I have gone to several of the vets here in the past 3 years. Dr. Kay was a wonderful surgeon when my cat needed a full mouth extraction, and even called me from the procedure to check in about what I thought was best after they did more x-rays. Dr. Hospel had been a thorough and compassionate primary vet for both of my cats over the years, and I would recommend her without reservation. When one of my cats got very sick, they recommended a wonderful emergency practice with 24h specialty care available, and even called ahead for me and faxed his records while I was on my way there. When he finally died of cancer, they sent a personal card to my home with messages from every vet and vet tech who remembered him - it's been almost two years, and I still have the card as a keepsake. When I first moved to Madison, they sought out my old vet before our first appointment to get records, and now that I'm moving away they made sure to provide me with a photocopy of their records to take to my next vet. By far the best vet practice I've gone to and I'd recommend them to anyone. Read Less

Not the best customer service by the vet techs. They seem uninterested in the pets sometimes. I don't remember the vet's names since I always get a different one when booking an appt. But one of the guy vets was great but overall the staff makes me not want to come back due to the unprofessionalism I've experienced with several vet techs. This place overcharges on vaccines and appts. I'm switching to Hillshore on University Ave. Staff seems to be more friendly and understanding and willing to explain more and not leave you to figure stuff out + they are much more affordable and have boarding and grooming. Can't beat that! Oh and if you have an overweight pet good luck in them to trying to help you. They'll just end up criticizing you and telling your dog or cat "you're on the road to diabetes buddy" by one of their vet techs. Not much help from vet techs. Telling you your dog should lose the weight back to the weight he was when he was 8-12 months old! Come on a large dog at 1 year old or less is not full grown, especially a mix! She didn't even mention the Purina weight system which the Hillshore vet tech recommended! DON'T COME HERE. Service will be 75% terrible. Look somewhere else. UPDATE___9/11/2015--- WOW I just read how unprofessional this vet's comments in response to my review  are. My God what is this man's problem-- he just made his own business look bad-- He keeps saying that I did not get expired medicine. I sure as hell did and again why does he allow kittens to be stored in his waiting room around cats being BROUGHT IN WHO ARE SICK!!----- No one does this no one. I am  a military brat and we have lived in many states no VETS OFFICE EVER STORES KITTENS NEAR ADULT SICK ANIMALS they have a separate room for that . Worms alone could be given to the new kttens. When I asked about one of the kittens the woman at the desk says "OH WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE HEALTH OF THEM" what an odd thing to say upfront and so gruff as if she had problems with people complaining about this. And he accused me of getting some sort of credit from my current vet? This attitude they have of they are helping the poor somehow is actually insulting.Where are they getting this from? That reasoning is what led them to offering me the expired meds. They supposedly help the humane society if those meds are fine then use them there on animals that need them.He is asking why I am doing this many years later MY CAT WAS SCREAMING in terror I still hear him screaming :(  That cat was the most amazing cat I ever owned.  I also had vet records from previous vets sent to them ( previous vet could not understand why my cat was getting so heavy--they never checked his thyroid either) - I took my cat to the vet always.- My cat had MOUTH CANCER AND THYROID ISSUES YOU NEVER FOUND THE MOUTH CANCER YOU COULD NOT EVEN DIAGNOSE THE SWOLLEN THYROID --   Check every cat for thyroid that walks in the door so many of them have it save yourself some work. When you give thyroid meds do it twice a day not just once.. Once a day is NOT EFFECTIVE I was told later.                                                                                               Original review               I had a really bad experience here . They misdiagnosed my cat saying his thyroid was fine even though he had a huge lump in his throat ( later oops it was thyroid). My cat ended up dying and during this long process they offered me EXPIRED meds. Now I read a review on White Pages and a person said this. When I read her review I thought she was a nutcase. The owner told her this did not happen well now I believe her because it happened to me. The worst part was this vet tech they had that held my cat down so hard he was screaming like he had been hit by a car. She never offered to let me help and calm him she was brutal. They were trying to get blood from him and later another vet said he had a mouth tumor that was huge ( they also missed this at Companion) so no wonder he as screaming. I still remember his screams every time I have to drive past this place. I realize cats die what I am upset with is the poor medical treatment and Dr Kay was nice and friendly but that did not help my cat. The other vet Mia Hospel was useless. They seem very worried about folks complaining to them they look at you as if you are a horrible person to question them. They should put that energy into actually improving their practice. I really wonder why they had small kittens being adopted who are  playing with cats who are sick being brought in?A really good vet is hard to find but since then I have found an awesome one. Companion Animal Hospital is a lifesaver that genuinely cares about  your pet. I wish I had written this review sooner, as the services my cat received had taken place almost 3 years ago when I was still living in Madison. Dr. Kay was totally understanding, knowledgeable, and truly concerned about my cat's well-being. I had never been there before, so my cat's first exam was free, which was an awesome value. When something frightening was discovered at the exam, Dr. Kay gave me a complete run-down on everything it could possibly be and also outlined the next steps to take. Two moderately-priced surgeries and a pain-management regimen later, my cat was back to being healthy and playful! Read Less

