I brought our quaker parakeet to their ER, when we noticed a blood feather he had pulled out. The vet who was there said there was no avian vet present but "she could take pictures" and call the avian vet. I asked why they wouldn't simply call the avian specialist in. They said "that is not how things work." ?? I was told to return in the morning, and that there would be avian vets on. We returned, and there were only residents. I spoke at length with Ruthanne Chen, about my need to hold my bird, that he is over 20 years old and fragile, and that he can't be handled by multiple people. Chen became hyper defensive, lecturing me about the "teaching" hospital, but then agreed, it would not be in a weakened elderly bird's interest. I requested to see the avian vet, Kurt Sladky, who came in with his assistant, Anne, an elderly woman who actually kinda scared me, she seemed so infirm. Sladky approached me (we weren't even in the exam room but in a small waiting room), and refused to wash his hands (which I thought really odd for a vet), he then came up behind my bird and grabbed his neck forcefully. I was afraid for a moment that he broke his neck. My bird of course didn't like that. Sladky then made a rude comment, "Hasn't your bird ever had an exam before?" Sladky then said, "Let's hold your bird like we do all our birds," and had his assistant return with a rough washcloth. They held my bird roughly and Sladky stuck a large qtip into my bird's anus and forcefully moved it around. I was so upset. It was not done with care or thought for myself or my baby. When he let my bird go, his right wing was damaged and swollen with cuts from abrasions from the handling and the washcloth. I showed Ruthanne Chen the marks and was furious. Chen agreed to pay for our care elsewhere. We left and drove to Milwaukee to received care, where my bird needed IM antibiotics because of the swollen wing. My bird subsequently had issues and a severe reaction to the antibiotic, and when we tried to get ER help from UW Madison vet clinic regarding the reaction, no one would call us, and Chen called us the next day and told me that "our bird would not be seen there again," and that she refuses to pay the invoice for the care elsewhere, although I have an email where she stated she would. Do yourself a favor, and go to a real animal emergency center. My bird's life is now in a precarious situation.Read Less
