neighborhood rhythms that influence pet wellness across Washington. A visit initiates through discussions about daily rhythms which include energy fluctuations and dietary habits alongside social behaviors and sleep quality combined with environmental stressors. The examination progresses into a full-body evaluation that encompasses joint testing oral health checks dermatological screening and posture review. Veterinarians record animals' responses to tactile stimuli and applied force to assess potential discomfort alongside muscular or biomechanical restrictions. Experts examine historical data to identify patterns suggesting metabolic shifts alongside musculoskeletal stress and behavioral adaptations. Northwest Veterinary Hospital provides diagnostic screenings vaccination programs blood and fecal tests nutritional consults and pain management plans. Visit pacing can reflect local climate—such as allergy season in spring parasite spikes in summer and arthritis-focused reviews during colder months. Animals belonging to breeds with anxiety tendencies or chronic health issues may attend milestone visits at staggered intervals to enhance monitoring. Pet owners receive detailed summaries along with habit logs and follow-up care intervals while also having access to optional digital check-in options. Individuals responsible for senior pets or multiple animals have the option to request adaptive scheduling telehealth services and behavior-linked recheck frameworks to maintain manageable care. Through structured observation and seasonal alignment practices Northwest Veterinary Hospital equips Seattle and Washington state pet owners with tools to anticipate and respond—turning veterinary visits into a proactive care routine.

The Harborview of animal hospitals. They provide an amazing service 24 hours a day. My little weiner dog had back surgery, and a year later, he shows no signs of ever being injured. He plays ball and swims around just like he did before. They also have state of the art facilities that can handle health issues in ways you wouldn't think of. They provide 'round the clock intensive care for serious health issues, like congestive heart failure. Which my parents dog had. Now she's on meds, and is better than she's been in over a year. We have been going to Northwest Veterinary Hospital for more than four years now. We started at the recommendation of a friend when we first moved in to the Fremont/Wallingford area, and have been impressed with the service and treatment ever since we started. We work with Dr. Whereat, who is just fantastic with all three of our dogs, and who was absolutely wonderful when one of our former pets had to be euthanized (he had a long, good life). Dr. Whereat is always pleasant, helpful, thorough, and very honest. She takes time to explain things and answer questions, so we always feel like we have the information we need to make the right care decisions. The staff of greeters and technicians are equally wonderful and make us and our pets feel welcome, which helps calm the dogs' a bit, since they're never thrilled about the visits (LOL). The added bonus is that it's about a 5-minute drive from our house, so we get excellent care that is really close and convenient. It all gives us great peace of mind. Highly recommend. Read Less

My dog was dying and as a last ditch effort I visited Dr. Donovan. Abbey's heart had congested heart failure and he was very clear to me the path would not be recovery but more about how we try to extend her ultimate path. He introduced to to his colleague Dr Edwards. I've written a separate 5 star review Green Animal Hospital. but it was Dr Donovan that gave me 8 more months with Abbey. For that I will always be grateful. I moved away from NW Vets because of rumors of the big vet conglomerate and possible reduced  care, but make no mistake they are still as caring and practice good vet medicine as when they were independent. Because of their extended network now Dr. Donovan was able to draw on additional resources ie. Dr Edwards and did a much better diagnosis and course of action than Urban Animal. I'm back as a regular customer now, so sad I even moved away because other care were never as good. Pet medicine is never cheap but if you're going to spend that money you should spend it somewhere where they really care about your pet. Read Less

I would have given zero stars, but that's not an option. This morning, I brought my dog in to see if they could help him since he appeared to be choking on a small piece of wrapper he grabbed off the table. Unfortunately, I mistook this clinic for the emergency clinic a few blocks away. When I arrived, the door was locked and a receptionist was inside. There was another employee who had just arrived and was walking her dog in the front before she went in to work. The receptionist came outside and let me know they weren't yet open (it's 7am) and when I informed her I thought my dog was choking and I thought they were the emergency clinic she let me know there were no doctors there and then told me where the emergency clinic was. I turned back to my car to head to the other clinic and at about this moment, my dog got free of his collar and took off running towards 50th ave. This intersection is a very busy intersection. I did not have any treats available to help try to coax my dog back to the parking lot. In order to get him away from the heavy morning traffic I led him off into the residential areas. My car sat in front of this clinic for over an hour while I attempted to figure out how to grab him without having him run into the road. At one point he bolted across four lanes of traffic to the Kid Valley parking lot where a man was kind enough to grab the scruff of his neck so I could grab him before he ran off into traffic - again. Once I got back to my car - which is still in their parking lot an hour later - the receptionist barely looked up as I was carrying my dog across the street. I am so disappointed by the interaction - or lack thereof - when going to a veterinary clinic for help, not only am I turned away during an urgent situation but there was no attempt to help corral a loose animal on a busy highway during rush hour which shows me there is not one shred of empathy from this clinic. I will never patronize this clinic or any of their affiliated offices (of which I am - as of today - a former client).Read Less