::Update as of 8/7/2015::This is insane. You're updating your comment about evidence you don't have because some one else had a negative experience? Thanks for bringing up this traumatic event once again for absolutely no reason. Thanks for continuing to solidify my hatred of you and your business.::UPDATE::I have contacted the emergency vet and the owner, or anyone else, of Companion Animal Hospital has ever called them, despite what they say. It is also illegal in the state of Wisconsin to disclose information to a third party without the owner's consent. Which was very obviously not given.Original post:I hate this place more than I could ever possibly express. Their incompetence lead to my cat almost dying. I brought my cat in here TWICE and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. I paid for expensive tests and still nothing. I broke down one morning after my cat was peeing blood and took him to a local emergency hospital in a panic because I was terrified for my cat's life. They immediately diagnosed what my cat's problem was and proceeded to help him. They said if I had waited more than 12-ish hours to get him in, my cat would have died. If I could wish any business out of existence, it would be this place. They may be cheap and friendly, but they have no idea what they're doing. Please don't ever put your cat's well being in their hands. In response to the owner: First, I'm the co-owner of the cat. The cat originally belonged to my boyfriend and now he is both of our's. Said ownership has even been registered with the city of Madison. Trying to discredit me by saying that my cat isn't my cat, is a terrible thing to do.Secondly, I have the paperwork stating that there was blood found in his urine when he was brought in. Which I'm sure the emergency vet would have informed this person if they actually had called. The paperwork of my original "take home instructions" from the emergency vet even clearly states that bloody urine is a sign of my cat's disease.Third, the emergency vet did say that there was a blockage of the urethra that could have ruptured the bladder if not handled that day. I remember the conversation clear as day as I was told to watch out for further blockages that may occur. I was informed that if it became a regular issue my cat would need surgery to widen the urethra to lessen the chance of blockage.Fourth and foremost, I gave my cat the amount of medication told by this vet. The vet actually gave me antibiotics because they suspected the problem to be an infection. Something that the emergency vet almost laughed at. So far every vet I have mentioned it to said that they don't understand why they would have prescribed it. The extra medicine brought in (which was mentioned on my negative review on Facebook) was Nature Calm and Cosequin. Nature Calm appears to be a calming nutritional supplement and Amazon is showing Cosequin as a joint supplement. It looks as though it is a moot point seeing has how the medication has nothing to do with my cat's disease. And, again, no one had called Companion Animal Hospital saying my cat was doing better. Both my boyfriend and I hate this business for what they did.Lastly, attempting to slander my name by saying that "vicious, graffiti-like attacks by third parties" is what is going on is pathetic. Again, I am one of the two owners of the cat. Not that it should even matter considering how I was there for every step of the way and was even the only decision maker at the emergency vet clinic. That would qualify me as a first party. This owner of the Companion Animal Hospital is clearly unable to provide an adequate defense of the situation and is resulting to name calling. The fact that the owner is trying to make this already traumatic experience worse is disgusting.I also have serious doubts that this person ever called my emergency vet and will be placing a call to the vet later tonight. This vet is amazing.  Our old dog had a really scary neurological emergency today, and Dr.  Pagel was so compassionate with him.  He obviously loves animals alot.He didn't run a bunch of unnecessary tests and he researched the condition thoroughly to find the best treatment option. He and his staff went way above and beyond the call of duty and spent tons of time with us.I believe a basic office visit is $30.  A visit that requires in-depth diagnosis (like our scare today) is more expensive.  Well worth it, particularly considering they do their best to keep costs down and not perform a bunch of unneeded tests.  Dr. Pagel came across as extremely honest and caring.   Some clinics might take advantage of panicking pet parents and run up the bill, but not this one.  Our entire emergency visit, including the medication, costs just over $100.  That was amazing to me and we were so grateful. As a bonus, their office actually smells good.  Most vets have a yucky odor, but not this place.  It smells clean.  That to me is a good sign. Read Less

