I have been taking my dogs to Rainier Vet Hospital since 1982. Been though several doctors and techs and have always had good results. Before there were set appointments, there were long wait times. Was really glad they went to set appointments. My dogs, all four of them, have always been treated with love and care, even when they were a handful. I always felt comfortable leaving them there. My most recent vet, Dr. Beestman, is very kind and gentle. the rates are reasonable, the location for me is great, and I know my Aksel is well taken care of by everyone there. Read Less

I adopted a Border Collie from the Seattle Humane Society back in 2007. Over the course of her life she had a lot of health problems. I tried a couple of Vets first but they were obscenely expensive and appeared to be in the pet business purely for the money. I thought the service and compassion from the people at RVH was always top notch and when Dr. Choy became my dog's regular vet I felt even better about the hospital. She was always wonderful and kind. In addition, their fees were so much more reasonable than so many other Veterinary Hospitals, it was a no brainer. My dog, who in spite of all her health and behavioral issues was an amazing dog. I really hit the jackpot with her. I'm sorry I didn't take her to RVH for her euthanasia as I'm sure they would have put her down humanely, unlike Bluepearl. I can't say enough about Rainier Veterinary Hospital, the best people with the best prices. Read Less

I have been going to rainier vet for over a year and I absolutely love them. I recently moved back to Portland and actually drove all the way back to Seattle for my English Bulldogs second mass removal surgery (the first was done here as well.) Not only do they love Monster and make him feel super special, but they do a great job and are very affordable. I was quoted a much more reasonable price than I was here in Portland. Not only that, but they allowed me take a photo of my pups tumor and email it over so that they could quote me. In my opinion, that is truly going above and beyond and I appreciate it so much. They really are the whole package. Read Less

When it comes to vets and pets who are like children (meowing, hairy little children), it's difficult to know who to trust. Been coming here for about 6 years and, overall, I can confirm that Ranier Veterinary Hospital gives truly attentive and loving care! First off, this clinic has a real message of caring about animals' well being (and not money or a slick looking interior which used to be quite apparent but has gotten better... not that I really cared about outer appearances anyway though). For a while, I remember they would specifically treat the animals of the community and homeless by accepting walk-ins (which was a kind, non-discriminatory touch), developing custom payment plans, or creating smart or resourceful ways to help the animals at a lower cost. I've said this before about human care, but I'll say it again now: Every medical practice (whether for animals or humans) comes down to the people and experts who work there. Articulation, experience and wisdom all matter and build trust in equal. Naturally, I was heartbroken when Dr. Kung left the practice -- he was truly a gentle and natural master of cats (that was possibly able to read minds) and soothed my pet monster (who was literally yelping in pain) into submission. He had a real gift to be honest with you... and saved my cat's howling life... AND was able to identify a deadly urinary blockage in my kitty's urethra (ew) right away (when time was of the essence). Purr!!Sadly, Dr. Kung left and sold the practice (Luckily, my cat was pretty healthy during this period so no major procedures were needed). Fast forward to now and there's a new vet (Dr. Beestman) who is kind, smart, trustworthy with our beast, and very much a cat person. She knows to burrito our cat at check-ups, which I had to do with my old pet, much like one would put a hood on a hawk to make it feel safe (cats are such emotional little beings, I know). She's also very considerate when it comes to pricing even though we would gladly shell out literally a billion dollars to save our horrible monster cat. He just got his teeth cleaned and he's doing wonderfully. The office kept calling us to give progress updates and let us know if anything unexpected happened or if there were going to be price changes. Very sensitive and kind! All in all, do yourself a favor and come here. If you're an animal person, these people are your type of people. Read Less

Do yourself a favor and trust your fur-babies with these wonderful human beings who work at Rainier Veterinary Hospital. My pup Petunia and I moved recently from Austin and did not have a vet we trusted just yet. After a very un-compassionate visit with another vet in Queen Anne, my best friend demanded I leave that establishment immediately and go see Rainier. We have been through two surgeries thus far and I trust beyond a doubt Petunia is loved to the max when she goes to Rainier Vet Hospital. They are kind and compassionate and answer every single question you have in detail. I live in Queen Anne and make the drive here for my sweet girl to get the best care available. They referred me to a specialist in Shoreline and even they are as wonderful as Rainier. It isn't a big establishment and not updated or sparkling new, but well worth the drive for the outstanding service provided. Read Less