I admit that I lucked into finding this place. I'm a first-time dog owner (though experienced with cats), and I jumped right in by adopting an 8-week-old puppy.  I chose Northwest because Dr. Whereat is the closest PSVMA member vet, and they honored the certificate for a free exam that was given to me by the Humane Society.  It was a great choice!  Perhaps the best recommendation I can give is that my puppy absolutely loves Northwest.  The receptionists, techs, and Dr. Whereat all work hard to make sure that he has a fun time on every visit, doing the minimum number of procedures and bribing him with toys, food, and attention.  Even though our first visit was for shots and a check-up including rectal thermometer (and we've been back for the second round since), my now four-month-old puppy pulls towards that building whenever we walk through the neighborhood (we're still working on polite on-leash behavior), and spends his visits wagging his tail in joy. From a more human perspective, I also appreciate that Northwest charges reasonable fees, and doesn't make up the difference by pushing me to buy flea treatment or pet food directly from them.  Dr. Whereat does a good job explaining what she thinks is minimally necessary, and provides the information I need to make a decision on the above-and-beyond treatments (e.g. heartworm preventative, since heartworm is not a problem in Seattle but can be found in some of the places I travel) myself.  Also, Northwest is great about follow-up calls and quick question drop-ins (e.g. requests for records or to weigh the puppy or even for advice on flea meds), and everyone respects the limits I set as part of training (no one rewards my puppy for jumping, no matter how cute he is).  Dr. Whereat is efficient enough to seem brusque on first meeting, but she was more approachable on the second, and she also seems knowledgeable and, again, the puppy loves her!  I hope not to spend too much time at the vet, but it's nice to know I have a good one when I need her. Do not go to this place. Well unless you want to waste your money. My family took our dog here several times over the course of a year and half for a skin rash. Each visit was several hundred dollars. And they never did anything to help and only said he must be allergic to something. No shit. I assumed as much. The last time we were there the Vet told us the same thing they had previously told us the last several visits. They also did some blood work this time. At the end of the appointment I paid and as usual it was $300plus. I then get a phone call the next day saying they never charged me for the blood work. I told them to forget it as I was fed up going there and wasting my money. A couple months later I get a bill in the mail for the blood work which I told them not to do. Of course I'm not going to pay them for something I didn't agree to and is not going to help my dog. Well they decided to send it to a collection agency in lieu of trying to work something out. This place is a joke. Oh and by the way I took my dog to another vet and they prescribed him some medication on the first visit and the problem was solved. I swear I feel like  Northwest Veterinary Hospital kept misdiagnosing the problem on purpose so we would keep going back.I would give 0 stars if I could! Read Less

