We took our 16 year old cat to the UW ER vet last night at 6:30 because he had stopped eating and seemed to be in pain- he was growling when we pet him, which was highly unusual. After asking us some questions they took him in back and said it would be at least 20-30 minutes, and then we sat in the waiting room for 3 hours with no word. When the vet finally spoke with us she said she wasn't able to do a full exam because the cat was growling, and that further tests would require sedation, which we didn't want to do. Today we took him to Oregon Vet and they did a urinalysis, bloodwork for liver and kidney values, blood pressure check and x-ray, all without sedation. They also noticed that he had 3 claws that had gotten so long they had actually punctured his toe pads, and that one of those wounds was infected. The UW vet didn't even see this. Their report actually states 'no obvious lameness' and 'unable to perform oral exam as patient muzzled for exam'. It also says that they were unable to take his temperature, 'unable to do a CRT test' (due to muzzle), 'unable to evaluate BV sounds due to growling', and 'unable to access CN with muzzle'. They were able however to charge us $234 for an incomplete exam which failed to notice an obvious problem and some overpriced gabapentin which cost almost 10x more than it would at our regular vet. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Read Less

When our English Springer Spaniel, Maggie, had a defective tooth, she was suffering. We took her to UW Veterinary Care and found Maggie would need the tooth extracted. Poor Maggie had been suffering for nearly a year. UW Vet was booked for 7 months. We weren't sure how much longer Maggie could stand to suffer with the infection in that tooth. The day I was going to call UW and beg if there was any way they could get her in earlier, they beat me to the punch. Maggie was into surgery 4 months earlier than expected. We were ecstatic. Maggie is all healed up and back to her playful happy self again. We are so pleased with the care and concern they had of our beloved pet. Read Less

I am a member of a rescue group, and we had a kitten with a congenital heart defect. The staff and doctors at UW Veterinary Care did an outstanding job of diagnosing, prescribing medications to keep this little being alive until his surgery, and then actually operating on a 12 week old kitten. He has been home now for 4 days. He is happy and healthy and healing. He has the chance at a normal life after being treated here, for a condition that would have terminated his life before he was one-year-old. There are not enough words to thank everyone there. Plus, they always treated me with respect, and the kitten with concern and love. Read Less

After literally trying everything to help my cat with her allergies and over grooming I finally brought her here. I spent years and thousands of dollars at other vets and they never got to the real problem, and had lots of false diagnosises. The vets and staff here listen to you and explain what they are doing and why they are doing it. After over 5 years of constant itching, my cat is better. We first came to UW Vet Hospital for our beagle Mia who was having recurrent urinary tract infections. They confirmed she had transitional cell carcinoma, a type of bladder cancer. The staff was great, especially Dr. Fernandez, in explaining everything and what the options were. Mia ended having to have a stent placed and then she started chemo. Everything was explained well during our visits, we would get follow up phone calls to make sure things were going well and detailed write-ups via email. It was always easy to get in touch with someone when we had a concern. Mia did really well at first but unfortunately, as is typically the case with this cancer, the chemo stopped working and the cancer metastasized. Mia was on palliative care for a while after that and sadly we said goodbye early this February, she was 13. While the outcome wasn't what we were hoping for, the UW staff were so helpful and attentive through the entire process. I can't say enough about how much we appreciate everything they did for Mia. I brought our quaker parakeet to their ER, when we noticed a blood feather he had pulled out. The vet who was there said there was no avian vet present but "she could take pictures" and call the avian vet. I asked why they wouldn't simply call the avian specialist in. They said "that is not how things work." ?? I was told to return in the morning, and that there would be avian vets on. We returned, and there were only residents. I spoke at length with Ruthanne Chen, about my need to hold my bird, that he is over 20 years old and fragile, and that he can't be handled by multiple people. Chen became hyper defensive, lecturing me about the "teaching" hospital, but then agreed, it would not be in a weakened elderly bird's interest. I requested to see the avian vet, Kurt Sladky, who came in with his assistant, Anne, an elderly woman who actually kinda scared me, she seemed so infirm. Sladky approached me (we weren't even in the exam room but in a small waiting room), and refused to wash his hands (which I thought really odd for a vet), he then came up behind my bird and grabbed his neck forcefully. I was afraid for a moment that he broke his neck. My bird of course didn't like that. Sladky then made a rude comment, "Hasn't your bird ever had an exam before?" Sladky then said, "Let's hold your bird like we do all our birds," and had his assistant return with a rough washcloth. They held my bird roughly and Sladky stuck a large qtip into my bird's anus and forcefully moved it around. I was so upset. It was not done with care or thought for myself or my baby. When he let my bird go, his right wing was damaged and swollen with cuts from abrasions from the handling and the washcloth. I showed Ruthanne Chen the marks and was furious. Chen agreed to pay for our care elsewhere. We left and drove to Milwaukee to received care, where my bird needed IM antibiotics because of the swollen wing. My bird subsequently had issues and a severe reaction to the antibiotic, and when we tried to get ER help from UW Madison vet clinic regarding the reaction, no one would call us, and Chen called us the next day and told me that "our bird would not be seen there again," and that she refuses to pay the invoice for the care elsewhere, although I have an email where she stated she would. Do yourself a favor, and go to a real animal emergency center. My bird's life is now in a precarious situation.Read Less