Amazing compassionate staff. Brought in my newly-adopted elderly dog who started having seizures. I brought him in to do a work up knowing the very real possibility that it might be our last day together. The vet assistant, Chris, was super gentle and kind with my deaf and scared dog- I've actually never seen someone warm up to him so quickly (took me a week!!). When my dog started having seizures in the clinic, Dr. Beestman took him right away to help him. After coming in to check on me multiple times, giving me extra scrubs to change into (lots of pee!), and discussing the various options, we agreed the best thing was to put him out of his pain. She and Chris were absolutely lovely, caring, and so so compassionate. I was so thankful to encounter such a wonderful staff on my first visit there. I'm a physician (and didn't tell them) and can honestly say they provide such wonderful and excellent care here. This place is a jewel. Read Less

My family has been coming here with our pets since I was in kindergarten (I'm 28 now!). Over the years the staff has changed but the quality of customer service and care has not which is nothing short of amazing. From helping us with a kitten we found who had to bottle fed because it was too young to eat solids to my current dog's allergy issues, Rainier has always been there for my family and I. Sure, it's not as fancy or trendy as say, Urban Animal (which I've been to twice and left when they mixed up my dog's prescription and accidentally gave him steroids he didn't need! Eeek! Unforgivable in my book). But are you there for the hipster staff or to get health care for your pets?! I can't say enough good things about Rainier. The entire staff is always professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. I always have come to appreciate the doctors being willing to sit with me as long as needed and talk about my concerns and steps moving forward. Unlike some veterinary clinics where I've felt rushed by doctors...I'm looking at you Urban Animal...I've never felt that way with the staff at Rainier. Lastly, prices are more than reasonable which I know can be a concern when dealing with more complicated/persistent health issues. Too long/didn't read: Been coming here for over 20 years; excellent care and service; fair prices. Read Less

Rainier Veterinary.... no thank you. I've been to other vets and know what to expect.   This place is too busy for me and my pet. I guess these vets  need another vacation home or something, because if you take your pet here, you might need a second mortgage. Been going here for over 2 years, they still don't know my name even after I spell it to them, let alone my pet or his name.Called in a prescription for refill the last 2 times , an never phoned me back to say it was ready. The girls in the back room seemed to be having some kind of party or something. Forget your stupid pets prescription, buddy, we're busy.Had  my pet inspected for a lump, and got the report on the ONE lump. I did my own examination when I got home and found 2 more, which the vet never mentioned. get'em in... get'em out and GET THE $$$$$$$$$$ is their motto.Sorry  Rainier, but you have a lot to learn  about patient attention  and customer satisfaction. You want the $$$$$$, then hone your people and animal skills. Rainier Vet was recommended by my landlord on Mercer Island, so I gave them a try when I first moved here. Rainier is conveniently located right off the 90 and 5 FWY, and although not in my neighborhood, a very easy drive. The whole place is VERY retro, but also very clean and well maintained, but you'll feel like you went back in time 50 years, that said the care is all very modern and they do a great job. The staff ALWAYS greets me warmly, the only time they didn't they were on the phone and called me 5 minutes after I left to apologize for being distracted with an emergency and ask if I had any other questions. During my tenure with Rainier Vet our dogs had two teeth procedures under anesthesia, in both cases, they did a great job for less than the quoted price, and my dogs were up and about in no time. We were often asked if we wanted our usual doctor, but always just saw whoever was available rather than picking one person, so I can say for sure they have many great doctors, never met one my dogs and I didn't like. If you seek AMAZING care for your pets, from really wonderful people, at the best price in town then look no further than Rainier Veterinary! I'm moving on to a new home, but I'll always remember the great care we got here... thank you to the whole team! Read Less

