The clinic is always extremely clean and odor-free. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgable. We particularly love Dr. Morrow. She is patient and gentle with our very nervous dog. I've been going to University Place vet for over 2 years now with both of my cats. All of the staff is really friendly and caring. Their facility isn't the most state-of-the-art, but it gets the job done and they have an efficient system in place for when your pet needs a procedure that they cannot provide. They have a small waiting room with a few cute amenities (a keurig, candies, snacks) and they clearly make an effort to upkeep the place and make it look as nice as possible. I live across town now, but I still drive the extra 5 minutes to go to UP vet! It's a convenient location within UP and they do have a decent sized parking lot. This is the best veterinary hospital I've ever taken my dog to. Dr. Paulette is a wonderful veterinarian and it is absolutely clear to me that they care most about your pet and secondly about your wallet. I have always felt that they were fair in pricing and they do a great job of helping you explore cheaper options before going on pricier endeavors. Recently my dog became very sick and they were quick to refer me to a local emergency vet. I cannot say how nice it is to be able to trust a veterinarian as much as Fenway and I trust Dr. Paulette. Our lab mix is almost 5 years old and she's our entire world. We have been fortunate enough that she's only had to go to the vet for vaccinations, one UTI and once for vomiting. We tried two different places but we were not impressed nor satisfied. The one time she was vomiting, they did hundreds of dollars in testing, couldn't figure out what's wrong and still wanted us to continue testing! What a scam. We get her vaccinations at Banfield due to convenience. Two days ago, Blondie developed an open sore on her neck that was pus-filled and bleeding. I called Banfield first because I wanted to keep it simple with her records. They couldn't get her in that day and didn't even care to offer any solutions. I researched and found a place two miles from home with stellar reviews. The receptionist was friendly, understood the urgency of the situation and got us in within an hour. The facility is inviting. Usually we have to drag her inside, but nope she walked right in. Dr. Paulette was genuine and caring. She was honest and gave a reasonable estimate saying she included worst case scenario pricing. She didn't try to sell us anything we didn't need. The procedure couldn't be done the first day so my husband brought Blondie back the next day for her sedation and treatment and he said Dr. Morrow was also very nice. Thank Goodness it wasn't anything serious and the bill was on the lower end of the spectrum. When does that ever happen? I feel most vets know pet parents would do anything for their pets and take advantage of that. We never felt that pressure here. Thank you so much for taking care of our girl. Wonderful veterinary clinic with friendly and professional staff. Took my kitten to get neutered. I received a call after he came out of the surgery and was able to pick him up same day. Have had zero issues post surgery and received a wonderful thank you card in the mail signed by everyone at the office. My indoor cat Jimmy unfortunately got outside and sufferered from a terrible accident. We almost had to amputate his legs and even consider euthanasia as an option. The whole team at this vet hospital worked so hard every day to make sure my Jimmy would make it out okay. Dr. Paulette was the most amazing doctor that helped me through this crazy process since day 1. We did tie over bandages and multiple surgeries and they even let him stay over night to give him the extra attention and care he needed since i work in Seattle. They worked with  me financially and helped me get grants from the humane society so this broke college girl that lives on her own can pay to give my cat a chance. I now take all 3 my cats here for there annual check ups because I would never let my cats be in the hands of any other doctors and staff who treat them like they are their own. Highly highly recommend and would give 10 stars if I could for saving my baby and giving me constantly the best care. Love this place. Read Less