I witnessed things on emergency side I don't feel comfortable sharing. In my personal opinion it is all about money obscured as caring. They say and do right things up front but as time advances and urgent situations arise service and care slides significantly. No question when you evaluate everything in hindsight unnecessary medical procedures were performed and proper care wasn't administered. It's very sad even in most critical cases the best thing for your pet is to not go in at all. Don't make same mistake I did. Coping with death of a loved one is difficult enough without all this other nonsense. No question in my case we enhanced suffering of pet and possibly created new problems. Problems veterinarians were more then aware of both prior and afterward which provided them a handsome monetary award. Condolences were not naturally offered afterward. ER doctors and students were cold and suspicious beginning to end. I would not recommend ER and vets in southern Wisconsin seem in cahoots. They are also very much majority from University of Wisconsin Madison schooling. Particularly from period when UW was accused of unethical testing and treatment of animals publicly (not all). The students didn't seem comfortable and acted like they had something to say but couldn't. Body language and lack of communication also suggested this. It was this time last year my pet became ill and lost much weight. He was eating litter and accumulated quite a pile in stomach. It wasn't a total obstruction but partial. In my opinion problem could have been resolved with simple antibiotics and a vet squeezing/crushing material through a physical exam. If you don't believe me add some clay litter to a glass of water and try smashing it hours later (AND THIS IS WATER). UW instead performed a surgery for suspicion of cancer and found nothing. They made us believe based on ultrasound it was definitely cancer. They also removed his spleen citing abnormal appearance (which is a total point of view) and later he would need it so this contributed to suffering. I assure you, if something is in the body it is there for a reason despite what these clowns claim. After biopsies no evidence of cancer in suspected regions. The feedback was mixed. At one point someone told me mass they saw on ultrasound was actually enlarged lymph node which is normal if you're very sick. Apparently it was confused as a tumor of some kind. We were also told by ophthalmologist at one point he was blind and eyesight wouldn't return and IT DID. Feedback didn't make sense considering existing evidence. We were told he flatlined a couple times in their care and they had to bring him back. One time in particular he had no evidence of anything unusual that his heart was struggling and he seemed perfectly fine when I exchanged him. Ten minutes later after meeting with doctor I demanded seeing him and he was completely unconscious and totally different then when I had him. After all mistakes and money donated many of them were quite rude, unsympathetic, and arrogant which didn't make sense considering. They insisted he had a tear in upper intestine and repaired it but a lot of what was performed wasn't well documented and doctors would not follow up after numerous inquiries. Director followed up but only defended their behavior with all the obvious mistakes and was kind of argumentative. Front desk ladies were kind, professional and sympathetic. Too bad folks in back couldn't be this way! Also, the laboratory who studied biopsies were kind and thorough. Just so I'm clear, my experiences are with emergency side. I have no experience with clinical side. All exams took place in back out of my supervision which I seriously question. This method of treatment and care is very suspicious especially considering past accusations of animal testing and treatment of animals. Not long after experience a group of individuals went on a video gaming platform I write software for and rubbed it in my face stating personally identifiable things with this case they couldn't know. I have had two experiences with the UW Vet Care Clinic. The first was years ago when my first dog had a collapsing trachea, and the doctors we saw were extremely knowledgeable , compassionate, and gentle with my elderly pug. They gave our own vet great direction with how to prescribe the medications to maximize the comfort of my Abby. My current experience happened today. I called to find out if there was someone I could talk to about the wild goose chase that has been happening with the care and treatment my Lily has been receiving at another nearby vet. The receptionist transferred me to one of the hospital's pharmacist. She stayed on the phone for 1/2 hour with me, explaining the meds a lot better than the current vet has. I was amazed that this pharmacist was able to spend so much time with someone who wasn't even their client...yet. This woman was caring, thorough, and demonstrated exceptional customer service. Not very impressed with their customer service. When I dropped of my cat at 9:30 for his chemo. I asked if I Laird to get the labs run stat would it speed up the process. I was told it wouldn't take long. By 2:30 he still had not received his chemo. I had to stop and ask the vet tech what was going on. I had received several excuses. First the machine that processed the labs was down, then I had to hear about how the pharmacy took a long time sending his chemo. A phone call to let me know they were behind would have been helpful. Funny how quickly things got done when I started complaining. I wouldn't be so upset if this was the first time they screwed up. They cancelled an appointment on me with out notifying me. My husband and I had a great experience at the UW vet. We were very unsure about whether we should bring our brand new kitten in or not, but we ended up so glad that we did -- even though he ended up not needing emergency care. As brand new pet parents, we were Googling our kitty's symptoms and reading about horrifying potential diagnoses. I called UW first, and they gave me some general advice over the phone but also said we were very welcome to bring Preston in if we wanted to. I decided that it would be better for my peace of mind to take him in and I was so glad in the end.The people on the phone were friendly, professional, and helpful. They clearly explained procedures and pricing. For this emergency visit the cost was $110.The office, waiting rooms, and exam rooms were spotless. As a person with animal allergies, I can appreciate the cleanliness and noticed that the student was conscientious about keeping Preston in a circumscribed area so she could clean up after seeing him, since he had an upper respiratory infection.Dr. Eitzer and 4th year student Sarah Levine put us completely as ease about Preston's health and taking care of him. They really clearly explained things and made me feel confident that Preston would be ok and that it was ok that we brought him in. They also clearly explained other things we needed to do to take care of him (first vet visit, clean his eyes when they are runny) that made life much easier. They gave us plenty of time and let us ask questions. I really felt comfortable and felt like my newbie questions were respected fully.Shortly after the visit, I received a copy of the medical records in my email, and when I called the office forwarded them to Preston's new primary care vet. We have also met hundreds of "pet parents" who drive hundreds of miles from all around the region to get here. The waiting room has mostly dogs and cats, but we've seen parrots, ferrets, guinea pigs, horses, cows, and even snakes being brought here. They strive very sincerely to coordinate care with your local doctor. They provide detailed "discharge instruction" write-ups after each visit which are very helpful documentation for the pet owner and local vet. They are like this region's "Mayo Clinic" of the animal world, and their alumni are all over the country. We have deep respect and appreciation for these kind and hard-working professionals, and their large numbers of clients from all over the region. Read Less

