Dr. DeCent is by far the best veterinarian I have ever met! I brought my dog in for a routine exam and shots. He sat on the floor with my dog during the visit, petting him and gently checking him over. He even covered my dog's ears to tell me that he needed to lose 5-10lbs! ����Then, because he knows how expensive the shots are, the exam was free! FREE!! That's unheard of in the veterinary field! He really wants the best care for the pets without having to break the bank of the owners! I just think he's amazing and I send everyone I know to see him! Dr. DeCent is one of the best! If you are looking for a vet that actually practices original vet medicine and not the new age (order everything under the sun just to make some extra $$) this is your guy. Dr. Ray and staff were excellent, compassionate, and caring when it was time to euthanize my senior dogs. They did not question my judgment that it was time or try to make me feel bad or that I should have done more. They were respectful and did everything possible to make an incredibly difficult decision as stress-free as possible. We were able to stay with both dogs throughout the entire process - hold and talk to them, let them know they were loved. Dr. Ray explained the procedure so we knew what would happen, and afterward, he and his staff let us spend as much time as we needed to say our goodbyes. Despite this being one of the worst days of our lives, we can only thank them for being so gentle and solicitous of our dogs and us. The cost was also very reasonable, unlike many other area vets. I had gone to Custer rd vet for 6 yrs and loved his fair prices and what I thought was knowledge but as the years went by he got busier and busier and I took my 14 yr old cat into him because she kept randomly howling in pain he gave her a steroid shit and sent us on our way saying and I quote "you have a good six years with her" a week and a half later she died. Come to find out she had hypo thyroid and if he had just eared on the safe side and done the testing would have been able to save her. So now I'm without my best friend thanks to him. Dr. Ray is knowledgeable and compassionate. He doesn't over-prescribe and he doesn't over-charge like some of the big and fancy VCA clinics, and he has always provided excellent care for our three cats. We tried five other vet clinics when we moved to this area before we found Dr. Ray. One of our cats loves Dr. Ray so much that he has a fit if the other two need to be seen and he doesn't, so we have to take him in anyway. We've never had a cat that loved the vet before! Read Less

This clinic is amazing.My dog fell down the steep stairs at our apartment and ended up with a compound fracture in his upper rear leg, the break was so bad the the bones popped out of his leg in 2 places, he was only 10 months old...The Animal Emergency Clinic on Durango St. in Tacoma wanted $4,000 for the surgery + $250/day to board him for a few days because of the open wound. The vet was curt and rude and told us we could either sign him over to them or just put him down since we couldn't afford it. As I sobbed in the lobby and we called family to ask for a loan, the secretary felt bad for us and gave us a couple other vets to call. The vet then threatened to keep him because I wanted to remove an open wounded animal from their care and I demanded my dog back (he was not bleeding, stable, and fine to take home for the time being). The emergency clinic is awful. We called Custer Road and they said to bring him in that evening (it was about 2:30, appt. was set for 5:00)Dr. Ray looked at him, checked the x-rays from the emergency clinic and got "the book" where he showed us the example of the break and all of the repair/surgical options and helped us choose the best one for our dog's best chance at healing. He did the surgery for $1,000 ($3,000 LESS than the emergency clinic and one other vet we called) AND we got the military discount.And, we discovered our dog is EXTREMELY resilient to doggie downers and managed to get out of his cone while I was grocery shopping and ripped the bar that held his bone in place out of his leg. I called them in panic and they stayed well past closing to wait for me to get there (aboit 20min after closing) check the bone, clean it up, bandage him and they didn't charge me a penny for that! Also, the 3 check ups after surgery were at no cost and when it seemed like the injury may not heal right due to my dog messing with it, he offered to repair it in another way for only the cost of the anesthetic. This clinic is AMAZING. Dr. Ray is a wonderful person, his vet techs are fantastic. Oh and bonus? They only charged $20 a day to board our dog the 2 days before surgery and the 3 days after to monitor him closely. We continue to use them as our vet and I never want to take my pets anywhere else. You could not find a more caring, compassionate vet who honestly puts the pets before the money. Read Less

Dr. ray Decent and his staffs are very friendly. I would highly recommend them for minor wellness exams and treatments. But if your pet needs surgical or dental treatment, BEWARE!. My dog came home and died of severe dehydration for dental cleaning. Knowing that you can't give food and water before, while waiting(7 hours) , and after the procedure, my dog was not given I.V fluid during the procedure which is standard in other vet clinics.I took him to another emergency vet clinic,his veins had collapsed because of dehydration. I got to the are because of the military. I had two dogs when I first moved to Steilacoom and my pet sitter recommended this vet. I feel in love with the Dr. and his staff. So careful and throughout with out unnecessary tests. They also have the best prices of the area (I leave in Lacey now and they are still cheaper and better). I got married and I my husband had a cat that was sick. I took them to many Vets closer to our house ( we lived in Yelm) an no one could figure out what the cat had. So I too him to Custer and guess what the cat is perfectly fine now recovering from a condition that would have killed him and that Dr. DeCent diagnosed the first time he had ever seen our cat. Now I have a new puppy and he goes to Custer as well. I have a 40 min drive to his clinic but trust me when I tell you that it is well worth it, knowing that my pets get quality and thoughtful care, and to top it off, inexpensive. We have been going to Custer Road Vet Clinic since Ray took over and we couldn't be happier with the service we recieve there. They offer military discounts, and treat our pets as if they were their own. You can tell they care a great deal about the pets and their clients. With all of our dogs, Ray has gotten right down on the floor with them especially the big baby I have right now who weighs nearly 100 pounds and tries to climb on my lap and hide he's so afraid. The prices are very high. They charge you even if you dont see the Doctors. They use expensive equipment that is so unneeded and charge you an arm and a leg for it. I stopped going here and drove a bit further to Lakewood veterinary hospital. they are so much nicer, cheaper and they care a great deal for your pets. I even seen the doctor shed a tear after they had to put an animal down after it was hurt in a car accident. it was sad and they really seemed to care.I will never go back to Custer. they are almost as bad as banfield.
