As always, the staff and doctors showed compassion and skill as they informatively shared the issues my big ole fat boy was dealing with on this visit. They were able to manage the multiple issues he had in the course of one, albeit long, visit and he came out happier and feeling better. 28 years ago I brought in my puppy, he had spots all over his belly and I panicked. Dr Young put his hand on my shoulder and in his calming voice told me they were freckles. My dog was fine. For the next 12 years my dogs saw Dr Young for every ache and pain. They were treated with love and great care. And in the end, the love and compassion shown by the staff and Dr Young when I said goodbye to my dogs, will never be forgotten.... I then had a cat. Dr Deal was the one who was there for her and again at the end of my cats life, there was so much love and compassion. I can’t say enough about the staff of Rainier Beach Vets. I have experienced consistently good service from the Rainier Beach vets. My initial visit was an emergency when my dog cut her foot, and they provided prompt caring service, and good follow-up. We have since decided to switch all the care for our cat and dog to this vet, and we are very satisfied. The one complaint we had about their service was that they only offered walk-in hours, but about a year ago they switched to an appointment based system, and that works much better for us. They still offer walk in hours on Saturdays, for those who need them. I recommend this vet. Read Less

I used to love Rainier Beach Vet. Dr. Young is the best!!!! And the staff is great. I am in my fifties and my family has gone to this clinic as long as I can renember. But now things aren't the same. And it's not about the price hikes it's just doesn't feel like "home" anymore. The. Partnership with the Rainier Veterinary Clinic isn't working for me. I have never been a fan of that clinic or the way it does business and I'm sad that, that way the business has now come to this clinic. For over 30 years, I used Rainier Veterinary Hospital for my MANY pets.  But, after my third vet retired and Dr. Nicholson bought the practice, everything changed; and, not for the better.Starting with my first experience, I was told that ALL bills, regardless of the extent of the cost, were expected to be paid in full at the time of visit.  As I always had several pets and believed in keeping them healthy regardless of expense, I always ended up paying over several months.  All THREE vets knew I was good as gold when it came to paying.  For this, I was eternally grateful. However, this new policy compounded with an incident that caused Dr. Nicholson a major shake up in her daily routine was also an issue.  I had called and scheduled an appointment for "two" pets, but only one was noted.  When I arrived with two, it created a major problem because it threw her schedule off for the entire day.  CAN YOU IMAGINE IF SHE HAD TO CONTEND WITH AN EMERGENCY WALK IN???At the time of that visit, my cat was given a prescription for his medical condition.  At that moment, I didn't recognize that it was the same medication that almost killed him on a previous occasion.  It was only after I got home and looked at the name and realized what I was dealing with.  I immediately called and asked if it wasn't noted in my records that my cat could not tolerate this drug.  IT WAS ON RECORD!   But, it was my fault because I had caused her to be in a hurry because of the "two for one" mix up.  During that call, she mentioned that it would probably be better that we do not do business.  I could not agree more.  THE END OF "RAINIER VETERINARY HOSPITAL" after 38 years.After floating around for almost two years, I found Dr. Young.  I loved him!   But now, what are the odds of this woman TAKING OVER HIS PRACTICE !   Now, once again, I'm looking for a new vet.  I always liked the morning walk-in hours; but, I can certainly see that coming to an end because Dr. Nicholson needs a set schedule to operate by to keep her sanity. I'm sad to write this review. I've been bringing my fur children to Dr. Deal and Dr. Young for years. Their prices and service and flexible walk in hours are the best. Unfortunately, they apparently recently merged with Rainier Vet (i guess everyone got tired of the name confusion?!), and I fear all the things that are good about RBVH are going away.First, they are transitioning to requiring appointments, except none of the longtime patients seem to have gotten the memo, so to speak. With only one staff member working the front, and computer upgrades happening at the same time, it took more than an hour to get seen as a walk in (and I was literally the third person in the door, lined up fifteen minutes before they opened). Also the new doctor, Nicholson, from the other clinic, is preachy and condescending. She lectured me against using products that Dr. Young had specifically recommended, and tried to upsell me repeatedly on products that if she'd seen my dogs chart (which was conveniently lost in the file transition...), she might have known that I'd previously discussed and determined were NOT appropriate for my dogs.Anyways, I could ignore a rude and pushy, if she were at least good with animals, but then she went and hurt my dog. She couldn't manage to give one vaccine without jabbing the poor dog so hard he screamed and jumped off the table into my arms. So we had to do it a second time, more pokes, more yelling. I get it. Shots aren't fun. But in seven years, my dogs never reacted like that to a shot. Then, New doctor took him into the back alone for some pre-op bloodwork. Seeing how she treated him with me in the room, I was nervous, but what are you going to do? Anyways, fifteen minutes later, they have to carry him out to me because he can't walk! I got him home, whimpering in pain the whole way, and he's been limping around the house ever since... When he moves at all. He's mostly just lying in the floor, exhausted from the ordeal. After years of excellent care, today was such an unpleasantI'm not sure I'll actually schedule the surgery. I definitely won't allow Dr. Nicholson to touch my dog ever again.  