Well, first off, of course it's expensive and they don't want to do the work if you can't pay. That's pretty standard for any vet clinic or regular doctor if you don't have insurance, I ended up taking my cat to another clinic that charged $100 more.
I didn't go to another clinic because of the price, but because of VCA's operating procedure. I felt more like I was in a car dealership than a vet clinic. When I arrived, they immediately took my cat, box and all, to a back room. After I waited around for a while, they took me to a room where a vet and a vet tech came in separately to talk to me, with long waits in between. At one point, one of them went back to consult with another, and it was strikingly similar to the "I have to clear this with the sales manager" that you get at the car dealership.
At the next clinic, they sent me and the cat to an exam room, and the doctor came in and examined the cat in my presence, explaining what he was doing and putting both me and the cat at ease. This doc gave me a list of suggested tests and treatments and told me which were urgent and which were nice to have. The cat had to stay, and the doc said he'd call later and invited me to come visit my cat as he was getting better.
I don't doubt the vets at VCA are competent and that their prices are comparable to those at other clinics, but they could certainly learn something about dealing with anxious pet owners and their dear babies. Read Less