Dr. Kay has been really fantastic with our two adopted dogs. My expectations have been exceeded several times now. Also, for the care they receive when here, the fees are very reasonable. Recently a relative was telling me how their vet wouldn't even clip her dog's nails when she asked - instead he replied "You want that, go to a groomer - it's not what I became a vet to do" and she continues to go there because the price is cheap. Fortunately, at Companion Animal Hospital, you will receive terrific care, without the attitude, and without spending a fortune. Read Less

My cats have been seeing Dr. Kay at Companion Animal Hospital for many years (probably around 8+), since we switched from another veterinarian who was inattentive to our needs.  I am always impressed by the level of service we receive, both for routine visits and when the kitties need more in-depth medical care.  Dr. Kay frequently goes above and beyond in her level of service, and always puts my cats' needs first.  While she will provide you with all of your treatment options, she is very understanding that cost can be a factor, and has always made me feel comfortable working within my budget while still doing everything necessary for my animals.  She is also open to integrating alternative medicine and more natural foods diets into an overall health plan.  A few years ago when my cat ended up in the emergency clinic, she even went to check on him the first night to see how he was doing (at no cost to us).Office visits are currently $44 (another reviewer priced them at over $50), and you can print a coupon off on their web site for $5 off.  I've been to some vets where an office visit is over so quickly I wonder what I paid for, but Dr. Kay takes a lot of time with each client so I feel this is very reasonable.  The vets are also very accessible by phone when questions/concerns arise outside of an exam.I highly recommend this clinic & Dr. Kay! I've been seeing Dr. Kay for over 6 years.  She is really amazing with my cats.  We have worked through many issues and illnesses together and I've always felt she has my cat's best intentions at heart.  She gives options and explains things clearly.  My cats aren't scared to see her either.  All of my cats are in better health today because of Dr. Kay's care.

Kay! I've been going to Dr. Kay at Companion Animal Hospital since my husband and I moved to Madison in 2006.  My own dad is a vet, so I was looking for a knowledgeable veterinarian for the first time in my life.  A friend of my mother-in-law recommended Dr. Kay to me, and I've been going to her ever since.  Companion is great.  The vets are knowledgeable and always willing to make time for their clients.  In addition, I know that they occasionally make house calls.  Highly recommended. I am giving this vet 5 stars because Dr. Kay is great!!  You know how sometimes with check-ups, you feel rushed and not all your questions are answered completely?  Not with Dr. Kay.  She provided us with so much information about our cats (specifically about their diet and how to clean their teeth)  She gave us several different samples of new foods that we can try with our two cats.  She was very clear on the options we have for our one cat who has to get a tooth removed.  I really appreciated her thoroughness and passion for really taking great care of our pets.  I would highly recommend Dr. Kay to anyone.  Visit their website - free check-ups for your pet on your first visit!
