It was years ago, but I really feel I need to share these experiences.
I took my cat Milo for an emergency visit. They told me it was probably some kind of infection and prescribed antibiotics. I didn't want a guess so
I took my severely ill cat to the Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic and after exam and consideration of my idea (that perhaps there was a bug inside him) they did exploratory surgery, found infect larvae in my cat's head, and said he would have died if I had listened to the Delavan vet.
This was not a huge surprise to me because my previous experience with Delavan Animal Clinic caused my other cat's death. (I'm not sure why I even tried Delavan first honestly)
This is that experience:
My cat Romeo, after being lost for days, came crawling home with a broken leg. He was an otherwise healthy, amazing 3 year old boy. I took him here and the vet put him in a cast, said he would need xrays once a week for 6 weeks.
Well, apparently, they could not keep him still enough and were afraid of being bitten (which I now know is ridiculous after working at another vet, there ARE muzzles for cats) so the vet said he would NEED anesthesia every week for 6 weeks, to do the xrays. (did not even suggest any kind of relaxing medication first)
He did not explain the risks of this and I was unfortunately too dumb and trusting at the time to question it.
During these 6 weeks my cat was also shaved, due to some matting. Well, since then I've done professional grooming and am very upset that the groomer there did not even mention that Romeo could be put in a muzzle and those few mats could be combed out, no shaving needed. Instead he was shaved and they insisted on anesthesia to do it, which is NOT necessary, but the vet acted like those 7 doses of anesthesia over 6 weeks was totally safe.
At the beginning, I DID say I did not want the older vet there working on my cat, he was in his 80s and I didn't trust him to not make a mistake.
Well I found out later on, after by chance working with a vet tech that worked there, that the older vet often gave too much anesthesia and made mistakes.
And as it turned out, on my cat's the last visit, the old vet, would I DID NOT want, took care of my cat.
My cat came home from his very last appointment and over the next 5 hours suffered from increasing breathing difficulty, and died before I could take him to the emergency hospital,(who would not see him anyway unless they had at least 3k up front)
Romeo died the most EXCRUCIATING death from heart failure over the course of hours. It was like he was drowning. I cannot tell you how devastating that was for me and my family. I should have sued the place honestly, but I was too depressed to do anything. I STILL for horrible about it all, years later. I wish I had never taken him there to begin with.
PLEASE PLEASE always ask for the risks and do your research to verify. I know the vets responsible ARE still practicing there so be careful if you do use this place.
Anesthesia is NOT something to be taken lightly and for things like xrays and grooming, it does NOT need to be given. After working in a vet clinic doing grooming, and working with some extremely nervous and aggressive animals, I can tell you FOR SURE that what you need is competent employees, proper tools and natural tranquilizers, not anesthesia.