Rainier Vet is THE BEST! They are great with my dog, to the point of doing an "under the arm" temperature instead of the usual butt way because she doesn't like it (what dog does?). They just helped me get all my paperwork squared away to move my dog to Luxembourg, which is a very specific, long process that pretty much takes some expert involvement to get right. When my 10-month old kitty started displaying concerning urinary behavior, I knew I had to do something. After a recommendation from a friend, I made an appointment with Rainier Veterinary Hospital for the following week. After a recommendation from my cat, I called back to see if I could get him in sooner (poor guy) and it turns out they had availability that same day. I rushed him in and Dr. Beestman was able to see him shortly thereafter. She recommended we get a urine sample for good diagnostic measures. The next day I brought in a sample and was contacted the following day by Dr. Beestman to inform me that he has crystals (eek). She recommended a dietary modification which they helped me with and off I went. Urinalysis + Exam + 14 days of Special Crystal Dissolving Food = $145. Not bad.Staff were all super friendly, helpful, accommodating, and knowledgable. I love this place. The facility isn't modern or up to date, but I'm convinced that it's a major contributor to their reasonable prices.  Plus, my mutt doesn't require a fancy facility to keep her healthy. I've seen several different Drs at Rainier Vet Hospital throughout the time I lived in Seattle. I had my Ruby's teeth cleaned as well as having her dangly rear dewclaws removed while she was under anesthesia. The total cost for this was $426, including pain meds, etc. ($220 dental, $75 to add on dewclaw removal, $80 for IV fluids, and around $50 for the associate injections and medications). I was particularly pleased with how non-judgmental the staff is. When I saw the quote for the teeth cleaning, I wanted to discuss some of the optional expenses to see what I really needed and what I might not. Some vets may say "WHAT?! You're opting out of the IV fluids? You're a horrible pet owner!" while Rainier will discuss pros and cons, risks, and costs. Here are the prices that I've had:Wellness Exam $70Office Call Exam $48Gland expression $15Dental Cleaning $220 IV fluids $80Treatment for some kind of worm $9.75Parasite Screening $38Heart worm test is free with 6 month pill supply purchase ($123)The staff is so friendly. Sure, Rainier Vet Hospital doesn't have a posh waiting room. But who cares, when your pet is being treated with the best care in Seattle? And at a very reasonable price, too! I've been coming to this vet clinic with two of my cats over the last 6 years. Before that, I was shelling out WAY too much money on "cat only" vets who just stressed my cat out. This old-school vet clinic is smart, super caring, helpful, and reasonable. It would be a wonderful thing if Rainer could expand new clinics around Seattle so more pets and owners could access their compassionate, down-to-earth care of our animals. PS to cat owners--- bring your cat in a crate because you'll be sharing the waiting room with dogs (but they can move you if need be). Read Less

MissLilson ? I specifically decided to write a review because your review really pissed me off! I adopted my 2 ? year old Black Lab ?Annie? from Seattle Purebred Rescue in August 2010. I was referred to the Rainier Veterinary Hospital from David Wiley, who is a personal dog/obedience trainer with Barkbusters. David referred me there because he said that the vets are very good, rates are reasonable, and it is close to my home. I took Annie for a wellness exam a few weeks ago, and we saw Dr. Heino. He was absolutely amazing! He spent over 1 hour with us and thoroughly went over every issue that we discussed. Annie received a vaccine, stool sample evaluation, and wellness check for only $78. Today, I took Annie back to Dr. Heino for a follow up. He spent 45 minutes with us and was so kind. I am very sad that he has decided to retire at the end of 2010. I have found Dr. Heino?s staff very courteous, and even though Dr. Heino won?t be our vet after he retires, I will absolutely take Annie to another vet at the Rainier Veterinary Hospital! Read Less

This is the worst vet ever. We brought in my 10 year old golden retriever Daisy, for pain in her side and neck. After waiting to see the vet, he did not introduce himself and was very brief. The place had a distinct smell to it, and was very cramped. The vet did not answer any of our questions, and told us nothing except what we already knew. He did nothing to relieve the pain in her neck, and convinced us Daisy needed to have a blood test done, but he did not tell us how much it would cost. When he was done weighing her and drawing her blood, he gave us her leash and left. The receptionist gave us a large bill, $135 for the blood test. I will never bring my dog back here again, even if the check up is cheaper than other vets. Read Less