Dave the receptionist has made difficult days easier with his great attitude and making sure you are taken care of. The surgical staff does an EXCELLENT job as well! Amazing staff from the receptionists, techs, oncologists, and surgeons. Our Chester had a mast cell tumor on his lip in July 2015 and a team of oncologists and surgeons worked tirelessly to walk us through the procedures in plain, layman terms. The chemotherapy treatments and surgery was a success.Three months later we discovered another mast on Chester's lip around the same area as the first time. We didn't think twice about bringing him to UW again. We went through the same process as before, they laid out our options, their recommendations, and the estimate for each treatments.Chester had his surgery for the second battle against cancer. This time he will need 18 treatments of radiation therapy following surgery. Articles have said again and again that UW has the country's most advanced equipment and innovated treatment approaches. We feel so fortunate that Chester will be treated with the latest radiation therapy at UW.A special thanks to Jean who goes out of the way each time to greet us and showing general enthusiasm during a difficult time. I cannot say enough good things about the UW Veterinary Care Clinic. From the phone staff to the receptionists to the students and doctors themselves, everyone has been incredibly friendly to me. I take my cat there for primary care services and recently took him in suffering with sneezing and coughing. Although a minor, non-life threatening illness, the staff worked me into the schedule on short notice, the doctors took ample time to explain what could be wrong and the options I had, and then took the time to call a week later to check in, even though one was on vacation. They are kind, professional people who care about you and your animal. And it's very affordable! My primary care visit was $25 and my sick visit was $45. I would absolutely recommend this clinic to anyone looking for primary care services or help with a sick pet. Read Less

