I was taking my dog here for standard care then for her spay. The vet called me after she was spayed and told me she was doing well then also shared that the E collar needed to stay on for 10-14 days. I picked my dog up the next day and I had taken the next five days off to make sure she healed correctly. When I picked her up they provided care instructions that stated the sutures were dissolvable and there was no mention of any follow up appointment needed. The spay was dec 6 and now on dec 27 the sutures became infected so I brought her in and they go oh that's good you brought her in because the stitches aren't dissolvable so that may be why they're getting infected. My dog was in her crate with an inflatable collar because the E collar doesn't fit in her crate and I think it's safer for my dog to be in a crate in the car but they then proceeded to use that against me stating that they can't say if the sutures were infected due to her licking them because she wasn't wearing the E collar (which was taken off at 14 days like they stated I could do), or from them being in too long. The E collar has been off over a week so clearly it wasn't from her licking them. Dr Petersen was rude and took no responsibility and placed blame on me when I stated I was unhappy and very upset that my dog was in pain (not eating all day) and had to take more meds which I don't prefer she do and I paid even more money after the hundreds spent for the spay. I would pay for the world for my dog but I don't think I need to pay for the error of the vet. This vet is more expensive than other vets but I thought the care was well worth paying for but I was clearly mistaken. Why would someone who cares enough for their dog to take time off while she heals not bring her back to remove stitches? They were prob more annoying to me than to my dog. I was checking them daily to make sure they weren't infected yet I'm being blamed for something that falls on them. I left my number for the office manager to call me so I guess we will see if he does so tomorrow and will update my review if they're able to find a way to correct their wrong doing like any reputable business would do.
Update 1: The Manager is just about as rude as the vet was. It took two calls to get him on the phone since he chose to respond to my first call by email. He then proceeded to lie when I stated it was unprofessional and said he did call but stated in his email that although he hadn't immediately replied, he wasn't ignoring me and wanted to know what I wanted so he knew how to proceed with the owners. Yes I am upset but I wasn't cussing or anything. I was stating why I was upset and all's he had to say was I can't help you and nothing I say will do anything so I will let the owners know. You would think the manager would at least listen for one and also try to keep something from escalating to the owners but apparently not so now I'm waiting for a call from the owner's.
Update 2: I've chosen to get my dog's records and cut my losses. I can't imagine the owners will react much differently than the staff since typically staff are a direct reflection of them. I don't have the time or energy to go in circles with people who find a simple apology just too hard. This wasn't about money but more about someone apologizing that my dog was in pain and now being sedated again due to their error but that was just too much for their pride apparently. I will find another vet that will ensure my dog has the best care.
The owners never once tried calling me whenI was told they'd be in so as I suspected they must condone the behavior and awful customer service shown by the manager and vet. I've also received no confirmation to if my dogs records are being mailed or not so I guess we will see if they show up in the mail this week Read Less

As a client of Deschutes Animal Clinic for 38 years, I can't say enough positive things about this Practice. Dr. Balius has always been there for my animals. I'm involved in Dog Rescue so I have the biggest file there. Dr. Peterson who just arrived at Deschutes recently took care of my cat, Sherman. She was pleasant and very thorough on everything that he was going through. I recently lost my little chihuahua Riley, and Dr. Ripka was so kind when I was obviously losing my mind. I recommend this place to everyone needing a vet. From the minute you enter the door to the awesome receptionist's, to following up with the doctors, I give them a A+!

Thank you Deschutes, from me and all my furry kids! Read Less

The spay was decRead Less

Took my dog in 2 months ago.. after xrays and lab work, they told me he was constipated.
Sent us home with some pain meds.
Now 2 months later my dog is very ill and seemed constipated again.. took him into an emergency vet who examined him and found a large tumor in his pelvic region.
The emergency vet said that there is no way this tumor grew this large in two months. .. how did deschutes clinic miss it?
Seriously having to put my dog to rest today... And feeling like my dog would if had a better fighting chance if the tumor had been caught when the first X-ray's were done. I'm devastated. Losing my best friend and most amazing dog ever today. Read Less

Dr. Ripka at Deschutes Animal Clinic, is awesome. My Shih Tsu " Kimo" swallowed a small fish bone 7 days ago and even after xrays and tests, was not eating or drinking. But he kept yelping whenever we touched his neck. Dr. Ripka has a great bedside manner and wrote up a detailed report referring me to Olympia Vet Specialist , Dr. Green who used a tiny camera to detect a small bone lodged in his throat. Kimo is going to be fine....thanks to these (2) wonderful caring Veterinarians. Merry Christmas.... Read Less

This has been the WORST experience with a vet in my life! This place does not have any compation for the animals they care for. They make stuff up so they can charge you an arm and a leg in vet bills. They seem to never have there stories straight. I brought in my pet for a well dog check. He got his shots and they took the time to explain a lot of things I did not know. Less than a week later and my pal had a ear infection...and they got him in within an hour of calling and leaving a message. Professional, kind people that truly love animals. I came here on the recommendation of a family member and I am very happy. Another point; I sat in the lobby and watched the animals come in and leave. They all seemed happy and excited to be there; I have been to other clinics where the animals are almost in a panic. That tells me that what goes on behind the scenes is just as impressive as what goes on out front. Thank you! Read Less

My dog has received great care here. She had surgery for a birth defect (entropion of both eyelids) and Dr. Balius did a beautiful job. The office is clean, and the employees are courteous and helpful. I think the fees are pretty standard, though it's nice that they offer a 5% discount if you pay with debit or cash. I was recommended here from a friend who took his dog there after she was hit by a car in the middle of the night and received spectacular care, saving the dog's life. I have since found out that someone I work with has gone to Dr. Balius for years and has nothing but good things to say. I will most likely use this service as long as I live in the area. Read Less