aNow that you have to make an appointment to be seen here, I guess that's the one silver lining--i'll be able to specify who I'd like to see.  Dr. Young and Dr. Deal still get 5 stars! I have been taking my dogs to Dr.young for years now and won't trust any other get to take care of my babies..my dog butterbean let out a yelp and then was paralyzed from the neck down,i didn't know what was the matter with him..the doctor determined he suffered from a stroke. I took him to Dr.young and he was there for 11 days and nights,Dr.Young and his staff tooksuch good care of him ...he couldn't go potty his own so they put a catheder on him and they had to hand feed him because he wasn't able to eat on his own,after the xrays and blood work and all the 24 hr.care he only charged me $250...there's no way he made any money on me because he charged so little for so much care..I have since refered him to at least 20 of my friends and they all agree with me...I will only let Dr.young care for my babies forever...he's the best and most caring doctor I have ever met!!! I am writing a review for Rainier Beach Veterinary Hospital in Rainier Beach, not for Rainier Veterinary Hospital (located on Rainier and Dearborn in Seattle).  As a huge animal lover (with a multi pet household), I take veterinary care and cost quite seriously.  Having tried a number of local clinics and vet. hospitals, I feel great about giving Rainier Beach Veterinary Hospital a top rating.  My last dog developed cancer late in life, and the compassion and technical expertise demonstrated by Drs. Young and Deal, over the course of several procedures extended his life to be sure.  Putting a pet to sleep is the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life (brings tears to me even now), and they handled that matter with me so perfectly and with more grace and care at such a tough time.  I don't always like dealing with "walk in only" hours, but with a little common sense, this is easily managed: whenever possible, go as early as possible and mid-week to have the shortest wait possible.  Last but not least, their prices are better than any I've ever seen, but don't let that fool you: their care is second to none, same with their technical capability. Dr Young has been an excellent vet, my 12 year old West Highland Terriers entire life. He spade her, and has given her vaccinations. Also when she has had a dental issue, two times, he has extracted a broken tooth, and done cleanings. I know several other people, who have taken their pets as well, he is kind, good with animals, and has always worked hard, to have very reasonable pricing for all of my pets needs!! Great staff and affordable prices. EDIT: Sorry I really really really needed to edit my post. This place is amazing. Utterly amazing. A couple month ago my cat wasn't acting right and lost a ton of weight, drastically, we rushed him here to this facitlity where Dr. Young and his staff took him in to run extra analysis. Turned out he had cancer, a real aggressive form in the pancrease. Dr. Young asked if we could keep him for a week to run extra diagnostics as well as other treatments. I agreed and for the entire week I was on pins and needles. Edge of my seat from morning to close waiting for an answer on my boy. They were kind and updated me every afternoon about his condition, and every day it wasn't look too good. Finally, on New Years Eve, the day the office was closed and the entire staff was off, Dr. Young told me that no treatment would be able to fix his issue and that jaundice was starting to hit really hard. All he can do is tell me that there was no way he could fight it, and if we were to go the option of cancer medication/treatment, it's not as good as it is for humans. Might get a couple of months, if that, and pay A LOT in order to make it happen. He left the choice up to us, but if we wanted, he would allow us to come in and say our good byes. So on New years eve, Dr. Young drove in, and we all sat down to say good bye to my beloved friend. I'm not going to lie, I cried ridiculously hard, harder then I ever did for even family members. Its hard when you put so much love and care to a pet or a child that you took care of. That was love from a nurturing stand point, and there was nothing I could do. I took a while for me to say good bye, but the Dr. was amazing, he was patient, and he knew what I was going through. He's seen it before, probably the hardest part of his job. I know he wants the best for all his clients, but sometimes you can't save them all. For the way he handled that situation, Rainier Beach Vet, specially Dr. Young, they got my business for life. They even sent me a card in the mail, helping to console me. That's something you don't get in this world anymore; compassion, kindness, caring. We have been going to Dr Young and his team for at least 15 years. The best care you can get. We now live in Madronna and still take our cats to see him. My youngest daughter's cat swallowed thread that got tangled in her intestines. Dr Young preformed surgery and even took her home with him to nurse her through. They went way above and beyond the care I expected on my last visit (cat bite). The doctor is great! My sister recommend this vet to us after taking her very large 100 lb dog and loved them because the staff was very friendly and knew how to "speak" to her dog. Many vets have been scared of her large dog and because they were scared her dog was defensive. Dr. Young is in the business for all the right reasons and has been very helpful to us and he has very reasonable prices! He even calls to follow up on his patients! Who does that anymore?! When our German Shepherd "Spike" stuck her nose in my chainsaw, there wasn't much left unopened. We tossed her in the truck and zipped her down to Dr. Young at the Rainier Beach Vet Clinic. "emergency room". They took her in upon arrival, kept her overnight, stitched her up and saved her life. That was about 6 years ago, Spike still has a slightly crooked nose, but who wouldn't after having encountered a chain saw. We cannot say enough good things about the Rainier Vet Clinic, Dr. Young or all the wonderful staff at Rainier Beach Veterinary Hospital. Spike is still loving life today. Read Less