It blows my mind that I am a first reviewer... I think there must be another on here that I can't find. Nonetheless- 5 star review, watch out.We went to a specialist in Chicago for our dog's juvenile cataracts and could not have had a worse experience... so driving to Madison seemed a little crazy, but worth it. Β 300+ miles of driving later, half the price, twice the service, and a completely different diagnosis later I am glad I went.Getting there was easy, parking is available. Β The waiting room was what you would expect, very clean for the amount of animals in there. Β I waited all of about 4 minutes before I was called back. Β A number of students came in and saw Cora (my dog) before the attending ophthalmologist came in. Β With 3 different opinions on the line, 2 of them full-fledged and well practiced vets...

Staff was friendly, couldn't seem to get my name or phone number correct. Took several attempts. Was not impressed! Got two slightly differing story's between the day shift vet, and the night shift vet. They do seem to be about they're high doll or toys.Wouldn't even consider lesser expensive approaches. Also examined my dog out of my sight, so I have no clue as to what was done. Several of my questions were never addressed. Read Less

We can't thank the staff there enough for the care, compassion and kindness they've shown us and our 4 yr old chihuahua Franny. We initially took her in because she suddenly woke up blind and was very sick with suspected blasto. They absolutely saved her life! We had to make the decision to have both of her eyes removed. Dr. Telle and the rest of the staff were so wonderful helping us navigate a difficult decision. Due to her blastomycosis they worked closely with Dr. Leuin in internal medicine to make sure every decision was the best for her. This last time the day after her double enucleation as we were in the exam room waiting for them to bring us Franny, we could hear them all telling her goodbye and how they'd miss her. I would HIGHLY recommend UW Vet. I have the utmost confidence in them! Thank you Dr. Telle & Dr. Leuin for all you do!!Read Less

My husband and I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Danielle Hagen for the wonderful care that you have given to our Callie girl. When we came to you Callie had multiple undiagnosed health issues. You have taken the time to get to the bottom of them and to help us understand them and how to treat them. Just in one weeks time we have seen an improvement in Callie. After being frustrated with other places that we have dealt with working with you has been like a breath of fresh air. Everyone at UW Veterinary Care that we have interacted with has been wonderful! Read Less

Needless to say, I will be transferring my pug's care to this hospital.Read Less

Wow I can't believe how people just don't care. He is currently in one of their trial programs. If his next visit goes just as bad we are done.Read Less

Great experience overall. Read Less

Our boxer came home from his 12th and final cancer treatment today... you sent him on his way with red bandana. I thought it was just a sweet gesture until I got up close and the tears started as I realized all the nurses and doctors there today had signed it with encouraging words. What a wonderful thing to do for not only a dog, but a well-loved member of our family! Thank you to every one for your thoughts, prayers, kind words, extra loving and extra treats. When our beloved pet was diagnosed with cancer 5 1/2 years ago, our local doctors referred us to UW Veterinary. Since then we have come to know so many of the doctors and staff members. These folks have the skills, education, technology and experience you want on your side. We have deeply appreciated the critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and profound caring they have shown our pet. Read Less

Read Less
