We had been using Sumner Vet for close to ten years without much issue. Our dogs were healthy, we got in and out without much hassle. That's all changed in the last year and we've decided to take the care of our animals elsewhere. We have heard there are new owners in the past year, so maybe that explains the changes. We didn't take our move lightly and the experience below is just one that led us to try something different. I've left it at two stars for the many years of wonderful service. It would easily be a single star based on the past year or so. This is mostly based on an experience where we sat in a waiting room for multiple hours without anything happening. The room was cold, somewhat dirty compared to other rooms we've been in, in the past. Our dog had a nasty cough (she's 12 years old) and we were worried about collapsed trachea, among other things. All being said, we had a $400+ bill and zero answers. They did send xrays to a specialist and they didn't seem concerned about a collapsed trachea. Regardless, hours in a cold exam room and a crazy bill that literally gave no answers. We called back to complain about it, mostly about being left in the room for hours. We understand staff needs to be paid and lights need to turn on, but leaving us alone like that was a little frustrating. They offered to have our pup come back for a check-up, free of charge. So we go back, still no answers, etc. There are other little things that are tough to remember as my girlfriend and I have taken our pups in separately. But the bottom line is, the prices have gone up and the customer care has gone down. I'm not surprised to see many other reviews with similar issues and frustrations. We will not be taking our animals back here unless there is an emergency. Our new vet has been great, prices are a little better and they're even closer to us in Puyallup. Read Less

They are a 24 hour animal hospital, and the only one in the area. That's about the only good thing they have going for them. My dog was unable to walk and was defecating herself. We brought here here on a Saturday about 7pm. It was about an hour before they got her in to see the vet, a few hours before they called us into an exam room to talk about things, and several more hours before the had completed the exams. All in all, we were there for 9 1/2 hours and had a bill of just under $1000 all for them to give her some anti-inflammatory pills and some mild pain killers. They had us sitting in an exam room for several hours without any contact which was boring and frustrating as we had no idea what was going on. Prices for services were never discussed, and we felt sort of forced into a few of the things we agreed to. The vet initially seemed like he cared, but when I started to question why we needed more and more services, we never saw him again, and they finally hurried us out. It was as if they figured they could not get more money out of us, so they didn't need us there anymore. During the visit, a lady had come in saying she had a 200 pound rottweiler in her truck that had been hit by a car. They told her to go wait by her car and they would come with a gurney to get the dog. She came in about an hour later asking in they were coming, and they said they were on the way. Finally probably another 45 minutes later, they went out to help. If there were ANY other close by options for immediate vet assistance, I would take it in a heartbeat. These people only seem to care about the money you can provide and not really about what is good for the animal. Two weeks after our "visit", I needed to get hold of the pharmacy to refill my dogs prescriptions. I have left 2 messages as nobody ever answers the phone, but have yet to receive a reply. I work a weird shift which is why I was trying to go here, but apparently I will need to take time to go somewhere else and see what they can do. Edit: Got a call the other day asking us when we would be back for a checkup on our dog that they didn't do much for in the first place, and that died shortly after the visit here. Seriously, this place is just after your money and are apparently trying to drum up business now. They didn't return phone calls when I needed prescription refills, but now they want my business... this place sucks. Read Less

I am very grateful for the young ER Vet that supported me on the absolute worst day of my life on Sunday, January 7th. My precious boy had some type of mass in his belly that burst sometime in the early morning hours. I discovered him, half conscientious laying next to my couch, likely trying to get outside one last time. I rushed him to Sumner Veterinary, where sadly the best decision was to have him cross the Rainbow Bridge. The Bet was so sweet and compassionate. It meant the world to me that this total stranger showed my little boy so much companion and as so gentle with him in those last moments of his life. My girls are due to see the Vet, and without a doubt Sumner will be getting my business. Read Less

The other complaint i would have is you have about a 50/50 chance of getting a tech with a chip on her shoulder. This has been our experience for about the past year with both our dogs. Had the worst experience! We boarded our dogs here from wed-fri and packed them a lot food just to be safe. Of course while we were gone they lost their appetite and didn't eat much which we figured would happen so when I called on Wednesday night and asked them to put chicken on their food the employee told me they would. Thursday rolls around and when I called they hadn't put chicken on the food yet so the dogs were still not eating and she asked me if I would like them to put chicken on it and I said yes. Fast forward to today when we go to pick them up and the Employee told us that their blankets are in the wash and they will have to call us later to come pick those up even though we didn't tell them to wash them and they didn't ask us beforehand. I'm assuming they just took it upon themselves to wash them because the dogs probably peed on them (which they never ever do except for when they are there). When we got home I noticed none of their food was leftover in their bag and we gave them a lot of food way more than enough so I called them and asked where it was and the employee told me they put water in it to make it more enticing to the dogs. Not once did an employee call and ask if they could do that and no one let us know that was something they even do which also leads me to believe they never actually put the chicken on it. The food we buy our dogs is really expensive and they wasted about half a bag of food. We will NEVER be taking our dogs back there.Read Less