They were so incredibly professional and compassionate in a very difficult time.  My 13 year old cat had been slowing down over a few months, but one morning he began limping and refusing to eat.   I had had a terrible experience with our previous vet and based on the yelp reviews (and location) I chose to take Corgan to NW Vet Hospital instead.Come to find out, Corgan had a large tumor that was causing him great distress, and amidst my sobs, they tactfully explained my 'options' in a very compassionate and humane way. Then they gave my husband and I privacy to make the decision to put him to sleep,  and were extremely accommodating to let us come back to the clinic that week when we were 'ready'.  It allowed us to enjoy our last day with Corgan and appreciate  our great times together.  Everyone there: the front desk receptionists, the vet tech, and  Dr., each shared their true compassion yet maintained their professional at our situation It was a heartbreaking way to find a new vet but I am  so grateful I found them! We've been bringing our dog here for about a year and have always been satisfied with the service.  The location is ideal for us as it's just a short drive from home. The lobby is comfortable and clean and the staff at the front desk is always super nice and welcoming.  I've never had to wait for more than a few minutes for an appointment or to check out after seeing the doctor.  When the vet recommended a vaccination for my dog that he hadn't previously had, he took the time to explain exactly what it was for me and made sure I understood completely before making a decision.  Most vets I've seen before would just simply tell me that the dog needs it and that's it.  He also gave me options for additional vaccinations that other pets get in the area and let me know that the decision of whether or not to get them is completely up to me.  I never felt like he was trying to sell me on them and truly appreciated his honesty when he said some of them are likely not worth the extra cost.I have been to vets in the past where they always end up "highly recommending" that I use the shampoo/conditioner/special food that they just happen to sell there.  I have often felt like a trip to the vet is somewhat like a trip to a used car dealership.  I really love that they don't do that here!  I always feel comfortable, welcome and valued during our visits. One of my favorite things about it though, is a little silly - but totally awesome.  When they send postcard reminders for things like vaccination updates or exams they always send a photo of my dog!  It's just such a nice touch - I always love it when I find one in the mailbox and it makes me much more likely to call and follow up because it puts me in a good mood. Thanks, NW Vet! My partner and I treat our animals as family members and are very selective about their care, and we have always been pleased with NVH.  We have both a dog and cat we bring here for annuals, and NVH put one of our pets to rest last year in a very gentle and compassionate manner.  I've been told they may also come to your home for this as well. They do tend to be a bit pricey, but in my experience it has been worth it!  I've never had a vet spend less than a half and hour with us during a visit, all of the tech staff are warm and kind, and everyone is very, very thorough, even the front desk staff.  My cat is due to have dental work this spring and I wouldn't trust anyone else to put her under anesthesia. The facility itself is clean and spacious -- I don't know what the people who have complained about the size of the rooms are talking about.  The waiting room comfortably seats about a dozen guests, plus animals in carriers, and I've never had to wait there anyway -- I'm normally escorted straight to an exam room, where my pets are calmed and offered treats and cuddles.  Highly recommend! YET ANOTHER 5 STAR REVIEW!!!!!!! I love this vet hospital and feel so LUCKY that I found them! I had a very bad experience at Banfield on the Wellness plan, and will never go that route again! I had been advised after my experience at Banfield to find a good private vet and I had always gone to Northwest Vet Hospital to get my cats food. They were one of the nicest vets with such wonderful staff and they were one of the only vets that allowed me to get prescription food for one of my pets without being seen at their facility! I finally switched to them and have been bowled over by their professionalism. It doesn't feel like a vet it feels like a hospital and they treat your pets very seriously and with fabulous beside manner. I particularly LOVE Dr. Donovan, he's extremely scientific and helpful in his approach, taking on rare occasions extremely educated guesses so as to help you bypass additional, costly and redundant procedures and since I'm unemployed I have been so happy about this! They also have worked with me on the financial aspect because of my situation. Dr. Jones is a wonderful vet too! He's been in the business for 40 years and knows his stuff. Together Dr. Jones and Dr. Donovan make a great team. Every doctor here is wonderful! Bravo! Read Less

Read Less

He treats you like you know nothing about your own pet, he is smug, arrogant and does not listen at all....My dog was diagnosed 2 days later with a  very serious illness. If he had just simply taken his temperature (106.1), enough said.He didn't care that my lab was not eating, smelled funny, and was breathing extremely weird.  have seen a lot of vets, but he was the worst.Just find somewhere else...The staff were great Read Less

My small Papillon was attacked at woodland park one evening.  I basically grabbed her and ran to my car and started driving to the nearest vet...being Northwest Veterinary Hospital.I had gone there in the past with a previous dog but hadn't been there since moving away and moving back to Seattle with my new dog.Anyways, I show up in tears, and they wouldn't even look at my dog.  They said they had appointments waiting and they were behind schedule.  I had to jump back in my car in rush hour traffic and fight my way to the emergency Vet that thank goodness was not to far away.I had no idea the extent of my poor dogs injuries until the wonderful people at Emerald City took her and let me know that she had 5 severe bite wounds and a hole in her abdomen causing a hernia... Time was the essence...and I got her there just in the nick of time.I asked my sister who happens to be a Vet in California if she would of turned us away in that situation. She said she would have at least of gotten the dog stabilized before transferring her somewhere else.  The receptionists were callous and completely worthless in my opinion considering the heartbreaking and scary situation that I was in.Thanks for nothing Northwest Vet. I came here on a friend's recommendation when I first moved to Seattle.Dr. Donovan and Dr. Whereat have been treating my Bulldog, Lucy for about 5 years. Both of them are wonderful caring and professional doctors who I trust very much. I can't say enough great things about Northwest Vet. The staff is amazing, kind and accommodating. As Lucy gets older we have more frequent unplanned visits, and we are always able to get in to see the doctor in a timely manner. The office is clean, and in a convenient location with ample parking. We never have to wait more than a few minutes to get into an exam room. It's one of the best recommendations I've ever received. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about NW Veterinary Hospital. I've taken all of my pets here. I currently have a Bengal cat and a Eskipoo. Dr. Donovan is fabulous. Both of my pets like him very much. Everyone from the front desk staff to the technicians do all they can to ensure a calm and fun environment. Yes, their prices can be higher than so other places but as another reviewer mentioned, the price is totally worth it. You know you are getting top quality care for your pet. They also work with you to find cost-effective solutions when options are available. Read Less

Bravo! Read Less