My elderly Devon Rex cat was very ill--17 years old and not feeling at all well. These people had not seen her before. I was able to get an appointment within 24 hours. These people have the best interests of the animal at heart. Dr. Moriyasu was very competent, and didn't get an attitude that some vets have. She sent my cat home medication and allowed me to give the sub-cu fluids at home, providing me with the Ringer's solution and kit for the fluids. I love this doctor and this clinic. My cat may or may not have a few years left on this earth. For whatever time she does have left, the people at Rainier Veterinary Clinic will be her doctors. They are absolutely wonderful. Read Less

I went to Rainier Veterinary and they provided great service for my Vizsla. I was recommended to them by a coworker with a Lab who received a lot of senior care (specifically through Dr. Heino), and she thought they were wonderful, inexpensive, didn't recommend unnecessary things, and helped her make informed decisions. I agree. The place I ran into a problem was when I moved away and needed my dog's medical records sent to the new vet for continuity of care. However, Rainier vet isn't open on the later evenings or weekends when I call. Their voicemail does not take messages. When I go out of my way to call during business hours (when I should be studying/working/running errands), they are so busy that they don't pick up the phone. However, since, again, they have no voicemail or email, I have been unable to ask for them to send my dog's records to the new vet, despite 3 phone attempts and searching for an email/website via internet. I appreciate their standard of care. I just wish I could get a hold of them so I wouldn't have to keep trying to call them. Read Less

Well, after enduring the rude abuse and high prices of my neighborhood veterinarian, I have finally found a high quality hospital with affordable prices. I'm with everyone else in my fave reviews for Dr. Heino but even the person who is responsible for performing the dental cleanings for pets is top quality. I was given an estimate for one of my cats of $1,000 for a dental exam, potential extractions, prelim blood panel, etc. elsewhere. I paid a fraction of that for the same services (including the preliminary blood exam) with 2 extractions and including take-home medication at Rainier. The professionalism of the vet techs and all of the staff was absolutely exemplary. This place has my business because I feel comfortable in the knowledge that Rainier looks at my pets as patients in need of care as opposed to high-priced potential sales. Read Less

After researching many reviews I took our pair of 5 month old kittens here for check ups and to get familiar with the staff (I like to find one place and stick to it). We were supposed to see Dr. Kung but due to a scheduling mix up we ended up seeing Dr. Moriyasu. I hadn't heard great things about her from the reviews, but I have no idea what those people were talking about. Dr. Moriyasu was very professional and answered any questions we had. She didn't make us feel like idiots when telling us that we should've brought them in 3 times since we'd adopted them for boosters on their vaccinations. She diagnosed the sniffle one of our cats had had since we brought him home as most likely a secondary symptom of Feline Herpes and prescribed some antibiotics which cleared him right up. She was firm yet gentle when speaking to and handling our kitties. I would definately trust her with our cats health in the future. When leaving, I was surprised how little it cost (vaccinations, exam and antibiotics came out to less than $80 each) and the techs/clerical staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to taking them back for boosters in a few weeks. This time I asked to see Dr. Heino, not because I didn't like Dr. Moriyasu, but after reading the reviews I've just got to see what this guy is like. Read Less

I am not sure what happened to the person who had the bad experience with Rainier Vet, but I'm sure it was a fluke. Rainier Vet has the best staff in Seattle and Dr. Heino is the most compassionate, thoughtful and thorough vet. While it is slightly inconvenient to not be able to make an appointment, the benefit of having a vet who takes time to carefully examine and most importantly, have an informed and unrushed conversation with the owner trumps the wait. I have had three cats and when the first one was sick and drying, Dr. Heino treated her with compassion, gave her pain management in her last days, returned my phone calls when I was questioning ""was it time,"" and took great care and sensitivity in putting her down. I have just adopted a new kitty this weekend and tomorrow morning we are heading off to Rainier Vet for a thorough check-up and make sure we are off to a healthy start. Read Less