My dog sustained a small cut when I was trying to cut his hair. So I take him there at 8:40 PM and no one is in the lobby except for me, my sister, my cousin and the nurses. We don't get seen by a doctor until 9:30. I tell them I just want them to clean the cut. She then gives her exam and tell me I should get X-rays and medication and she'll be back with an estimate of how much it costs. She makes us wait for 30 minutes to get estimates which total 750 dollars. I tell her I can't do that I just want her to clean and fix the cut. She then tells me to fix the cut will be 48 dollars, a cone will be 10 dollars and the medication will be 100 dollars, which should total 158 dollars, a price I was fine with. She then tells me the total for all of that is 260 dollars. Now I think i'm pretty good at math so 48 + 10+ 100=158. So tell me where she pulled an extra 102 dollars from? Don't send pets you care for here. They gave our dog wrong dose of medicine and wouldn't even call and update on dogs condition! Full Story: We went to get our two silky terriers updated rabies vaccines, and because one of the terriers has a hard time with vaccines they decided to give a dose of benadryl before giving her the vaccine. They then come out to inform us that they gave the 12lb dog twice the amount, 1.9 instead or 0.9, and would have to monitor and care for her closely in case she she she has a severe reaction. They initially said that my grandma could stay 3-4 hours until she improves and shows to be stable to go home, my grandma would have stayed by her dog the entire time except she cant see in the dark to drive and would be stranded there all night unable to get home. She was distressed and didn't call me until on her way... On her way home I then call and tell the clinic that her family will drive her back and that we will stay and then take her dog home when its safe. The veterinarian gets on the phone with me and tells me they don't want the dog to leave until 8 am now with NO explanation and says we'll have to come in the morning. I explain that this is an older (though healthy) dog who has never stayed overnight in circumstances like this and how distressing it is for owner to not know how she's doing in a strange environment crated while going through something like that, and I then requested phone calls to update us so we know if she is improving. They tell us that the overnight doctor will call before 10, but they didn't my grandma had to call around 10:30. They then say they'll call at 6 am with an update and they still didn't call, owner had to call them and the staff has the audacity after their medical error to tell my grandma "they're very busy". It was horrible enough to give the wrong dosage to a dog, causing who knows what harm, and potential for severe repercussions, but to not follow through with the promised phone calls to a worried owner and lack of communication is shocking to me! We picked the dog up with bruises from IV's and no communication from the original Vet, who I guess didn't want to face us. Read Less

I am sorry am I buying a car or trying to care for my animal? Our dog had emergency surgery last night at another location but was transferred to Sumner for overnight observation. After waiting in the "private" room for 20 minutes the Dr. finally came in only to present us with a post op bill that cost more then what the initial EMERGENCY surgery did! We asked for an overnight quote only which ended being still almost as much as the surgery but what are we to do when they are the only ones in town and our dog needs post op care. Dr. then continued to tell us all the things that could go wrong...I understand things can happen but go easy on people that are obviously in shock over the day that they had already! To top it off, the Dr says we need to place a deposit..ok great...we are thinking maybe half? NO! They want the entire amount of their "LOW" end estimate! Will never use this est. again...will drive all the way to Tacoma if I have to! I had been told in the past that money talks here and that was made abundantly clear last night. Guess monopoly wins, thankfully we moved our dog back to the other hospital for observation today and she is doing great thanks to them. Read Less

This review is not specific to Dr Louisa Beal, but instead about Sumner Vet. Do you want to be ripped off? Go to Sumner Vet. I have been a customer for 10+ years because of convenient location, nice staff and good care, but have had enough. They take advantage of customers and are dishonest in their calls about updating on cost. No matter what you sign or what they call to update, you will hit the higher cost. And they will call mutiple family members with costs and not explain it is additional on top of other costs. Since Sumner Vet moved to the new larger facility their business mission seems to be ""charge the customer as much as possible!"" or ""never charge under max quote - if you're under....add things to the bill!"" We have had 6 dogs through this vet and received multiple un-necessary recommendations to for procedures and surgeries since they moved. What inspires me to actually make a comment now is their dis-honesty in a recent emergency situation. While I cannot complain about the care becasue the vets and staff are nice and seem competent, I truly believe that Sumner Vet is a money pit and they will take advantage of customers financially if they can.

Read Less

Please beware. Read Less