Only veterinary hospital I recommend to family, friends, and customers at my animal related work place. I'm a regular & have an injury prone cat that has had everything from FHO surgery, to life threatening head trauma. I really do like the staff here. They have always been friendly and professional throughout the years. But this last visit was the clincher. Our 12 year old cattle dog Homer needed surgery, X-rays, antibiotics, pain meds, 1/2 day hospitalization, and other things which can all add up $$$ pretty quickly. Prior to the surgery, it was estimated the costs would be anywhere between $800.00 - $1,200.00. They really didn't know what they were working with until surgery was underway. In the end, however, Homer's situation wasn't as bad as they had feared and the final cost was much, much less than we originally thought. We only paid in the ballpark of $550.00. I've been taking my two cockatiels to Dr. Shafar for a year now. When I first arrived in the area, I started calling around to find an avian vet and time and time again I was referred to Dr. Shafar. One vet said, "They don't get any better than Dr. Shafar." She is very analytical and highly detailed and she takes the times to get to the bottom of problems. She doesn't just trim your bird's feathers without asking you what you are trying to accomplish with the trim and will explain which feathers affect lift and flight. If she does a trim and you test flight your bird and it can still get higher and farther than you want, go back the next day and she will trim again for free.  She's been treating one of my birds for feather cysts and after the surgery, she shows me everything and explains it, even draws a diagram! I won't go to anyone else now for the care of my birds. I wish she also treated dogs! Read Less

First and foremost, UP Veterinary Hospital is prescribing Trifexis without testing dogs for heartworm.  This is a quote from the Trifexis website "Prior to adminstration of Trifexis dogs SHOULD be tested for existing heartworm".  There is no excuse for not following the manufacturer's directions.  I have contacted various veterinarians who indicate they WILL NOT prescribe Trifexis without testing for heartworm.  Trifexis does not kill heartworms if they are already present.  After 3 months of continuous problems with UP Veterinary Hospital I was very comfortable going elsewhere for my pets veterinary needs.I have contacted Trifexis and I now know that Trifexis will replace any dosage that is vomited up by my dog.  I called UP Vet when my Schipperke vomited her Trifexis and was not offered a replacement dosage.  When I went to Banfield and switched to Comfortis the vet informed me that if my dog vomited her medication it would be replaced at no cost to me.I also made a complaint to Washington State Department of Health but unfortunately they felt my complaint about this veterinary hospital didn't warrant their attention.  I have contacted Trifexis and hopefully they will follow through with contacting UP Vet and educating them on free dosage replacement and testing for heartworm.Makes one wonder about UP Veterinary Hospital when they don't follow manufacturer's recommendations what else do they do ??? I have been taking my African Grey Charlemagne there for several years. Dr. Shafar specializes in exotic birds, well really all birds. Dr. Shafar is phenomenal. I do not think I would trust my beautiful boy to anyone else. I just took him in today for a wing and nail trim, and she spent so much extra time providing education about being a parrot owner. She is truly gently with him and very caring. The front desk staff are always helpful and efficient. Great place for bird owners! Read Less

I called and was able to bring Max in the same day. I, like another poster was worried about the cost because Max had a suspicious bump on his back. From the moment I walked in I was treated respectfully and Max was treated like royalty. The staff was very upfront about the cost of service and I had to sign a release prior to treatment. Sorry folks, but it cost money to run a business and vet school isn't cheap. In my opinion if the front office isn't run as well as the back we miss out on the services of good people. All in all the charges were very affordable, below the estimate and staff did not try and hawk their preferred brand of dog food or treats. How often does that happen? Max had his bump examined, a complete physical to include his teeth and we were in and out in about an hour. While I was in the exam room I over heard the staff talking about the best way to break it to another "parent" that their pet was terminal. In that conversation the staff gained my complete respect because what they had in mind was the pet and their owner. No mention of the bill was ever made. I didn't give five stars because Max has only been one time. If/when it's time for Max to go back this is the clinic I will be taking him to.Read Less

This hospital is excellent. I have a dog that needed emergency care. Not only did they drop everything to help my sick dog but they had a payment plan that I could apply for to take care of any remaining balance that I didn't have cash for. I was able to get HIGH-QUALITY care without worrying about immediate payment. Options like this can make a huge differences in emergency situations. Sometimes you don't know if your vet can handle urgent care until it's in their face. And I can proudly say they stepped up to the plate and exceeded all my expectations.