My dog overdosed on Rimadyl (she ate the entire bottle) and I rushed her into RBVH during their walk-in hours. I got her there within 60 minutes of her ingesting the medicine and they saw her right away. I sat there for 2 hours waiting with no update until I asked. Finally I was told that I needed to leave her there and to call back at 4pm for an update. I did appreciate that they understood the severity of the situation and started treatment right away, but the lack of communication left me unsettled. When I called back at 4pm, I was told the doctor had left for a dentist appointment but I could come pick her up. I picked her up and never got to speak to the vet but was told they administered fluids and made her vomit. I assumed everything was fine. WRONG. 48 hours later she was vomiting blood and we had to rush her to a different 24 hour emergency vet in Olympia (on Christmas Eve). This vet was horrified to find out that RBVH had not done any blood tests to make sure she didn't go into acute liver or kidney failure, they did not administer charcoal, nor did they put her on medicine to protect her stomach from bleeding (an extremely common side effect of overdosing on Rimadyl). So $600 later we got her fluids, anti-nauseau medicine, and plenty of stomach protectorants. I feel like a terrible pet mother for not insisting that I see the vet and letting her get worse without knowing it because RBVH did not treat her with the standard treatment options for a Rimadyl overdose. Yeah, it was $65 to get my baby treated, but they didn't do a good job and now $600 she is still not better. I am very disappointed with their care (and my lack of advocacy for my pet) and will not be going back there.Read Less

I love this place! I live in Belltown and I have to bus it down there, but it is well worth it. I had been going to another vet for years, but after another increase of their office visit charge and a flubbed treatment of my dog, I heard about Dr. Young and tried him out. We can't say enough about the care our furry friends receive at RBVH. We've taken two dogs there and one cat, and Dr. Deal is simply wonderful with them. In 2014 our one dog was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and after some chemo and care from an oncologist, we stopped chemo and concentrated on a high quality of life for his remaining days. Dr. Deal was great, administering acupuncture and treating his various other ailments. He had another wonderful six months.Read Less

I had Vets before who would not take care of Sammy unless he was sedated by me first. That never happened again when I took Sammy to see Dr. Young. When Dr. Deal joined the staff all was still good. They have all been amazing and so caring to me and my fur kids. Through the good times and the end of times. Always caring. Very funny front staff. They make me smile or laugh, even when I don't feel like it. When the end came for my Sammy, they were all very compassionate and caring. Dr. Young and Dr. Deal are fantastic veterinarians and wonderful people. We have taken all three of our fur babies here since 2008 and the experience has always been positive. The cost of care is very reasonable. One of our dogs had a severe liver problem recently, and the staff provided excellent care, kept us informed of all options, and helped us get our little girl healthy again. I can't say enough good things about this vet. One important note: they keep costs down by offering walk in visits only, no appointments. Best to show up a bit before they open and expect to wait. Dr Young and his staff have always been very caring with my pets. They are honest about what's going on and never try to upsell you on services or products. I've taken 3 cats and 2 dogs there. I have visited many different types of Veterinary services on both the North and South end of Seattle in my 16 years here. You would be had press to find a better Veterinary service with a more caring Vet and staff for your Family friend. This not only applys to pets accompinied with their owner but Dr. Young has been known to provided services for animals who are not claimed, the cost is out of his own pocket. Rainier Beach was recommended to me 4 years ago by a co-worker who has been taking her pets there for years. Although I drive 20-30 minutes each way to get to/from, it is well worth it. Not only is the clinic clean and the staff very nice/helpful, but having your pet cared for here is extremely affordable. Dr. Young is amazing...very compassionate. Recently, I had to say goodbye to my beloved cat August and Dr. Young came to my house (at no extra charge and after a long day at work) so that August could spend the last minutes of his life in a familiar, comfortable environment surrounded by those who love him. I moved out of the area but would make the trek to RBV instead of finding a new vet. the pet owner below is crazy, this is the most caring and low priced vet i have ever been to. My dad has been taking his dog here for 10 years, and i have been taking my dog here for 5 years. Not long after i got her i found out she had Parvo, if you have dogs, you know how serious this illness is. It takes 9 days to run its course, it basically sucks your animal dry while making them unable to eat or drink anything. I took her in on her 5th day of having the illness, not knowing what it was. He immediately pumped fluids into her through an IV and kept her for 3 days making sure she recieved the nutrition she needed while the illness ran its course. Had she not been recieving these nutritions through an IV, she would have surely died. She was maybe 3 months old at the time. For the 3 nights she stayed, plus the IV treatment, and the meds she came home with he charged us $90.00. You tell me where you can find a vet that will keep a dog for 3 days, save them from PARVO, and prescribe medication for $90.00. No where else. he is the best. Read Less

Figaro was taken to this Rainier Beach Hospital, at emergency. He was hit vicious by somebody and lost his use of the front right leg. The doctor did nothing to ease his pain and he died during the next night. The doctor supposed to know if he had chances, then fix him, and if not, put him to sleep. I thnk that he suffered for about 20 hours. He also mistreated two other of my cats. My opinion is that everybody that takes the pet there, are taking risks. I hope it will not happen to you.