I've come here with my pets for 4 years (2 cats and a dog). The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable and they treat your pet as if it is their own. The only negative is the fact that you can't make appointments, drop-in only, so you can have no wait time or you may wait several hours. unless you can come early in the morning I would avoid coming in on a Saturday (if you can). Rainier Vet also has affordable boarding services too (but I haven't used them yet). All of my pets have received great care from routine shots to surgeries from cat fights. The prices are about half of what I've paid at other places and the service is better at Rainier Vet then any of the higher-end vets I've been to. Some people might be put off by the decor or the old-school 70's vibe, but I don't go to a vet for the decor. Also, Dr. Heino, Dr. Kung, and Dr. K are all extremely helpful and knowledgeable, especially Dr. Heino, he always goes into detail on how to care for my pets and how to keep them happy and healthy. I gladly wait to see Dr. Heino when my cats or dogs are ill or need shots or even need their nails trimmed. He is compassionate and caring -- and aware that many of his clients can't afford much. Dr. Heino explains conditions very well, using analogies so that those of us who did not take science classes can understand. I admire him: he works 7 days a week and rarely takes a vacation. He has arthritis and a bad back and he still devotes himself to the animals. Dr. K, the surgeon is also good but a little brusque because English is not his native language. Read Less

I recently brought my pet in for boarding. My dog was returned to me with runny bowel movements (this site won't let me use other descriptions) crusted to his stomach and a rash underneath when I cleaned him up. The staff was not aware he had any problems while boarding and never noticed a large mass crusted to his stomach. How often did anyone even look at my dog?? The excuse I was given when I questioned the level of care provided was that the Boarding Manager was on vacation and my dog would have been better cared for if she was in town. When I asked to find a way to resolve the issue I was told that I was out of luck and these things just happen. (Not at a vet clinic my pet would go to!) Also missing a large portion of expensive pet food that was brought in with my pet and nail trim was done poorly. Would not recommend to anyone, regardless of the price. Read Less

I've been going to Rainier Veterinary and Dr. Heino for a number of years now. I've been to many others in the Seattle area and while adequate, none provided the level of knowledge and care I get from Rainier Veterinary. I have yet to find another vet like Dr. Heino who will spend 30 minutes plus with you and your pet on an annual checkup. It's true they don't take appointments (except for surgeries), so it's first come, first served. However, there is a reason people will wait, sometimes hours, to get in and why people sometimes line up an hour before opening on Saturdays. Dr. Heino, et al, are always patient, thorough and explain all the options available. Dr. Heino has also provided specialist referrals when my dogs have needed care beyond what his clinic can provide. It's a welcome change to take my dogs to the vet when they love seeing Dr. Heino. My dogs deserve only the best care and they get it (for a reasonable price to boot) at Rainier Vet Hospital!

Read Less

Read Less

I recently had to have my fifteen year old cat euthanized due to continuing renal failure. It was a very difficult time for me as I live alone and the cat and I were ""best friends."" Dr. Heino gave me options, explained what would happen after I chose what I wanted and reassured me with the fact that, under the circumstances, I was being very unselfish. He gave me as much time as I wanted. I had lived in Seattle twenty-three years ago and had brought in another cat for services. As soon as I saw the doctor I remembered him. What a testimony to his dedication that he was still there giving his excelent care to so many animals through the years.

He always takes time to very carefully let you know what is going on with your pet and will return your phone calls if he thinks he can serve you by phone. His prices are fair and on the low side and his is a drop-in clinic. Dr. Heino is an exceptional vet and teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone with a pet. Read Less

Read Less

Took our dog here because he was having some discomfort from a previous knee surgery done two years ago by another vet. Dr. Heino's associate vet spent a lot of hands on time with our before making her diagonosis that the knee was stable and did not recommend expensive procedures or x-rays. She perscribed an anti-inflamitory told us a list of things we could do to ease any future discomfort he might have. In addition: Good parking. Very short wait to see the vet. Easy to get to from Montlake, Capitol Hill, Seward Park areas etc. Least we have paid for any vet visit in the city and our dog got booster shots, the knee check up and the anti-inflamitory. Dr.Heino will patiently explain the condition of your pet and all your options so that everything is understandable. He does not try to weigh-in on your perhaps life-and-death decision, but gives a realistic, humane view of the situation.
